I love Edward Woodward, so I say this with all due respect, but reportedly when Laurence Olivier first saw his name in print, he said "Edward Woodward? Sounds like a fart in a bathtub." Which is kinda true when you say it.

It's good. It's on Shudder now...

Another great film with EW is Breaker Morant, arguably his defining role. Amazing military courtroom drama set during the Boer War, based on a true story.

Hello Devon. Wicker Man, spooky! Those Celt pagans.

Excellent film! My dad took me to see this film back in the early/mid 70’s. I was the same age as the missing girl & just remember loving the end!!! Wasn’t sure I was supposed to live this film, but I did. I have it on DVD & watch it every time they show it on Shudder or whatever horror channel plays it.

My first boyfriend had a clip of this as his answering machine message, so I've got bits of Wickerman dialogue burned into my memory.

Naturally. It's much to dangerous to jump through fire with your clothes on.

Shudder has a folk horror category, I don't know how much of it qualifies, but I watched a good on on there from Malaysia that does over the weekend called Roh

I saw the original Wickerman in the theater way back when. Years later a client loved the movie so much he had me crate a poster for a festival. I got way up in it. Lucky I didn’t get burned up

The Final Cut is being released in 4K video on June 21 in the UK. This is still only the 92 minute version. Apparently the 102 minute version(never seen) released on VHS in the 80s explains something that makes sense for the ending - that the policeman is a virgin.

Hi Devon and Islanders, I have this soundtrack and listen to it often. "Willow's Song" is my favorite track. It's just lushly, and lustfully, gorgeous.

This has been a fascinating trip into a single film tonight (I wish I hadn’t been multitasking through the middle). I’ve enjoyed past shows that were tributes to individual composers, but this is also an excellent approach for MORRICONE to explore.

I saw The Wicker Man at a BAM special screening in early 2005. The ending really freaked me out. I have never forgotten it, the long ending shot of the setting sun.

How could you not get excited about Britt Ekland banging on your wall naked and singing? This movie still holds interest 50 years later! Christopher Lee stated it was his favorite movie...which is quite a compliment considering the amount of films he was in.

True enough, but remember that he likely considered more of them awful than most of us would. I don't think he liked being in any of the Hammer Dracula films after the first, apart of course for the money. (His stepfather, or was it his father, or both, lost whatever money the family had gambling.)

I saw the original in the 90's. I don't recall much. Maybe a revisit is in the future.

If you believed that lust were a sin that could send you to Hell forever, and (worse!) saddened your loving Father and His Son, you'd have mixed feelings about it. It's not my belief, nor as common as it used to be, but it's important to remember how different people can be to each other….
  8:59pm
Rick A:

The Woodward character's Christian beliefs are key to the film's themes, including his resistance to Willow.

Thanks, Devon! Wicker Man is a movie i didn't take to when it first came out. But I have to admit, tonight's show has made me all the more curious to explore the franchise and the historic events that inspired it.

Some truth there...even though he is one of my favorite "Draculas" . I'm sure he enjoyed the themes and dialogue of The Wicker Man...a questioning of high morality and puritanism.

I'm less inclined than some I've recently seen to see it as questioning Woodward. He is there to investigate a possible murder, and at least one other person, the sea-plane pilot, is murdered in cold blood by the islanders. I think the picture is firmly behind Woodward…and I think, from Lee's expression, that we are to believe that Lord Summerisle knows that the ritual will not work.
