I think there are aspects I could quibble with, but it's great to see a sustained and serious biog. that really draws on documentary sources and especially on Anderson's gift of Reed's archive to the NYPL. In a way, the strength of the biog. is a testament to the gift she gave the city in bestowing his archive at a public institution, for which she should be lauded (as she should be for much else!). So, I'm into it. It's unsparing but also deeply admiring, and it takes the people around Reed very seriously and does a good job of showing how much his work was always about the networks of people he moved in. And about New York. He was ours, and I miss him. I'm a sap, sure, but this book is kind of hitting me where I live.

Most recently, the primary visitors were groups of elementary school kids as it all fades into an elegaic haze of memory

I think there are aspects I could quibble with, but it's great to see a sustained and serious biog. that really draws on documentary sources and especially on Anderson's gift of Reed's archive to the NYPL. In a way, the strength of the biog. is a testament to the gift she gave the city in bestowing his archive at a public institution, for which she should be lauded (as she should be for much else!). So, I'm into it. It's unsparing but also deeply admiring, and it takes the people around Reed very seriously and does a good job of showing how much his work was always about the networks of people he moved in. And about New York. He was ours, and I miss him. I'm a sap, sure, but this book is kind of hitting me where I live.
