Das Gud  With Milk   Favoriting With Milk Single  Das Gud  2023  Introducing With Milk by Das Gud, the remarkably talented and uproariously 10-year-old musician. With an innate wit beyond his years, Das Gud brings a fresh and clever perspective to the punk genre. His debut single With Milk is a testament to his sharp sense of humour and knack for crafting catchy melodies. Despite his tender age, Das Gud possesses a vocal attitude that defies expectations. With a raw and unapologetic delivery, his voice brims with a fiery passion that resonates powerfully. Das Gud fearlessly channels his youthful energy into his punk music, infusing it with an intensity and conviction that demands attention. His vocal presence, marked by a combination of grit and determination, adds an extra layer of authenticity to his already impressive talent. In an impressive display of musical talent and determination, Das Gud independently recorded each instrument separately for his latest masterpiece. At the age of just 10, he embraced the challenge of meticulously crafting every element of the track. This meticulous approach allowed him to shape every aspect of the music with precision and creativity, resulting in a truly remarkable and unique sound. Prepare to be amazed by the prodigious talent and infectious charm of Das Gud, the rising star of music's next generation. And if you like, me...are reading and hearing this and thinking FUCK THAT KID IS TEN YEARS OLD AND JUST ROCKED MY ASS OFF...yeah. The kids are alright.    0:07:47 (Pop-up)
Irked  Backstreets   Favoriting Backstreets Single  Scene Report  2023  We women have lots of shit we'd like to sing about but as long as we need these songs we're going to keep writing them. There will be obvious comparisons to Amyl and the Sniffers and Sleaford Mods, but Irked have more to offer. They have that wonderful, jangly guitar that set the Dead Kennedys apart combined with rapid-fire, incredibly thoughtful lyrics and it makes for a thoroughly enjoyable and very intense listen. It takes the snarky, snotty quality of the Sex Pistols and leaves the bad musicianship on the curb. If you’re looking for something new, urgent and very relevant, Irked is a band worth tracking down.    0:09:50 (Pop-up)
French Cowboy & The One  Giving Up   Favoriting French Cowboy & The One  Havalina Records  2013  Crampsy Swampsy Goodness? A bit of Hivesy Franz Ferdinand? Yep. "At first, I thought about changing jobs, or rather, finally finding one. One that was worthwhile. Palpable. Pandemics give you time to think. Something where you make things, chairs, tables, sit on what you've made, eat on it. I used to listen to the radio, which was all about that, the essential, the superfluous. Sometimes a song. Clara, Juliette, Stromae, Dominique, Philippe, always the same ones. Feu Chatterton. The Brel and Aznavour fires reconvened. Barbara. I thought my parents would take this music with them when they left. But no, it's back, like elephant's feet, recycled, greenwashed as we'd say today. What's the point of making something new, when you can restore the old? Ad vitam. The mind is used to it, it's reassuring, the news is bad enough, but if you make entertainment worse, it becomes torture"    0:12:43 (Pop-up)
Plexi Stad  Your Parade   Favoriting Siren Dance  MANGEL  2024  The Fire and Funk in Joe Strummer's Belly lives on in this track from Plexi Stad. Plexi Stad is a new 4-piece punk outfit from Antwerp city. They take you back to the early days of punk with their dry 70's sound. Ranging from classic punk to funk (even some Zamrock?) and beyond..... The band's music effortlessly navigates between unbridled energy and angular extravagance, featuring swarming hooks, tightly wound rhythms, and the poetic punk prowess of singer Peleman.  *   0:14:55 (Pop-up)
Ibibio Sound Machine  Pull The Rope   Favoriting Pull The Rope  Merge  2024  A brand new release from UK's Ibibio Sound Machine! Pull the Rope, the new record by Ibibio Sound Machine, casts the Eno Williams and Max Grunhard–led outfit in a new light. The hope, joy, and sexiness of their music remain, but, further honing the edge of their acclaimed 2022 album Electricity, the connection they aim to foster has shifted venues from the sunny buoyancy of a sunlit festival to a sweat-soaked, all-night dance club. The atmosphere has changed, but you’re still having the time of your life.    0:17:34 (Pop-up)
69  No More Musix   Favoriting Novo Rock  Idwet/69  2009  I love this sideways little ditty. A group bringing together Armand Gonzales and Virginie Peitavi, 69's mission is to create a new musical genre - as if it were an endangered species. No more alternative rock mixed with punk, the Gonzales / Peitavi duo is now fully committed to the cause of novo-rock, a music which, as they explain, "draws on synthetic and analog sounds to reinvent itself" . But beyond the creation of the genre which, you will quickly understand, has nothing very new about it, it is above all the pleasure of rediscovering the passion and energy of yesteryear which gives this record its so enjoyable character. . Indeed, with Sloy, Gonzales and Peitavi contributed to giving the French rock scene a good kick in the ass, demonstrating that a frontal collision between Shellac and the Talking Heads could work wonderfully. Fiercely minimalist and relying largely on the eccentricities of all kinds of an ever-so-debonair Armand Gonzales, the group's music exudes immediacy and urgency with its dry riffs, its monolithic bass and its outrageous keyboards. vintage. In a nutshell: beneficial.    0:21:04 (Pop-up)

Angelique Kidjo  Born Under Punches   Favoriting Remain In Light  Kravenworks  2018  Unlikely that there will be another tribute album to Talking Heads as compelling as this one from front-to-back. Dare to say that it is as strong as the original? I might so even dare!... [in 1980] "the Talking Heads released Remain in Light, an album marked by experimentation with polyrhythms and funk; the band explicitly credited Fela Kuti’s music as a strong influence on its general sound. On her new cover of the album, Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo pays tribute to both the album itself and these Nigerian influences, even featuring Afrobeat co-founder and master drummer Tony Allen on “Houses in Motion” and “Crosseyed and Painless”. More than rehashing the styles of other legends, though, Kidjo makes Remain in Light her own, constructing a version of the record that is entirely her own, a vivacious take on a group often known for their ability to sound detached from humanity. //// Opening track “Born Under Punches” lets Kidjo’s voice burst forth in an a cappella introduction that leads to a cover whose riffs remain largely unchanged from the original song. Kidjo’s powerful voice both takes center stage and makes up layers of background sound, and the song makes for a perfect introduction to the diva herself, though it only scratches the surface of what she can do with the Heads’ work."    0:32:57 (Pop-up)
Chicano Batman  Crosseyed and Painless   Favoriting Everyone's Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense  A24 Music  2024  "Everyone's Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense is a tribute album to Talking Heads, their 1984 Jonathan Demme-directed concert film Stop Making Sense, and the live album of the same name. The tribute album, made in celebration of the film and album's 40th anniversary, features covers of the sixteen tracks of Stop Making Sense performed by musicians including Miley Cyrus, Lorde, and Paramore. The album was released by A24 Music on May 17, 2024." //// "Chicano Batman is an American band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2008, the band is composed of Eduardo Arenas (bass, guitar, vocals), Carlos Arévalo (guitars, keyboards), and Bardo Martinez (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar). Currently, the band's drummer, Gabriel Villa, has not been active in the group since their last studio album, Invisible People. Electro Bamako  The Great Curve   Favoriting Electro Bamako  Celluloid  2013  Yes, it does seem that we're rebuilding Talking Heads' "Remain In Light" track-by-track in this set, but that can't be an entirely bad thing, can it? --- Translated from French, from RFI: "Born from the collaboration between a musicologist purist, a local singer and a border-breaking French director, the new Electro Bamako celebrates Malian music at its most powerful, a kind of Psychedelic Trance on computer-assisted rock mixed with traditional instruments. / Paul Sidibé, a musician renowned for being a virtuoso of the Kaméle n'goni (he accompanied Nawa Doumbia...), a sort of Malian Marvin Gaye. A "Lover" singer, as they say in Jamaica, this native of Kita handles his instruments with the dexterity of a Fulani master while telling the stories of a poet, with humor and appropriate smiles... He sings in Bambara, his native language. //// Damien Traini, a student of the Djembefolas masters (Karim Coulibaly or Ibrahima Sarr...) knows the story by heart, having "spent time" there, at the Kamélé n'goni or the Djembé, a sound trafficker, he is also someone who excels in a Logic Audio environment, the Brian Eno of the story... //// Marc Minelli, arranger and producer, fine guitarist, grew up to the sound of Talking Heads and sophisticated rock in general. His "global sound system" approach was forged on encounters (Mamani Keïta, Ernest Ranglin, Amadou and Mariam....) and on a late but passionate discovery of Jazz mixed with an in-depth knowledge of machines. He has spent most of his time in recent years in studios or on stage in a register close to performance, building each project as a futuristic architect."    0:42:09 (Pop-up)
Talking Heads  Once In A Lifetime (Live)   Favoriting Stop Making Sense (Deluxe Edition)  Sire / Rhino Records  1984 / 2023  A fantastic rendition of this song which, of course, has resided on every issue, reissue & version of Jonathan Demme's seminal "Stop Making Sense" concert film & soundtrack. Speaking of... various things about this latest issue... "2023 re-release... As part of the deal with the film's original distributor, Cinecom, the ownership of the rights to Stop Making Sense reverted to Byrne, Weymouth, Frantz, and Harrison shortly before the 40th anniversary of its original release. Hoping to commemorate the occasion, the group sought out potential companies to partner with on a re-release, eventually settling on A24. A24 announced they had obtained the distribution rights in March 2023, making Stop Making Sense their second acquisition for re-release following Pi (1998), and revealed plans to release a 4K restoration in theaters the following September. //// The studio sought out as much of the original materials as possible for the restoration, but quickly learned after already announcing the release that the original negative for the film was missing: prior distributors simply scanned preexisting screening prints of the film, including for the previous 1999 re-release. After an extensive search, the original negative for the film was found in an MGM film vault, despite MGM not having been involved in the making of the film. Similarly, Eric Thorgren and Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison planned to create new Dolby Atmos sound mixes, initially using materials from the previous distributor and Rhino Records. However, they ran into difficulty when they discovered they did not have the original audience tracks: the original audio was stored in the library of Todd-AO, which had since gone out of business and its building demolished. Eventually, it was discovered that Todd-AO's collection was claimed by Sony, who transported it to a warehouse in Kansas, where the original audio tracks were found in time to be included in the restoration. Using these original tracks, as well as the post-production overdubs originally overseen by Demme to fix mistakes in the film's recording, Thorgren and Harrison painstakingly remastered the film's sound. //// The studio premiered the new restoration on September 11, 2023, in 4K on IMAX at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, followed by a Q&A hosted by Spike Lee with Byrne, Weymouth, Frantz and Harrison in attendance, reuniting the group for the first time since their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. A24 also released a 4K Collector's Edition in May 2024. The home video release includes an extended cut overseen by the members of Talking Heads themselves that includes the performances of the "Cities" and "Big Business / I Zimbra" performances: the original negatives had been lost, but new edits were compiled using the restored footage from the cameras, including unseen footage. Jonathan Demme's own extended cut featuring the missing songs, originally released on VHS and LaserDisc, is also included. //// The film entered first as an exclusive IMAX exhibition on September 22, 2023, before heading to conventional theaters on September 29, 2023, globally. Rhino Entertainment also released a new remaster of the film's soundtrack, which includes the complete concert for the first time, on vinyl and digitally on August 18, 2023"    0:47:48 (Pop-up)
Burundi Steïphenson Black  Burundi Black (1re Partie)   Favoriting Burundi Black  Barclay  1971  "Original sound & drums & percussion taken from Musique Du Burundi, Ocora, OCR 40, track B5, Ensemble de Tambours - Ingoma." / "The original root recording of this remix would become the rhythmic basis for the #2 UK hit song "Ant Music" by Adam & The Ants in 1981. That version also sampled the original field recording cited above." //// ++++ "Burundi Black" is a 1971 recording credited to Burundi Steiphenson Black. Released as a single, it made #31 on the UK Singles Chart and #74 in Australia. //// The single was arranged and produced by French pianist, arranger and record producer Michel Bernholc (1941 – June 5, 2002). He was a classically trained pianist who had previously worked with pop musicians such as Michel Berger, France Gall, Françoise Hardy and Claude François. For the "Burundi Black" single, he used the pseudonym Mike Steïphenson. //// The record sampled a recording of drumming by 25 members of the Ingoma people in Burundi. The recording was made in 1967 by anthropologists Michel Vuylsteke and Charles Duvelle, and was released on the album Musique du Burundi on the French Ocora label in 1968, which was re-published as Burundi. Musiques traditionnelles in 2015, including additional recordings. Steiphenson overdubbed his own piano and guitar rock arrangement onto the recording. //// In 1981, a new arrangement of "Burundi Black" was recorded by drummer Rusty Egan and French record producer Jean-Philippe Iliesco, and released in the UK and US where it became a dancefloor hit, described by music critic Robert Palmer as "glitzy pop-schlock, a throwaway with a beat". Palmer noted that, although Steiphenson had retained copyright over "Burundi Black", the Burundian musicians made no money from any of the recordings. //// The recording of Burundi drummers was also sampled by Joni Mitchell on her song "The Jungle Line" (1975), and the Beastie Boys' "59 Chrystie Street" (1989), and inspired the Def Leppard single "Rocket" (1987)."    0:53:15 (Pop-up)

For fans of : Marie & Les Garçons, Suicide, Subway Sect, Edith Nylon...Post-punk in the 70s style which means: jangly guitars, driving drums and a tasteful amount of synthesiser. Siviyex  Venziah   Favoriting The Mirrax Sequence  Siviyex  2024  Toronto's Siviyex offer the dreamiest of plushy synthetic pillows and invite you to fall into a dreamworld of synthgaze, modern post punk and minimal synth. Similar to bands such as Seefeel and Bowery Electric before them, Siviyex meld electronic passages with gorgeous dream pop textures, uniquely adding elements of Italo disco and hard electro across the board. Each track on the LP is equally dreamy as it is danceable, with Castelvi’s ethereal vocals sitting on top of perfectly programmed percussion, textured guitars, and engaging synth passages. As such, The Mirrax Sequence is a truly enjoyable and eclectic collection of tracks that goes deeper into the psyche with every listen. Analytica  Playmobils   Favoriting Strategy of Tension  Ice Machine Records  2024  Analytica is comprised of David Lush, who’s released several killer solo tapes under the name Memorex, and Gabe Knox, who made a big splash last year with his awesome instrumental synth/kraut solo LP “ABC” on acclaimed UK label Polytechnic Youth. Analytica make synth-pop the old-fashioned way: driving, verse/chorus pop songs utilizing hardware synthesizers and drum machines, vocals and bass guitar, and recorded to tape. The comparisons to early-Depeche Mode (there’s even a cover of “Reason Man” — an unreleased, Vince Clarke-penned, Depeche song that was part of their earliest live sets), and prime-era New Order (right down to the Oberheim DMX percussion and Peter Hook-style bass guitar) are inevitable, but rarely are these sounds executed with such style and conviction. According to the band, lyrically Analytica “explore the facets of the dark age ahead — the propaganda, the nationalism, the environmental disaster in front of our faces - while attempting to offer something of a defence against a nihilistic response to these fears. It's at once a call to arms and a recognition that we're entirely fucked.”  *   1:15:18 (Pop-up)

"Following the announcement of their upcoming LP Wilting, due to drop June 7th, 2024, Psychic Graveyard, comprised of the minds of groups like Arab On Radar, Chinese Stars, Doomsday Student, Some Girls and All Leather, share their next single, “Sword Through My Neck.”" The band issued the following statements: “So, grab a styrofoam cup of coffee, pull up a folding chair, and dive into “Sword Through My Neck.” "Speaking on the inspiration behind the track, “I have a son who is on the autism spectrum, so I’m part of a support group for parents like me. We support each other as we navigate the challenges of ASD.” ---- "The song’s lyrics draw inspiration from discussions within their group. The accompanying video for “Sword Through My Neck,” in true Psychic Graveyard fashion, is incredibly surreal, featuring a repeating set of jaws singing the tune." ---- You can find said excellent companion vid here: Psychic Graveyard: Sword Through My Neck | OFFICIAL VIDEO  *   1:49:49 (Pop-up)
Barry Adamson  Cut To Black   Favoriting Cut To Black  Barry Adamson Inc.  2024  Album released May 16, 2024. Music by Barry Adamson / Lyrics by Siena Barnes ---- "Barry Adamson: 'I'm just trying to be the artist-in-residence in my own skull' ---- "Barry Adamson’s latest album Cut To Black might be his 10th outing as a solo artist, but the musician, composer, writer, photographer and filmmaker is not one to dwell too much on such an achievement." "Always looking dapper and always sounding cool, Barry Adamson is a man who nevertheless seems to be perpetually of another time. Giving off the vibes of a one-man Rat Pack with a dash of the legendary Lee Hazelwood, his music certainly doesn’t have much in common with mainstream tastes. //// The former Magazine bassist and Bad Seed’s new album is a stylish and charismatic collection that draws on gospel, classic soul, blues and jazz through a widescreen cinematic lens that may be mature, but certainly isn’t square. Louche but sharp, Cut to Black is by turns atmospheric and soulful but wholly witty and irreverent." https://barryadamson.com/  *   1:53:44 (Pop-up)

Spiralis Aurea Trio

Maple Death Records

2024

Released January 19, 2024 // Maple Death Records is an independent label that escaped Canadian soil and is now based in London, UK / Bologna, Italy. Living the unexplored noisier side of things. //// "Everything about Stefano Pilia’s spiritual journey always seemed to point directly towards ‘Spiralis Aurea’, his astounding 2022 release for Die Schachtel, a deeply resonating piece of art that intertwines traces of sacred geometry, collective experience and elusive connections between nature and human kind. //// ‘Spiralis Aurea Trio’ out in January on Maple Death Records, showcases the electric guitar ensemble formed by Stefano Pilia, Alessandra Novaga and Adrian Utley (Portishead) during three live performances in London (Cafe Oto), Lisbon (ZDB) and Rome (Teatro Basilica San Giovanni). An incredible document of sheer beauty and execution, will, force and composure. The original cycle of compositions live and breath, adapted and transformed, taking their initial meaning and depth to new heights, while maintaining the concepts of ‘divine geometry’ and their sacred mystique intact. //// Displaying a deep resonance with works by La Monte Young, Arvo Pärt, Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Terry Riley, that have witnessed trajectories of experimental music delving toward the spiritual, divine, and metaphysical, “Spiralis Aurea” culminates as a series of sonic meditations, leaving room within their spacious forms to encourage active listening. Calling up echoes of ancient music within their optimistic, forward thinking tones, Spiralis Aurea sculpts a striking intersection between acoustic and electroacoustic process, drone, and chamber music, harnessing the literal and abstract in search of order and higher meaning within a chaotic and uncertain world."
