Big Clown | Frogman | BEATDOWN | Big Clown | 2023 | For the past four years or so Memphis’ Big Clown have been turning the circus upside down with a disarming mix of caustic punk, noise rock, and elements of hardcore. Their sound is fractured and frantic, darting around like a clown with it’s head cut off, the intensity arriving in swarms of blistering tempos, agitated lyrics, and spikes of chaos. The songs are built on fuzzy sludge and propulsive rhythms, finding the less often explored middle ground between bands like Melt-Banana, The Blood Brothers, and Torche. They might be my new favourite band. Fun Frog Fact: Wood frogs evolved to freeze up to 65% of their body every winter! The amphibians produce urea and glycogen to make a kind of “antifreeze” that fills and protects their cells and vital organs while the rest of the body freezes solid. | 0:02:02 (Pop-up)
Viagra Boys | Frogstrap | Street Worms | Year 0001 | 2018 | Sebastien informs us that this song is about “Smuggling a frog into a secret meeting by way of, uh, hiding it within one’s trench coat, due to the fact that frogs tend not to show up on sonar, or radar, or any type of spy surveillance where they could show up…” he also states that, “I hope you guys can relate”. Street worms was recently reissued on clear vinyl with 5 bonus tracks. It is a fantastic album and HIGHLY recommended! GLASS FROGS MAKE THEIR SKIN TRANSPARENT BY HIDING RED BLOOD CELLS IN THEIR LIVERS In order to protect themselves from predators while resting on leaves, these tiny frogs make their skin nearly transparent by packing their red blood cells into their livers. Since nearly 90% of their blood cells are collected in one place, the rest of the body appears virtually invisible. | 0:03:10 (Pop-up)
Heavy Monkey | Carpet Frog | Heavy Monkey | Butnik | 2020 | Heavy Monkey hail from Israel. What is Heavy Monkey? An exercise of pure, creative freedom? A shortcut to INSANITY? A Voyage to explore new Sounds? A total waste of Time…? Feed the Monkey… And he will grOW! FREE the Monkey inside… And will dance frantically in a Sufis Trance Pissing on the boundaries of Humanity Rewinding Evolution Showing the crazy JUNGLE that still surrounds us Swinging from tree to tree Helping each other take out flees We are on an intriguing EXPEDITION We have nothing better to do This is one HEAVY MONKEY!!!!! Fun Frog Fact #3...according to the urban dictionary, a carpet frog is...a fart. ie “Jack’s been passing carpet frogs all morning after those beans...” | 0:06:24 (Pop-up)
Belle & Sebastian | Funny Little Frog | The Life Pursuit | Rough Trade | 2006 | "Funny Little Frog" is the first single released from Scottish indie pop band Belle & Sebastian's seventh studio album, The Life Pursuit (2006). The track was released in January 2006 on Rough Trade Records and was produced by Tony Hoffer. The single became the band's highest-charting single in the UK, reaching number 13. Paedophryne amauensis is a species of microhylid frog endemic to eastern Papua New Guinea. At 7.7 mm (0.30 in) in snout-to-vent length, it is considered the world's smallest known vertebrate. The frog lives on land and its life cycle does not include a tadpole stage. Instead, members of this species hatch as 'hoppers': miniatures of the adults. They are capable of jumping thirty times their body length. | 0:08:33 (Pop-up)
Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 | The Frog | Look Around | UMG | 1966 | Look Around is the third studio album by Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '66. It was released in 1967. Following this album, Mendes dismissed the musicians and singer Janis Hansen and brought in Karen Phillip to sing with holdover Lani Hall. Sergio Mendes took a deep breath, expanded his sound to include strings lavishly arranged by the young Dave Grusin and Dick Hazard, went further into Brazil, and out came a gorgeous record of Brasil '66 at the peak of its form. Here Mendes released himself from any reliance upon Antonio Carlos Jobim and rounded up a wealth of truly great material from Brazilian fellow travelers: Gilberto Gil's jet-propelled "Roda" and Joao Donato's clever "The Frog," Pumpkin toadlets are native to parts of Brazil—they are tiny, coin-sized frogs that are known for their ridiculously awful landing skills after jumping. Slow motion video shows that they make no attempt to orient themselves after jumping into the air, crash landing helter-skelter into whatever surface they encounter. CAN | Little Star Of Bethlehem (Full Length Version - Alternate Mix) | Get The Can Essential Rarities 1968-1973 (Volume Two: 1968-1973) | Bootleg? | 1968 | "This is a rare 12 minute mix of "Little Star Of Bethlehem" by Can. This one differs greatly from the version released on the "Delay 1968" album in 1981. There were some overdubs that were removed for the edited down version I guess in an attempt to make the song sound more commercial. There have been several versions of the alternate "Little Star" released over the years with differing edits and unfortunately poor sound quality. This is the only edit that includes both the full lyrics from the alternate versions on "Unopened" and "Radio Waves" (the 9 minute versions) as well as all the "Delay 1968" set of lyrics. Usually they would either have the line "Bethlehem Steel is Better For Your Meal" (alternate) or "Soda Pop is Better in the morning when you have nothing to talk about" (Delay), well this one has them both, plus some that are in neither versions (the line about the "Christmas Tree on New Years Eve"). In addition to that the sound quality here is fantastic. A must hear for any Can fan" CAN - Little Star Of Bethlehem (Full Length Version - Alternate Mix) [Youtube] | 0:24:34 (Pop-up)
The Fall | Victoria Train Station Massacre | New Facts Emerge | Cherry Red Records | 2017 | "New Facts Emerge is the 31st and final studio album by English band The Fall, released on 28 July 2017 by Cherry Red Records. //// This is the first album since Are You Are Missing Winner (2001) not to feature keyboardist Elena Poulou, who quit the Fall the previous year after separating from frontman Mark E. Smith, thus reducing the band to a quartet for the first time since the early 1990s. Smith died in January 2018, and no new or archival recording have since been issued as of late 2021, making New Facts Emerge the band's probable final album. //// The title of the song "Victoria Train Station Massacre" caused controversy, as the album announcement came just a week after the Ariana Grande concert bombing, which occurred in a foyer connecting Manchester Arena to Manchester Victoria railway station. A representative for the band confirmed that the track's title was an unfortunate coincidence, and the artwork was sent off for manufacture "long before the terrible events in Manchester"." | 0:36:59 (Pop-up)
The Fall | New Facts Emerge | New Facts Emerge | Cherry Red Records | 2017 | The title track from The Fall's final album. Apparently, Mark E. Smith had many ideas for future songs prior to his death in 2018. //// Various notes that may or may not be true from the "annotatedfall" page. "1. It has been remarked that this sounds like "Broken Boy Soldier" by the Raconteurs, according to Reformation. It does, albeit in a way that could be a coincidence. Like many Fall songs that resemble previous numbers, the song is musically almost identical, but the overall feel is completely different. ///////// From Tony Wifner: "I saw a repeat of an episode of [Scottish detective show] Taggart recently where the headline "New Facts Emerge" was clearly shown on a local newspaper." ///////// According to @imperialwaxband during Tim Burgess twitter listening party devoted to New Facts Emerge, "So this was aimed at ISIS" ///////// 2. Note from wal: There have been reports of animals and fish being carried up within storms, winds, etc., and then raining down in a biblical sense. The raining of frogs was a part of the Paul Thomas Anderson film, Magnolia. ///////// "Frogs" is also a British epithet for the French, in reference to their cuisine, which includes frogs' legs. In the 19th century this term was applied to the Dutch, who were said to be swamp-dwellers; around the time of the first World War, it was transferred to the French (thanks to julibront). ///////// There is a passage here which sounds French. Antoine says "right around 0:57 the French voice says 'comme un nouvel immigrant de Marseilles, on dit, les cochons, Saxons, laissez-les tranquilles' so, 'like a new immigrant from Marseilles, we say, the Saxon pigs, leave them alone.'" ///////// 3. "Sprogs," or a stuttering run back at "frogs." If the former, Gizmoman says that sprog means child in "working class English." According to Kevin Prince, "Sprogs is also a generic military term for anyone with less service than you e.g. you sprog, I was doing that when you were still at school." ///////// 4. From Maldoror on the Fall online forum: I've just realised that the scrambled (echoey) backing lyrics to New Facts Emerge come from the Jacques Brel song "Les Bourgeois": Les bourgeois / c'est comme les cochons / Plus ça devient vieux / plus ça devient con! //// Meaning: "The bourgoisie / are like pigs / the older they get / the more they become idiots (cunts)" //// Brel never sang the final "con" (cunt), although it was always implied by the rhyme and a sting of music. ///////// Al points out that the lyrics here vary from Brel's version: "Actually, the french part is : Les bourgeois / c'est comme les cochons / Plus ça devient vieux / plus ça devient GROS // Meaning: 'The bourgoisie/ are like pigs/ the older they get/ the more they become FAT,' the last word being the only difference with the Brel lyrics. // Dan: It might be worth noting, in relation to the Jacques Brel quotation, that MES - according to Pamela Vander's instagram account, loved Scott Walker's rendition of Brel's Jackie: "Mark adored it, blasted it a lot, sometimes on repeat." | 0:37:55 (Pop-up)
Osees | Toadstool | Protean Threat | Castle Face Records | 2020 | "Protean Threat is the twenty-third studio album by American garage rock band Osees, released on September 18, 2020, on Castle Face Records. Following the band's previous album, double LP Face Stabber, frontman John Dwyer has said that he intended for Protean Threat to be much like a punk album, shorter in length and composed primarily of short songs. It is the band's first full-length album to be released under the name Osees. //// In an apparent response to the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread cancellation of concerts, the band initially previewed the album in a rough form as a single take live rehearsal video that premiered on YouTube in March 2020, albeit with a different track order. //// Two tracks performed during the Protean Threat live rehearsal video but ultimately not included on the album were subsequently released elsewhere. “Dark Weald” came out as a limited edition lathe cut vinyl single on August 23, 2020, and was later released digitally. A cover of the Alice Cooper & The Spiders song “Don’t Blow Your Mind” then came out on the band’s Weirdo Hairdo EP, released December 18. 2020. //// On December 11, 2020, Osees released Panther Rotate, a remix album featuring experimental reworkings of several tracks from Protean Threat. //// Tracks from Protean Threat were also performed as part of Osees' live recording and subsequent album Levitation Sessions, one of two pay-per-view streamed shows the band put on in 2020. | 0:42:02 (Pop-up)

Jah Wobble | Last Exit | Last Exit Single | Cleopatra Records | 2023 | Jah Wobble’s upcoming full length, A Brief History Of Now, will be released on the 11th August via Cleopatra Records. Co-written, produced and performed with another post-punk hero, Jon Klein (Siouxsie & The Banshees), the album packs a powerful punch both musically and lyrically as the two veterans deliver an energetic and innovative collection of musical treatises. Last Exit, a pulsating, psychedelic-tinged track that interweaves Jah Wobble’s distinctive bass with a syncopated spoken-word vocal and Klein’s razor-sharp guitar. Wobble uses the song to provoke and process current events that continually threaten to suffocate us before we escape. The accompanying video, made with Vicente Cordero from Industrialism Films, vividly brings the song to life and offers a captivating catharsis for the post-post-postmodern age. “It’s all about the dopamine rush. Assault on the senses. Bang! Bang! Bang! Rush after rush after rush. But never satisfied. No satisfaction. Never any conclusion. Always moving. Appearances arising. Ephemeral. Lacking substance. But often so beautiful and exciting. Glorious esoterica.” | * | 1:01:12 (Pop-up) |

Frankie and the Witch Fingers | Futurephobic | Futurephobic Single | Greenway Records | 2023 | Futurephobic is taken from their seventh studio album Data Doom, due September 1 via The Reverberation Appreciation Society / Greenway Records. “The main riff was an idea we came up with during the writing process for our album Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters… but we kept it in our back pockets, as it wasn’t quite fitting in with the theme of that album,” the band explains. “When we started writing Data Doom, it reemerged very organically and everyone latched onto the idea surprisingly fast and ran with it. We expanded on the main riff and came up with the other parts and overall arrangement while writing with our new lineup in our studio in LA. The whole process went surprisingly smoothly. We added backing vocals and overdubs while on tour last year in Europe, doing all the passes to complete the song from various apart-hotels, attics in France and Amsterdam.” The album is available for pre-order and promises to be very, very excellent!!! | 1:09:06 (Pop-up)
Snõõper | Unable | Super Snõõper | Third Man Records | 2023 | With songs that explode like a nailbomb and travel at a breakneck speed while retaining the precision of a Formula 1 driver, Snõõper’s debut album Super Snõõper, out this Friday on Jack White’s Third Man Records, feels as extravagant and lawless as child’s play. Perhaps it comes as no surprise then that Blair Tramel, the band’s lead, works as an early education teacher on the side. She clearly, and quite enviably, has retained the mischievous glee of childhood, suffusing the band’s music with an irrepressible energy, contagious enough to make even the most fed up parents dance along with the kids — both literally and in spirit. I am overjoyed with this cover of Unable. Very few bands could pull off this brilliant piece of work by Suburban Lawns...but Snooper adds an extra layer of fucked up urgency and grit to an already brilliant song. EXEK | Unseasonable Warmth | Advertise Here | Castle Face | 2022 | "“Unseasonable Warmth...” It’s a hazy, psychedelic krautrock/dub-punk jam that echoes the collaborative work between Can’s Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit and Public Image Limited’s Jah Wobble, as well as the druggy disorientation of late Portishead and Beak>. It’s at once sinister and beautiful, with horns and synths intertwining into a mesmerizing sheet of sound. A statement released with the song reads, “Post-punks EXEK turn their gaze towards hip-hop for six-and-a-half stretched-out minutes. During that time, they’re looking out at a landscape resembling something between Ballard’s The Drowned Earth and Waterworld. Drums and bass act as cinder blocks that submerge, whilst thankfully short blasts of trumpet and synths assist in keeping buoyant. Just lay off the benzo’s when dozing off on pool toys.”" | 1:27:49 (Pop-up)

Space | I am Unlke Any Lifeform You've Ever Met | Avenging Angels | Space are a band from Liverpool, England, who formed in 1992 initially as a trio of Tommy Scott (vocals, bass, guitar), Jamie Murphy (vocals, guitar) and Jamie Island (drums), who was later replaced by Andy Parle. Keyboard player Franny Griffiths joined the line-up a year later, and the band signed to Gut Records in 1995, eventually rising to prominence with hit singles such as "Female of the Species", "Me and You Versus the World", "Neighbourhood", "Avenging Angels" and "The Ballad of Tom Jones", the latter a duet with Cerys Matthews of Catatonia. Space pursued an eclectic sound dubbed "queasy listening" by critics, embracing electronica and sampling in their work and drawing from genres as diverse as hip hop, techno, post-punk, ska, lounge music, easy listening and film scores, the result of the differing tastes between band members. The group were also noted for their deliberately tongue-in-cheek, dark humoured lyrics inspired by films, which frequently deal with topics such as serial killers, failed relationships, social outcasts, and mental illness. Whilst Space's eclecticism and camp humour polarised listeners and critics, they have maintained a devoted cult following..their seventh record was released in 2021... | 1:46:31 (Pop-up)
Vanishing Twin | Afternoon X | Afternoon X | Fire Records | 2023 | Vanishing Twin furthers their exploration of decidedly experimental territories with Afternoon X. Crafted with a playful balance of humour and rigour, with each member embracing the role of the multi-instrumentalist and process, over outcome. Following a series of line-up changes, Vanishing Twin is now the tightly honed collective of singer and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas, drummer Valentina Magaletti (Holy Tongue, Tomaga, Moin) and bassist Susumu Mukai (Zongamin). Harnessing the diverse touchstones of its members; Lucas’ left-field song-craft, Magaletti’s singular approaches to experimental percussion, and Mukai’s long history in the production of electronic music, the band has refined a hypnotic sound at the juncture of minimalism, kosmische, post-punk, and dream-laden, psychedelic pop. | 1:49:56 (Pop-up)
