Richard Diamond can be a pretty grim and rough show under the best of circumstances. This one starts off with a woman being murdered, and is titled, "The Man Who Hated Women," so I can understand why a lot of people would want to skip this episode. I get it - this one has the knitting comedy to balance things, and it doesn't work super well.

There's a few phone calls in this episode, and in general, I've found that phone calls are a bit hard to restore properly, so they sound they way they did originally, but sound clear enough to be understood and appreciated for any plot they might be conveying. A lot of restoration software wants to control for the sound of the phone call, to make it sound like that person is in the room. If you use the wrong kind of EQ, you can neutralize the phone effect too. So I often have to mix back in the original sound of the phone calls from the original broadcasts, un-enhanced or improved, so they sound like they're supposed to. It's a bit of an art.

It's fun to figure out what each show needs. Some of these old shows are archived from recordings made off the broadcast at home, in 1949, using primitive gear. So some shows sound better than others, some are good on their own, others are not. There's all sorts of things you could run into, and each one needs to be treated differently. I've talked before about the abrupt tone shifts in Richard Diamond. The back and forth with horror, drama, and comedy - mixed with a lot of quips and hardboiled wisecracks - can be a bit much for some people. Personally, I like the tone shifts, as I think that's a little more realistic. The tone of real life changes constantly, and in spite of your best intentions or desires.

It is easy to think of Cairo as some sort of "old fashioned" city, and I'm sure that you could find places like that in 1949. But Cairo had radio, TV, modern conveniences, and an interest in western culture, as much as their own. It was a fairly cosmopolitian city, like any other large international city, and was as modern as anywhere else in 1949. It's easy to forget that, given how the show is presented.

In these early episodes of Rocky Jordan, the show did not have a sponsor, so when the show would "go to commercial," they would promote other shows that were on the same station. But In a few weeks there will be a change, as the show will get a sponsor: Del Monte Tomato Products. So enjoy the last of the "Little Egypt Brand Cigarettes" Ads, as that will be changed soon.

Damn, this first hour is not doing a lot in terms of how women are portrayed in old radio shows. Of course, women did not get many prominent roles in major shows, and when they did get big roles in smaller shows, they were not as well documented, or archived. (Very typical, unfortunately.) I do try to find shows that are exceptions, but you do run into a lot of clunkers, when you listen to every episode of a show, like we do here.

Women were a big part of how radio stations functioned in this era. Every studio had at least one voice actress, maybe two, who did all the voice work for all the shows they made. Secretaries typed scripts, and were often writers, too, and would also act as program directors and any other role that might be needed behind the scenes. Since the golden age of radio was during WWII, many women replaced men at radio stations in the tech roles, too. It is a shame that we don't have more archives of shows that star women, because they were an essential part of the way radio operated in these days.

There was a cultural behavior, where men would not discuss money with women, or their wives. It's not right, and as the story indicated, she divorced him when she found out. Was Jolt cola a national thing? Your ad brought that to mind! We loved Jolt!

We had Jolt. There is a noise artist out here called, "Jolthrower," who wears only Jolt merchandise, and makes noise music with old Jolt Cola cans.

Omg that's so good!! I'm going to have to Google them! Jolt tasted awful, really, but I do still like things that taste medicinal.

It made you feel bad after drinking one, too. I usually got a headache from one. I can't really drink soda anymore anyway, but I remember Jolt being "Bad."

I can't handle soda anymore, either, but my sister and I loved Jolt. I don't remember it making us sick but we probably still would have asked for it anyway! Silly kids.

There was sort of a "caffeine arms race" back then, and I remember a lot of almost intolerable sodas that came out in the wake of Jolt. That was when I started drinking more ginger ale.

We're getting near the end. I think you might notice a similarity in a detail from one of Douglas Adams books, with the way this ends...

I only remember Jolt here and then Wegmans came out with their brand WPop. We moved onto that quickly because it was super cheap and had all the flavors!

Their ship is too small!

Just like a certain invading fleet in one of the Hitchhiker's books, by Douglas Adams.
