Broadcast | Come Back To Me [Demo] | Distant Call - Collected Demos 2000 - 2006 | Warp Records | 2024 | "Distant Call is a collection of early demos of songs that would subsequently appear as finished productions on the albums Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon. The album also includes two songs discovered by James after Trish’s passing: “Come Back To Me” and “Please Call To Book”. These were her response to Broadcast’s 2006 ‘Let’s Write A Song’ project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song. Distant Call is a closing of the door on Broadcast and will be the last release from the band. Distant Call - Collected Demos 2000-2006 will be released via Warp Records on September 28th." | * | 0:02:35 (Pop-up) |
The Soundcarriers | Feel The Way | Through Other Reflections | Phosphonic | 2024 | Released Aug 2024. The Soundcarriers are a quartet from Nottingham, UK. "It is undeniable that The Soundcarriers carry distinct 1960s elements to their sound. To adapt the title of Jon Savage’s excellent book about the period, they reflect the time the decade exploded. ‘Through Other Reflections’ is a cosmopolitan collection brimming with sublime chamber pop melodies twinned with multiple esoteric influences such as Tropicalia, Middle Eastern psychedelic Jazz/Funk and French Library sounds. They represents how psychedelia should sound, thoroughly mind-expanding and without a hint of the turgid riffs and drawn-out guitar solos of some exponents of the genre. //// From the opening bars of ‘City Was’, there is a comforting sense that everything is in place: expanding organs, buzzing guitars, Adam Cann’s economic drums and the hyper-cool melodies of chanteuses Leonore Wheatley and Dorian Conway. It suggests a continuity with its 2022 predecessor, ‘Wilds’. However, over the following ten tracks, the album stretches in a variety of directions..." https://the-soundcarriers.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:05:39 (Pop-up) |
Dame Area | Si No Eres Nada Puedes Ser Todo | Toda La Verdad Sobre Dame Area | Humo Internacional | 2024 | Humo Internacional is a label from Oviedo, Dame Area is Silvia Kostance and Viktor L. Crux from Barcelona, Spain. This track title is purported to translate to "If you're nothing you can be everything". -------- "Steeped in the local scene, Barcelona-based experimental duo Dame Area balances an ever-evolving live show with relentless creativity. “We like to change the setlist every show, so it depends a bit when you see us,” smiles Dame Área vocalist Silvia Kostance from across a grainy Zoom call. “Sometimes we don't even play any songs off the last record, sometimes we play more, it really depends." //// Completing the duo is Viktor L. Crux, who takes on percussion and electronics when they play live. “The last record we did, I think we only played three songs live of the eight it has because we see it more as a record to listen at home,” he says. [This record is] "very based on what we’re like live. We try to never repeat a set list, ever.”" ---- You can find them here: https://damearea.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:09:56 (Pop-up) |
Still House Plants | Pant | If I don't make it, I love u | Bison Records | 2024 | Playing in Toronto on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH @ Standard Time (165 Geary Ave, Unit A, 2nd Floor) / 8pm, $20 Adv / $25 Door, All Ages. -------- UK angular weird punk trio of Jessica Hickie-Kallenbach (voice), Finlay Clark (guitar), and David Kennedy (drums) return to Toronto behind their new album "If I don't make it, I love u". Guitar jabs break apart into forlorn melodies barely held together, as raw vocals drip over them. Languid drum beats speed and slow as if running through mud and finally slipping free. Minimalistic guitar patterns hold a dub energy as they circle back on themselves. Straight up bare bones punk energy swells in these chopped song structures that feel fastened together with twine and fumes of wayward adrenaline. Still House Plants finds beauty & soul in fractured forms, seamlessly understated vocal reach and their herky jerky flourishes. They move from high energy no wave-esque jams that bite at your heels to dreamy synthscapes full of wobbling bass lines and affected vocals. Reich's playful lyrics bounce over circular synth patterns. Airy electronic tones mix with elastic beats in what sounds like the inside of some haunted computer. Bass lines bounce and roll forward under rhythmic guitar fuzz. Sentimental guitar jams merge into vibrant punk rippers that are full of playful energy. Never a moment lost as the band switches gears. Careful placed guitar notes find their way through whatever the band is up to, accenting the speeding rhythms or meandering melodies. Talking Heads | Psycho Killer (Acoustic Version) (2024 Remaster) [ft. Arthur Russell] | Talking Heads: Talking Heads: 77 (Super Deluxe Edition) (2024 Remaster) | Rhino Records | 2024 | Pitchfork, September 17, 2024: "Talking Heads Announce Debut Album Reissue, Share Acoustic “Psycho Killer” Featuring Arthur Russell //// On November 8, Talking Heads will reissue their debut album, Talking Heads: 77, with an unreleased live album from CBGB and 12 other rarities. Today, they’ve shared a rarity from the [4 LP] Rhino box set: “Psycho Killer (Acoustic Version),” featuring Arthur Russell. //////// In a press release, David Byrne said of the collaboration: "We knew cellist and singer/songwriter Arthur Russell from the downtown world. He died early from AIDS, and during his life, he released very disparate records—spacey tunes on the album World of Echo and disco club tunes under the name Dinosaur L. He left a huge legacy of recordings, which are still filtering out 40 years after his passing. I remember seeing him play Philip Glass music for a Mabou Mines production of a Beckett play. I think Beckett’s folks hated it, as they didn’t want there to be music in his plays. So it wasn’t a huge stretch that we’d invite Arthur to arrange and play on an alternate version of “Psycho Killer.” Somewhat perversely, I always saw the song as being a slightly more intimate folk rock thing rather than the rock song that folks seemed to love. So I had a special attachment to this version." ///////// As well as the live album, which is exclusive to the vinyl release, two unreleased tracks feature on the rarities disc: “Pulled Up (Alternate Pop Version)” and another alternate version of “Psycho Killer.” The box set comes with an 80-page hardcover book with photos, fliers, artwork, and liner notes by each band member and recording engineer Ed Stasium" | * | 0:22:53 (Pop-up) |

The Messthetics And James Brandon Lewis |
Impulse! |
2024 |
The Messthetics are from Washington, D.C. ////The Messthetics are an instrumental trio featuring Brendan Canty (drums), Joe Lally (bass), and Anthony Pirog (guitar). ------------ From Stereogum: "When our upstanding jazz columnist Phil Freeman recommended Devotion, Grossman’s December LP, it caught my attention because it was released through Jack White’s Third Man Records, which has been on fire lately on the indie-rock front with releases by the likes of Hotline TNT, Snööper, and Sheer Mag. Hearing Grossmann’s Coltrane-style wailing, alongside an organist, guitarist, and drummer who were cooking with exploratory gusto, was enough to leave me jazz-pilled. It was like somebody flipped a switch. I’ve mainly been going back to all the classic bop records like some classic-rocking teenager discovering Dark Side Of The Moon for the first time, but my ear is perked for new stuff too. And thanks to the aforementioned projects plus incendiary talents like guitarist Mary Halvorson, there’s no shortage of great jazz artists straddling the gap between styles, ready to become a gateway into the genre for curious rock fans." //////// "The saxophonist James Brandon Lewis is one of the most formidable talents at that intersection, playing brightly and boldly, with a richness of melody that makes even his more discordant skronks and flutters hit like hooks. Like Grossmann and Halvorson, Lewis is affiliated with a record label better known for rock and folk; ANTI- released Eye Of I, the more fractured and experimental of his two 2023 albums. On Eye Of I, Lewis’ tenor sax was backed by live drums and an often distorted cello, which made “Someday We’ll All Be Free” creep forward like post-rock and “Middle Ground” hit like a warehouse noise set. On closing track “Fear Not,” Lewis teamed with the Messthetics, the trio of guitarist Anthony Pirog, bassist Joe Lally, and drummer Brendan Canty. /////// Lally and Canty are, famously, the rhythm section from Fugazi. In the Messthetics, you can hear that old chemistry loud and clear, even when they venture away from their post-hardcore background and into jazz fusion territory. Nowadays, instead of the dual-threat Ian MacKaye-Guy Picciotto vocal attack, their rumbling foundation is topped off by Pirog’s jazz-rock shredding. Over the course of two albums for Dischord in 2018 and 2019, the Messthetics established themselves as a unique force of nature, bringing punk grit to Joe Satriani-style flights of fancy. It’s an approach that I definitely would have rejected as corny and masturbatory if not for Lally and Canty’s Fugazi cred, but the Messthetics make me remember why I once enjoyed trips to Sam Ash." //////// " Messthetics and Lewis follow[ed] up their “Fear Not” collaboration with a whole album together. (It’s already Lewis’ second LP of 2024 following last month’s fantastic Transfiguration.) The Messthetics And James Brandon Lewis is coming out through the legendary jazz label Impulse!, the cover art screams jazz, and the music itself often operates within a jazz tradition. But just as often the players lock into rock mode, keeping a swing in their step but racing ahead with a hard-hitting crunch. It’s like if the Smile stopped worrying so much about mood and texture and gave themselves over to becoming a crowd-pleasing jam band — or maybe I just say that because closer “Fourth Wall” sounds so much like Radiohead’s “Jigsaw Falling Into Place.”" |

Delivering a bold and playfully snarky brand of rock & roll that draws from both current and vintage garage rock, surf guitar, old school punk, and indie rock, Iguana Death Cult are a band from Rotterdam who are making a name for themselves among adventurous rock fans both at home and abroad. Love and Rockets | No New Tale to Tell | Earth Sun Moon | Beggars Banquet | 1987 | Love and Rockets are an English rock band formed in 1985 by former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash (vocals, guitar and saxophone), David J (bass guitar and vocals) and Kevin Haskins (drums and synthesisers) after that group split in 1983. Ash and Haskins had recorded and performed in another band, Tones on Tail, between 1982 and 1984. They recorded several albums in very short succession, each one gaining more popularity as they continually moved towards a more radio friendly sound. A fire in their studio in 1995 nearly wiped out the band financially and they lost most of their gear. The band finally broke up after playing their last gig in 1999...in Toronto. DEADLETTER | Hysterical Strength | Credit To Treason | SO Recordings | 2024 | Released Sep 13, 2024 ---- From Narc: "ALBUM REVIEW: Deadletter – Hysterical Strength / Robert Nichols enjoys a monstrously good debut album from Deadletter / By Robert Nichols: "A monstrously good debut album from a band going places as quickly as their autobahn speed rhythm and rhyme. Angular guitars with sax appeal, art punk with top trumps tunes. Braced by a baritone delivering double barrel gothic poetry, subject matters do not omit vomiting florists, meteor collisions, daggered devils, or decapitated saints in dislocated town centres. //////// Burning the candle at both ends with a vital urgency and energy, Hysterical Strength is cleverly produced but each song has a real immediacy, with twelve stand-out musical moments. The ideas were later developed during focused writing sessions at a quiet farm in Oxfordshire. The album was recorded by Stanley Gravett at Holy Mountain Studios in Hackney, mixed by Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse, and mastered by James Plotkin. Artificial Go | Aphrodesiac | Hopscotch Fever | Feel It | 2024 | Economical groovy New wave where not a note is wasted, but every note is essential, that also adds many other ingredients to this magical recipe, that we are not able to describe, but we are sure that if a time machine would have been able to match Scott Joplin with the New York mid 70s Talking Heads, giving them the push to become as oblique as Lithics, the result would have been similar to this...Artificial Go is a new four piece hailing from the DIY post-punk scene of Cincinnati, Ohio. Local labels Feel It and Future Shock have teamed up to co-release Artificial Go's debut album, Hopscotch Fever. Consisting of eight tight tracks, this debut is just that: an introduction. A little bit mercurial, a little bit iconic. Artificial Go is operating out of their own genre - not quite post-punk, not quite pop. Hopscotch Fever seems to have been recorded just outside of the collective-genre-periphery to form some sort of extraterrestrial kind of music. With angular guitar breaks, bouncing rhythms, and jolting vocals, Artificial Go is truly here on their own terms. -Jacob Mouser | * | 1:28:51 (Pop-up) |
Good News | Green Eyes | Small Forms | Bingo Records | 2024 | The long awaited Good News full length is here! Treated bass and eczema-dry percussion carry the music, rhythm first, delivering taut missives accented by discordant clarinet and guitar. Good News epitomise the concept of making a point and not sticking around too long. Recorded in a studio built in the band’s attic with in-house Bingo Records producer Zac Barfoot, Small Forms follows their 2023 debut EP Same As That, which earned the band a live session with Marc Riley & Gideon Coe (BBC 6 Music). Since then, their feisty clarinet, bass, and cowbell-propelled rhythms have bounced around the North & London supporting The Bug Club, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkeybirds, Wesley Gonzalez & Wild Garlic and Acid Klaus. | * | 1:30:47 (Pop-up) |
Clickbait | Cut Snake | At Your Leisure | Bric-A-Brac | 2024 | Released in July, this almost qualifies as a new, if not recent release. Post-punk band Clickbait has garnered a loyal fan base since its inception several years ago. The band is known for energetic live performances, stylish and outlandish outfits, and its diversity. Singer Sandra Yau says "“Our fan base is more diverse. There’s more women, there’s more queer people, there’s more people of color taking up more space and I think that’s something that’s important to us, and so that’s why we’re so proud of our fan base,” bassist Jen Lemasters said. “There’s something about being at a show (where) you can possibly see yourself in these situations. I’m also proud to be someone who’s taking up space (as a woman of color).” | 1:34:04 (Pop-up) | |

cumgirl8 | ahhhh!hhhh! (I don't wanna go) | ahhhh!hhhh! (I don't wanna go) | 4AD | 2024 | Likely the last single we'll see before the Oct 4th release of the full length on 4AD..highly anticipated due to the general AWESOMENESS of this band. The band’s latest track finds them taking on a bleary electroclash sheen, carried by bubbling retro synth textures, seductive basslines, and scratchy guitar tones. The track retains the band’s digital outré aesthetics, but it also proves hypnotizing and danceable, pulling the listener in. Along with the single, the band have also shared an accompanying video, directed by Leah Hennessey. Hennessey says of the video, “We shot the video at 93 Canal, this experimental live streaming studio in Chinatown, which is carrying on the tradition of public access/pirate broadcasting downtown. The fictional show ‘Feminist or Feminot’ is hosted by the AI Hologram of The Collective Unconscious Perception of Second Wave Feminist Philosopher Susan Sontag (played by me and actress Roberta Colindrez), who is grilling the band about their particular brand of surrealist sex positive feminism. | * | 1:40:55 (Pop-up) |

1. On the news, they talked about South Australia/Adelaide. Apperently, Adelaide is the festival city. Is it fun to visit?
