Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from November 6, 2009 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Listener comments!

  12:12pm
jk:

morning bryce
  12:12pm
?:

sounds like one of Bryce's hindustani days, which I need in a major way. keep 'em coming, Bryce.
  12:13pm
Carmichael:

OK well, here we are.
  12:13pm
Ike:

Yay, South Asian entrancement!
  12:13pm
bryce:

yay! :) stuff from the record fair.....

hey, jk!
  12:14pm
bryce:

and you and you
  12:16pm
Cecile:

this is very soothing to my cold ravaged brain.
  12:17pm
Mr.Headphones:

Any Alice Coltrane, perhaps?
  12:20pm
Carmichael:

Ali Akhbar Khan would also do quote nicely. Or most any other Khan.
  12:21pm
Hugo:

Time has been suspended ...
  12:21pm
Jed:

are you mad at me because of the goldfish?
  12:21pm
jeff-m:

hey Bryce,

thanks this is really beautiful. have like 5 radios turned on listening to this right now
  12:25pm
Ike:

Jeff has the right idea -- when at home, I always enjoy tuning four or five different radios in my apt. to 91.1 for a piece like this and hearing it coming from everywhere. The downside is that if a DJ starts playing some Devendra or lame fey rare 70s folk or immature death metal then it takes a while to shut them all off.
  12:27pm
Jed:

we only play mature death metal on our show....he he
  12:29pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Ike and Jeff, I do that too, but my wife says I'm f'*ing crazy. I love being able to walk into any room and hear a slightly different version (due to speaker qualities).
  12:29pm
bryce:

radiopolis!
  12:30pm
jeff-m:

hehe, yeah there is sort of small doppler effect and the shapes or different filter it differently as I pace around and clean house. Unintentional actually, but the timbre and pace of this song really made it stand out
  12:31pm
Devin:

I'm wondering what Bryce's record is for playing the least amt of tracks in a 3 hour slot.... Bryce?
  12:31pm
Parq:

A variation on what Ike is saying - at home, I will often turn on the radio before I've turned off the feed (at 9 AM, eg). Usually it's a train wreck, but sometimes I'll get lucky and the two feeds will be in synch - same tempo just a few measures apart. The result, especially for dance music or non-mainstream instrumentals, is pretty cool.
  12:35pm
Hugo:

Hopefully some Carnatic ragas, too?
  12:36pm
Carmichael:

You could really skew the Nielsens if you were taking part in the survey.
  12:36pm
?:

what'dja shell out for this beauty, Bryce?
  12:38pm
BSI:

I can't believe it's not buddha!
  12:41pm
bryce:

hahaa, you'll have to hypnotize me — i bite the stickers off and swallow them as i'm walking away from the table so i can get back to ignoring reality....
  12:43pm
arby:

i'm an arbitron household, but i don't think fmu embeds the thing that would let my meter pick it up, so unfortunately i may not be boosting bryce's ratings at this very moment.
  12:43pm
?:

that much, huh? ;)

I'll have to track that one down myself somehow
  12:47pm
bryce:

it actually wasn't SO bad! not much scratch in bryceville at the moment....

it's a double on Harmonia Mundi, so it might come up! imrat khan is just.....something or another.....
  12:52pm
rudy veena:

any ZM Dagar? thanks for making the Fridays flow....
  12:52pm
bryce:

hugo, possibly! might be something in cds i grabbed on the way out.

devin, if not one.....it's awrful close.
  12:53pm
Carmichael:

KhanFest!!
  1:02pm
Ike:

Suddenly I really want a samosa. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near the pizza place in Newark Penn Station which has surprisingly spicy samosas.
  1:02pm
peter:

prakash?
  1:03pm
BO:

Yes, we Khan!

..which, of course, is a phrase already hacky-sacked around and T-shirted and image-worked.
  1:05pm
Stuart Troutman:

next, play something with Vichitra veena, my favorite Indian instrument.
  1:06pm
Mr.Headphones:

If anyone is ever near the 74th Street -Broadway Stop on the 7 in Jackson Heights, Merit Farms' samosas are out of this world. Fried and crispy!
  1:09pm
mike:

dulcimer raga?! WANT.
  1:12pm
pandit:

change we khan believe in
  1:17pm
Ike:

Hooray, I narrowly avoided being fired (or torn limb from limb) by a CEO/Corporate God of Chaos enraged that somebody [ahem] propped open the inner inner door here at the House of Sinister Domains (and Paranoid Security)! Yay!
  1:18pm
JED:

LOUD, OBNOXIOUS GRUNT
  1:28pm
Hugo:

Carnatic ragas can be very fascinating and have been played on such different lead instruments as violin (L. Subramaniam), mandolin (U Srinivas) , electric guitar (Prasanna) and saxophone (Kadri Gopinath)!
  1:28pm
Hugh Effen-Bastid:

Citizen Kafka is listening and reconsidering the benefits of reincarnation.
  1:29pm
Hugo:

Sind? We're in Pakistan!
  1:35pm
J-Mar:

Yes, let's hear some Kadri Gopalnath!
  1:39pm
bryce:

hugo, yeah, maybe a south indian day? some of the carnatic ragas are so weird and elaborate. talas, too...they really go apeshit with the odd times.
  1:44pm
Hugo:

  1:46pm
Hugo:

Bryce, yes, why not?
  1:48pm
bryce:

oh yeah, love love mr. gopalnath! :) i think i have 7 or 8 things?! they're all recorded so differently! some with heavy slapback echo-o-o-o, some totally dry......
  1:49pm
Lawrence:

Anyone hear any of the Kitchens of India cds? The one I got was actually pretty good...
  1:49pm
Hugo:

  1:51pm
Stuart Troutman:

  1:56pm
bryce:

hugo, I MISSED HIM?????
oh, 1987. carry on.
  1:59pm

  2:19pm
bryce:

nooo prob, st! good timing....

rob, thanks for the info! any idea if he's coming out this way??
  2:30pm
Stuart Troutman:

by the way, those cd's that come with the Indian food items ARE good, but the labeling is misleading, noting 1 or 2 key players/instruments, but neglecting others.
  2:31pm
Chris:

Hey Bryce, do you have label info etc for this Lalmani Misra? Beautiful stuff.
  2:40pm
annie:

made it back just in time for my dose of bryce...
  2:40pm
bryce:

hi chris, yeah — this one's actually a cd on unesco,

i thought it was still in print, but now that i'm looking, i'm not so sure....

hellloooooo annsky!!
  2:42pm
Parq:

How damn marvelous to go on a lunch break and come back to find my office filled with this gorgeous music.
  2:44pm
Chris:

Ah, thanks. Commence Googling.
  2:45pm
J-Mar:

I had to go online to look something up for work and discovered that today is, yup, Saxophone Day. (http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/November/saxophoneday.htm)

Just sayin'
  2:46pm
Rob W:

Re: Kadri Gopalnath - found no evidence of a NY gig. I think this is the last show of his tour actually. Although in searching I did discover a potentially useful site with South Asian artist tour dates: http://www.liveisbetter.com/artists/
  2:48pm
