Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Hello DJ Peter and clock watchers! I'd like to apologize to all my Mets fans out there. I've been doing my best to ignore their success, and not watch or listen. This evening, I slipped up, and tuned in. I'm so sorry. I'll be listening to Ralph Peterson Jr instead now, m'kay?

You are correct, and it also included visual artists and others. Not sure how they actually billed themselves for the Paris concert. It may have been Joe Bowie's idea to follow Lester and the Art Ensemble to Paris.

i'm not sure if they have the complexity that i'm intending, putting the downmarket shopfronts against ny times language, to create a cognitive "oil and water" kind of playing off one another...in terms of scale i was thinking of them as posters...

I once saw Susie Ibarra (with Craig Taborn) playing in a Renaissance refectory, with a faded fresco on the wall. It was a strange experience to go from New York to this spot to hear Downtown musicians play.

the "no production" aspect, seemed rare to encounter these days
i had not seen mcphee before, but have heard so many people speak admirably of him, so i was eager to see him solo, as advertised...unfortunately he didn't play all that much in a group setting, but it was really good, there was a few minutes of tuba and bass playing in isolation that was interesting and sewelson squeezed out some high note screeching from his baritone sax

So, here's my RPJ story. I was a college kid, interning at a radio station against his declared major. We went to hear and record a live date by RPJ and his quintet. At the sound check, I felt so intimidated, I couldn't look straight at him. He interpreted this as meaning that I was high -- "either you have been on, or you is on" -- which would have been accurate. He asked me to hook him up. I brought my whole damn stash. This made him laugh and laugh. We walked through the vernal park together, RPJ flicking out seeds and rolling a joint as we went. He told me a little about why he smoked a little grass and drank a little tequila to relax, but that it was probably better not to. This is many years back. I remember his warmth, and his presence, and every green thing around us that he lit up with his presence, like it was yesterday. A few hours later, he played the gig and made the rafters shake. RIP and thank you, Ralph.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
DJ Peter:

Great story, adamdoesit! I first saw RPJ in the Jon Faddis quartet, also on a college campus. And he seemed clearly high to me too but antic -- he was climbing over people in the audience during the other acts. but when they hit he was on

I love Tyshawn in his own right. He also fits with RPJ. They're both gods of thunder. And Aaron Diehl can play deep into anything. And Harish can go there with anyone. Is there anything better, live, now? I can't imagine what.

Saw Fieldwork in Philly was it last year? Vijay Iyer & Steve Lehman. At the end of one extended workout someone in the audience shouted "I'm exhausted" and everyone cracked up. Sorey said something to the effect of "YOU're exhausted?!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm

Lolol.

RPJ's message to me was that he came up through what he came up through and that, though it may have not been the best solution, he did what he did to get through it. I don't begrudge it.

I can't help but worry about Tyshawn's health, too. About his heart. He's a big, big guy. And he works very hard. I hope he sticks (sic) around for a long time to come.
