Handle | Mhmm | In Threes | Upset The Rhythm | 2020 | Debut album from Handle - 'Incorporating a diverse range of influences, from samba to no wave, this three-piece (now based between Manchester/London/Brussels) make a uniquely minimal sound, buoyed by poetic, urgent vocals. Each instrument brings its own voice, yet somehow the result is a brilliantly unified and understated sonic experience that demands your attention. A group that mesh politics and the avant-garde in with tribal percussion, and urgent, agitated vocals, their songs – all of which clock in around the two minute mark – owe as much to performance poetry as they do to post-punk. | 0:07:59 (Pop-up)
Dinosaur L | #2 (No, Thank You) | 24-24 Music | Sleeping Bag Records | 1981 | 24→24 Music is a 1981 album by Dinosaur L, the disco project of American musician Arthur Russell. Enlisting a variety of musicians, Russell recorded the album in 1979 primarily at Blank Tapes studio in New York. The album is an improvised composition grounded in disco but characterized by rhythmic shifts every 24 bars, with Russell running the recordings through two 24-track tape recorders set up by producer Bob Blank.Russell's "most delightful" work, and described it as exploring "the blurry hinterlands where disco, downtown avant improv, new music, and funk meet no wave playfulness." Melody Maker called it "a fluid, constantly shifting piece of music that’s intensely danceable and spacially disorientating at the same time." | 0:09:48 (Pop-up)
ISMATIC GURU | I Didn't Like It | Ismatic Guru II | John Toohill | 2022 | The return of the Ismatic Guru. Part II of an ongoing recording project between John Toohill (Swimming Faith Records / Science Man) and Brandon Schlia (Steak and Cake Records / Clump). Snarky, goblin-Elvis vocals overtop punchy, speed warped, danceable new wave/post-punk. Short, catchy songs littered with slice of life, wiry sarcasm about shunning self-improvement, going to the dentist, a hippie killing hitchhiker, existential nervous breakdowns, and an annoying bug. Faster. More freaked and free. This release was limited to 100 cassettes. Get yours today! | 0:11:11 (Pop-up)
Cristina | What's a Girl To Do? | Sleep It Off | Mercury | 1984 | Sleep It Off was produced by Don Was. The songs were written by Cristina (all lyrics, except for the covers) collaborating with Was and her backing musicians, Barry Reynolds and Ben Brierley (from Marianne Faithfull's band), and Doug Fieger (from The Knack). The music is beat-laden, sophisticated synth-pop, setting Was's detailed production against Cristina's expressive but sometimes less-than-perfect, cynical No Wave vocal style. At times the music is reminiscent of Blondie, or Madonna, and it does not forget the decadent disco of Cristina's eponymous debut. It was reviewed as a "grimly hilarious gavotte through the upscale decadence of the titled apocalypso" with an effect "somewhere between Marianne Faithfull and the Flying Lizards [but with] music more enjoyable than either". | 0:12:22 (Pop-up)
Garçons | French Boy | French Boy Single | Metronome | 1979 | Originally formed in France in 1975, the band's first single, "Rien à dire", produced by Michel Esteban and, like most of their material, written by Vidal and Fitoussi, was released in December 1977. Esteban played demos of the band to John Cale, who offered to produce the band in New York City. In March 1978, they recorded another single, "Attitudes" / "Re-Bop", in New York; Cale played piano and marimba on the record. The record was released on Esteban's Rebel label in France, and then on Cale's SPY label in the US. The band also played at CBGB, supporting X-Ray Spex, before returning to Paris where they supported Patti Smith and, later in the year, Talking Heads. Later in 1978, "Re-Bop", coupled with the band's version of the Village People's "Macho Man", was issued as a single on ZE Records, the new label formed in New York by Esteban with Michael Zilkha. | 0:15:50 (Pop-up)
Mansfield. TYA | Tempête | Monument Ordinaire | Warrior Records | 2021 | Mansfield.TYA is a duo of musicians Julia Lanoë (voice, guitar, piano) and Carla Pallone (violin, piano, harmonium, voice) from Nantes, France. They met in 2002. The name " Mansfield" comes from June Mansfield wife of the writer Henry Miller and friend of Anaïs Nin (from where also the name of their first album " June"). The duo was seen and noticed for its intimate, beautifully tensed music at the openings of such artists as Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Erik Truffaz, Camille, Elysian Fields, Cocorosie and others. | 0:18:57 (Pop-up)
Special Interest | DISCO II | Spiraling | Anxious Music | 2018 | Special Interest is a four piece punk band emerging from New Orleans, Louisiana. Combining elements of No-Wave, Glam, and Industrial Special Interest create a frenetic and urgent revisioning of punk and electronic music for a modern world gone mad. Propulsive analogue drum machines, a swirling layer of detuned samples, and a driving bass line create the foundation across which angular guitar work and dissonant synth lines glide. Front and center are Alli Logout’s commanding vocals and razor sharp lyrics moving from high camp satire to insightful political imperatives often within the course of one song. | 0:22:07 (Pop-up)

"The Lonely Bull, released in 1962, is the debut album by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. Most of the tracks on the album were geared toward the TJB's Mariachi sound. There were also a few cover versions of popular songs, a trend which would grow in their next two albums, Volume 2 and South of the Border. "Limbo Rock" covered a novelty dance song that had been a calypso-style hit by Chubby Checker. "Struttin' With Maria" was later used as the theme for a TV game show called Personality, hosted by Larry Blyden. The tune "Acapulco 1922" uses the old song "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" (by Seymour Brown and Nat D. Ayer, 1911) as a starting point, with a mariachi spin." |

The Olympians |
Daptone Records |
2016 |
"The self-titled debut from the Olympians is a quintessential Daptone Records release, featuring many of the label’s best musicians as commissioned by the pianist and vibraphonist Toby Pazner. Pazner has played on many Daptone records himself, but he’s also occupied a Daptone-adjacent space as the keyboardist for the soul singer Lee Fields and others. That Aloe Blacc “I Need a Dollar” song you couldn’t escape—or stop listening to—in 2010? It was Pazner who played the signature piano take. As a listener, there’s a certain delight in chasing down session musicians in an album’s credits and threading together their careers. In jazz especially, that type of context is rewarding, knowing that this guy played with that guy and is now leading his own thing with both of them involved. This is the position Pazner is in with the Olympians, commanding a group of regulars that includes members of the Dap-Kings, Lee Fields’ band, and other players like Michael Leonhart, a noted trumpet prodigy who directs Steely Dan’s band and was formerly a house player for the now-defunct label Truth and Soul Records. The Olympians is a Pazner pet project years in the making: piling these instrumentalists on top of each other, boxing them in with smart arrangements, and then letting them out to play." |

A Certain Ratio | 1982 | 1982 | Mute | 2023 | New! (Ignore any confusion that this is a re-release, it definitely is new material, released in full Mar 31, 2023.) Also, this is a carry-over from last week's voice-machine/vocoder theme... [Extra bonus carry-over content!] "Since they emerged from the hallowed grounds of the late 70s punk scene, A Certain Ratio have moved with gleeful disregard for boundaries of style and genre, their eye fixed firmly on constant progression. It’s an ethos that’s open-minded over all else, and that’s seen them take everything from experimental electronica to vintage funk, filtered through their own Mancunian lens. Even by the band’s own standards, however, their latest studio album 1982 is multidimensional. It shoots off in every direction, whether via searing Afrobeat, mind-melting jazz breakdowns or moody electronic experiments. Recorded by the core ACR line up of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson, alongside Tony Quigley, Matthew Steele and Ellen Beth Abdi, soon after their 2021 triptych of EPs and 2020’s ACR Loco, the band’s pleasure at being together in the studio is audible and follows a series of dates that have seen them perform at a huge variety of festivals, including Womad, Wide Awake, Blue Dot, Green Man, Latitude and the Manchester Warehouse Project, in recent years. And the album title? Although 1982 might conjure memories of the year that saw ACR put out both the acclaimed Sextet and the cult favourite I’d Like To See You Again, it’s more of a playful red herring than an invitation to nostalgia. Like all the band’s best ideas it emerged spontaneously in the studio when Martin was ad-libbing into a vocoder. “It’s called ‘1982’ but I wouldn’t say this album sounds anything like ‘Sextet’,” he points out. Adds Donald: “The title is just playful. People can take it whichever way they can.”" | * | 0:55:33 (Pop-up) |

(2006). Remastered and newly mixed from the original tapes by Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers... Available as a limited edition vinyl and CD box set, and digitally on Mute on 3 March 2023." //////// "The Belgian synthpop trio – Marc Moulin (1942- 2008), Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers – launched in Brussels in 1978 and, as one of only a handful of synthpop pioneers at the time, helped bring electronic pop to the mainstream. //// Telex skillfully used cover versions to deliberately play up the disparity between their ice-cool electronic approach and the sweaty, fleshy, frenetic passion of pop, demonstrated here on the opening track for a new EP to launch the box set. Their take of Bill Haley’s ‘Rock Around The Clock’ from the debut album, in which, so to speak, all of the rock is removed leaving nothing but the clock; a ticking, vocoderised, supremely deadpan robot parody of the original saw the band appear on Top of the Pops in 1979. “Buster Keaton was our idol,” explains Moers, and it shows." | 0:38:25 (Pop-up)
Dr Sure's Unusual Practice | Saturday Night | Bubble | Marthouse Records | 2023 | A new direction for Melbourne, Australia's Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice. "Declared a ‘mixtape’, Dr Sure’s BUBBLE consists of 7 tracks recorded in solitude over the course of a 2 week period... leaning into electronic elements more than ever before, with nods to Krautrock, New Wave and Ambient music.//// Those familiar with Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice will remember the 2020 twin EP’s ‘Scomo Goes To Hawaii’ and ‘While Aus Burns’. Musically BUBBLE exists in a similar solo/experimental space - led by synths and drum machines - as opposed to the band-driven post-punk of LP’s ‘The West’ (Marthouse Records, 2019) and ’Remember The Future? Vol. 2 & 1’ (Marthouse/Erste Theke Tontraeger, 2021). //// ...a fitting transition from the observational social commentary of previous releases to the more insular and introspective scope of the BUBBLE project - songs exploring solitude, sorrow and (in)sanity coloured in wry humour. Dr Sure’s BUBBLE... released on cassette on April 14, 2023, via Marthouse Records." Dr Sure's Unusual Practice (Bandcamp) | * | 0:42:08 (Pop-up) |

The Monkees | Can You Dig It | Head (Deluxe Edition) | Rhino Records | 1968 / 1994 | "While the film's music disappointed fans of the band's more traditional pop sound, it features what some critics considered to be some of the Monkees' best-recorded work... The music of the Monkees often featured a rather dark subject matter beneath a superficially bright, uplifting sound. The music of the film takes the darkness and occasional satirical elements of the Monkees' earlier tunes and makes it far more overt, as in "Ditty Diego" or "Daddy's Song", which has Jones singing an upbeat, Broadway-style number about a boy abandoned by his father. In his 2012 essay on the soundtrack album, academic Peter Mills noted that "on this album the songs are only part of the story, as they were with the Monkees project as a whole: Signals, sounds, and ideas interfere with each other throughout."" | 0:52:02 (Pop-up)

"Their 5th album in as many years Aşk (deeper feeling of love), marks an exuberant return to the 70s Anatolian folk-rock sound that characterised Altın Gün’s first two albums. It is a record that radiates the infectious energy found in the Amsterdam-based sextet’s celebrated live performances and next levels the group’s ground breaking sonic palette of Turkish psychedelic groove pop, sci-fi disco and dreamy acid folk." //// "The album begins with “Badi Sabah Olmadan,” which also featured on Âlem as a burbling electronic excursion. But this is a different trip entirely. The opening snare roll cracks tight like a starting pistol, signalling a headlong flight into driving space rock, with Erdinç Ecevit supplying dolorous vocals and gnarled electric saz, and Thijs Elzinga’s razored slide guitar suggesting an Anatolian cousin to Pink Floyd’s psychedelic barn-stormer “One of These Days.”" Altin Gün (Bandcamp) |

"The first thing that grabs you about Altın Gün’s new album is the energy. With Aşk, the Amsterdam-based sextet turn away from the electronic, synth-drenched sound of their 2021 albums, Âlem and Yol. While those two, created at home during the pandemic, paid homage to the electronic pop of the 80s and early 90s, Aşk, marks an exuberant return to the 70s Anatolian folk-rock sound that characterised Altın Gün’s first two albums, On (2018) and Gece (2019)." "Aşk is the closest the band have come so far to capturing the infectious energy of their live performances. “It’s definitely connecting more with a live sound – almost like a live album,” says bassist Jasper Verhulst. “We, as a band, just going into a rehearsal space together and creating music together instead of demoing at home.” “We didn’t record it like we did the last album,” agrees vocalist Merve Daşdemir. “We basically produced that one at home because of the pandemic. Now we’ve gone back to recording live on tape.” “We took a very traditional approach to recording a rock album, like in the 70s,” Verhulst adds. In this instance, that doesn’t just mean getting six musicians together in a room with a few microphones. “It’s also about the gear that we are using,” says Verhulst, “the tape and everything.”" Altin Gün (Bandcamp) |

But, above all, this is the sound of friends and collaborators joyfully reconvening to make music together again in real time and space. There’s also a deliberate return to the source in the material they’ve chosen for this album. All ten tracks are new readings of traditional Turkish folk tunes, revealing how these ancient songs remain eternally resonant and ripe for reinterpretation. “These songs have been covered so many times, always,” says Daşdemir “But not really in psychedelic pop versions,” Verhulst adds." |

The Jesus And Mary Chain | Birthday | Munki | Sony | 1998 | The Mary Chain of 1998 was far removed from the incendiary and riotous rabble rousers of 1985 but, in many ways, they were just the same. Jim and William still didn’t get on. They still didn’t like anyone else and they were still making music wildly out of step with contemporary trends. ‘Munki’ itself arrived following a four-year break. The band were burned out, worn out and severely fucked off. The joyous non-stop party of Britpop didn’t really sit well with the Mary Chain’s nihilistic rock and the band found themselves isolated and unsupported. In many ways, ‘Munki’ is the most playful of all the Mary Chain’s records. They knew their place as rock’s fucked up outsiders and revelled in it. Spitting out visceral barbs from Britpop’s extreme margins, the Reid’s used ‘Munki’ to rail against commercial capitalism, fast food and anything else that made them angry. | 1:10:28 (Pop-up)

Water From Your Eyes | True Life | True Life Single | Matador | 2023 | Brown and Amos have spent the past six years working towards selling out rooms overseas, having started out as a completely DIY operation out of their home studio set-ups. Their electro sound is as healing as it is brutal: largely inspired by early New Order, the songs are wreathed in weighty fuzz, crackle and gorgeously expansive tones, while remaining distinctly self-contained. “We’ve learned to balance each other out in certain ways,” says Amos. “The music is heady and intense, but there’s also an underlying relatability to it, too. That juxtaposition is what makes our collaboration distinctive.” It’s a synergy that’s heard on the forthcoming ‘Everyone’s Crushed’ (due May 26), the band’s first album with Matador Records | 1:20:23 (Pop-up)
The Go! Team | Bull In The Heather | Proof Of Youth (Special Edition) | Memphis Industries | 2017 | The Go! Team are an English indie rock band from Brighton, England. The band initially began as a solo project conceived by Ian Parton; however, after the unexpected success of The Go! Team's debut album, Thunder, Lightning, Strike, Parton recruited band members to play for live performances and subsequent albums. Musically, the band combines indie rock and garage rock with a mixture of funk and Bollywood soundtracks, double Dutch chants, old school hip hop and distorted guitars. Their songs are a mix of live instrumentation and samples from various sources. The band's vocals also vary between performances: while live vocals are handled mostly by lead vocalist Ninja, vocals on record also feature sampled and guest voices. | 1:24:09 (Pop-up)

Sinn Sisamouth | Unknown | Unknown | The Cambodian Vintage Music Archive | 2023 | Before the singer-songwriter Sinn Sisamouth disappeared, he had become a fixture on radio programs and in nightclubs in Cambodia and beyond. For more than two decades, from the 1950s until the mid-’70s, fans praised his smooth voice and evocative lyrics about love and the Cambodian landscape. Sinn Sisamouth’s granddaughter Sin Setsochhata said that, based on research by her father, her family believes that Sinn Sisamouth disappeared in the southern province of Kandal, which borders Vietnam. Some believe he died in a labor camp. The Guardian reported in 2007 that he had been shot. Nuha Ruby Ra | 6 In The Morning | Machine Like Me | Brace Yourself Records | 2023 | "Influenced by Nick Cave’s discordant first band The Birthday Party and German experimentalists Einstürzende Neubauten, the London artist makes hypnotic, uncomfortable, hyper-sensory music that’s about as far away from an easily-quantifiable Spotify playlist category as you can get; on stage, she prowls the space performing to a live-recorded backing track, dressed in leather with a painted N slashed where a third eye might sit. An obvious choice for a mainstream audience, Nuha most certainly is not, and yet in recent months, she’s found herself on a steady stream of high-profile tours, handpicked to support the likes of Yard Act, Viagra Boys, Warmduscher and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. This month, she’ll step it up another notch, joining Self Esteem on her sold-out victory lap. “I really would not have expected in my wildest dreams that people would connect with the music I’m doing on the current scale of things. It’s already exceeded all expectations. I thought if I was lucky I’d be some niche small, small thing, but it’s given me some genuine hope and belief in people seeing things outside of the norm,” she begins, sat next to a rail of outfit choices that include a vast array of red and black cowboy boots and coats, alongside a black bunny mask procured from a Hamburg sex shop. “Something I get from people at shows is, ‘I’ve never seen, heard or experienced anything like this before but it’s inspired me’. I think it’s a new thing for a lot of people but they seem to be into it. I think what helps is that I’m really not putting anything on. I’m very honest when I’m performing and maybe that travels through somehow. It never comes from a place of antagonism.”" Nuha Ruby Ra (Bandcamp) | * | 1:43:45 (Pop-up) |

"The spirit of [Anadolu-psych legend] Barış Manço can also be detected in “Kalk Gidelim,” which bears distinct traces of Manço’s seductive classic “Lambaya Puf De.”" Altin Gün (Bandcamp) |

Teleman | Wonderful Times | Good Time/Hard Time | Moshi Moshi | 2023 | Good Time/Hard Time is Teleman's fourth album, released via Moshi Moshi on 7th April 2023. A tree may lose its leaves but will continue to grow. For Teleman, the band’s fourth album Good Time / Hard Time is their first as a trio and sees them evolve as a force of nature as they navigate new beginnings despite a wealth of experience behind them. Music and lyrical stream of consciousness entwined, the album makes sense of a world in chaos and its words of wisdom are a vital reminder that even when things seem heavy, life is precious. | * | 2:08:37 (Pop-up) |
