The soothing sounds of an instrumental "Vitamin C" for you... "Can Live in Aston 1977, the latest in an ongoing series of Can album releases focusing on the band’s live performances, released on vinyl, CD and digitally on 31 May 2024 via Mute and Future Days. //// Live in Aston 1977 is a whole new lens through which we can view a unique band with seemingly inexhaustible energy for live performance. It comes at a difficult period for Can; their recently released eighth studio album, Saw Delight, had been badly received and although posterity has been kinder, the reviews on release were savage. It might be expected that the live performances from this time would reflect some of the criticisms of the album, that they were slowing down, perhaps even feeling a little jaded, but it cements the notion that Can live, at any period, was mercurial. //// Within the Can Live series, this is the first to feature bassist Rosko Gee (Traffic) who had recently joined Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli, and Holger Czukay (who, relieved of bass duties is credited with “waveform radio and spec. sounds” on the album), and would perform with them until the band’s split in 1979." https://canofficial.bandcamp.com/album/live-in-aston-1977 |

Motorists | L.O.W. | Touched by the Stuff | We Are Time / Bobo Integral | 2024 | "Motorists’ second album had a lengthy gestation period, written in the year following their 2021 self-produced debut, Surrounded, which Allmusic described as “an abundance of thoughtfully arranged hooks.” In the six months leading to their recording sessions for Touched By The Stuff, the band picked up the pace, with both Learoyd and Fahner barely sneaking songs under the wire. Instrumentals were recorded live off the floor, before the trio ran wild with overdubs, weaving organs, vibraphones, and handclaps into their mellifluous harmonies. //// Inspired by the big shiny tunes flooding FM radio airwaves in the 1990s, Toronto trio Motorists go full throttle on their sophomore album. Now propelled by powerhouse drummer Nick Mckinlay, guitarist Craig Fahner and bassist Matt Learoyd channel stadium-sized power-pop through the gauzy fuzz of ‘90s alt rock, like Big Star swerving into Hotline TNT. //// This is a co-release with Bobo Integral an independent pop label from Madrid (Spain) & We Are Time (Canada): Motorists - Touched By The Stuff (via We Are Time Records) //// Released May 24, 2024 //// Matt Learoyd - Vocals, Bass // Craig Fahner - Vocals, Guitars, Keys // Nick MicKinlay - Drums //// Recorded at Taurus Recording in Toronto, Ontario //// Engineered and mixed by Jesse Turnbull //// Mastered by Mikey Young" | * | 0:07:02 (Pop-up) |

Habibi | Losing Control | Dreamachine | Kill Rock Stars | 2024 | Released May 31, 2024. "Co-founded by Detroit natives Rahill Jamalifard and Lenny Lynch, Habibi got its start in Brooklyn in 2011, earning early raves everywhere. //// Dreamachine, Habibi’s mesmerizing new record releasing on Kill Rock Stars, marks a major sonic evolution for the band, rising beyond the critically acclaimed five-piece’s garage rock roots to arrive at a singular swirl of analog and digital elements that underpin their search for spiritual and physical transcendence. //// Produced by Tyler Love and longtime collaborator Jay Heiselmann and featuring MGMT multi-instrumentalist James Richardson, the collection draws on a mix of post-punk, experimental pop, and vintage disco, calling to mind Tom Verlaine, Diana Ross, Kate Bush, and Kim Deal, all filtered through the band’s shared love of Middle Eastern psych music. The songs here are their own distinct worlds, each an immersive quest in pursuit of something greater, and the band’s performances are relentless and hypnotic to match, driven by lush synthesizers, sinewy guitars, and a muscular rhythm section. //// The result is a record as fearless as it is enthralling, an alternatingly fierce and joyous work that ascends to new heights as it reckons with desire and escape, love and surrender, rebellion and reality." https://habibitheband.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:14:46 (Pop-up) |
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds | Frogs | Wild God | Bad Seed Ltd. / Play It Again Sam | 2024 | 2nd track from forthcoming full-length, this track released May 29 2024. The new Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album ‘Wild God’ will be released on 30 August. "The journey to creating ‘Wild God’ began with sweeping epic ‘Frogs’. The first lines Nick Cave penned for the album were powerfully evocative, referencing the first murder in the Bible, Cain’s slaying of Abel. He wrote, “Ushering in the week he knelt down and crushed his brother’s head in with a bone/It’s my great privilege to walk you home.” This striking couplet became the opening lines to the song, and set the tone for the imagery and themes that followed. Nick Cave says, “The sheer exuberance of a song like ‘Frogs’, it just puts a big fucking smile on my face.”" https://www.nickcave.com/ | * | 0:20:18 (Pop-up) |

A double LP of singing-poems! This record is the culmination of a process of poetic response/adaptation and musical collaboration that started in 2017 from a meeting with Beverly Glenn-Copeland and soon after, my introduction to the Zen Buddhist poetry of Ryōkan Taigu. Out of this inspiration a band formed that is lightning and ocean wave, hot and cool, a band of overwhelm and flow. Together we are The Ryōkan Band, but individually we are Alex Lukashevsky, Anh Phung, Evan Cartwright, Felicity Williams Josh Cole, Phillipe Melanson and myself. The record was engineered by Jeremy Darby & Julian Decorte at Canterbury Sound. The brilliant Sandro Perri guided us in our three day session and mixed the record. Phillip Shaw Bova mastered it." "The acclaimed CAN live series continues with the release of LIVE IN ASTON 1977, available via Mute and Future Days (the new EU label created by Spoon Records). //// The series was overseen by founding member Irmin Schmidt and producer/engineer René Tinner, who delicately worked on restoring the archival recordings to the best quality for current modern technology. This record captures the band’s 1977 performance in Aston and features Schmidt (keyboard & synths), Jaki Liebezeit (drums), Michael Karoli (guitars), Holger Czukay (wave receiver & spec.sounds), plus Rosko Gee (bass), who appears for the first time in the series. This release features sleeve notes by former Sex Pistol, Glen Matlock, sharing his first-hand experience of witnessing CAN's live show." //////// "Aston proves once again, as this series of albums no doubt intends to demonstrate, that Can remained a vital and adventurous band beyond the Damo era – in fact, throughout their entire existence as a live act, with the group playing their last show in May 1977. Damo may have been irreplaceable (and will always be in the ‘classic line-up’ in many people’s minds), but the spark that initially ignited Can still burned brightly on stage right up until the end." https://canofficial.bandcamp.com/album/live-in-aston-1977 |

Velvetgut Parry | No Plans | Social Distancing | Velvetgut Parry | 2020 | Velvetgut Parry is an artist from Tennessee. Agender | Whoa Life Wow | No Nostalgia | CLIMAX! | 2022 | EXISTENTIAL TERROR HURRAH, SNAPPY SYNTHY PUNCHY POST-PUNK! from four humans in LA. oday's fast-evolving world. The album reads as a newspaper or a collage. It’s a political, spiritual, philosophical look at modern society- the information age. It’s an anthropological look at the absurd current state of affairs. It’s focused yet unhinged, self reflective, observant, brash, tongue in cheek, serious yet playful. Excavations and observations of the mind of an anxiously attached, overthinking, spiritual human. | 0:36:44 (Pop-up)

Jung Analysts | Punishment Is Art | The Wishing Balloons | Onoma Research | 2015 | "The Jung Analysts releases (two cassettes and two-and-a-half LPs) were very much a case of me fumbling along figuring out what I needed to be able to do as a musician in order to make my own music. And they reflect quite well something I’ve never been able to reconcile fully – the desire to have a go at creating ANY kind of music that I happened to find interesting. I was a classically trained pianist from the age of five, and by the time I was 17 I was also more than proficient on bass, guitar and a few other instruments. My interests were also diverse and I was always on the lookout for new music – often things I’d never heard from many decades earlier – that would excite and inspire me. This was a period when I didn’t know if I wanted to be Keith Jarrett, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, New Order, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Zappa, Henry Rollins, Holger Czukay, Robert Smith or Grandmaster Flash! They’re all in there somewhere!" | 0:45:04 (Pop-up)
Ricky Hell & The Voidboys | The Feeling Is Alright | Ricky Hell & The Voidboys | Dirty Water Records | 2018 | A most clever take on Richard Hall and the Voidods...Ricky Hell & The Voidboys were formed in Cleveland, Ohio by Quality Time Records founder Ricky Hamilton in 2017. The group features Adam Spektor on clarinet, longtime collaborator Carter Luckfield on bass & microbrute synthesizer, as well as recent addition John Alberty. Prior to John’s arrival the group used a simple yet effective drum machine that ran on batteries. In 2018 Ricky relocated to Los Angeles which has driven their already pop centric brand of punk further in the direction of groups like The Primitives & cited influences of Sarah Records and Postcard Records, albeit, they more accurately sound like St. Valentine Records dug up some tapes of The Reactions with drum machine. | 0:46:39 (Pop-up)

Amyl and the Sniffers | U Should Not Be Doing That | U Should Not Be Doing That / Facts | B2B Records / Virgin Music | 2024 | Newest from Amyl and the Sniffers... "Amyl & The Sniffers last released music with their 2021 sophomore album Comfort To Me... The Australian punks are back with the disorderly anthems “U Should Not Be Doing That” and “Facts.”... The two tracks were recorded with Nick Launay and are out via B2B Records / Virgin Music. The band is also gearing up for a tour this summer... “Lyrically they’re both pretty self-explanatory,” bandleader Amy Taylor said. She continued: “U Should Not Be Doing That” makes me laugh, but it’s also in a way poking fun at the shock that people still feel at a little bit of skimpy clothing, and the bitchy high school way that the music community still is (yes I’m talking to you random 40 year old metalheads sitting around a table doing lines and bitching about a 28 year old chick in a band for wearing shorts and ‘selling out’) but it mainly makes me laugh. It’s unconscious and meant nothing at the time of writing it but now I think it’s a comedic way of rubbing the dog’s nose in its own dog piss after it wee’d on your favorite rug or something." "In going with the theme Taylor just described, the comedic music video features the singer engaged in a nonstop aggressive dance-off with 50-year-old actor Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul)." Amyl and the Sniffers | Snakes | Comfort To Me | Amyl and the Sniffers / ATO Records | 2021 | Amy re: Snakes: "A bit of autobiography, an ode to my childhood. I grew up in a small town near the coast—kind of bogan, kind of hippy. I grew up on three acres, and I grew up in a shed with my sister, mom and dad until I was about nine or 10, and we all shared a bedroom and would use the bath water to wash our clothes and then that same water to water the plants. Dad used to bring us toys home from the tip and we’d go swimming in the storms and there was snakes everywhere. There was snakes, literally, in the bedroom and the chick pens, and there’d be snakes killing the cats and snakes at school—and this song’s about that." | 1:11:36 (Pop-up)

C.O.F.F.I.N. was touring w/ Amyl & The Sniffers when we caught up w/ them. "Children of Finland Fighting in Norway (C.O.F.F.I.N) are a four piece hard rock & roll band hailing from the ocean shores of Sydney, Australia featuring a lead vocalist on drums. Forming in 2005 as schoolmates influenced by a huge love for music, skateboarding and a good-times-all-the-time attitude. Since playing their first show at the age of 12 opening for The Hard-Ons at Manly Youth Centre the band have meticulously carved out their own corner of hard biting Australian Rock n Roll. //// C.O.F.F.I.N have gained a passionate following for their unique take on punk and rock music, gathering widespread acclaim for their energetic and addictive live shows combined with their lyrical activism and howling guitars. It has delivered them hundreds of gigs over the years, headline tours, and numerous festival appearances. They’ve toured and shared the stage with many world renown bands such as Rose Tattoo, TSOL, Celibate Rifles, Dead Kennedys, Cosmic Psychos, Parkway Drive, Frenzal Rhomb, Misfits, Amyl and the Sniffers and the Hard Ons." https://www.coffinband.com/ | 1:14:39 (Pop-up)
Radio Birdman | What Gives | Radios Appear (1978 version) | Sire | 1978 | Radios Appear was released in 1977, but in 1978 a new version included this song & was released once again in Australia, but also overseas. Radio Birdman are an Australian proto-punk/garage rock band based in Sydney, New South Wales. The original lineup was composed of Chris Masuak (guitar), Deniz Tek (guitar), Pip Hoyle (keyboards), Rob Younger (vocals), Ron Keeley (drums), and Warwick Gilbert (bass). In 2006, the band reformed with its original members, except for Jim Dickson (bass) and Russell Hopkinson (drums), who replaced their counterparts. "Deniz Tek and Rob Younger formed Radio Birdman in mid-1974 in Sydney, having recently left their bands TV Jones and the Rats, respectively. The pair sought to begin a band that would challenge the commercial mainstream and be completely uncompromising. They recruited classical keyboard player Philip "Pip" Hoyle, drummer Ron Keeley and bassist Carl Rorke. The band took their name from a misheard lyric from the Stooges' song "1970" (the actual lyric is "radio burning"). //// After being rejected many times from various venues and having resorted to putting on its own concerts in rented garages and tiny community halls, by mid-1975 Radio Birdman found an upstairs room at the Oxford Tavern in Taylor Square, Sydney. They eventually took over its management, renaming it The Funhouse. Under their management the Funhouse became a home to other outsider groups. Prior to the opening of this venue, Carl Rorke had left the band and was replaced by longtime friend of Rob Younger, Warwick Gilbert (also a former Rats member). Also, to leave the band would be Philip Hoyle, though his departure was short-lived. Guitarist Chris Masuak was initially hired to replace Hoyle. //// Soon a small subculture grew around Radio Birdman. This coincided with the beginnings of the Sydney punk scene." | 1:18:46 (Pop-up)
Saints | No, Your Product | Eternally Yours | Harvest | 1978 | After opening with "Know Your Product", the album later offers "No, Your Product" as a callback. Both are easily high points of an excellent album. "Eternally Yours is the second album by Australian punk rock band the Saints, released in 1978. Produced by band members Chris Bailey and Ed Kuepper, the album saw the band pursue a bigger, more R&B-driven sound, augmented by a horn section. The album also saw the introduction of bass guitarist Algy Ward, who replaced the band's previous bass player, Kym Bradshaw in mid-1977. //// The album was originally titled International Robots, and recording initially commenced at Wessex Studios. The tapes from these sessions (which have since been released as bonus tracks on the 2007 reissue of the album) reveal the songs in a stripped-down form more similar to the band's previous recordings. The sessions also include "Champagne Misery", which was not released until 2000's Wild About You compilation. //// Chris Bailey later said, "For me, it's our first proper release because (I'm) Stranded was just a load of demos. Although we still had the same energy as the first album, the added horn section seemed to confuse people and the record sort of disappeared." In another interview, Bailey stated, "When people talk to me about the early Saints in hallowed terms, I find it a little bit amusing, because when I think about something like 'Lost & Found' or 'Misunderstood', I kind of think that's crap."" | 1:21:10 (Pop-up)

Live In Aston 1977 |
SPOON |
1977 / 2024 |
"Aston doesn’t actually bear that much resemblance to Saw Delight, released just a few days before this performance at Birmingham’s second university on 4 March 1977. Baah is absent and Gee is relatively low in the mix for the most part. But what it does share with Can’s later live sets – for instance, Live in Cuxhaven 1976 from the same series – is a feeling of spaciousness. Whereas the previous Live In Paris 1973, recorded at the end of Damo’s tenure with the band, features a performance veering between ritualistic frenzy and brain-pummelling monotony, Aston is ultimately a more inviting and easier to enjoy proposition. // As with all of these releases, the live pieces aren’t associated with studio songs, but simply numbered. ‘Eins’ begins with a nebula of Rick Wight-esque Farfisa organ from Irmin Schmidt and some exotic, vaguely funky vamping from Michael Karoli – in fact, this could be Pink Floyd just after the exit of Syd Barrett, psychedelic abstraction transforming into something darker. And when Jaki Liebezeit makes his entry, it’s not with a skittering polyrhythm, but a thumping, no-messing-around mid-tempo beat. // There’s the sense of a voyage beginning, the band channelling that aqueous sound they perfected on Future Days, but moving through colder, darker waters. Karoli’s guitar rises from the depths, half growling, half roaring, then spins and dips in the icy surf. There’s some horrorshow keys from Schmidt, and in the background, what sounds like a chorus of radiophonic cats – the first evidence of Holger Czukay, who, having given up his position as bass player, now experiments with shortwave radio and tapes in a proto-sampling role. // The track morphs into what can only be described as industrial reggae, leaner and meaner than the maximalist headjams of a few years before. Karoli returns to the foreground again, his guitar wrangling verging on the atonal, howling like a robot in distress as Liebezeit picks up the beat. It ends in a flourish of prog ska, which is much better than that sounds." https://canofficial.bandcamp.com/album/live-in-aston-1977 |

Tele Novella | Eggs In One Basket | Poet's Tooth | Kill Rock Stars | 2023 | Tele Novella is a project out of Lockhart, Texas--a small town lost in time---where their classic and sincere pop songwriting is slowly processed through a loner medieval-tonk machine and then captured on cassette 8-track. Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack | Eager | Total Swarm For Young Men | Self Released | 2022 | The more you listen, the more you love. Clangy tins and chains of love, angst that gives Nick Cave a run for his money + Golden Era Metronomy vibes. Yes. Total Swarm is Montreal's Tim de Reuse at his best yet. Eclectic, engaging, lyrically compelling, and musically complete. The lyrics swing between dubiously euphoric highs and deeply anxious lows, revealing a bitter indictment of the precarity of existing within queer spaces. Higamos Hogamos | Something's Got a Hold On Me | Higamos Hogamos | DC Recordings | 2009 | Higamos Hogamos hail from Hackney. Named after a seemingly nonsensical word that philosopher William James coined as "the meaning of life" while experimenting with nitrous oxide, Higamos Hogamos, like James, is a stoney and experimental electro duo that blends modern electronic sounds with '70s glam, psychedelia, and Krautrock -- especially Krautrock. Heavily influenced by the driving electro-rhythms of Motorik German groups Neu!, Kraftwerk, and Harmonia, Webster and Jenkins recorded a few songs together before DC Recordings' Saul Kane realized the group's potential, and signed them to DC, who released their first album in March of 2009. Jarvis Cocker does Krautrock. Two thumbs up. | 1:38:47 (Pop-up)

La Luz | Strange World | News of the Universe | Sub Pop | 2024 | La Luz are back with a new album! It should also be noted that the powerful sense of openness that permeates the new La Luz record is at least partially due to the fact that it’s an album entirely made by women. Female musicians handled performing, writing, producing, recording, engineering, and mastering, giving the album a twist of fierce feminine boldness. La Luz is a rarity in that it’s a psych-rock band comprised of all women of color forging a unique path. “There is something inherently and simultaneously sweet and brutal about womanhood,” says Cleveland. “That is something I hear on this record.” | * | 1:56:01 (Pop-up) |
