He had a gallery in Munich and proposed to the city fathers to present a huge work by Walter de Maria for the 1972 Olympics, which the city fathers politely declined as too way out. Friedrich was so pissed off that he moved his gallery to Cologne and thence to New York City. That's why WdM's Earth Room is on permanent display in SoHo, Manhattan. He has always insisted on art works worth their salt being permanently displayed. I believe that is also the case at DIA Beacon.

He had a gallery in Munich and proposed to the city fathers to present a huge work by Walter de Maria for the 1972 Olympics, which the city fathers politely declined as too way out. Friedrich was so pissed off that he moved his gallery to Cologne and thence to New York City. That's why WdM's Earth Room is on permanent display in SoHo, Manhattan. He has always insisted on art works worth their salt being permanently displayed. I believe that is also the case at DIA Beacon.
