Today: Michael Shelley on AI-generated music
• Michael Shelley’s show: Saturdays 11am to 1pm Eastern, here on WFMU. (Michael’s April 20, 2024 show featured a bunch of AI-generated jingles.)
• Udio, the AI music generator that Michael used to create his jingles
• Authoritarian and Democratic Technics, by Lewis Mumford (1964): “The bargain we are being asked to ratify takes the form of a magnificent bribe.” (You can also listen to this recording of Mumford reading his essay.)
• RadioHDFM, an AI-generated radio station streaming on (Amazon-owned) Twitch. Thanks to listener Hugo for the pointer.
From the Dutch-language Wikipedia entry: “Radio HDFM is een online ‘radiozender’ opgezet door Jeffrey Wirtz, beter bekend onder het pseudoniem Egbert.[1] Radio HDFM is het eerste radiostation ter wereld dat volledig draait op kunstmatige intelligentie en bevatte op moment van lancering meer dan 11 uur aan muziek.”
In English: “Radio HDFM is an online ‘radio station’ founded by Jeffrey Wirtz, better known by the pseudonym Egbert. Radio HDFM is the world’s first radio station to run entirely on artificial intelligence and contained more than 11 hours of music at the time of launch.”
The station’s tag line is “Real sound. Fake music.”

Aside, 1/2- the recent TYPEWRITER show brought up this memory, related. 2 teens in park, one asks “what time is it?”. since im 10ft away, I say “5 to 6”. And her friend sez “5:56”. Girl looks confused. So I said “Oh sorry. It’s not 5 to 6. Like she said, 5:56”. Confused look lingers. So I say “it’s 4 to 6”. Still confused. She finally sez “So what time is it? I’m really bad at this”. Boy is she ever. She’d probably take a typewriter and try to connect it to a computer.

HEADED INTO THE ABYSS: THE STORY OF OUR TIME, AND THE FUTURE WE'LL FACE Brian T. Watson
…There is urgency to this story. We face many threats, but one of them
—the internet and its hegemony and imperatives - is rapidly changing nearly everything about our world, including our very capacity to recognize how profound and dangerous the changes are…

Fans and musicians who care aout a great live experience aren’t going to rely on AI in the live setting. Bullshit gets called pretty quickly in that environment.
Fans and musicians who don’t care if AI is used on record or live will be just as happy.

i've figured they can't get sued, despite the obvious theft, because it's *just a little* of each.

...in fact, i really wish the good shows (which is most of them) on wfmu's "rock n soul stream" should move to one of the 2 respectable streams and delete the r&s stream., and it's robots.

But this one comes with deep ramifications, especially in terms of how it supports extractive capitalism.
Good show, Mark and Michael! Thanks for doing it!

Pi helped me to make a song. After some prompting he wrote a second part for a well known melody which I provided. Here is a link to a webpage where you can listen to it:
