Dave Okumu | Blood Ah Go Run | I Came From Love | Transgressive Records | 2023 | I Came From Love is a tapestry of the Black experience that explores ancestry, the legacy of slavery, what it means to exist in an unjust society, and Okumu’s own family history. London's Dave Okumu Okumu has chosen the moniker ‘Dave Okumu & the 7 Generations’, which he sees as “my actual ancestors, the ancestors of others, my musical ancestors, and my descendants”. | 0:02:35 (Pop-up)
Benefits | Warhorse | Nails | Invada Records UK | 2023 | Kingsley Hall, frontman of Benfits says this of the song: " “At some point if the boot continues to stamp on us, we’re going to react. Things bug me. They start as little irks and become fiercer. It can take days, sometimes minutes. The phrase “cost of living” being blurted out by an MP when confronted with the poverty of their constituents. Simpering and grovelling to decrepit hierarchical systems. Pageantry and pomp in a time of austerity and cuts. ‘Warhorse’ is a battle. It’s about being tired of being told there’s no options left – being told to bow and courtesy and to shut your face. ‘Warhorse’ is about the need to push that boot back from our faces, raise our heads, stand up and fight.” | 0:06:11 (Pop-up)
Coach Party | Micro Aggression | Micro Aggression Single | Chess Club Records | 2023 | The Isle of Wight four-piece say of this tune: " this song goes out to those whose sense of humour largely involves micro-dosing others with hurtful and oppressive comments, followed by a ‘woah I was only joking’" | 0:08:58 (Pop-up)

We were playing Burnt Pictures as part of the set to try and explore different structures, and we invited up OneDa to freestyle with us, and it was exactly what the track was missing.” | 0:11:37 (Pop-up)

Regardless, here's the newest track from the forthcoming 11 song full-length. Everything John Dwyer does is fantastic, and this is no exception. This album will also feature a cover of Blurt's The Fish Needs A Bike; which has been covered earlier this year by Snapped Ankles on their Blurtations album. So there's that, too. Loose Articles | Sinead Loves Bitcoin | Sinead Loves Bitcoin EP | Alcopop! Records | 2023 | Released April 24, 2023 & available for free on Bandcamp. They are a 4-piece all-female Manchester band. "Loose Articles aren't your typical punk band. Living the 9-5 as many of us do, but once it hits beer O’clock, a different animal emerges. They began their musical escapades by aiming (& evidently achieving) to “make music because we wanted to prove a point that women can do it just as well as men. it became the first inspiration, then we realised we’re pretty alright at it so now we’re doing it for us and having a right laugh with it.” //// Though they’ve drawn comparisons with Wire and The Slits it’s The Fall who stand out as the major touchstone for the band – longtime Fall producer (& Pixies collaborator) Simon ‘Ding’ Archer, recorded & produced ‘Orchid Lounge’ EP in recognising something of that group’s surrealist street poetry in Loose Articles. //// "We have a lot of political messages about what’s on our mind” says bassist and vocalist Natalie, "I just write whatever pisses me off at the time, it touches on subjects like work, being scared of buses, having social anxiety in big public situations.”" Loose Articles: Sinead Loves Bitcoin | * | 0:25:26 (Pop-up) |
Stuck | Time Out | Freak Frequency | Born Yesterday | 2023 | New Single “Time Out” in advance of the Chicago post-punk band’s sophomore LP Freak Frequency; available (in full) on May 26 [ie. a couple of hours after this show!] "“Time Out” follows the thesis of [last year's EP] 'Content That Makes You Feel Good' to a T, taking direct and vivid aim at the addictive nature of social media. Ruminating on how our brains get swept up in the instant gratification of online interactions and validations, Stuck bring a cinematic, horror glean to the songwriting. “Somebody’s following me! / And the worst part of it all / Somebody profits off my scrawl / My fifteen seconds of shame / I think I need a / Time out!” Obis shouts. “This song is about the compulsion to post, share, like and subscribe. It highlights how social media inherently preys on our deepest insecurities and most negative emotions for profit. I thought I knew how far I could push [drummer] Tim [Green]’s tempos, but Tim kept insisting we do it 20 bpm faster when we were working on this one. He is an absolute monster for playing that fast,” Obis explains." Stuck (Bandcamp) | * | 0:27:54 (Pop-up) |
Snapped Ankles | Some Come | Blurtations | Leaf Label | 2023 | EP of cover versions of songs by the band Blurt, performed by the mysterious Snapped Ankles, who never fail to deliver. Words Ted Milton. Music Milton/Creese/Milton. //// "Performed on logs synth & drums in single takes by Snapped Ankles: Drums - JB Long / Bass & synth - JD Parry / SH09, tone generator & logsynth - MH Chestnutt / Logsplitter, bells & miltones - PJ Austin. --> At this point you, as I, might be wondering... "Logsynth?"... From a Quietus interview posted on the band's website: "Basically you can get these vintage analogue percussion synths fairly cheap. You just buy the circuits for them and put them together. They're quite robust little boxes - single oscillators - so we just strap them to logs. At its most simple … hit log, make noise. Put big log through dirty pedals, make big noise. We're doing a log workshop at Supersonic festival, so I've been making a lot more of them. Adding to the log family so we can have up to about 10 people in a circle hitting logs, like African bell ringing. It'll all be like a human sequencer... ...I think it's just that, say, now that my nephew can make orchestral techno on his iPhone or whatever and a guitar isn't a "dangerous" instrument anymore we were just trying to explore how we can make our own sounds and what could be our weapons to make things more interesting." Bile Sister | Generation Steam | Living on the Edge | We Are Time Records | 2023 | New track, released this week in advance of a new full-length album. "As Bile Sister, Toronto-based producer, sound designer, composer, audio engineer, 3D animator, and multi-dimensional artist Julie Reich is a concept in human form. Bile Sister’s boundary-averse and often tormented sounds are the result of nature and pollution colliding, existing just on the cusp of communication and connection, yet always pushing to break through. New album Living on the Edge is Reich’s sharpest realization of Bile Sister’s dichotomous world yet, conjoining intense avant garde risk-taking with an unflinching directness that makes even the album’s most caustic stretches somehow accessible and impossible to ignore. //// Living on the Edge comes after more than a decade of experimenting within the intersections of noise, electronic music creation, and new ideas about the shapes songs can assume. Along with an extensive discography of solo material as Bile Sister, Reich has collaborated extensively with other like-minded artists, singing in microtonal rock duo Body Breaks, and performing internationally as a member of post-punk legend Chandra’s touring band while also playing a pivotal role in the reissue of Chandra’s 1980 album Transportation. In addition to a dual career in social work and sound design, Reich has spent the better part of her life as an active and vital part of the D.I.Y. arts community. She invites a host of friends from these communities to help with the dismantling and rebuilding throughout the album. After writing, arranging, recording and producing the songs, Reich worked with Josh Korody at Candle Studios on the final production and mixes, incorporating guest appearances into the finished tracks from longtime peers and collaborators. While Bile Sister presides over the chaos and the illumination, she’s joined by Pantayo’s Kat and Katrin Estacio (who contribute gong performances on multiple songs), saxophonist Neil Rankin, bandmates Heloise Simone George, Min Y Lee, and Chandra Oppenheim (Chandra stepping into the booth for guest vocals on “New Life”), guitarists Nicholas Kerr and Ewan Kay, and installation/performance artist Kristina Guison, who plays her metal sculpture on “Leiko.”" Bile Sister (Bandcamp) | * | 0:34:43 (Pop-up) |

Yes, the name of the artist is Album, and their debut album is called "Album"... "Album is the experimental glitch-groove duo of Olivier Fairfield and Simon Provencher, two tirelessly creative musicians working in the small but fertile community of Hull, Québec. Fairfield keeps busy as a drummer and producer with acts such as Last Ex and FET.NAT, whose 2019 album Le Mal was shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. Provencher has earned his own reputation as the guitarist of frenzied post-punk group Victime, bolstering their songs with an array of alien sounds and bizarrely shaped instruments. Though the pair’s various bands have shared stages throughout the past five years, Album’s fractured beatscapes are the fruits of their first proper collaboration. //// Fairfield and Provencher began working on the music that would become Album’s debut album with a series of freeform jams in late 2019. The guitarist added fretless bass and heavily processed vocals to these improvisations, as the drummer integrated vintage sci-fi sounds with a DX7 synthesizer. The most exciting moments of these sessions were then used as the basis for sampling as they sliced and diced passages back together into an eerily futuristic electroacoustic patchwork. //// “It’s hard to tell what’s computer music and what’s actually played,” says Fairfield. ”There were some elements left to chance and instances where we would throw ourselves in blind, then choose to use it. Instead of saying ‘ehhh, let’s not work with this’ our instinct was to say ‘this makes absolutely no sense, but let’s make it work.’ By keeping our foundation simple, the hybrid sound of what was played and what was created electronically started to mesh together.”" Album (Bandcamp) |

"The duo decided upon their band name after including it on an early draft of the cover art with ‘Album’ written as a placeholder. Song titles like “Google rap hommage” or “New and annoying” are meant to be equally bewildering, while others provide subtle hints at the sounds included within. “108 Mystical edit 2k20” drifts through sections of abstracted g-funk and trip-hop with incantory effects-drenched vocals, before “108 Percussion hits (au moins)” settles into a rare air of propulsive tranquility. “When I hear that song I feel like I walk into a room that’s somewhat normal and can hang out there for a while,” Fairfield laughs." //// Released July 9, 2021 //// Written, recorded and mixed by OF and SP in Hull, Québec //// September 2019 - November 2020 //// Mastered by Philip Shaw Bova //// Visuals by Samuel Gougoux //// Videos by Katerine Dennie-Marcoux //// Merci à Chloé Berlanga, Charlotte Savoie, Simon Labelle, Samuel Gougoux, Katerine Dennie-Marcoux et Guillaume Fairfield" Album (Bandcamp) |

"While countless musicians are now forced to collaborate remotely, the pair developed an instrumental chemistry that can only occur by playing together in the same room. By recording their initial sessions like a jazz album with only a few microphones, they were able to capture an air-tight instrumental bedrock that rewards close listening. “That kind of sound is hard to manufacture,” concludes Fairfield. “If we recorded guitars with amps and drums in a huge room it would be hard to distill it into what it is now. Our approach was very dry, soft playing. Everything is in the details as opposed to the girth" "Released July 9, 2021 //// Written, recorded and mixed by OF and SP in Hull, Québec //// September 2019 - November 2020 //// Tags experimental olivier fairfield simon provencher telephone explosion broken beat electronic idm jazz Gatineau" Album (Bandcamp) |

Technology + Teamwork | We Used To Be Friends | We Used To Be Friends | Good Way Records | 2023 | Curious electronic duo Technology + Teamwork are multi-talented virtuosos Anthony Silvester and Sarah Jones. Their friendship has clocked nearly two decades, during which they have lived lives far beyond the kitsch decadence of the 2000s scenes in which they met; they’re now making unconventional and intelligent electronic music solely for the joy of doing so. “The inherent political nature of electronic music really appealed to me,” says Anthony. “I was always a fan of ’60s San Francisco counterculture movements, then realising electronic music came out of it and all these amazing female artists that were from that time, living lives which were so hard. There’s so much heart and rich history, [more so] than this didactic idea of a guitar somehow being something which was real or sincere. People that made these electronic instruments originally were imagining future utopias, where people didn’t have to be wealthy, didn’t have to go to music college, and they didn’t have to know music theory. Anyone could make sound.” “I want people to feel joy,” Sarah says, “and realise that people are still out there making music, for the real reason that music is supposed to be made.” | 1:06:38 (Pop-up)

Bart | Turncoat | Some Kind Of Way | Idée Fixe Records | 2023 | ""Some Kind Of Way" is beloved Toronto band Bart’s third full length release and follow-up to their critically acclaimed sophomore album "Today, Tomorrow, & The Next Day". Seeking to abandon the protracted and meticulous creative process of previous albums, chief architects Christopher Shannon and Nathan Vanderwielen assembled a core group of players to form a new iteration of Bart by inviting multi-instrumentalists Harrison Forman (Hieronymus Harry, Dr. Joy), Patrick Lefler (ROY, Possum) and drummer Michael Brushey to help capture the record’s spontaneous ensemble performances. This core was then augmented by a cadre of collaborators both old and new drawn from Toronto’s deep musical well. Familiar voices return including Joseph Shabason (Tenor Sax), Jason Bhattacharya (percussion) along with newcomers to the Bart universe Carl Didur (piano/synth), Patrick Smith (soprano sax, flute), Ewen Farncombe (Trumpet), Eliza Niemi (cello) and Rachel Cardiello (viola). Together they combine to create Bart’s most eclectic and immediate album to date. //// The album charges out of the gate in classic fashion with two of the LP’s singles back to back, "When Will I Find It?" (a retro acoustic pop nugget reminiscent of the band’s recent spate of standalone singles) and "Turncoat" (a scathing post-punk condemnation of an imposter) which combine to clock in at a mere 3:50." Imperial Wax | Turncoat | Gastwerk Saboteurs | Saustex Records | 2019 | "Imperial Wax are a British alternative rock band, formed in 2018. Guitarist Pete Greenway, bassist Dave Spurr and drummer Keiron Melling previously played together in the final line-up of the long-established post-punk group The Fall. After the death of the Fall's vocalist and band-leader Mark E. Smith, the trio recruited vocalist and guitarist Sam Curran to form Imperial Wax. The band describe themselves as, "noise rock & garage brawlers unafraid of a psych workout or a rockabilly dust-up." //// Greenway, Spurr and Melling had been the instrumental core of the Fall's line-up for over a decade when Mark E. Smith died in January 2018. After Smith's death, the trio played their first live gig as the backing band to former Can vocalist Damo Suzuki in Salford in May of the same year. They were then joined by Curran, formerly of Leeds-based punk band Black Pudding, naming themselves after the first Fall album that they had worked on together, 2008's Imperial Wax Solvent. They played their first show as a four-piece at The Troubadour, London, in February 2019. //// The band's debut album, Gastwerk Saboteurs was recorded with Andy Pearce, the former in-house producer at Real World Studios, and released in May 2019 on the Texas-based label Saustex Records." The Two Koreas | Cloth Coat Revolution | Altruists | Unfamiliar Records | 2006 | "Toronto's the Two Koreas play urgent, brittle-sounding indie rock that's earned them frequent comparisons to the Fall, though the bandmembers have their own tongue-in-cheek description of their sound: "glacial garage," which of course would be "garage rock encased in ice, perfectly preserved in its most primal state for future generations of children to study." If clever banter comes easy to the Two Koreas, there's a good reason: vocalist Stuart Berman, guitarist Kieran Grant, and keyboard man Jason Anderson all write about music and film for a variety of Canadian publications, though bassist Ian Worang and drummer David Gee are otherwise employed in other fields. The Two Koreas formed in 2004, and became a frequent presence on Toronto's underground scene by the time they cut their first album, 2005's Main Plates and Classic Pies. The band returned in 2007 with its second album, Altruists..." The Two Koreas (Bandcamp) | 1:29:08 (Pop-up)

This song AKA "Turncoat (Tribute to Unus Annus)"... "Unus Annus was a YouTube channel created by CrankGameplays and Markiplier. The two did a variety of activities on the channel, uploading one episode per day, while steering clear of normal gaming videos they are known for. Ethan represented the "Unus" persona, while Mark represented the "Annus" persona. //// The channel was created on November 15, 2019 as a way of giving their viewers a once in a lifetime experience, free of, what they considered as, restrictive guidelines, with the end-goal being to remove all of its content off of YouTube after a one year run without any intent of preserving it, as well as discontinuing Unus Annus' merchandise, hence the channel's name, which translates to "one year" in Latin. This method aligned with Mark's idea of not everything being immortalized on the internet and that the most treasured experiences lie within those unique, fleeting moments, tying into Unus Annus' symbolic imagery of frailty and death, and their commonly used term "memento mori" (Latin expression for "remember that you have to die"). //// Mark also stated that he would be issuing copyright takedowns to any re-uploads of his deleted content without his permission. On November 13, 2020, after a twelve-hour livestream, Mark and Ethan deleted all of Unus Annus' social accounts and finished off the broadcast by terminating the channel. A day after the channel was deleted, Mark and Ethan created post-mortem videos where they talked about their thoughts and feelings on the project. //// Now that the channel has been deleted, none of the channel's content will be re-uploaded on their own channels and all of its associated merchandise will no longer be available for purchase. Hence, they suggested their viewers to create memories in their own unique experiences. Many have since suspected that the channel's true purpose seems to have been an experiment in how far YouTube's Community Guidelines could be pushed. //// There are many archives online, due to the fact that they publicly stated that they had always planned to delete the channel. Some believe that archived videos on YouTube will be targeted with copyright takedown requests. Mark has stated that edited clips of Unus Annus' videos would be allowed, however full unedited archives would get taken down. The channel had 4.58 million subscribers and 867 million views before the channel was officially deleted." |
