The Fall | A Disco (City) | O-Mit | Cherry Red Records | 2023 | AKA"Afternoon Disco" on bootlegs. Released May 12. Words from Paul Clarke: "The latest in a series of Cherry Red’s 10” EPs celebrating their 45th anniversary is a real treat for fans of The Fall some five years after Mark E. Smith’s passing. The four tracks on this EP are previously unheard outtakes from The Fall’s 2013 Re-Mit record on Cherry Red, so towards the end of their never less than interesting career. Or more specifically examples of Smith’s singular vision as he once famously noted: “If it’s me and yer granny on bongos, it’s The Fall.” Membership of this band was on something of a revolving door basis as Smith fell out with over 50 bandmates, sacked them for no apparent reason and even fought musicians onstage, but it should be noted he always recruited people who could play, and would buy into his very particular way of working which is evident here.... Smith... has a more soulful side which you can hear on A Disco (City), that actually has a semi-disco interlude in it. It’s not exactly Niles Rodgers, but it does groove along with some tight bass from David Spurr as lyrically Smith seems to be wandering round a rough town coming across ‘bald headed idiots’ along the way.... As always with Cherry Red this EP is beautifully packaged on vivid red vinyl with an alternative Re-Mit cover as Smith fittingly sprawls on an armchair surrounded by his band. If you’re a Fall fan then this is gold dust, and for those of us who can take or leave Mark E. Smith it’s an fascinating insight into the working methods of a marmite artist who never wavered from what would achieve his unique artistic sensibility." | * | 0:03:29 (Pop-up) |
HOUSE Of ALL | Ayenbite | HOUSE Of ALL | Tiny Global Productions | 2023 | Released April 22, 2023. "House of All features founding Fall guitarist Martin Bramah (guitar and vocals), bassist Stephen Hanley (whose 20 years in the Fall between 1978 and 1998 make him that band’s longest-serving member after Smith), and his drummer brother Paul. Simon Wolstencroft, from the band’s 80s/90s incarnation, completes a two-drummer lineup, along with guitarist Pete Greenway, who spent a decade in the Fall." [The last decade of the band's existence.] //// "Opener Aynebite is phenomenal with the two drummers and reverb/delay creating an almost dub-like sound with funky Happy Mondays type guitar and the vaguest echo of the Fall’s ‘Smile’. //// You also get to ‘Increase your Word-Power with Martin Bramah’: Ayenbite means remorse and comes from the 13th Century and Darksome means dark, dismal and is derived from 15th Century texts. Bramah unpretentiously mocks himself in the lyrics: “He speaks Latin like a pirate”." //// The upcoming June 2023 issue of "The Wire" magazine will have a fair chunk of it devoted to Mark E Smith, The Fall & Fall related things, including an interview with HOUSE Of ALL: "House Of All: Tessa Norton talks to the new band formed by ex-Fall members about life after Mark E Smith." The Wire Issue 472 //// Additionally, they are playing their first tour in mid-May, with dates in London (May 18), Salford (May 19), Newcastle Upon Tyne (May 22) and Edinburgh (May 23.) //// Regrettably, the tour will not feature Pete Greenway, who made a difficult decision to step away to tend to his health, but "they’re rehearsing with fill-in guitarist Phil Lewis, and by all accounts it sounds . . . stupendous." Lastly, "HOUSE Of ALL have finished their (fantastic) second album, which is replete with Pete’s unique brilliance." HOUSE Of ALL (Bandcamp) | * | 0:06:28 (Pop-up) |
The Passage | Dark Times | BBC Sessions | LTM Recordings | 1980 / 2003 | "The first session [for John Peel], from November 1980, features vocalist Lizzy Johnson, and catches the band in a state of transition." Elizabeth Johnson - Vocals / Joe McKechnie - Drums / Andrew Wilson - Guitar / Dick Witts - Keys //// Produced by Dale Griffin /// "Manchester postpunk band fronted by Dick Witts, active between 1978 and 1983. The Passage were formed in March 1978 by Richard 'Dick' Witts together with Tony Friel and Lorraine Hilton. For Witts and Friel the band was extra-curricular, with Friel still playing bass in The Fall, and Witts juggling a post as music and dance officer for Merseyside Arts Association with a stint co-presenting What's On for Granada TV. Prior to this, Witts had trained as a classical percussionist and briefly played with the prestigious Hallé Orchestra; he was also a founder member of the Manchester Musicians' Collective." https://thepassage.co.uk/ | 0:11:07 (Pop-up)
Pere Ubu | Crocodile Smile | Trouble On Big Beat Street | Cherry Red Records | 2023 | "Pere Ubu's 19th album, Trouble On Big Beat Street, is out [in a] week, and they've just shared a new song from it, "Crocodile Smile," which honks and skronks in true Ubu style. Here's bandleader David Thomas giving his unique take on the discordant track: “I cross the Mississippi on US49, heading east. In Clarksdale, US49 intersects Highway 61 and that is the Crossroads of blues legend. Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the Devil. Pablo Picasso never sold his soul to the Devil but a black guy from the Delta ... I guess that's gotta be the explanation. Anyway, on one corner is a laundromat, the Devil May Care Quickie-Mat. In the window is a sign. 'Lay It Down And Suds It Up!' Across the road is a Popeyes Fried Chicken. I go in the drive-thru lane and stop at the menu board. A voice from the speaker says, "How-how-how may I serve you?" I order a 3-piece chicken dinner with hush puppies and a Sprite. "How-how-how do you want that chicken?" "Extra crispy," I say, and proceed to the pickup window. Howlin' Wolf leans out with a neatly folded bag dwarfed in his fist. Driving off I remember the pecan pie slice I wanted to order. I park and go inside. Robert Zimmerman and Alan Lomax wait behind the counter. Muddy Waters, wearing the manager's badge, is bussing tables. A song is playing on the jukebox…” Pere Ubu will play Trouble on Beat Street in full at two shows in June with a band that includes MC5's Wayne Kramer, keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman (who played in the band in late-'80s and early-'90s), along with current bandmembers Michele Temple and Jack Jones, plus special guests Allen Ravenstine (synth) [NYC show] and Tony Maimone (bass) [NYC show]. [and Mayo Thompson / L.A. show] Those shows are at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on June 19, which is with Faust; and L.A.'s The Lodge Room on June 22, which is with Mike Watt & The Missingmen." | * | 0:14:51 (Pop-up) |

The Fall | Hitmen (Dream) | O-Mit | Cherry Red Records | 2023 | Tracks here are previously unheard out-takes from sessions that spawned 2013’s Re-Mit album. The opening track is another take of ‘Hittite Man’. An album that delivered differing opinions in some reports, although The Fall always were something of a Marmite band, you either loved them or were just bemused. This first track is ‘Hitmen (Dream)’ and is the closest sign you’re going to get when looking at track names on this set of tunes, so it’s probably best to sit back and enjoy. Mark barks his poetry, seemingly with little sign of where this came from, or where it’s going. | * | 0:30:42 (Pop-up) |
Lorelle Meets The Obsolete | Fosas Limitado | Re-Facto | Sonic Cathedral | 2020 | Lorelle Meets The Obsolete is a psychedelic rock band from Guadalajara, Mexico. The group was formed in 2006 by Lorena Quintanilla (vocals, guitar) and Alberto González (guitar, bass, synth). They are known for their unique blend of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, and krautrock influences. Their music is characterized by dreamy, hazy atmospheres, hypnotic guitar riffs, and Quintanilla's ethereal vocals. They often incorporate elements of noise and improvisation into their compositions, creating a rich and immersive sonic experience.... | 0:33:54 (Pop-up)
Sweeping Promises | Eraser | Eraser Single | Feel It Records | 2023 | Lead single and opening track “Eraser” leans into Lira Mondal’s knack for blurring the line between pop hooks and punk rallying cries. Its brittle-yet-formidable backing track brings together a whole arsenal of musical weapons, from crunching power chords to surreal synth melodies to a relentless rhythm section that keeps the track pulsing along. Mondal and bandmate Caufield Schnug say the eraser of the title is “a malevolent creep – an overly ambitious, shadowy force who bears an uncanny resemblance to you. She watches your every move, mirrors your motions, and ultimately uses your voice against you without you ever noticing what she’s done. She’s unchecked ambition, a paranoid girl Friday, an overriding impulse to reflect rather than project. She must be stopped at all costs.” Their sophomore record "Good Living Is Coming For You" will be out this summer! | * | 0:37:35 (Pop-up) |
Modern Woman | Achtung | Achtung Single | End Of The Road Records | 2023 | Modern Woman features frontperson and guitarist Sophie Harris, as well as Juan Brint-Gutierrez (on bass), David Denyer (on percussion, violin, synth, and samples), and Adam Blackhurst (on drums). Harris had this to say about the song in a press release: “When I was in school I used to live round the corner from a friend who I had a real crush on. His parents were German, and his dad scared me. If we were in his room and had the window open, we could hear his neighbor playing hymns on the piano. His dad also used to come in and shout at us if we were doing things we weren’t supposed to, which was often. “The song is made up of snapshots of images of going round to that house as there were a lot of emotions flying round. It definitely reminds me of a more innocent time.” | 0:40:18 (Pop-up)
Iguana Death Cult | Sensory Overload | Echo Palace | Innovative Leisure | 2023 | ‘Echo Palace’ may be the Iguana Death Cult music that’s most overtly about the strange cause and effect of groupthink, but the theme has been lurking there since the very beginning, when the band was first formed by childhood friends Jeroen Reek and Tobias Opschoor over ten years ago. The name of Iguana Death Cult is a partial nod to Reek’s fascination with cults in general — and the “Iguana” part is a nod to Iggy Pop, whose first band was the Iguanas. | 0:43:16 (Pop-up)
Pinch Points | Pave Me | Pave Me Single | Pinch Points | 2023 | Melbourne's Pinch Points draw influence from punk, garage rock, and post-punk, and deliver a high-energy blend of driving rhythms, distorted guitars, and raw vocals. Their music is characterized by a sense of urgency and intensity, with themes that touch on social commentary, personal experiences, and observations of everyday life. Pave Me” appeared as a bonus track on their reissue of their 2018 debut EP Mechanical Injury which is out digitally now and will be available physically on June 7. | 0:45:22 (Pop-up)
Heavy Lungs | Dancing Man | Dancing Man Single | Alcopop! | 2023 | Formed in the early days of summer 2017, Bristol punk/noise rock band Heavy Lungs can’t help but feel like a product of their environment. “Living here, it's hard not to see the scars the city can leave. Like burning your bare leg skin on the exhaust of a motorbike -inconvenient and painful, but not without its equal share of humour and self reflection" | * | 0:47:52 (Pop-up) |

The Intelligence | Block Of Ice | Deuteronomy | In The Red | 2007 | Lars “Fingers” Finberg of The Intelligence also played as second drummer of Thee Oh Sees for a time. This is an Osees song. It generally averages between 2 and 25 minutes, given the day and or night it was recorded or played. "The Intelligence is an American rock band from Seattle, formed in 1999. Founded by multi-instrumentalist Lars Finberg (A Frames, Thee Oh Sees), the band currently consists of Finberg, alongside Dave Hernandez (guitar), Drew Church (bass) and Kaanan Tupper (drums). To date, the band has released nine studio albums, two EPs and a number of singles, the latter often split with other artists." | 1:03:52 (Pop-up)
Thee Oh Sees | Block of Ice (Live) | Live At Levitation | Levitation | 2023 / 2012 | This song, played in various incarnations at various lengths by Thee Oh Sees, Osees, OCS etc. I threatened to play as many versions in the winter as I could find, but only made good on that threat a few times. Now there is a new/old version, from 2012, released May 19th... Here are some words about it, courtesy "It's Psychedlic Baby Magazine"... "Back in 2012, Thee Oh Sees made their first appearance at Austin Psych Fest, performing an electrified set at Emo’s East. The first of the band’s many Levitation appearances down in Austin, this show has been revisited for a new series of vinyl releases, ‘Live at Levitation,’ immortalizing it on glorious 12″ colored wax, mixed by John Dwyer and mastered for vinyl by JJ Golden. Speaking on the appearance commemorated with this physical release, Dwyer wrote: “I think this was our first time at Levitation but our millionth time in the amazing and tough as nails city of Austin, Texas. Brigid Dawson, Mike Shoun, Petey D and myself had already laid the live show out in front of crowds here, so it wasn’t our first rodeo and certainly not my last. Our love is obvious here as we bring forth a short but sweet set of hits and deep cuts. This is also the version of the band with Lars “Fingers” Finberg of Intelligence fame as second banana drummer. So enjoy some primal and sensual double drumming and as a side note, no one died at this show. Thanks as always to Levitation for making shit happen.” The first Austin Psych Fest was held in March 2008, and expanded to a 3 day event the following year. The event quickly developed into an international destination for psychedelic rock fans, with lineups spanning the fringes of indie rock, from up-and-comers to vintage legends, and capped off with headline performances from co-founders The Black Angels, along with Tame Impala, The Flaming Lips, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Thee Oh Sees (in various forms), and many more. Levitation helped spark a movement, inspiring the creation of similar events across the globe and a burgeoning psych scene that would soon ignite. The series captures key moments in psychedelic rock history, and live music in Austin, Texas, pressed on beautiful limited edition colorful vinyl pressings – each an eye popping visual representation of the music contained within." Here's the excellent full clip of their performance of this song: THEE OH SEES - BLOCK OF ICE - LIVE AT LEVITATION (2012) - Official Live Video | * | 1:06:03 (Pop-up) |
Meat Puppets | Plateau | II | SST | 1984 | "The Meat Puppets are an American rock band formed in January 1980, in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The group's classic lineup was Curt Kirkwood (guitar/vocals), his brother Cris Kirkwood (bass guitar), and Derrick Bostrom (drums). One of the more notable groups on the roster of SST Records (who released most of their early albums), the Meat Puppets could be broadly classified as punk rock, but like most of their SST peers, the Meat Puppets established their own unique style, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock, and featuring Curt's warbling vocals." | 1:19:18 (Pop-up)

"The Brian Jonestown Massacre follow up 2015's small-scale Mini Album Thingy Wingy with the full-length Third World Pyramid, a somewhat meandering nine-track set that feels like an extension of their latter-day psych-shoegaze mixture. While bandleader Anton Newcombe has always maintained a healthy output, he's been especially prolific in the years leading up to this LP, soundtracking films both real (2016's Moon Dogs) and imaginary (2015's Musique de Film Imaginé), while adding numerous BJM releases to the band's already stout catalog. Written and recorded at Newcombe's Cobra Studio in Berlin, the songs on Third World Pyramid cascade out in a textural multitude of jangling guitars, horns, and voices." - This song is one of the more laid back instrumentals. |

POZI | What You Came For | What You Came For EP | PRAH Recordings | 2023 | Pozi’s musical style is as enigmatic as the trio itself, consisting of Rosa Brook, Toby Burroughs, and Tom Jones. Their sound sets them apart from the city’s angrier contemporaries and draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists such as British funk group Cymande, Czech experimental violinist and vocalist Iva Bittová, and post-pop peers Mermaid Chunky and Uh. ‘What You Came For’ is a track with acres of headroom gradually filled by queasy pizzicato and sweeping strings. By the time the deep bass line kicks in, the song feels more closed in, like an eerie flotation tank. Then Island Girl joins in the periphery, playing the spoons. Yes, those are spoons. | 1:31:32 (Pop-up)
The KVB | Pictures Of Matchstick Men | Artefacts (Reimaginings From The Original Psychedelic Era) | Cleopatra Records | 2023 | The KVB's sound has been described as a combination of electronic, psychedelic, post-punk and shoegaze. Artefacts (Reimaginings From The Original Psychedelic Era), as the title suggests, features 11 tracks of unique interpretations from the groundbreaking and influential psychedelic rock explosion of the 1960s. Filmed in the gorgeous rolling hills of the English countryside, the accompanying music video captures the candid, meditative nature of The KVB’s musical alchemy, crafted by Nicholas Wood and Kat Day. Whether focusing on natural objects like the exposed bedrock of the otherwise verdant country landscape, or turning the camera (literally) on themselves, The KVB showcase the cosmic depth of the seemingly mundane material world. | * | 1:34:39 (Pop-up) |
Les Pommes De Lune | La Chimere | Premiere Transmission EP | Hypnotic Bridge Records | 2022 | ‘Les Chimeres’ is ‘Pictures Of Matchstick Men’, which was a huge hit for Status Quo in early 1968. In the hands of Montreal's Les Pommes de Lune, the psychedelic pop classic is transformed into a heavyweight fashion based along the lines of Vanilla Fudge. Crashing chords, thudding percussion and mesmerizing patterns form one heck of a brain-rattling beauty. | 1:39:03 (Pop-up)
Pearl & The Oysters feat. Laetitia Sadier | Read The Room | Coast 2 Coast | Stones Throw | 2023 | After winning a free trip to the ★Ostreoid Asteroid Resort★ (from whence came their name) on the back of a dehydrated cereal box, a joyous society of galactic gleaners began making music together under the Neptunian moniker: 𝒫ℯ𝒶𝓇𝓁 𝒜𝓃𝒹 𝒯𝒽ℯ 𝒪𝓎𝓈𝓉ℯ𝓇𝓈. ✩ ☾ ❈ ❖✢❖ A pearl is a reaction to an irritant within a mollusk. Pearls are formed when the mollusk secretes thousands of very thin concentric layers of nacre, a secretion of calcium carbonate (aragonite and conchyolin) in a matrix that eventually coats an irritant, either man made or natural. The thin circumferential lamellae of nacre intersect the external surface of the pearl to create a 'thumbprint pattern' that characterises the surface of nacre. | 1:43:53 (Pop-up)

Rose Love says of the new song: “Parallel started out as lyrics written years ago at the beginning of a relationship that started intensely and ended badly, leaving emotional carnage in its wake. It’s about loving someone and wanting to help them but ignoring your gut instinct.” | * | 1:46:03 (Pop-up) |

The human beings behind this shadowy and strange, buoyantly cartoon-narcotic sound were drummer and bassist Wayne Fullwood and the everything-elser Miles Newbold, owner of the Nottingham recording studio The Chicken Shack. Explaining the genesis of The Natural Yogurt Band's sound, Newbold cited a love of French and Italian library music. Like his forebears in the musical factories of yore, Newbold told an interviewer: "I don't hang on to the music I have done, I like to move onto the next thing." Look back to move forward. |

L'Eclair & The Mauskovic Dance Band | Homo Sapiens | Homo Sapiens / Take the Money (Octopus Version) | Bongo Joe | 2019 | The Eclair-Mauskovic story began in late 2016 when both bands shared a stage for the first time during the Face Z Festival in Geneva. Since then, the two bands have spent their time touring and crafting their own visions of crunchy space future dance music. It seemed logical to join forces in order to produce a collaborative split 7 inch that would blend both bands’ identities. “Homo Sapiens” is a slick latin L’Eclair groove augmented by mighty Mauskovic timbales and otherworldly vocal oddities. | 1:55:18 (Pop-up) |
