Drunk Mums | New Australia | Beer Baby | Legless | 2024 | Drunk Mums are a garage punk band out of Melbourne, Australia serving up hard-rockin’ party anthems. They just recently put out a new album called Beer Baby via LEGLESS, Gaga Music and Bachelor Records, and the whole thing is streaming right now on their Bandcamp. Opening on some barely distorted guitar parts, first track “New Australia” soon launches into a classic ’70s-style punk anthem with its simple, straightforward riffs and driving beat. The swaggering vocals, complete with the thick Australian accent, lend a sort of drunken bravado to the lyrics that’s not entirely unlike fellow Aussie punks The Chats. the song was written during songwriter Jake Doyle’s uninspiring job at a warehouse near Melbourne Airport. As it was written during his work shifts, the song captures the frustration of mundane work life. “It was seriously one of the worst jobs I’ve ever had—proper robot work with no praise,” singer Jake remarked. They are also embarking on a tour so keep an eye out for Drunk Mums in your town! | * | 0:03:31 (Pop-up)
Balona | Carisca | Balona | Peroquebien | 2023 | Balona son Pilar Barrachina, Alberto Serrano y Jose Guerrero. Absolutely loving the Beak-ish and indie rock vibe of this band...not a lot of info to be found, but shades of Bodega and New York...and of course Spain make for a superfun, fuzzy listen! | 0:06:08 (Pop-up)
Mhaol | Pursuit | Pursuit Single | Merge Records | 2024 | Ireland's Mhaol are back in fine form and fury. "As a whole, the song is built out of frustration that has accumulated over the past 30 years of being a woman in public," says M(h)aol singer-drummer Constance Keane of the band's latest number. “‘Pursuit’ is about the experience of being followed home,” says Keane. “Sadly, I think it’s something most women have experienced, and something that makes you change your behaviour on a very practical level. It first happened to me when I was 12, and it stayed with me for a long time. The experience of choosing your outfit based on how quickly it could help you get out of a dangerous situation is something I don’t even notice I’m doing sometimes, and that in itself scares me. What am I doing choosing shoes I know I can run fast in, rather than the ones that would go better with my outfit?” | * | 0:08:19 (Pop-up)
Bleach Cult | A Coke With Hollie - Ement RMX | Summertime Whiteout Remixes | Partyzanai Pop Records | 2021 | BLEACH CULT is the musical nom de plume of Vytis Puronas, singer-songwriter and film sound designer, formerly one half of lo-fi synthpop outfit Soy Farm. His music is very textural and direct, with a genre-bending approach that explores post-punk aesthetics, minimal wave soundscapes and intriguing hooks with a pleasantly retro vibe. BLEACH CULT is all about raw imperfections and beautiful spontaneity, captured live on analog modular synthesizers, often relying on single takes and instinctive executions of tracks that leave little to no room for extensive tweaking and post-processing. Quite interestingly, Bleach Cult’s music is hard to categorize under the umbrella of a single genre. Instead, Puronas creates a distinct noirish tone, which borrows from influences as diverse as post-punk, minimal wave, techno and even pre-war blues and 60s rockabilly, just to mention a few. | 0:11:40 (Pop-up)
Kneecap | H.O.O.D | H.O.O.D. Single | Self Released | 2019 | Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí have built up a notoriety for themselves which hasn't been seen in Irish music for many years, perhaps ever! Even if you put that to one side for a second, Kneecap are a frighteningly articulate rap group. Merging Irish with English, satire with socially conscious lyrics, and reality with absurdity, theirs is a voice which comes screaming from the too-often deprived areas of the North of Ireland, speaking in a language which is too-often ignored, and it makes for suitably electrifying stuff. There seems to be no stopping their spectacular rise, with sold out tours in the US and UK and even bigger plans to come. Whether you understand half of what they're saying or not, you won't want to miss them... | 0:14:49 (Pop-up)

Snõõper | Bed Bugs | Super Snõõper | Third Man | 2022 | LP possibly yours (draw to be held) for a $20 (minimum) donation -- "Before Jack White signed them to Third Man, Snõõper staked their claim in Tennessee’s DIY scene as the sound of egg punk in the 2020s: fast riffs, fun antics, and no-fucks-given misfit pride. While Indiana torchbearers the Coneheads and Liquids played hardcore-inspired weirdo punk in a Hardee’s parking lot, Snõõper raided the arts and crafts closet. At live shows, the Nashville five-piece rip through minute-long songs, perform choreography in matching tracksuits, and march bug-eyed papier mâché puppets around the stage as singer Blair Tramel curls a comically large cardboard dumbbell. The goal, as guitarist Connor Cummins put it: “Go as crazy as possible for 30 minutes.” A band with an insatiable desire to shred and a keen eye for bold visual aesthetics? Of course the guy who co-founded the White Stripes couldn’t call dibs fast enough. Snõõper’s debut, Super Snõõper, is a highlight in the world of “Devo-core,” with unpredictable riffs and voltaic singing that strike just the right balance of delightful and detached." ///// CLICK THIS LINK TO DONATE TO WFMU (via Transmissions From Echo Beach) | 0:29:46 (Pop-up)

Stereolab | Mellotron | Peng! | Too Pure | 1992 | Peng! is the debut studio album by English-French band Stereolab. It was released on 26 May 1992 by Too Pure in the United Kingdom. The album was issued in the United States on 13 June 1995 by Too Pure and American Recordings. Peng! is a blueprint of what Stereolab would become: a band experimenting with 1960s pop harmonies, teethy guitars, and the borderless world of analog electronics. It’s an incomplete picture of the band—two key members, singer-guitarist Mary Hansen and drummer Andy Ramsay, had yet to join—but it has an immediate magic to it, like being there in the studio beside them before their career kicks off. It’s also the closest Stereolab come to being an indie-rock band.... | 0:50:33 (Pop-up)
Pas Chic Chic | Se Mirer Mare | Au Contraire | Semprini | 2008 | Pas Chic Chic were a Canadian indie pop group, whose album Au Contraire was a longlisted nominee for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. A side project led by Roger Tellier-Craig of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Fly Pan Am, the band's music was a psychedelic spin on francophone musical traditions such as yé-yé and chansonnier pop. The band featured Tellier-Craig and Marie-Douce St-Jacques on vocals, along with guitarist Radwan Moumneh, bassist Éric Gingras and drummer Éric Fillion. The album was released in April 2008 on Semprini Records | 0:53:20 (Pop-up)

Moon Goose | Cloud Of Eyeballs | Murmurations | Fruits de Mer / Inflatable Tarmac Records | 2024 | "Murmurations describe a natural phenomenon in which a large group of starlings fly in unison using complex laws of movement depending on the relative birds around each individual. This behaviour can be observed on land in herds and under the sea in schools of fish. They are the natural answer of the collective facing a common danger. What seems to be engineered by the mind of one leader is actually generated by every individual's awareness of the group, working together towards their collective fate. There must be a lesson there. Moon Geese (mean geese) murmurations are very rare because there aren't any predators on the Moon except for a few quickly gone humans and a couple multilingual slow bots on wheels. //// Murmurations is Moon Goose’s fourth LP, recorded and mixed at Twin Peaks Studio, Wales, by Adam Fuest (Mott the Hoople, Babyshambles, The Cure) and published by Fruits de Mer Records and Inflatable Tarmac Records. //// The eight tracks featured in Murmurations were whispered by the Barn to the band on dark, icy nights, disturbing the quietness of the Welsh countryside with unrestricted turmoil. //// Moon Goose put Space, Psych, Prog, and Motorik in a bag, shook it, poked it, and burned it, then spread the ashes from the top of the Welsh Mountains with the wind in their faces until their eyes were crying black tears." //////// Released January 27, 2024 // Written and performed by Moon Goose // Murmurations was recorded, Produced and mastered by Adam Fuest at Twin Peaks Studio, Llandrindod Wells, Wales." https://moongoosecult.bandcamp.com/album/murmurations | * | 1:14:36 (Pop-up)

The Cure | Play For Today | Seventeen Seconds | Elektra | 1980 | “Play For Today” was the second single from "Seventeen Seconds". It was one of the earliest songs written for the album, completed before the previous album "Three Imaginary Boys" was released. When Lol Tolhurst was asked which song got the best crowd reaction live, he responded: "Cure fans always sing along to the keyboard line of “Play For Today,” which is pretty wonderful to experience!" As part of a Q&A in the Cure News #6 fanzine from 1989, frontman Robert Smith had this to say on the song’s inspiration: "the fraudulent aspects of an insincere relationship." | 1:28:51 (Pop-up)
The Cure | M | Seventeen Seconds | Elektra | 1980 | Some debate that this song is about the character M from a 1930's Fritz Lang film...other say it's about his wife to be and longitime partner Mary. What we DO know is that it is now part of an second album that is solidly cannon of Goth and postpunk culture. Where it's predecessor focuses on jabby stabby angular postpunk, Seconds is far more sleek and even more gloomy. There's not a lot of distortion to be found here, but a lot of icy sangfroid. And YOU can WIN A LIMITED EDITION PICTURE DISC of this record with a mininum $20 donation to the show, tonight! RIGHT NOW! So get a pledging! | 1:32:34 (Pop-up)

The Serfs | Order Imposing Sentence | Half Eaten By Dogs | Trouble In Mind Records | 2023 | LP possibly yours (draw to be held) for a $20 (minimum) donation -- "“Half Eaten by Dogs” is a wide-eyed look through a scope into a desiccated and heathenish vision, where ice-encrusted synth harmonies command oozing chemical rhythms and drilled-out elemental rock formations. There’s a psychedelic melancholy to it-- in both the abstract lyrical sense, with doomed proclamations of natural and supernatural disasters, and the more tangible musical sense. It veers all over the map of tenebrous drum and synthesizer industries and stygian guitar implements, at times with a cautious paranoia and at times with tuneful defiance and exuberance (and in some moments harmonica, saxophone or flute). The album kicks off with the driving ‘Order Imposing Sentence’, a motorik rocker propelled by machine-driven rhythm & tarnished guitar riffing. ‘Cheap Chrome’s skeletal pulse drops in next, summoning the spirit of Cabaret Voltaire’s synth heartbeat into a modern-day mirror reality. ///// CLICK THIS LINK TO DONATE TO WFMU (via Transmissions From Echo Beach) | 1:41:38 (Pop-up)
The Serfs | Cheap Chrome | Half Eaten By Dogs | Trouble In Mind Records | 2023 | "Anyone paying attention can see that Cincinnati, OH is a very real hotbed of musical creativity at the moment, and the three members of The Serfs - Dylan McCartney (vocals, percussion, guitar, bass, electronics), Dakota Carlyle (Electronics, bass, guitar, vocals) & Andie Luman (vocals, synths) - and their respective side projects (The Drin, Crime of Passing, Motorbike) are undeniably near the center of Cincinnati’s neu-underground scene. After releasing albums on Berlin minimal-synth label Detriti & Seattle-based DREAM Records in 2018 & 2022 respectively, the band makes the move to Trouble In Mind for their third and best album yet. “Half Eaten By Dogs” puts a decidedly Midwestern spin on the modernist twitch of future-forward bands like Total Control or Cold Beat as well as the post-industrialist dance floor grime of Skinny Puppy, Dark Day, This Heat or Factrix." //// LP possibly yours (draw to be held) for a $20 (minimum) donation -- " ///// CLICK THIS LINK TO DONATE TO WFMU (via Transmissions From Echo Beach) | 1:44:49 (Pop-up)
The Serfs | The Dice Man Will Become | Half Eaten By Dogs | Trouble In Mind Records | 2023 | "The Dice Man Will Become’s triumphant melody comforts as its Rother-like guitar volleys aims skyward. Half Eaten By Dogs” successfully coalesces everything that The Serfs have accomplished to date, but with greater intent and purpose than their preceding albums by a mile. There are songs to dance to, and songs to take in during a storm or while riding free through the roads of the world. It may be a step further down into the catacombs for the band, but if the principle of correspondence is correct, then they could be their way to somewhere higher." "At various points throughout Half Eaten by Dogs, there’s a sense of anything-goes possibility, whether through the EBM robotics of “Electric Like An Eel” or the sax-laced Twin Peaks coldwave of “Spectral Analysis.” Despite the haunted atmosphere in which much of The Serfs’ music dwells, they before sounded as if they were having this much fun exploring the possibilities of where those shadowy tunnels might lead. Which, occasionally, is pure hedonic bliss; on “Club Deuce” Andie Luman sings, “Moving to my surroundings/Is my dopamine pleasure,” and the feeling is nothing if not infectious, a pleasure that can be all yours." ///// LP possibly yours (draw to be held) for a $20 (minimum) donation -- CLICK THIS LINK TO DONATE TO WFMU (via Transmissions From Echo Beach) |

Paul Anka | Lovecats | Rock Swings | Centaurus Entertainment | 2005 | The idea of an established vocalist giving rock hits a "standards" treatment was earlier realized by Anka's contemporary Pat Boone in the 1997 album, In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy, with Boone doing covers of songs by Alice Cooper, Van Halen and Judas Priest. That same year, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé covered Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" in a lounge-jazz style on the 1997 compilation album release, Lounge-A-Palooza. Anka also covers "Black Hole Sun" on Rock Swings. After the release of this album, Anka was awarded a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto. | 1:55:23 (Pop-up) |
