The Fall  Fall Sound   Favoriting Reformation! Post - TLC (Expanded Edition)  Cherry Red  2007 / 2020  "Reformation Post TLC is the twenty-fifth studio album by the Fall, released in the UK on 12 February 2007. The album features Mark E Smith and his wife, Elena, with newcomers Tim Presley and Rob Barbato (of Darker My Love [Presley also of White Fence & Drinks]), Orpheo McCord (of The Hill) and Dave Spurr (of Motherjohn). Presley, Barbato and McCord, all Americans, joined the band as emergency replacements for Ben Pritchard, Spencer Birtwistle and Steve Trafford, all of whom quit the band during an American tour in April 2006. In his 2008 autobiography Smith praised the Americans for revitalizing The Fall, due to their openness to new ideas and not being overly-impressed by influential UK bands (e.g., Oasis and the Stone Roses) that had shaped a generation of young English musicians. //// Smith said in an interview with Q that the "post-TLC" refers to the band after the "traitors, liars and cunts..." had left. //// Reformation Post TLC was reissued by Cherry Red Records in April 2020, both on vinyl and as an expanded 4CD edition."    0:02:38 (Pop-up)
The Fall  Fall Sound (Alternate Version)   Favoriting The Fall Box Set 1976-2007  Castle Music/Santuary Records  2007  Called the "Alternate" version ON the (Red) Fall Boxset & "Alternative" version on the Expanded Cherry Red Edition of the album, this is from an unreleased early demo mix of the album. From The Annotated Fall (Lyrics) "The opening noises are presumably meant to sound a bit like an alarm clock, waking one up to Fall Sound. Reformation Post TLC is actually the only album recorded with this particular band; it somehow seems like a typical move, perhaps a bit perverse but making its own kind of sense in Fall terms, for MES to pick this moment to proclaim that the Fall aesthetic is now being definitively presented, and to insist on it being a group phenomenon. And indeed, Reformation is an album that sounds like nothing but the Fall; even though it really doesn't sound like any other Fall album, it is probably as typical as any of them can claim to be. MES is emphatically not a solo artist, despite the fact that a lot of solo artists may have as much consistency in terms of personnel as the Fall, and a good many of them have much more. His band members write the majority of the music on each album, and somehow it all comes out sounding like the Fall. It is a fascinating phenomenon--musicians who seemingly aren't brilliant songwriters in their own right, judging by the evidence of non-Fall products by Fall members, bang out some riffs and present them to MES, who shapes them into Fall songs, and more often than not they work. In fact, against all reasonable expectations, a good many classics actually result from this process, and indeed continue to issue forth even to this day, as songs like "Victrola Time" and "Loadstones" demonstrate. MES once insisted that Fall members can't be great songwriters without him, because something will always be missing. He went on to specify, though, that what is lacking isn't his vocals and lyrics--it's just that he knows how to make people write great songs. I don't have a reference for this, but I'm confident I've conveyed the gist correctly. //// MES employs the phrase "Fall sound" in a rather unusual way in a 1980 interview: "[T]he music bit is very important. I mean, I'm not a bloody writer! I am one of the FALL, one of the Fall sound. The music should always represent what the singer is saying."    0:06:35 (Pop-up)

Around the time of its release, the band played a limited tour of six shows, part of which were recorded by the legendary Grant Showbiz, who worked with The Fall for many years and who was nominated for a Grammy Award. //////// HOUSE Of ALL decided to release a document of the period in the wake of their debut album. "Bay City Pistols" captures five storming live tracks, including the crowd fave Wet Leg / Can cover, "Ur Mum" / "Uphill", which lasts over 10 minutes, and incredible renditions of four album tracks plus three vastly reworked remixes of songs from the debut by outside producers. ////42 minutes." Madness  What On Earth Is It (You Take Me For?)   Favoriting Theatre of the Absurd Introduces C'est La Vie  CTUNN LLP / BMG  2023  Preview of the November album, this track released today. "Madness announce their first album in over seven years. While their albums don't come as thick and fast as in their nutty first run in the 1980s, Madness have been knocking out great records in the past couple of decades. And now after a seven-year wait, they've announced their latest studio effort Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est La Vie. The follow-up to 2016's Can't Touch Us Now is released in various physical and digital formats on November 17, 2023 and is available for pre-order now. Fans who pre-order from the official Madness store will get access to a pre-sale of a soon-to-be-announced London launch show for the album. /// "After a disparate couple of years which saw the band at their most polarised and fragmented, Madness reunited in an industrial unit in Cricklewood at the beginning of the year, where Suggs, Mark, Chrissy Boy, Mike, Lee and Woody realised that what united them was always bigger than what divided them," reads the blurb. "Emerging re-energised and reinvigorated with a fresh bounce in their nutty step, the result was their most harmonious recording experience to date." //// It continued: "For the first time ever, a brand new album came into the world that they were all completely agreed on. Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est La Vie is the band's inaugural foray into self-producing, working alongside engineer and mixer Matt Galsbey (Ed Sheeran, Maisie Peters, Rag’n’Bone Man). //// "The governing principle behind Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est La Vie, is: 'Let Madness be Madness'." https://www.madness.co.uk/  *   0:22:15 (Pop-up)

Hotel Lux  Strut (Live @ The State 51)   Favoriting The State Factory 51 Sessions: Hotel Lux  The State 51 Conspiray  2023  Once contenders for the mantle of Britain’s most self-conscious band — guilty, by their own admission, of pandering to audiences’ tastes following their move from Pompey to London — Hotel Lux have crafted a bold and bright identity that is truly their own...Now in 2023 Hotel Lux look set to become something their early critics might have not foreseen: a band full of confidence, with the ability to transcend their peers and carve out their own corner of the British music tapestry to confirm a legacy that is their own. Of their non-London roots...bassist Cam Sims says "“I always wonder, if I had lived in London, would I have been happy just being the mate of someone in a band? Would I have bothered even trying? Would I have been happy with the rider beers when my mates were playing?”  *   0:34:28 (Pop-up)

R.M.F.C.  The Trap   Favoriting The Trap - Single  R.M.F.C.  2023  Pretty brand new music from an amazing band, this single was release on Sept 6th. The bandcamp bio reads " Sydney, Australia. extremely talented, intelligent and famous child prodigy." These are the words of writer/performer/genius Buz Clatworthy...who elaborates "The whole child prodigy thing stemmed from the artist description/bio thing on my Bandcamp page which reads: “extremely talented, intelligent and famous child prodigy”. I just thought it was funny at the time and still do. It doesn't annoy me when it gets brought up in interviews/write-ups and people taking it seriously makes it funnier to me. I guess being younger may have influenced the lyrical themes and imagery especially with earlier releases. If I had have started the band now it probably wouldn't be called Rock Music Fan Club but that's life."  *   0:39:58 (Pop-up)
Lung Overcoat  Internal Silence   Favoriting Internal Silence  Scolex  1983  Lung Overcoat were a post-punk,darkwave band from San Antonio, Texas that formed in the early 80s. At a time when hardcore punk was springing up in Texas the band took up a style of music that very few in the US played. Their biggest influences were English gothic bands such as Bauhaus. They only had two official releases, one 7" and a second 12" EP "Climbing Up That Hill"    0:42:37 (Pop-up)
Flipper  Ha-Ha-Ha   Favoriting Sex Bomb Baby  Reppilf Music  1979  Flipper was founded in 1979, are definitely one of the most interesting punk bands and arguably the great forbears of noise rock and grunge. The band regularly performed in the San Francisco area and attracted a large following. Simultaneously, their uniquely slowed-down and raucous approach to punk managed to infuriate other members of the local punk scene, especially with the burgeoning popularity of faster-paced hardcore punk. Mark Arm claimed, in the 2006 documentary American Hardcore, that Flipper's charm as a band lay in their ability to upset audiences while attracting their undivided attention and curiosity at the same time. Fans began spray painting "Flipper Rules" in various locations around San Francisco and eventually the world    0:47:09 (Pop-up)
Sextile  Plastic   Favoriting Push  Sacred Bones  2023  Sextile are currently on tour promoting their latest release "Push". This queasy little piece of synth darkness comes to us courtesy of Brady Keehn and Melissa Scaduto. The band takes its name from the aspect of the same name in astrology, that being when noting or pertaining to the aspect or position of two heavenly bodies when 60° distant from each other. When asked about their sound..is it postpunk? darkwave? "I think it’s more like no-wave and then everything it followed from, once everyone was listening to Cabaret Voltaire, Human League, and Suicide, like that kind of stuff. Anytime someone compares us to them it’s awesome. When do you hear Suicide it makes you feel like a badass, and I want people to feel like that when they hear us. Because we feel like fucking tuff and sexy. That is a good feeling to have."    0:49:27 (Pop-up)
Bob Marley & The Wailers  Slave Driver (Live)   Favoriting Slave Drive Live at The Sundown Theatre Edmonton, UJK  Universal-Island Records Ltd.  1973  Originally from the Catch A Fire album released in 1973, this ripping version was recorded live in the UK on the supporting tour. All the songs were originals, and the instrumentation was minimalistic in order to bring out the passionate, often politically charged lyrics. Much of the appeal of the album lies in its sincerity and sense of purpose -- these are streetwise yet disarmingly idealistic young men who look around themselves and believe they might help change the world through music. After finishing a UK tour with Johnny Nash, they had started laying down tracks for JAD Records when a disputed CBS contract with Danny Sims created tensions. The band did not have enough money to return to Jamaica, so their road manager Brent Clarke approached producer Chris Blackwell, who agreed to advance The Wailers money for an album. They instead used this money to pay their fares back home, where they completed the recordings that would make this record...    0:52:04 (Pop-up)

Blonde Redhead  Sit Down for Dinner, Pt. 1   Favoriting Sit Down for Dinner  Section1  2023  On the edge of a new full length release & extensive Oct/Nov/Dec tour... "At the end of this week, the veteran indie rock experimentalists Blonde Redhead will release their first proper album in nine years, Sit Down To Dinner. They’ve been gradually sharing advance tracks all summer, including “Snowman,” “Melody Experiment,” and “Before.” They’re doing one last tease today, and it’s a big one. For their final advance single, Blonde Redhead are actually sharing two songs. At the center of the album sits a pair of title tracks, “Sit Down For Dinner (Part 1)” and “Sit Down For Dinner (Part 2).” A short film by Sebastian Mlynarski out today combines the two songs — the former slow and impressionistic, the latter more upbeat but still soft and dreamy. Like the album itself, the tracks are inspired by a passage from Joan Didion’s The Year Of Magical Thinking: “Life changes fast. Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends.” //////// Kazu Makino shared this statement:“Sit Down For Dinner” is written like a journal and I suppose it’s confessional. “Part 1” starts with me living on a remote island and contemplating what to do. “Part 2” is me writing to my mother and father alongside inspiration from Ms. Didion’s writing. It touches on death and destiny and how we move through our lives without knowing how and when the end will come (with no pity). I’m excited by the way I was able to put down my rather terrifying thoughts on top of “uplifting” music. You would never guess what I’m singing about." //////// Blonde Redhead - Sit Down For Dinner (Pts. 1 & 2) (Official Video)  *   1:05:50 (Pop-up)
Blonde Redhead  Sit Down for Dinner, Pt. 2   Favoriting Sit Down for Dinner  Section1  2023  Full album out Sep 29, more on the short film: "Directed by long-time Blonde Redhead collaborator Sebastian Mlynarski, “Sit Down For Dinner (Pts. 1 & 2)” collages historical news clips with stunning footage of founding members Kazu Makino and Amedeo and Simone Pace... "The inspiration for the film I made for "Sit Down For Dinner" was the result of long conversations with Kazu. It was important to both of us to create visuals that were deceptively simple. She told me that the song was partially written in honor of her friend's passing and that got us talking about death. We talked about the various types of death we experience in a lifetime, like an ego death, the death of a loved one, or a death of ideals," adds Mlynarski. //////// "Culturally there's been a lot of discussion about the death of masculinity so we were also interested in that. I turned to the footage of conflict, political uprisings, and sports. For every win there's a loss, for every victor, there's a loser. To a certain degree, I think we are always both. Some people die victorious on a hill somewhere, some die doing something they love, but there could also be someone who may die getting ready to sit down for dinner in front of their favourite television show." //////// " Blonde Redhead - Sit Down For Dinner (Pts. 1 & 2) (Official Video)  *   1:09:02 (Pop-up)

Flat Worms  See You at the Show   Favoriting Witness Marks  Drag City Inc.  2023  L.A.'s Flat Worms have released a stunner of a new album, and while this track may be a little atypical of the rest of the album, it seems to be the one I am drawn to play for this week's show. "Flat Worms return with new Ty Segall-produced album Witness Marks, a shape-shifting record that still holds their wired garage sound at its core." "Flat Worms were founded by singer and guitarist Will Ivy, previously a member of Bridez, Wet Illustrated, and Dream Boys. Ivy was working on his debut solo album, 2016's Scrap Plastic, when he found himself listening to some old Swell Maps records and was inspired to make some noisy and frantic rock & roll. Ivy recruited two friends to help him work out some tunes: bassist Tim Hellman, whose résumé includes stints playing with Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, and Sic Alps; and drummer Justin Sullivan, who has kept time for the Babies and Kevin Morby. Dubbing the trio Flat Worms, Ivy wasted no time taking Hellman and Sullivan into the studio, and their debut release, a three-song 7" titled "Red Hot Sand," appeared in April 2016." Milton is a poet, with several volumes under his belt, as well as an avant-garde puppeteer. Yet he's probably best known as vocalist/saxophonist with psycho-funk afro punk fake no-wave pogo jazz trio Blurt. Milton's group has produced an impressive string of albums, not to mention his numerous solo recordings. Brimming with the pogo punk energy the band are known for, the lead side "Cry" is a mesh of raw drums and piercing sax slowing down on the flip side to a head nodding pace with Milton's echoing refrains backed by the raw bounce of the band" Blurt 7inch (via All City Bandcamp)  *   1:22:46 (Pop-up)

Le Jour et la Nuit du Réel

Thrill Jockey Records

2023

Released Sep 22. "Cécile Schott, aka Colleen, has strolled a fascinating musical path for 20 years’ worth of releases. Her debut, 2003’s Everyone Alive Wants Answers, found her stealthily looping records scored in Paris libraries for tracks that sounded at once ancient and futuristic, perhaps from a hidden Indonesian island or a dream. From there, and before her seven-year recording hiatus in 2007, she created mini-symphonies for classical guitars and zithers, all manner of music boxes, and finally, the viola da gamba, after a trip to Japan had her considering the concept of stillness. Her seemingly boundless incorruptibility made for music that was always in the process of discovery, sometimes strange, other times disturbingly fragile. //////// But in 2017, a few years after re-emerging as a recording artist, she turned her attention to synthesizers. That year’s A Flame My Love, a Frequency, an album inspired partly by the horrors of 2015’s Paris terror attack, uses Critter and Guitari synths for tracks containing almost unbearable breath, light, and space. By 2021’s The Tunnel and the Clearing, she’d added a drum machine and an emphasis on melody for music that occasionally connected to artists who flirt between pop and experimentation, such as Molly Nilsson or Reymour. //////// None of this information is any real preparation for Le Jour et la Nuit du Réel, a double LP of solo instrumental suites composed on a Moog synth and all manner of analog delay. At times relentlessly dense and at others wistful, her back catalog at least hints at what’s on display here. All three movements of opener “Subterranean” feature sometimes frantic flicks of the keys, a soundtrack to a panicked escape on foot, becoming lighter with each pass. The two movements of “The Long Wait” seem to shed colors as the tracks pass. //////// Schlott’s winks in pop’s general direction find a place here as well. “To Hold and be Held’s” second movement sounds almost like an Auto-Tuned voice, while “Mon Coeur” repeats an ascending, then descending melody that, with some tweaks, might underpin some synthetic Kylie Minogue track fit for a boutique clothing store PA. Not only does Schlott re-imagine each track movement by movement, but over the course of the album, the day becomes night; tracks become lullabies for drifting away. The five movements of “Les Parenthèses Enchantées” feel like gentle nudges or whispers." https://colleencolleen.bandcamp.com/

The album’s name translates to ‘at its worst, it will be good.’ Which the band hope is “a beacon of hope in our ever socially, politically, and climatically challenged world”. “Our music is about building a bridge between the people and the music, being listenable, while being experimental and filling the audio spectrum.” Lalalar do not fuck around when it comes to writing songs, and while this track may just be slightly over the top with all its key changes and wibbly wobbly...that's what makes it great!  *   1:36:11 (Pop-up)

Dylan McCartney, Dakota Carlyle and Andie Luman have created a layered, complex electronic track with nods to other musical influences, with blues harmonics and funk basslines complementing their otherworldly vibe. The experimental arrangement invokes the likes of ’80s synth powerhouses The Cure and Depeche Mode, as the robotic sounds are punctuated by a groovy bassline pulsing underneath—creating the perfect dark wave club track. With the intrigue of “Electric Like An Eel” the band coyly elaborates: “An ‘electrophorus electricus’ swimming through a sewer on the moon, taking in the sights and making deals, stunning just to feel real.”  *   1:44:13 (Pop-up)

i once, a few years ago called out an obvious racist pretending to be asian in Samantha's comments (she's not on the schedule for a couple years now)...called the troll a "racist twat", which quite concealed how i'd deal with him (her?) if it was in person.
anyway the show host deleted my message, but not the post so it was just blank... did not delete the troll's many posts, even after Little Danny said she needed to "shut down that racist".
deleted after the show at some point.
but c'mon, just because she didn't like my terminology? but she's apparently okay with racist bullshit. some folks need their eyes checked.

i obfuscate and confuse trolls, that usually works. If they're obviously hateful disruptors, i don't engage...and advise others not to do so as well..

i always figure my thrift store clothing was dropped off when it no longer fit someone, due to cake and beer.

of course the garments with blood stains all over i've considered other possibilities!

i just peeked.
that looks like the same one that's around often, saying stupid things that i guess thinks are clever or funny but really are far too juvenile to be either. usually attaches a moniker to the comment, but a different one every time...but sort of *thematic*...
