Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from November 13, 2009 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Sounds like music for facial expressions of unspeakable horror in a David Lynch movie.

This song is scaring me.

I like when Jerry Vale sings this.

  12:26pm
bryce:

i know, hugo! it's really sad....

and these recordings? are just little flimsy memory keys of what her installations sounded like.....imagine this, but multi multi multi channel, spread throughout a huge multi-roomed space.......
  12:26pm
stingy d:

respect due to maryanne amacher, she's a great artist... and i'ma let you finish but ol dirty bastard had two of the best albums of ALL TIME!
  12:27pm
BSI:

yet another reason to prefer the company of Maryanne over Ginger.
  12:29pm
J-Mar:

Thanks, Bryce, for once again cluing me into another amazing artist whose music I'm hearing for the first time upon their passing. I just visited the website http://www.maryanneamacher.org, and if you scroll down to the bottom, there's a world map that appears to identify the locations of all the Internet users visiting the website. There are a lot of dots on there -- and I can't help but think some of those folks (like me) are visiting because of this broadcast!
  12:30pm
Hugo:

To reach the point from where there is no exit ... this is music to get lost in ...
  12:32pm
Matt:

Bryce, this show is flooring me. I wish I knew about her when she was still alive.
  12:36pm
bryce:

oh man, so glad you guys are enjoying it! i only saw her perform once, and it was in a small square room — not really what her stuff's supposed to be. and it was still mindboggling. it forced your eyes closed.

it's a real loss.
  12:37pm
Hugo:

The only certainty in life is death. I hope she accomplished what she set out to do. Nothing left but the recordings (and the memories) ...
  12:44pm
BSI:

all of the above. fully agreed.
never knew about Amacher until the news.
  12:47pm
Matt:

I did not think my jaded ears could still be so totally blown away. This show started at jaw droppingly amazing and has just kept getting better.
  12:52pm
Sven:

This is all pretty damn great. This music i feel in my lungs - like breathing it. Never mind my silly comment above. There's some good youtube stuff of her.
  12:54pm
Derek:

This is the best music ever. No idea how I've never heard of her.
  12:55pm
Cecile:

I knew some, and heard her on 'FMU. I think I remembered her from Sonic Youth either collaborating with her or performing a piece of hers. But I'd hardly say I'm a scholar of hers.
  12:55pm
Ike:

Agreed, agreed, agreed.
  12:56pm
Cecile:

but it's great to hear so much of her music all at once.
  12:58pm
stingy d:

what the hell is half an inch of rain? how do you measure rain in length?
  12:59pm
Carmichael:

Depth, Stingy.
  1:00pm
stingy d:

yea ok, depth, surface area, whatever, is half an inch a lot of rain, or is half an inch, it was kind of rainy, but not terrible?
  1:02pm
Malcolm Gladwell:

stop fucking with me
  1:02pm
bryce:

sven, never enough silly!

yeah, guys, the thing is....there ISN'T much available of hers — two recent CDs on tzadik, then scattered excerps on compilations (some of which i'm now discovering have gone missing from the fmu library...).

my friend steve was pretty close to her and says she just didn't *have* a lot of stuff. but also, it's largely due to her stuff just being made specifically for large-scale installations rather than 2-channel mixdowns.

shit, i hope more stuff surfaces over the next few years, one way or another.
  1:02pm
stingy d:

half an inch of snow, that shit makes sense to me. half an inch of rain sounds to me like someone has a tube with inches marked on it, and they pured a cup that was either half full or half empty into the tube, and said, yea, thats a half inch of rain.

whats heavier 100 pounds of rain or a hundred pounds telling me what the hell you're talking about?
  1:02pm
bryce:

malcolm.....
BITE IT, BRILLO PAD.
  1:05pm
BSI:

Malcolm Gladwell and Steven Covey, cage-match to the death. I'd pay good organs to see that.
  1:18pm
jk:

will you tune my brainwaves for me? binaural beats please
  1:19pm
zedprophfer:

beepers!
  1:19pm
3rd ear:

this need to be played LOUDLY and not on headphones. no really, not personal opinion!
  1:22pm
Devin:

Saving the best (IMO) for last... This is the only recording I've previously heard.... 3rd ear and Deep listening is so interesting.
  1:27pm
jean:

wish fmu was broadcasting in surround!
  1:29pm
bryce:

yeah, that's right: NOT on headphones! forgot to mention that. doesn't work otherwise.

another one coming up in about 5 minutes

hey jean....do you have a surround decoder?? i've been wanting to do a surround show forever!
  1:35pm
edw:

this is so nice
  1:36pm
Chris:

Not really familiar with Amacher either, but yeah this is brilliant.
  1:37pm
BSI:

being stuck in the office & listening with headphones, I'm sure I'm missing out on the psychoacoustic stuff but at lower volume and meandering focus, it's a delightful bit of sumthin'-sumthin'.
  1:39pm
bryce:

sausage, you gotta try it later at home, as loud as you can stand. it's amazing
  1:39pm
3rd ear:

one's ear creates sound with these pieces but volume is required. the cd's liner notes assures you that your ears are not being damaged.
  1:42pm
Ike:

Here's hoping 128k is a high enough bitrate to make it work (via archives later). Trying to turn it way up in earbuds and dangle them but that doesn't do much. Goofy co-worker says it sounds like Nintendo.
  1:44pm
jean:

i don't have a decoder for the radio, but i would if fmu was!
what kinda sausage is best this music is getting me hungry
  1:47pm
Chris:

Can you play Synaptic Island straight through on a future show?
  1:47pm
BSI:

Recent trip to Alaska, I've had reindeer sausage. Great stuff. Not sure how it would respond to ear-dances, though.

I'll definitely try the full-room treatment with these sounds + the studio monitors later on...
  1:48pm
bryce:

you'll have to ask BSI

if you have a regular matrix quad decoder (like SQ), i'm pretty sure it'll work if you can put it between your tuner and your amp. i have to do a covert test run....

if a couple people say they can do it, i might do a quad show one of these weeks....have a bunch of sun ra, 20th century and electroacoustic stuff lined up...
  1:51pm
perrin:

tuning in late. for us california folks, maybe WFMU could broadcast 2 stereo MP3 feeds? I'd love to try quad.
  1:53pm
Ike:

Wow, Synaptic Island is a nice place!

My co-worker clarified his stance re: Chorale 1:
THE MORNING
SUN HAS
VANQUISHED
THE HORRIBLE
NIGHT
But I don't agree.
  1:53pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Perrin, funny you should say that. I just tuned my absent co-workers machine into the stream. NEAT!
  1:55pm
perrin:

actually, I have speakers that can go really loud. I look forward to getting the mp3 when the show is over and trying this...
  1:57pm
?:

for a better experience i'd get the aphosdel recordings, the mp3 archive wont cut it.
  1:58pm
bryce:

hahaaa :) i don't think you'd ever be able to sync the two streams. you'll totally dig the otoacoustic stuff, perrin, with your psychoacoustics background.
  2:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Sync'd or not, it would be well worth the doing. Someone needs to host a warehouse party in my town soon...
  2:07pm
raga:

this jean-claude eloy is positively gorgeous.
  2:11pm
doug from DC:

Bryce, thanks so much for doing the tribute to Maryanne Amacher.
  2:12pm
doug from DC:

Just tuned in and will have to listen to the archive later.
  2:13pm
perrin:

if wfmu could post the four streams as an uncompressed wav files, then I could play the quad feed here. Even if you post two stereo 320k MP3 streams, the syncing might work. I'm glad I've now heard of Maryanne Amacher. I wish I had known about her before now... thanks bryce
  2:17pm
bryce:

oh man, no problem....just wish there were more recordings to draw from. maybe more will surface eventually? my buddy steve tells me mr. naut humon has a 12-channel thing she'd just recently finished.....

raga, yeah, mr. eloy's another one. NO idea why his name is so obscured!
  2:20pm
BSI:

Nevermind the german prog band of the same name, but weren't the Eloy also the militant insect critters that inhabit the moon in the HG Wells book?
  2:20pm
doug from DC:

A friend/housemate/bandmate was a student and friend of Maryanne. I just became familiar with her music recently, due to this. I've heard a lot about her recently.
  2:25pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

this is awesome with two computers streaming...sounds like the office is going to lift off into space. My boss will be asking me WTF very shortly.
  2:27pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

...yep, boss just asked "what's going on?"
  2:27pm
William Fowler Collins:

Hi All. Here's an informative site about Maryanne's work: http://maryanneamacher.org/Amacher_Archive_Project/Amacher_Archive_Project.html
  2:27pm
Chris:

That's the Eloi in Time Machine, I believe.
  2:31pm
shreyas:

Bryce i've seen you do a lot of hindustani music in this hour. i have a number of very seldom recorded artists from the Darbhanga gharana in bihar: Chhanulal Mishra, Halim Zafar Khan. Mostly 1955-1967 era stuff. Would you be interested? I just transferred them from vinyl to mp3.
  2:39pm
bryce:

oh. WOW.
ummm.......yes please??

if i can find anything that would tickle you, i'd be happy to return the favor! http://wfmu.org/mailus.php
  2:44pm
shreyas Roy:

i'd be happy to. how do I get them to you.
  2:50pm
shreyas:

ok I'm on it. I just saw the 'mailus.php' thing. sorry if this takes a minute. i'm the least technically capable indian guy in the universe.
  2:51pm
bryce:

hahaa :)

wow, shreyas....awfully nice of you!
  2:59pm
bryce:

seeyall!
  3:02pm
Cecile:

green quarter!
  8:33pm
michael sumner / BURNING BOOKS:

The Maryanne Amacher stuff was so good on Friday that I had to play it all over again LOUDER on Saturday. A legendary show, Bryce. Legendary.
