Listener comments!

  11:11pm
Brendan:

Killer opening Evan. I gotta say, you do some of the best segues on FMU.
  11:12pm
Laurie:

Evan, now I don't feel so special about you accepting my friendster friendship request. :'(
  11:13pm
rachel jansen:

whuts up evan? please play some michael jax or some bobby sherman,,,,ty efd=)=)
  11:15pm
efd:

Brendan, thanks, that's one of the best compliments anyone could offer. Laurie, your specialness transcends any Friendster account I may or may not have.

Rachel, other DJs have covered MJ pretty well at this point. Bobby Sherman?! Hmm...
  11:15pm
john:

And I was going to join friendster just for this, but I couldn't get my Commodore 64 started.
  11:18pm
Laurie:

Evan, I am sure you would approve of this "I Want You Back" remix by Konishi Yasuharu of Pizzicato 5 fame: http://fourfour.typepad.com/files/i-want-you-back-konishi-yasuharu-remix.mp3
  11:19pm
dustin:

not to be a DJ suck up but i have to second the segues comment. always thoughtfully thought out
  11:21pm
rachel jansen:

ok evan since it;s you're show you could play some abba,,but for the love of god dont over do it,,
  11:23pm
john:

Of the 7,147,235,908 records jack white has been involved with, this one is so far ahead of all the rest it's still jaw-dropping. Great to hear again!
  11:26pm
rachel jansen:

evan--toni daytona said she'll be here next week,,just to let you know,,,
  11:29pm
efd:

John - I agree! Rachel - thanks for the warning.
  11:30pm
jojo:

it bums me out that marky mark says he doesn't smoke weed, he seems like such a cool guy, reinventing himself so many times...
  11:30pm
greg:

I hear Life begins at the hop by XTC after that Turtles song....or viceversa
  11:30pm
lodi rocky:

wow, rob base.... it's been a while and it still holds up strong
  11:31pm
Amanda:

I just listened to a whole expose all about the Amen break. So this feels oh-so appropriate.
  11:31pm
Joe:

I never got the line "Don't smoke buddah, can't stand cess".

Man, why you gotta say it twice?

Seems like a lazy rhyme to me. "Don't smoke pot... no really, I don't smoke pot. At all."
  11:34pm
Swami:

Cess is Sinsemilla, Buddha is Indica; 2 different strains of bud. There is a difference!
  11:35pm
Joe:

Learn something new every day!

Then you forget it, because you smoke too much pot.
  11:38pm
rachel jansen:

i'm just wondering evan,,who's you're fave comenteer toni d. or me??
  11:38pm
Swami:

and you don't care, . . cuz you smoke too much pot.
  11:39pm
risky!:

go funk go!
  11:41pm
john:

Oddly enough, a friend was just talking about Capability Brown over the weekend. I don't think I'd ever heard them, but at least I was able to tell him that the band named itself after the 18th century landscape architect. But that's how I roll.
  11:43pm
Laurie:

I'm trying to figure out what to get my mom for her birthday.
  11:44pm
Laurie:

I was thinking of getting her a subscription to Visionaire, but that's a tad extravagant.
  11:46pm
john:

The Great Lost Cheap Trick Record™!
  11:51pm
rachel jansen:

  12:02am
adam p:

hi evan, not sure if its just a coincidence, but theres a skate/surf shop in long branch, nj called bare wires
  12:02am
rachel j.:

efd---who would you choose as you're fave comenteer??? toni d. or me?
  12:03am
efd:

Hey Adam! Those guys are from Oakland, so probably just coincidence. Johnk - thanks for the info!

Rachel, I'll never name a favorite commenteer - you're all my favorite.
  12:04am
adamp:

thank you, evan!
  12:04am
Joshua K:

EFD, I think I just realized you were the one that I won "The Night Gardner" from during a marathon. Which I really enjoyed and ended up watching The Wire because of it, and then reading 3 or 4 more Pelecanos books.
  12:06am
rach j.:

nite nite,,,,,,happy 4th evan
  12:08am
dave:

yow, that crocodiles tune is freakin' awesome.
  12:09am
Joe:

I definitely downloaded that "Neon Jesus" single and played it until people got mad at me... judging by that track, I'm putting the album on "the list"
  12:11am
Laurie:

Oh, hey, I finally got a free bouquet from Organic Bouquet. About fucking time.
  12:28am
rachel jansen:

evan please do me a lil favor during your next break could you anounce my birthday ,,it's on july 12th i'll be listenin. thanks very much evan=)
  12:31am
efd:

Laurie, maybe there's an idea for your Mom's birthday. Joshua - great to hear, I think Mike Lupica and me were the only two who had that book so it had to be one of us.

Amanda, I want to hear more about that Amen break expose.
  12:32am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Not gloating here mind you
EFD--what happened to the Sox tonight?
  12:34am
efd:

Michael, I wish I knew!! I checked the score right before my show and saw what I thought was a comfortable 10-1 lead!

I know Joe's looking for a "like" link to click on...
  12:37am
Michael from the Left Coast:

I know the Sox gave up at least a five run inning late but still to lose a ten run lead is pretty bad (especially to the O's)
  12:44am
Joe:

I was very close to posting when Youkilis got beaned. And then again when Bay went down on strikes for the last out.

But I was too busy counting my blessings after going 2-12 with runners in scoring position and winning anyway.
  12:44am
Joshua K:

If your computer has wi-fi its technically still over the air.
  12:45am
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--But that's what you should play, those late seventies Jacksons records (they're all good but the highlights are fantastic)
  12:46am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Nobody plays that stuff anymore (not even the ones that were hits like "Walk Right Now" or "Blame it on the Boogie")
  12:48am
john:

I may regret asking, but has anyone done an Ed McMahon tribute? I don't particularly like the feeling I get when I'm riding on a jet, but it was a super cool opening!
  12:48am
Joe:

I heard Blame it on the Boogie on WCBS! Swear to god.
  12:52am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Seriously Joe?
I'm glad to hear that--it's a great song
  12:53am
efd:

damn, even *I* forgot about "Blame It On The Boogie." That's a great one!
Youkilis got beaned?! Did he stay in the game?
Joshua - good point. John, not sure about the Ed McM trib, I haven't caught wind of anything.
  12:55am
Joe:

Yeah, on two strikes too. I was watching on that MLB illustrated box score dealie so I don't know exactly what happened - he got hit and there was a delay of game for injury.
  12:55am
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--how could you forget that one? It was so good it was a Dr. Pepper commercial too ( different lyrics, same tune sung by the jacksons).
  12:56am
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--did you see the Remains documentary movie?
It's playing here in LA in two weeks but it's the same night as Jet and also Holsapple and Stamey (I will certainly go to one or the other)
  12:57am
efd:

Michael, I don't know how that slipped my mind. I have the single, too; I probably would have brought that with me if I'd thought of it.
And funny you should mention Holsapple/Stamey - guess what I have cued up?
  12:57am
efd:

oh, and no, I haven't seen the Remains movie.
  12:58am
Danne D:

Hi Funksters :)
This is great, Evan's show is like I got an extra 2 hours tacked onto my birthday :D
  12:59am
john:

Michael, just out of curiosity, what are the details on the Remains doc? Planning on decamping to LA for a month or two next week as it happens...
  1:00am
Michael from the Left Coast:

July 16th at the Silent movie theatre on Fairfax. They're actually showing a bunch of rock flicks and some good ones too (not the usual fare though). Allison Anders and her daughter Tiffany do a thing called the Don't Knock the Rock festival and they show a bunch of good films (I haven't been in a while but I saw Stardust there, the David Essex fild, never on DVD).
  1:01am
Michael from the Left Coast:

John if you're going to be in LA for a bit you should certainly see Jon Brion at the Largo on Friday night (at least see one of those shows, you'll probably want to see more). It's something you can't see anywhere else that is as good a reason to be in LA as any
  1:02am
Danne D:

and a happy upcoming birthday to fellow Cancerian Rachel :)
  1:03am
john:

Thanks! That's likely right around the corner from where I'll be in August, though a shade farther in July.

I've never actually gone to see Jon Brion, despite being out there for a month or two every year. Odd, really.
  1:05am
Michael from the Left Coast:

John--go twice at least. Some of the shows are unbelievably great and some suck (far more of the former) but if you're an FMU listener and a music fan there will always be something for you in those shows.
Last time I saw him Jon and Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing and Neil Finn bassist) did the most beautiful version of Stella by Starlight that I've ever heard
  1:05am
dave:

i think i feel the same way about certain bob mould songs as efd feels about that peter holsapple/chris stamey song.

in fact, i was thinking i could vaguely imagine bob mould singing that song, and was every bit as ambivalent about it.

you all care a lot.
  1:08am
Joe:

I definitely feel that way about Bob Mould's crazy gay club remixes. I'm usually wary of such things - however his are quite good.
  1:09am
john:

Hoping to be there til Labor Day or so, should be able to get to a bunch o' things, though the time does seem to slip away. haven't even had time to look up shows yet. Plenty of baseball, though.
  1:10am
efd:

Happy Birthday, Danne!

And happy very early birthday to you, Rachel. You'll have to settle for a playlist shout-out.

And Michael and Joe have inspired me to make a liar of myself.
  1:11am
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--Nice!!!!
John--Dodgers have been running free weekend parking promotions
Some good shows at the Hammer Museum-
-Amazing Baby coming up
The Sonics at the Sunset Junction and at the Echo in the next few weeks!
  1:12am
Danne D:

Thanks EFD :)

Rough week for the 70s, eh?
  1:13am
Michael from the Left Coast:

I wasn't going to say anything, but it's my brithday too (actually today). Passed on Winwood and Clapton at the Hollywood Bowl and spent the night with my son--a nice time. That's why I joined y'all here late (he's asleep now).
  1:14am
Michael from the Left Coast:

This record is perfection
  1:14am
Brian:

Man, is EFD responsive to the playlist comment hordes or what? One more reason we gotta love him...
  1:15am
Joe:

-nailed- the segue. Jeez.
  1:15am
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--as long as we're in the groove, you got any Brothers Johnson hanging around?
  1:16am
efd:

wow, happy birthday to you too, Michael! This is why I try to limit the birthday shout-outs to the playlist, otherwise I'll start sounding like Phil Rizzuto.
  1:16am
Aharon:

True, Brian. But is he driven by love of his audience...or fear?
  1:18am
Joe:

This song never fails to remind me of Disco Stu:

Stu: "Movin' in, show that I'm, Disco Lady. Is this seat taken?"
Marge: "Uh, I think that's an armrest."
Stu: "So, do you party?"
Marge: "You mean like a hats and noisemakers kind of party?"
Stu: "Sure, baby, whatever your trip is. Disco Stu wants you to be comfortable while he does his thing."
Marge: "Who's Disco Stu?"
Bart/Lisa: "Hey, Mom!" (they run up to her)
Marge: "Hi, pumpkins."
Stu: "Kids!? (singing to self) Back away, not today, Disco Laaady..."
  1:19am
Michael from the Left Coast:

No birthday shout out necessary--in fact I usually just ignore it. I only mentioned it as it was apropos
  1:19am
Danne D:

LOL EFD. All the sensitive Cancers out there love Evan's show. No big surprise there.

Hey there Aharon! Sorry I didn't reply to your e-mail. I thought about it but I don't think it quite suits what my team needs, but I did give it a serious look :)

Btw, I wouldn't be insulted if Rachel got a shout out at the expense of us other b-day folks :D
  1:21am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Hey John--the aforementioned Silent Movie Theatre is doing a night of Jim Henson stuff (not Muppets--experiments and shorts) on July 31.
  1:23am
Michael from the Left Coast:

and a little Harry Harrison for good measure!
  1:23am
Danne D:

whoohoo it's in sound time!
  1:24am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Hey EFD--no shout out to Casey Kasem on his final American Top 40 show this weekend?
  1:24am
john:

Michael--Perfect timing--that should be the day I move west to that area!
  1:27am
efd:

damn, Harry totally shut down "Skinny Legs And All!"
  1:29am
Brian:

I guess this is the obligatory "oh, so THAT"S where the novel title comes from..." comment
  1:29am
dave:

harry doesn't want to be associated with the woman with the skinny legs, either.
  1:33am
Joe:

DJ Brownbum also did a tasty MJ megamix on Coffee Break For Heroes and Villians.

I also contributed a stoned freestyle to the comments board of said show.
  1:49am
Danne D:

good night funk friends :) will chill and listen to the end but will be heading into the offline mode.

Cheers!
-DD
  2:00am
Joshua K:

cerebral ballsy should be on douchemaster records
  2:01am
Joe:

Great show!
  12:15pm
G:

Wasn't listening live this week , currently listening to archive from Catonsville, MD -- Am visiting relatives in MD/VA and was *at* that Baltimore/Boston game efd mentioned in the comments. Boston was wiping the floor with them before the big rain. My group were in the upper deck outfield in the 8 buck fan appreciation seats. Then there was a rainbow and meanass clouds, and then it poured like a freakin hurricane for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, as it let up we snuck down to four rows back just left of the netting behind the plate, at the corner of the visitors dugout and fifteen feet from the on-deck circle. :-) It takes technique. :-) The place was crawling with Sox Nation peoples who'd bought $49 plane tickets and rented suites at the hotels adjacent to the park, ten to a room. Baltimore then batted around twice in consecutive innings. 10-1 turned to 11-10. Terry Francona did *not* look happy the multiple times he walked back from the mound...
  12:47pm
G:

As for why, the single biggest factor was that the 42-yearold pitcher who was shutting Baltimore down the first five innings was gone after the long (well over an hour) rain delay. Arthritis was kicking in, maybe. :-) Not a single post-rain-delay Boston picher was worth crap, and the death blow was allowed by their normally excellent (but last night, in-name-only) "closer."
