LYR | Theodolite! Pt I | An Unnatural History | Angry Mob LLC & Domino Music Publishing | 2023 | Released September 14, 2023 / Written & Performed by Simon Armitage, Patrick James Pearson and Richard Walters / Additional musicians: Bethany Bellis, Mike Monaghan and Matthew Taylor / Recorded, Produced & Mixed by Patrick James Pearson at The Glaucus House. Additional Recording by Richard Walters / Mastered by James Bragg //// "Created as part of the Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone, supported by Barnsley Museums and Archives with funding from Barnsley Council and Historic England. //// With special thanks to Tegwen Roberts and Dominic Somers. //// "An Unnatural History was a poetic and musical happening celebrating Barnsley's Eldon Street through the lens of its former Natural History Museum. The museum, once housed in The Civic, was an emporium of fowl and fauna, some of it local, some of it more exotic. When the museum disappeared under somewhat mysterious circumstances, it lived on in memory and anecdote, with only the odd blurred photograph and dusty paperwork as evidence of its existence. Digging into archives and the psycho-geography of the locality, LYR metaphorically recreated the Museum as a kind of imaginarium of all things zoological, using it to investigate the dream life of Eldon Street past, present and future. In the spirit of the great circuses and fairs that have tripped through Barnsley, and the beasts that have passed through its streets (including elephants and whales), by way of the town's legendary Bunny Run and the animals that still make Eldon Street their natural habitat (from urban foxes to rare moths), a unique live performance of An Unnatural History on the stage of Barnsley's Parkway Cinema put Eldon Street back on the map, but a map where pigeons nest alongside phoenixes, two-headed cattle and other fabulous creatures...."" https://lyrband.bandcamp.com/
Morphine | Sharks Patrol These Waters | Volume 9 | RYKO / Rhino | 1995 | From a series that was amongst my favourites in the 90s... A v/a comp w/ thick CD magazine-styled booklet filled w/ interviews, photos & information. Many artists would give rarities / alt versions or unreleased tracks. This track was the first officially released version of this song. It would later be revamped & find a wider-audience on Morphine's thrid album; 1995's "Yes". In many ways I prefer this version to the much more full-throttled album take, but both are fantastic. | 0:07:06 (Pop-up)
Jello Biafra With Nomeansno | Sharks In The Gene Pool | The Sky Is Falling And I Want My Mommy | Alternative Tentacles / Fringe Product | 1991 | Victoria, British Columbia, Canada's legendary punk brothers John and Rob Wright (& entourage) team up with San Francisco's legendary punk mouthpiece Jello Biafra. Perhaps an unexpected collaboration at the time? Even more unexpectedly, I discovered Nomeansno's Jello-less Demo version of this song via the internet, which I did not know existed until this week. Totally different version & lyrics... clearly a work in progress at the time, but I was quite excited to find it! Instead of playing it in the set, I'll offer it up to you as bonus content here: Nomeansno - Sharks in the Gene Pool (Demo) [via YouTube]) | 0:09:23 (Pop-up)
Morphine | Sharks | Yes (Expanded Version) | RYKO / Rhino | 1995 | Studio/Album version of the track we played earlier in the set... Also, this is the 2018 remastered version of this 1995 track. | 0:15:59 (Pop-up)
LYR | Theodolite! Pt II | An Unnatural History | Angry Mob LLC & Domino Music Publishing | 2023 | Released September 14, 2023 / "Comprised of singer Richard Walters, producer Patrick J Pearson and poet Simon Armitage, LYR are the perfect combination of poetic spoken passages, soaring vocal melodies and imaginative, cinematic production. They are a progressive voice in the world of spoken word, thanks to Armitage’s compelling lyrics, as well as Pearson’s seductive bricolage of musical styles and Walters’ evocative vocals" https://lyrband.bandcamp.com/ | 0:18:20 (Pop-up)

C.C Orchestra | Life Is A Blast | Nome Noma 2: Québec Post-Punk Et New Wave 1979-1983 | Trésor National | 2023 | To celebrate the International Year of the Child, Montrealer Clare Schapiro has the idea of creating an ambitious musical spectacle completely conceived, composed and performed by and for kids. Their troupe, Children's Creations soon collects 350 young talents aged between 5 and 17 years old. To prepare or the release of a double album, a handful of musicians and singers are chosen to record the musicals' songs in the studio under the supervision of MIchelle Pagliaro and Pierre Labelle. The musical is a hit. This song is one of those songs...and accomanyies a scene in which teens revolt against false acccusations. What kind of false accusations!? We do not know...unless somehow we can dig up footage of this (likely insane) spectacle! | 0:29:47 (Pop-up)
Nowaves | O.D. | Odd Secrets | NoWaves | 2021 | 'Golden Apples' is covered by the Country Teasers and the mantra is chewed on the intro for so long that every GDR chewing gum becomes jealous. Odd Secrets is a killer 10-track post-punk album with a darfksurf vibe and a danceable goth pop sound from Dresden, Germany. The four wise men from the Eastern West present what may be their best record from their creative period to date. Although they stayed true to the typical Nowaves sound, they mixed in a little pinch of instant pop here and there. Mmmm, that tastes good! Still a long way from any kind of gloomy dismay, where attempts are made with cathedral force to create a mood in order not to get into the mood. | 0:31:53 (Pop-up)
ÖPNV | Shanghai Dreams | Deutch Funk Revolte | ÖPNV | 2022 | ÖPNV are a little bit funky, a little bit sleaze, a little bit DAF....This Berlin band delivers cold post-punk songs with early industrial elements...for fans of Einsturzende Neubauten, A Certain Ratio, Palais Schaumburg...and people who like to dance in dark corners. Highly recommended! he band was founded in 2019 and consists of the South Korean Hansol Kim (drums), the American Seth Sutton (bass) and the Berliners Maria Nesterowa (synths) and Magnus Krüger (vocals/synths). | 0:34:48 (Pop-up)
Sam Snitchy | Kim | Get Me Wrong | Voodoo Rhythm | 2022 | Sam Snitchy is a new Anti-Dance Band from Bern, Switzerland, a collaboration of Sam Snitchy aka Maniporno on vocals and the the musician and producer Marco Fuorigioco on bass, synthesizers, mpc. Sam Snitchy stands for a synthetical punk protest and on the new album "talking talking" he is once more coming up with nasty and deeply ironic thoughts about a growing shallow and controversial lifestyle in an overexcited consumer world. Musically, Fuorigioco keeps again focused on hypnotic fuzzy basslines over smashing beats, crossed by analog acid-synths and repetitive psychedelic organs. A mantric album to heal the shit out of your lost soul. Look for a new album out in 2024! | 0:37:11 (Pop-up)
POW! | Sugi Walks | Hi-Tech Boom | Castle Face | 2014 | San Francisco's POW! emerges from the tech-waste of the shiny/shitty new San Francisco – deep 80’s synth bass percolating under the circuit-swamp-fried-egg guitar…the drums a teenage tiger’s heartbeat and vocals delivered like a dead-pan face-slap from a kid half your age. Lots of sticky punk heart resin-layered in a futuristic-scanning bionic bop. For fans of Solid Space, Tubeway Army, The Units, The Screamers, and glittery black nail polish. | 0:40:24 (Pop-up)
Infant Sanchos | ...Und Woher Der Hass | Infant Sanchos | Contrazt! Records | 2019 | A New Wave of Berlin Hardcore! Infant Sanchos, drum machine and synthesizer. Dull bass, rugged edges, screaming for unemployment, undemanding but effective sound sequences. Mental hygiene of the generation mixed drink. From the dregs of the creative milieu, two Renegates, from Neukölln, out of boredom. The smoke from burning oscillators rises over the roofs. It stomps, screams; in the distance a saxophone sounds through the urban canyons. What the world needs now is another long-playing record from Infant Sanchos, those likeable figures in decline without a permanent position. Look no further, you humiliated, contemptible, enslaved and abandoned creatures: stressful music is danceable again. | 0:42:18 (Pop-up)
Men Without Hats | Nationale 7 | Nome Noma 2: Québec Post-Punk Et New Wave 1979-1983 | Trésor National | 2023 | Men Without Hats are a Canadian new wave and synth-pop band, originally from Montreal, Quebec. They achieved their greatest popularity in the 1980s with "The Safety Dance", a worldwide top ten hit (No. 3 in the United States), and "Pop Goes the World". When this song was initially written in 1979, it was called "Nationale 7" and used wholly English lyrics. The title "Freeways" began being used in reference to the song in 1982, with its release on the "I Got the Message" single, but songwriter Ivan Doroschuk would still refer to it as "Nationale 7" until 1985, when the 12" was released. Ivan would also refer to the song as "Men Without Hats' secret single" (a reference to its use as a B-side) | 0:44:44 (Pop-up)
WWINDO | Do Not Stack | Nome Noma 2: Québec Post-Punk Et New Wave 1979-1983 | Trésor National | 2023 | The group forms in Mauricie in 1982 under the driving force of two students of the Conservatoire, Pierre Bundock (sax, keys, vocals) and Guuy Pelletier (keyboards)...After relocating to Quebec City, they add several members including Celine Houde on vocals. On their process: "we experimented a lot with tape loops. We were a lot more experimentral than pop.....since we practiced in the electronic music studio of the universite Laval, we weren't bonafide punks but we had the attitude of squatters the way we used their equipment" Wwindo plays mainly in the Cegeps and small New Wave clubs between Shawinigan, Trois Rivieres and Quebec City. They move to Mlontreal, play along side the neoist Monty Cantsin (the multimedia, blood paintin neoist)...but eventially the band splits into two different factions.....and split into two groups: Buendock and Concept Variable, respectively. | 0:48:12 (Pop-up)

CHERRY CHEEKS | Ad Shark | CCIILP | Total Punk Records | 2023 | Released Oct 1, 2023. From Orlando, Florida. "Cherry Cheeks are back with the follow up to their highly praised debut LP. Now a full band based out of Portland, OR with a few successful tours under their belt and a strongly defined sound CCLPII picks up where last year's CHERRY RADIO EP left off. The songs are more fleshed out, the production crisper, and the hooks are gigantic with layers of synths and electronic bleeps and blurps peppered throughout. The manic energy is still front and center but the poppier elements hinted at with songs like 'Go Outside' and'Two Bugs' on their debut are given much greater focus on the album's hit heavy A-side. On the flip the album takes a darker and more sinister turn. The synths are more heavily featured the vocals have more bite and the punk muscle fully flexed. Cherry Cheeks prove they've got some staying power and I'm excited to see what they have in store for CCLPIII. Catchy, razor sharp, and 100% TOTAL PUNK" Cherry Cheeks (Bandcamp) | * | 1:12:12 (Pop-up) |
Sandy Dish | HMU | HMU | Dish Or Death | 2023 | Sandy Dish are from Melbourne, Australia. This song was released on: 2023-12-17. They state: "WE'RE A BAND! / DISH OR DEATH! / NEW AGE DISH!" INSTA: www.instagram.com/sandydish / FB: www.facebook.com/sandydishband" https://sandydish.bandcamp.com/ --- Excerpt from a write-up from a couple of years ago... "Sandy Dish: “Fuck Off! We Don’t Have Any More Songs” //// AUGUST 24, 2022 BY TYLER JENKE //// Melbourne band Sandy Dish made their debut in October of 2018, sharing a two-track demo that lasted for fewer than five minutes. Dubbed Gr8test Hits, Rarities, B-Sides, Live At Madison Square Gardens: The Early Years (Demos) One More Time, it was a fitting introduction to the Melbourne quintet’s sense of humour. //// Since then, the group – comprising vocalist Brook Storti, guitarists Andy O’Connor and Lachlan Meager, bassist Tiffany Fowler, and drummer Willis Hugisloot – have played numerous high-energy shows and released two EPs (2020’s God Might Be Gay and 2021’s Album) that combine their punk sensibilities, musical intensity, and trademark humour. //// Sandy Dish have not been immune to the impacts of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. But despite releasing their first EP amid lockdown and being forced to delay the live launch of their second EP by seven months, the band persevered, anointing 2022 “The Year Of The Dish.” Alongside their regular live shows, semi-regular Once A Month podcast, and hilarious social media presence, Sandy Dish have managed to not only record another EP, but also curate a mammoth launch show, with their Big Dish Out festival set to take place on Friday, 26th August in Melbourne, with Zig Zag, Baby Mullet and more joining the bill." | * | 1:13:23 (Pop-up) |

3eme Sexe | Fire In Your Eyes | Je T'aime Que Vous Voulez | 3eme Sexe Media | 2009 | Presumably named after the first track of French New Wave Band Indochine's 3rd record...With simple recording technology and using only original vintage material (analogue keyboards, synths and effects devices) as well as rock'n'roll guitars and classic 60s female vocals, 3eme Sexe create their own anarchic cosmos. The influences are Sixties Beat, Seventies Pop, Yeah Yeah Style and French Song. The musical mastermind behind the 3rd Sex is the musician, composer and producer Justin Schoening. Justin has been active in the electronic scene with 3eme Sexe in various line-ups since 2006. | 1:33:40 (Pop-up)
Das Hobos | Suzuki Motorcycle Club | Cash Only | Hobos & Gutfeeling Records | 2016 | You can dance in the Suzuki Motorcycle Club! While the bass crackles like Sly Stone and the flow flutters like Garland Jeffreys, a club spirit is conjured up. The playing by Tom Simonetti, LeRoy & Frank Nägele has the exuberant seriousness of an initiation rite. Whoever finds the guitar solo wins. And the beat comes babbling as coolly as if Prince was playing rock'n'roll. But no one believes that now. That's how it is with every club: you can give advice, give recommendations and warnings... it doesn't help. You have to go in yourself! Soulful. Deep. Cool. Always cash only. Day in, day out, Cash Only. Cash only over everything... and the money is magically gone. | 1:37:08 (Pop-up)

Tropa Magica | Mild Sauce | Mild Sauce Single | Tropvision Records | 2023 | Release just a few weeks ago, this new single has been an earworm for all the right reasons. First of all, the guitar part is similar to a favourite Tones on Tail, that being Twist. It's like...if AIR covered Twist. Anyhow..that gujitar hook is magical. We have played their cumbia cover of Miserlou (also amazing)...but this one...let's just drift away on dreamy shimmering guitars....The East L.A. duo...brothers David and Rene Pacheco made a name for themselves by combining alternative, grunge, and psychedelic rock with cumbia — a danceable genre that originates from Colombia and is typically grouped with tropical sounds like salsa, merengue and bachata, among many more. Goddamn these guys are good. So good. | * | 1:46:55 (Pop-up) |

Savarit | Amour De Tanger | French Riviera | Savarit | 2023 | Savarit, a guitarist of Franco-Iranian origin, has settled in the French-Swiss border area, proving in his songs that there are no borders in music. Leaving, wandering and travelling are all evoked by the chiming guitars and warm round bass tones. The music translates an urge to escape, to flee, to renew oneself through movement. And that's exactly the spirit on 'French Riviera'. A project that combines bossa, folk and surf-rock in a spirit free of all dogmas. | 1:56:58 (Pop-up) |
