Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Yes, it's at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI. I suspect that the grass is from the original central court, but they now have a bunch of grass courts, one with stands. That was the richest, lushest grass I have ever seen (before play started, in the spring).

From Bus Powell Wikipedia
severe beating by police in 1945 and years of electroconvulsive therapy treatments adversely impacted his mental health

becoming ill with tuberculosis in 1963

mental health crises and a troubled return to New York hastened his early death in 1966

few public performances between the end of 1964 and his death were adversely affected by his alcoholism and ongoing lung proble

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
DJ Peter:

Hmm. Maybe some were imposed by producers?
OTOH the story goes that after running through "Glass Enclosure," the awed listener asked "what was that called?" and reported that Powell looked around the room and then said, "Glass Enclosure"

Phew

it's disturbing either way, esp the producer angle...when i saw brian wilson almost 20 yrs ago i was a little saddened by what came off as a dancing bear show...although i know nothing about how wilson's tours were produced or by whom, but the commercial instinct is so hideous

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm

Hideous yes.
Did you see the story on 60 Minutes a few years ago about Lady Gaga doing a concert with Tony Bennett? He was enjoying singing, but it took him several songs before he said "hey it's Lady Gaga!" and then afterward he didn't remember the concert.
Now is that exploitation? Or did his wife realize: on stage is the only place where he can be the man he wants to be?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ Listener Gregory @7:05
right, but maybe the exploitation goes beyond bennett's liking and has to do with the production in total and people who were benefiting from it that he was no longer able to have awareness of....not saying you're wrong, but there's another side i think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
DJ Peter:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @7:13
absolutely. i don't know how to feel about it.
To say nothing of: even if "healthy," is it unhealthy to be so happy to be on stage and receiving applause? Are you making people happy or basking in adoration?
Unanswerable?
