As you can imagine, radio recordings from 1937 often sound very rough, even under the best of circumstances. This was a nice challenge, in terms of trying to restore this recording so that it sounds natural, and yet, much more clear than the original archived recordings. Hopefully it sounds good to you!

These and Guild theater and a few other high-class shows do a great job of documenting old movies and stage shows, often with close to original casts.

This show aired the Monday after Thanksgiving, sort of making this a "holiday" broadcast. However, I was more interested in the Irish connection.

I usually celebrate this day by watching, "The Commitments."

Going to the movies - both then and now - was not affordable to everyone. (It's the kind of entertainment that separates classes.) But these radio adaptations were heard much more widely than the movies were seen, and allowed people of any class to enjoy these stories.

Lux Radio Theater was very popular in it's time, and the show ran for YEARS. TV was really the thing that killed Lux Radio Theater, as people could see movies on TV for free.

You'll hear a lot of background noise on this one. I've probably talked about this before on other shows, but occasionally, when I try to filter out background noise like that, it tends to "sand off" the dialog, and makes it sound very muddy. I did mix out some of the background noise, but not all of it, to try and keep the dialog clear.

I do appreciate that they got the same lead from the film to play Peg on the radio show. Lux usually tries to get the original cast, as Webhamster pointed out. I'll need to track this down, as I have found that Marion Davies is quite the looker.

The audio for this recording has a long section of mangled "tape," where the sound is very bad, and the tape "warbles." I used a number of tools to try and clean it up, and hopefully you don't even notice that much.

The overall sound on this recording was VERY bad, compared to "Peg O' My Heart." I was happy to clean it up, so I could actually hear it better.

There are a number of audio tools for "enhancing voices," but so far, the only good tools for "enhancing music" is to isolate the track and use "EQ" to fine tune the sound. It's not as precise, which is why there is a bit of a variance between the quality of the "voices" and the quality of the "music." I'm sure I could spend a lot more time to get them a little better, but until there are better "enhance music" tools, I have to do those tracks by hand.

As a lazy person who doesn't like to do house chores, I do love the idea of a manservant. (You find them a lot in old movies and novels.) There's a bit of a queer-coding to a "man and his manservant," but it was genuinely a job in the old days, sort of the equivalent of a "personal assistant." In my 20s, I used to joke that my personal measure of success would be that I managed to acquire a manservant, somehow.

There's a slight "chunkiness" to the voices in this version the show, and some of the lines sound like the actors might have cotton balls in their cheeks, or something. That's an artifact of the restoration process; the sound was so bad on the original recording that even the best efforts made some of the sound a little funky. I think you can still understand everything, but the voices sound a little strange, for sure.
