Favoriting The Radio Is Broken with Rich In Washington: Playlist from October 4, 2024 Favoriting

The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

When I was looking online for info on that comp I got, I found that it was put out by a company that contracted to do comps for various USA radio stations. There were also "comp" records made where unnamed performers (or releasing under pseudonym) would record themed albums of various hits or a couple of hits and bunch of filler. The albums would be very cheap and sold in grocery or five & dime store. There is a term I've heard record collectors use for those but I forget.

Then came the "modern" comps, to introduce new artists. That started end of the 60s, then came the comps of the overlooked or the hard to find. And then all the established artists or scenes of the past. Truly now living in the age of the attack of the comps.
