...now, back in the day when it actually came out - when I was a little schoolkid ...the Sabbath fans were the BadBoys. Who smoked pot & got in real trouble...

Wull - everything that defines Metal - Sabbath codified it all in one place. They started in the 1960s (barely) - & were Hippes & their fast mode was really a Boogie. But Iommi tuned lower cause his fingertips got chopped off - the whole deal... Honestly - Sabbath idolized Zep - & they were pals.

A friend recently gave me the Acid Nightmares comp in the same series, which led to my finding my favorite Discogs comment of all time:

"Not sure where they get off calling this a swirl color vinyl. It is ultra clear disks with yellow, green, and orange neon splatters. My disk 2 is almost completely clear with a few specs of neon here and there. I feel this was falsely advertised. It's still a great compilation, but calling it "neon blotter SWIRL" is pretty far from what I actually received. Oh well, hopefully this comment will save others from some disappointment" [lack of terminal punctuation sic and awesome]

Sure, I think you're right. In one sense - it's all Blues. In another sense - Metal recalls much that is very European Classical, & has many parrallels to that. Zeppelin explore Folk & MiddleEastern influences - more diverse than many credit them for. Sabbath as I said would often accelerate into a kind of Boogie, in fact. Ozzy was a JamesBrown & Soul enthusiast more than most realize - & Iommi loved Jazzy Django Reinhardt (who also modeled being a Great Gittarist with fewer fully functional fingers to Iommi) - more influences than we might think typify Sabbath...
