A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I'm having a challenging time. Still not job after 40+ applications and interviews with 7 companies, including coding challenges which I apparently suck at. Then our house's main water line sprung a leak but we have no idea where, and the locator service and plumbers are at odds and saying the other is wrong. I spend all day in two big filthy holes in our yard trying to find the leak. Fun times. I'm here now tho so yay! :D

I left some notes above, but I'm not entirely sure what univac, Ninah or das were "playing" during these music breaks. das mixes all of our sounds for the final product. Ninah is our "music director," and cues us for when to come in with our dialog, or our music bits. I think Ninah plays synths too...

This was a lot of fun to do.

univac used voice changing software to adjust his voice in real time. There were some spots where he pre-recorded some of "Mabel's" lines, but most of it was him, live, speaking into a mic, processed through that software.

I was sort of surprised to find that there wasn't an instrumental version of "Buffalo Gals," so I had to make my own.

I heard a story about Marlon Brando, where he would give out his "phone number" to people he wanted to work with. The number was for his favorite Chinese restaurant, that was attached to a laundromat, run by the same family. Apparently, Brando was there so often that you really could call there, and most of the time, actually reach him.

That bit inspired the idea that Gangster Austin works out of a French Resturant.

Snapper Carr was a "human mascot" for the Justice League in the 60's and 70's, who was a "hip teenager," and was always "snapping his fingers to the beat."

Years later, he was briefly given "teleportation" superpowers, where he could snap his fingers, and travel to anywhere he could imagine.

I think about six people remember / care who Snapper Carr was.

Those "radio clips" at the end of the show were from das' collection of strange airchecks. We put in the script, "Play random weird airchecks." He played almost 10 minutes of weird random aircheck samples. I trimmed it WAY back for this show.
