Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from November 15, 2024 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Hey, UM!

I don't know where you are in your Stetson explorations, but I really enjoyed "Sorrow: A Reimagining of Gorecki's 3rd Symphony". Deeper and darker than the original orchestration, and some of the instrumental substitutions which could read like stunt casting are IMO pretty compelling.

I like the really really low reeds, and the use of metal-style drumming when things come to a head.

I have never been a big Jackson Browne fan. I always felt he was too mopey in his singing. Dan Fogelberg was so much better because he breathed heart and soul and made the settings in his songs stand out. your comment introduced me to the new notion that of course the El Mocambo might well be an actual real-world venue at which people might attend shows, it not just a phrase which occurs after "live at" in album titles.

Speaking of NINA SIMONE, the oft-recorded song, "Feelin' Good," the Anthony Newley/Leslie Bricusse composition from the 1964/65 Broadway musical, "The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd" is my favorite version. a lot of it is exactly what you're talking about.
because of the blatant plagiarism involved i assumed it was composed by "a.i.", with a wide assortment of commissioned "sound-alike_ vocalists. that made me sad enough; but i was to learn that much of it is made by actual humans who want to be famous. that made me sadder.
