Memorial Day.
A sad & somber day as war has been the default position for much of humanity worldwide, for all of my 64 years on the planet.
So, I ask the question posed here in song by David Maloney wherein he asks the question....WHY WAR??
Maybe if we all sing it loud enough, together, it can become a reality.
Memorial Day:

Songs alone can't change a thing, but when they become a call to action is when things can change. I hope you enjoyed the David Maloney song.

Americans understand that Memorial Day, or "Decoration Day," as my parents called it, has something to do with honoring the nation's war dead. It is also a day devoted to picnics, road races, commencements, and double-headers. But where did it begin, who created it, and why?
dday:
It's the day I fell 17' from a ladder onto my chest, bending my mid back in a way that damaged several thoracic vertebrae and putting me into the world of chronic pain ever since.
Some days are better than others, no day is pain free,
not complaining, just stating facts

I like Floyd not as rabidly as some (Pink, Uncle, Count, Kitty Boy), but they are interesting and hey, I've never toured the world over making music, so they must've done something right :)

He was a true gentleman.
Polite and soft spoken & what a smile (false teeth ya know, his teeth left him in the 60's).
At the time, a guitarist friend the late Bill Perry of Middletown,NY was his lead player in his duo.
Friends Will Hoppey & Lenny Hayden opened for him at a joint in Monticello,NY called Sacalwags.
Lenny became Ritchie's lead player when Bill passed.
I have a B&W photo of the 4 of them if you'd like a copy, be glad to send it to you.
I gave Ritchie an 8x 10 of it when he played a gig in Blairstown, NJ in '09.

Red and white, blue suede shoes
I'm Uncle Sam, how do you do?
Give me five, I'm still alive
Ain't no luck, I learned to duck
Check my pulse, it don't change
Stay seventy-two come shine or rain
Wave the flag, pop the bag
Rock the boat, skin the goat
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my
I'm Uncle Sam, that's who I am
Been hiding out in a rock and roll band
Shake the hand that shook the hand of P.T. Barnum and Charlie Chan
Shine your shoes, light your fuse
Can you use them old U.S. Blues?
I'll drink your health, share your wealth
Run your life, steal your wife
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my
Back to back chicken shack
Son of a gun, better change your act
We're all confused, what's to lose?
You can call this song the United States Blues
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my
My my my oh my my my my
Summertime done, come and gone, my guy

Boys were required to wear a dress shirt & tie.
I showed up in a khaki green t-shirt with a red, white & blue peace sign motif. I still have the class photo.
My Principal (mrs. b8tch sent me home (a half block walk) and said she was going to have me expelled.
When I got home my Dad happened to be home for lunch (a rarity).
He asked what happened, I told him.
We marched back up to the school where he told the Principal in no uncertain terms that The US Constitution gives his son the right to peaceful protest & if you attempt to expel him, I will have your job.
I took the photos dressed as I came.
Thanks Dad for always having my back.

When she was 6 years old in 1944, she walked from berlin to Hamburg with her mother and sisters. The men were all dead.
They knew the Russians were coming from the east and everyone knew what that meant.
She was told by her mother that they would walk west to Hamburg, and they would "find the Americans" because they knew then that they would be safe.
And so it happened.
These are the stories I think of on Memorial Day

And the king of Zam, he answered.
They fashioned their weapons one upon one
Ton upon ton, they called for war at the rise of the sun.
Out went the call to one and to all
That echoed and rolled like the thunder.
Trumpets and drums, roar upon roar
More upon more.
Rolling the call of "Come now to war."
Throughout the night they fashioned their might
With right on the side of the mighty.
They puzzled their minds plan upon plan
Man upon man
And at dying of dawn the great war began.
They met on the battlefield banner in hand.
They looked out across the vacant land.
And they counted the missing, one upon one,
None upon none.
The war it was over before it begun.
Two little kings playing a game.
They gave a war and nobody came.
And nobody came.
And nobody came.
And nobody came.
And nobody came.
