Lulu Lewis | Ready? | Dyscopia | Illegalia Records | 2022 | Oh this has EVERYTHING I like. When that twangy guitar comes in? Pfft. Lulu Lewis is Dylan Hundley & Pablo Martin (Tom Tom Club, The Du-Rites). "Think Siouxsie, but also Dinah Cancer, a distinction made to underscore an affinity with punk’s pre- hardcore days, when the form was far less rigidly defined" (The Vinyl District) Their sophomore LP, Dyscopia, ranked Number #1 Album of 2022 by Evan "Funk" Davies of WFMU. "The pandemic and the war are the true starters of the 21st Century. This album was written during these times. This is a conceptual album, although no clear story or characters are presented. You, the listener, are the main character. Dyscopia is the environment you have to walk across. Dyscopia is music; music is an experience. There is disco music in Dyscopia. Dyscopia is not a disco album We are not good at writing happy lyrics. A song in Dyscopia can be bright or dark, depending on what you are paying attention to. You can have the same experience while listening to ABBA. There is no contradiction. Pablo almost died of COVID-19 while making this album; Dylan, lost her sense of smell. One thing wasn't better or worse than the other. It was all temporary. We heard the sirens. We followed the news. We called our friends. We made music." | 0:02:41 (Pop-up)
Ryland Bouchard | How Do You Do? | Cowbirds & Cuckoos Pt. 1 | Swim Slowly | 2009 | Again this really makes me miss 2009. Ryland Louis Bouchard (born October 16, 1979) is an American vocalist, musician, and cinematographer. As a musician he has incorporated aspects of folk, electronica, jazz, psychedelia and avant-garde rock. Previously known as the Kill Rock Stars recording artist The Robot Ate Me, he has been labeled by Daytrotter as "One of the most creative and potentially scary minds of our generation" and by Spin Magazine as "purely artistic, baffling, and almost completely uncommercial". Lana Del Rey used Super 8 footage from Bouchard's "Good Life #2" for the original Video Games (song) music video. I enjoy visiting his plane of existence. Very much. | 0:05:10 (Pop-up)
Attic Ted | Howdy M'am | Starfish As Man | Atypeek Music | 2024 | A fresh release from Texas's Attic Ted. I fucking love this nihilistic shuffle. Starfish As Man features 11 songs recorded September 2023 in Astoria, Oregon with Mike Vasquez (Sweatbox Studio) and in Brooklyn, New York with Paul D. Millar (Bug Sound East). It showcases Grady Roper, Coby Cardosa, Chad Allen, and Paul D. Millar. You will hear twangy guitar, Hammond organ bass, Casio rhythm loops, drums, clarinet, a shit ton of synthesizers, and theatrical vocals. It's like Butthole Surfers meet Klaus Nomi with David Byrne and Nina Hagen cheering on the gang !! | * | 0:06:41 (Pop-up) |
Water Machine | Water Machine Pt. II | Water Machine Single | Upset The Rhythm | 2023 | Formed in the wake of two years of social isolation, their sound careens between punk, country and alt-rock, underpinned by the unique quality they call “raw liquid power”. Morice’s vocals lead the four piece across genres and an entire spectrum of human emotion - from I Quit’s yelps of righteous indignation to the nostalgic sweetness of Flowers. Gage’s spiky-then-smooth guitar melodies build to danceable pop choruses, and frenetic punk breakdowns are punctuated by Ilgauskaitė’s syncopated cowbells and de Hoog’s offbeat bass. As the pace slows, let violin, synth and three-piece harmonies wash over you. FFO: Pavement, Beat Happening and Courtney Barnett. You get the vibe. Grab a cup and meet us at the water machine. | 0:09:24 (Pop-up)

Ween | The Stallion Pt. 3 | Pure Guava | Chocodog Records | 1992 | So many feels on this one. Pure Guava is the third studio album and major label debut by American rock band Ween, released on November 10, 1992, by Elektra Records. Many of the songs on this album come from at least two tapes that the band made for friends, including ones titled Springstuff and The Caprice Classic Tape, as stated by Dean Ween on JJJ radio in 1993. Many theories abound of what the meaning of this 4 part epic is about. The consensus seems to be...drugs. Shrooms, DMT, Nitrous. All are plausible in the world of Ween in 1992. | 0:18:55 (Pop-up)

Wire | Indirect Enquiries v1 - 5th Demo | Not About To Die (Studio Demos 1977-1978) | Pinkflag | 1978 / 2022 | The early iteration (recorded & mixed April 1978) of what would later become as one of the most heavily produced albums on Wire's third album from 1979 ('154'). This version is from the 2022 official release of an album with demos for their 2nd & 3rd albums. First released in the early 1980s as an unofficial release on Amnesia according to info accompanying the first official release of the LP in 2022. Some of the material saw its first official release in 1995 on the CD Behind The Curtain (Early Versions 1977 & 78). --- Comparing this version to the later studio version reveals how wildly different a finished product can be vs. the original idea. Wire are masters of this; especially in their early days, where they refused to play their current album, their hit material, or at some concerts any material anyone would recognize at all. | 0:33:09 (Pop-up)
Wire | Indirect Enquiries | 154 | Harvest / Pink Flag | 1979 / 2006 | From the liner notes of the deluxe 2006 version of 154: "'Indirect Enquiries' had been demoes during initial work on [2nd album] "Chairs Missing" the previous year. However, at that stage it had had a brisk arrangement with Newman and Gilbert's interlocked guitars propelling it forward. But by the time of the demos for "154" the band had already started to transform the composition. Not only is 'Indirect Enquiries' the album's slowest piece, it is also its darkest and most disturbed moment. The original tune has been abandoned in favour of an uneasy psychedelic dirge. The rhythm is a somnambulant stagger with guitars creating sheets of caustic noise as Thorne's electronics drone with menace. //// "This was another song which Graham said was too chirpy", says Newman. "So I thought: right, I'm going to make it really, really, really, really unchirpy". The last line of the text is the unsettling phrase 'You'd been defaced' which is first heard at 02:02. Then, in a rich mesh of vocals, Newman repeats the phrase over and over for the next minute and a half, the various versions of his warped and layered voice turning the song into a hail of distorting mirrors. Via vari-speed, some of the vocals have been slowed to a deep crawl. Elsewhere in the sound picture, Newman is shouting or chanting the line. //// If 'A Mutual Friend' employs the layering of multiple vocals to create a sense of joyfulness, then the web of vocals on 'Indirect Enquiries' is used to fashion a deep sense of disquiet and anxiety. Here as elsewhere on "154", headphone listening is highly recommended to fully appreciate the complexity of what has been achieved." | 0:34:56 (Pop-up)

Lead-off track from Add N to (X)'s "On The Wires Of Our Nerves" album, this song would spawn two sequel songs... Revenge Of The Black Regent & The Regent Is Dead. --- "Add N to (X) were an English electronic music band formed in London in 1994. The original members were Andrew Aveling, Barry Smith (aka Barry 7) and Ann Shenton. Steven Claydon replaced Aveling in 1997. //// After several releases on small labels, they signed to the independent label Mute Records in 1998, and achieved modest commercial success before splitting in 2003. //// Second album On the Wires of Our Nerves was released in 1998, and was described as "like Stereolab/Suicide with a rocket shoved up their rectum". The album was played heavily by BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs on her show, The Breezeblock." |

Metronomy x Pan Amsterdam | Nice Town | Nice Town (Single) | Ninja Tune | 2024 | Released Mar 12 / Writeup from Mxdwn -- "English electronic music group, Metronomy, has released a new single titled “Nice Town.” //// “Nice Town” holds true to an old-school rap beat while the vocals are being recited. This gives the song a very inviting and danceable vibe to it, grabbing listeners from many genres. Once the break comes in after the lyrics “nice town” are said some synth chords pop into the mix creating the electronic feel that Mentromy is known for. This track also features Pan Amsterdam on the trumpet who is also seen in the music video. The trumpet joins in on the second time “nice town” is said which makes the song seem full of life. It really completes the song. //// This song also has two remixes. One from the band themselves and another one from Alain Ogue. Metronomy’s remix changes the song into a bossa nova-style track with soft vocals and acoustic guitar which cannot be heard on the original track. Ogue’s remix takes a different approach and favors an electronic style. A funky bassline and synthetic melody introduce the song along with risers and minimal lyrics other than the repetitive “nice town.” //// All three of these tracks will be available on vinyl on April 19th. “Nice Town” is also the first track from a follow-up release to Metronomy’s ‘Posse EP Volume 1’ that has yet to be announced. Metronomy x Pan Amsterdam | Nice Town | Nice Town (Single) | Ninja Tune | 2024 | Released Mar 12 / Writeup from their Bandcamp: "Metronomy — esteemed purveyors of some of the world’s best-loved and eclectic indie-electronic pop music — have announced their new single “Nice Town”, released alongside news of the band’s signing to Ninja Tune. //// A collaboration with New York by way of Houston artist Pan Amsterdam, the release marks the first taste of the follow up to Metronomy’s genre-spanning ‘Posse EP Volume 1’ — an entire release of collaborations which saw them working with up-and-coming artists like Biig Piig, Spill Tab, Sorry, Brian Nasty and Folly Group. //// "My collaborations always start out the same way,” explains Joe Mount, Metronomy’s founder, lead songwriter and only permanent member. “I send out a folder of ideas, beats mainly, and see what comes back. Some artists will play around with a number of the tracks, and some will focus just on one thing that works for them. With Pan Amsterdam, it was the latter, one of those tracks that when he sent it back it was like ‘Oh wow’, it just all fell into place.” “It’s sort of an old school rap track,” he continues, “but in the case of Pan he doesn’t just rap, he’s also an incredible jazz trumpet player, who also works with Iggy Pop” //// “‘Nice Town’ deals with my own battles,” adds Pan Amsterdam. “With the internal versus the external or, intangible versus the tangible. I'm always trying to remember that tangibles may applaud my pursuit in attempting to fulfill my purpose but that my purpose is not tangible. Nor is it for my ego to be gratified. A "Town" can be a "Nice" thing to blame during these reckonings with the inner dimensions of one's self. And it's "Nice" to have a new "Town" interrupting this reckoning, and escape to.“" metronomy.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:46:05 (Pop-up) |
AIr | Moon Safari | Kelly Watch The Stars | Source / Parlophone | 1998 | "AIR have released the 25th anniversary edition of their seminal debut album Moon Safari in a Deluxe audio-video package available via Warner Music France. You can also stream the special edition everywhere now, with a selection of cherry-picked Moon Safari audio rarities. //// The album re-issue (a Deluxe 2CD/Blu Ray Audio-Video) will include a Spatial Dolby Atmos audio version of the original album along with super rare or previously unreleased tracks as well as Mike Mill’s 1998 documentary film ‘Eating, Sleeping, Waiting & Playing’ filmed during the band’s first ever worldwide tour and more… //// AIR’s boundary-pushing album has long been praised for its innovative sonics that have inspired countless musicians to think outside the box, so much so that their influence even transcended their own medium. Since Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel formed the band in 1995, the prolific duo has released six albums in addition to their acclaimed EP Premiers Symptômes, which was followed by the release of the aforementioned classic Moon Safari along with two soundtracks that all together sold millions of copies. AIR garnered an extensive list of worldwide accolades for their unique brand of downtempo electronic music that not only sculpted the sound for the next generation of electronic-influenced pop music but also was able to withstand the test of time in its own right. //// Celebrating its 25th anniversary last year, the release of Moon Safari catapulted Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel to the uppermost rung of electronic music’s ladder and left an indelible imprint on pop culture at the end of the 20th Century. //// Despite being young 20-somethings at the time and having only released one EP to date, Godin and Dunckel’s stars aligned and together they were blessed with the creative skill to make the perfect electronic pop songs. These two students of astrophysics and architecture set about creating their own universe with the confidence and pedigree of seasoned pros. //// Today, the record’s legacy is canonical, but at the time of release, its multi-million success was far from assured. Says Dunckel: “We were a duo doing some electronic thing, dreaming of selling 10,000 copies and being recognised by other musicians as cool. Then suddenly, we met the world.” In no time at all, AIR’s downtempo influence was easy to detect all around." | * | 0:49:08 (Pop-up) |
Air | Kelly Watch The Stars (Live On The BBC 1998) | Moon Safari Rarities (25th Anniversary Edition) | Warner Music France | 1998 / 2024 | This 1998 version was also available as a CDr/promo around the time of the 10th Anniversary Edition of Moon Safari. This version/performance of the song is a radical departure from the version the world at large would come to know from the studio album. Needless to say, this version surprised me greatly, like a hard (and necessary) slap in the face. | * | 0:53:00 (Pop-up) |

The second part of the "Regent" trilogy... (Yes, I'm calling it that now...) //// "Barry Smith, Ann Shenton and Steve Claydon['s] command of bulky vintage synthesisers has reached new levels of proficiency. Unlike previous adventures in analogue, they now control the energy which surges through their machines (and, no doubt, their veins) with masterful aplomb and new-found grace. //// The climax occurs during the Wagnerian majesty of the album’s centrepiece, ‘Revenge Of The Black Regent’, a heady procession of orchestral madness and military rhythm which pits former Orbital and Tricky collaborator Alison Goldfrapp‘s psycho-operatics against the might of genetically modified technology. Hooper Crescent | Dog Day Afternoon | Essential Tremors | Earth Libraries | 2024 | Melbourne based Hooper Crescent channel B52s and Devo, exploring an area of post-punk which is often overlooked. "It's a title that has multiple meanings, and hopefully evokes some other things in others too. Benign Essential Tremors is a genetic nervous system condition that runs in my family that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. On one level the title is about coming to terms with that condition and realising that there are things that are passed down to us through our family lineage, that we may not welcome, but end up becoming a fundamental part of who we are. We also liked the idea of describing our songs as "tremors", which I think fits into the kinetic energy that runs through some of our songs. It is also a tongue in cheek reference to those "Essential" compilations that much bigger bands would release in the CD era, and the absurdity of referring to your own music as "essential"." | * | 1:01:16 (Pop-up) |
The Transisters | Ultraviolet On You | Under Control | Self Released | 2008 | The Transisters were founded in 2005 and spent the last three years in touring all over Italy. Enrico, Meson, Alberto and Matteo opened many live-shows of such greats as Kaiser Chiefs, the Raveonttes, White Rose Movement, X-wife, Disco Drive, Vincent Vincent and the Villains, One Dimensional Man, The Alps and many more. During all that they even found the time to record two EPs in collaboration with Geoff Turner (New Wet Kojak, Girls against Boys), which were released in July 2005 and September 2007. As influences the four are naming bands as the renowned Joy Division, P.I.L., The Fall, Elvis - what results in their Electromagnetic(New)Wave, as the band call it. | 1:04:23 (Pop-up)
Furrowed Brow | Punctual Punk | Punctual Punk Single | Notes From Underground | 2021 | What joy this song brought me this week! I am quite obsessed. Bewildering, nonsensincal, hilarious...bombast. I hate to say it but Fall meets B52s with Monochrome Set? Other critics agree: comes on like a mutant B-52s crossed with The Band of Holy Joy. Strident lead vocals, chaotic backing vocals, an organ that sounds as old as the hills. That’s not to mention the weirdly Western start which may perplex you somewhat but that’s all part of what the band do, that’s part of why they are so good" | 1:07:34 (Pop-up)

Radical Kitten | Mouse Trap | Uppercat | Cartelle/Modulator | 2024 | Scratchy and catty, this is MeepMoop approved! “Uppercat” is a classic rrriotpunk track brimming with queer and feminist energy that packs a punch both literally and figuratively. His music is still used in productions today. For example, his "Beauty Parade" was used in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Spy Buddies", and in The IT Crowd episode "Men Without Women." In the television comedy series Episodes, Matt LeBlanc uses the tune "Two Time" as his iPhone's ringtone. The composition known either as "Man Friday" or "The Penthouse Suite" (from KPM 1049 Chorus and Orchestra, 1969), was used as the theme tune to LWT's Tarrant on TV and was also used extensively in the episode "Speed 3" of Father Ted to introduce libidinous milkman Pat Mustard. Wine Lips | Fried III | Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party | Wine Lips | 2021 | In for a penny, in for a pound... The act of frying continued on their third album. //// "Toronto based garage punk psych rockers, Wine Lips hit the stage for the first time in the fall of 2015. Initially a part time project between songwriter/guitar player, Cam Hilborn and drummer Aurora Evans, the band began playing clubs in Toronto, stretching organically to surrounding cities, and then into Quebec. By mid 2017 it was clear that the band members were ready to make a full-time commitment. Wine Lips released their self-titled debut LP on indie label Fried Records and set out on their first 5-province tour east to the Maritimes. And they haven’t looked back since. //// A chance meeting resulted in an April 2018 tour of Hong Kong and China, where they were received by enthusiastic audiences. //// Never ones to let the dust settle, the band released their follow up LP “Stressor” in March 2019 and toured North America relentlessly until early 2020. The release of Stressor along with endless tour dates earned the band an ardent following and saw some of the album tracks featured prominently on television and Netflix. //// The band spent most of their free time in 2020 writing and recording their phenomenal third full length record “Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party” at The Sugar Shack in London, Ontario with Simon Larochette. //// “The record is crazy! We really spent a lot of time getting the songs to sound exactly the way we wanted. I think this is the best stuff we’ve recorded and I’m super stoked with the end result!” says Cam //// Wine Lips is Cam Hilborn on Guitar and Vocals with Aurora Evans on Drums, Jordan Sosensky on Guitar and Charlie Weare on Bass." | 1:40:54 (Pop-up)
Wine Lips | Fried IV | Super Mega Ultra | Wine Lips | 2024 | March 15 saw the release of Wine Lips' second advanced single, "Fried IV", from the forthcoming (April 5) album "Super Mega Ultra" --- It has a new video, too! Wine Lips - Fried IV (Official Video) +++++++++ "Cam Hilborn (vox, songwriter, guitar) shares, “I’ve written a version of “Fried” on every record we put out so naturally I had to add a “Fried IV” to this album. The record had about 14 songs in the works and I was having a hard time coming up with an idea for “Fried IV,” so it was looking like it might not happen this time around.“ //// I was very transfixed on a riff from a song we decided to cut from the record so I just ended up reworking the whole song into something I was stoked about. It was the last song recorded for the record, I hadn’t even rehearsed it with Aurora (drums) before going to the studio and I pieced the lyrics together right before recording them. We pretty much worked that song out on the spot with our engineer, Simon, and it became one of my favourite tracks on the record. //// Super Mega Ultra is an absolute beast. Recorded by Simon Larochette at The Sugar Shack in Ontario, the album is jam-packed with 12 ramped-up supersonic ear-scorching auditory delicacies. SMU is probably Wine Lips’ most ambitious undertaking to date, exploring new thematic territory while firmly maintaining their signature psych garage punk rock panache." ++++=++++ Is there also a tour?
