Some Kind of Demon 某一種惡魔 (Yu Su Remix) |
Phantom Rhythm Remixed = 幽靈節奏 |
Wharf Cat Records |
2021 |
[Feat. Yu Su (Vancouver/Kaifeng)] "In 2019, Montréal/Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong 工工工 delivered globetrotting no wave on their debut full-length album, Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏. They homed in on their Chinese roots with [the 2021] remix album, Phantom Rhythm Remixed, via Wharf Cat Records/bié Records. // Each of the 10 remixes finds a different electronic artist with ties to China giving beat-heavy interpretations of the original album's rickety, percussion-less rock tracks, transforming Tom Ng's guitars and vocals and Joshua Frank's bass into myriad new forms. // Paying tribute to their Chinese-Canadian origins, the first remix revealed from the album is courtesy of Kaifeng-born, Vancouver-based producer and bié Records founder Yu Su. "Some Kind of Demon 某一種惡魔 (Yu Su Midnight Express Dub)" finds Yu Su chopping up Ng's vocals before dousing them in reverb and placing them atop lightly vaporwaved synths and bass. // Said Frank in a press release, "Yu Su was the first person to send us a Phantom Rhythm remix. She worked on it after finishing a tour that went all across China — which was also when we met. The pandemic had just started to get severe outside of China, and Yu Su was stuck at home in Kaifeng, while I was stuck in my apartment in New York." // The track's accompanying video features footage of Gong Gong Gong's 2018 tour of China." gonggonggong.bandcamp.com |

Vintage Crop | The North | Serve To Serve Again | Upset The Rhythm | 2020 | Vintage Crop are an Australian music group from Geelong. Their burly, brusque yet supple songs have evolved from the garage rock of 2017’s TV Organs album into the post-punk panic attack of last year’s Company Man EP. Now they’ve sculpted their sound further, the barrage now offset with robust songwriting, their full-pelt bounce tempered with flailing guitar lines and sardonic commentary. Bringing to mind Wire tackling tracks from early 7”s by The Yummy Fur, it’s an inspired approach, both striking and effortlessly mirthful. Vintage Crop still dish-up plenty of commanding stomp, their lyrics remain as keen-eyed as ever, but now they’re unafraid to mess with the tempo and drive their point home. | 0:04:50 (Pop-up)
Bad Pelicans | PARIS | Eternal Life Now | Geographie Recs | 2023 | Eternal Life Now is packed full of gems, plenty of which do what they say on the tin with no attempt to put up an illusion. Opening with Paris, the trio introduce themselves through this piece of their identity, with throbbing riffs that cause you to wade through the track instead of rush through head first. Paris is captured through the warped lens of BAD PELICANS – statuesque and seriously monochrome. | 0:07:40 (Pop-up)
Hierophants | Autofocus | Spitting Out Moonlight | Anti-Fade Records | 2019 | Hierophants are an Australian quartet who play jittery, nervous post-punk/new wave-inspired indie rock. Their simple, catchy songs feature buzzing organ and a thin layer of echo, along with lyrics expressing stress and frustration. If this project is reminiscent of Parsnip and School Damage...that's because it features members of both bands. Does everyone play with everyone in Australia? | 0:10:41 (Pop-up)
DAF | Essen Dann Schlaften | Die Kleinen Und Die Bösen | Mute | 1980 | Die Kleinen und die Bösen is the second album by Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, released on 13 June 1980. It was the first album ever released on Mute Records. Side A and the first track of side B are studio recordings produced by Conny Plank. "it helped not merely in establishing the group's cachet, but the label's and, in turn, the whole genre of experimental electronic music in the '80s and beyond." | 0:12:54 (Pop-up)
The Staches | Fake Stomach Ache | This Lake Is Pointless | Bongo Joe | 2019 | In Geneva, God and Satan share the same restaurant table. They even have the same cocaïne dealer. But it was better before ! The city had several squats. The city had its little island of freedom in the paradise of money and lies. Within this procession of rich, arrogant, famous people, Geneva kept a certain idea of resistance. The Staches are part of it with their garage rock high in vitamin. The Staches are antiscorbutic. The Staches are a fix of vitamin c in your tired veins. The Staches are fresh and bitter like grapefruit juice. The Staches keep Geneva’s body alive, inseminate energy in its inner cells, avoid its mutation into a rotting corpse. | 0:14:04 (Pop-up)

WITCH | Message from WITCH | Message from WITCH [Single] | Desert Daze Sound | 2023 | At the vanguard of the Zamrock movement from the 70's, Zambia's WITCH have returned to tour and make new music in 2023. This song speaks to the legacy of Zamrock. In response to a question regarding whether the situation back home has changed for musicians, Emmanuel "Jagari" Chanda had this to say: "Very little has changed. A musician depends on two things: The population of his country and the economic situation of his country. Your country shouldn’t be struggling between buying a CD and buying a meal. Even though I’ve seen some improvement with the young musicians that are coming up, a lot of musicians are struggling because we don’t have an industry per se. There’s no record shop. The only one that was there closed down, and I don’t know how they’re selling their music — maybe online or something. In Nigeria, they are a population of about 200 million. There, if you make one good hit song, maybe at least a million people can buy a record and it gives you time and space to create more, instead of you waking up in the morning and thinking, “Where do I get my next meal?” Or looking for people who can help you survive. There are very few musicians of my generation that are living on music today. Most of them were good musicians, but they never recorded their works. We did what we could. We were surrounded by countries that were fighting for their political freedom and we were the frontline state. South African authorities would come and bomb freedom fighters in Zambia. And then the president of the time declared curfew and blackout. That means if you go to a show at six in the evening, you can’t come out until the following day. If you’re a band, you can’t manage that, so we sometimes performed during the afternoon, and since there’s no beer and it’s only for youngsters, you didn’t get as good a crowd as if you played at night. Then AIDS came in and took a lot of people, not just musicians. It’s easier to say musicians died because they’re more famous than soldiers and teachers, but every aspect of life was affected by that scourge. Now there are very few musicians living from back then, so it’s difficult to carry the genre of Zamrock. If they were around, we would’ve showcased what was happening there in its original form. But nevertheless, we are still representing the era." WITCH (Bandcamp) | * | 0:37:36 (Pop-up) |
La Jungle | Another Look To The Woman In The Gloom | Ephemeral Feast | Gideon Chase / Black Basset Records | 2022 | "La Jungle is a techno/transe noise-rock duo from Belgium." "While definitely a child of noise rock, La Jungle takes bits-and-bobs from the whole music spectrum and loop them live with the aim to create compulsive and repetitive sequences. Hypnotic, spontaneous and willingly throbbing, sometimes bordering on an endless groove, their music may even include brief oriental doom pulses or metal diversions bang in the middle of some kraut rock epic trip." Connie Constance (Feat. Jason Williamson) | Kamikaze (Feat. Jason Williamson) | Kamikaze (Feat. Jason Williamson) | Play It Again Sam | 2023 | "Connie Constance's new rework of her track ‘Kamikaze’, featuring Sleaford Mods‘ Jason Williamson; which originally appeared on Constance’s 2022 LP ‘Miss Power’ and has been reworked ahead of some UK headline shows. Discussing the track further Connie offers: “It’s about the western beauty standard women are expected to uphold especially those in the media eye. And also the idea that we’re all meant to have it together all the time,” Constance said of the track. “It’s talking about Amy Winehouse and more recently Caroline Flack and how they were treated by the media instead of cared for in a time of need.” Of his role in the reworking of the song, Williamson added: “I love Connie’s energy and message in this track. Although the initial concept was for me to come in as an additional voice from her perspective, i felt it was disingenuous to present myself as someone with first-hand experience of the patriarchy, so I came at it from the other angle: the male counter, the gatekeeper. The tunes banging, I love it.”" | * | 0:44:09 (Pop-up) |
Shygirl [Björk Remix] | Woe (I See It From Your Side) [Björk Remix] | Nymph [Deluxe] | Because Music | 2023 | "Last year, in the run-up to her album Fossora, Björk named the British pop experimentalist Shygirl, as one of her favorite current artists. In January, we got to hear Björk and Shygirl on the same track: producer Sega Bodega’s remix of Björk’s single “Ovule.” Today, we’ve got another new Björk/Shygirl team-up, as Björk has released her remix of Shygirl’s 2022 track “Woe.” // “Woe” comes from Nymph, the full-length debut that Shygirl released last year. It’s a woozy club thumper with Shygirl asking, “Why can’t you see it from my side?” On her remix, Björk has taken the track apart completely, turning it into something spacier. Björk also adds her own vocals, turning it into a kind of dialogue with Shygirl, singing that she does see it from Shygirl’s side: “I wish her love to you would suffice/ But those bitches are not meant to satisfy/ They are just part to nursing, crying/ You’re glowing so hard.”" | * | 0:46:27 (Pop-up) |

(Brooklyn)] From New Territories, Hong Kong; comprised of a Montréal-Beijing duo. "On Gong Gong Gong’s raucous debut, 'Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏,' the minimalist Beijing duo created a drummer-less sound that was more than the sum of its parts, inspired by back-porch blues, Sahelian guitar music, New York no-wave, Cantonese lion dance percussion, and seemingly most incongruously, techno. //// With 'Phantom Rhythm Remixed,' Gong Gong Gong bring to life a concept they’ve planned since the release of their acclaimed first LP, curating their favorite China-connected electronic music producers to remix 'Phantom Rhythm' in its entirety. The globe-spanning collaboration features Yu Su (Vancouver/Kaifeng), Zaliva-D, Simon Frank, Howie Lee (Beijing), Mong Tong, Scattered Purgatory (Taipei), Knopha (Xiamen), Wu Zhuoling (Chengdu), Angel Wei (Copenhagen), and P.E. Ghost Woman | Dead And Gone | Ghost Woman | Victory Pool | 2022 | Evan John Uschenko plays his hazy psych pop raw. This is partly an homage to the old ways of DIY — continuing the legacy forged by psychonaunts in small, sweaty spaces around the world since Joe Meek first heard voices in the static — and partly due to the chaotic good mother of invention, necessity. As an integral part of Michael Rault's touring band, Uschenko gained priceless insight during his days sharing the stage with the likes of Jacco Gardner, the Mild High Club, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Honing his studio work with live performance in mind, his play became so incendiary that his rehearsal space caught fire, and whatever gear wasn't burned was later stolen from his van. The world can kick your ass sometimes, but the ever-intrepid Uschenko wouldn't allow himself to get munsoned in the middle of nowhere. Brick by brick, he built the haunted house of Ghost Woman and smudged it with the vibes of a slow-burning Nuggets compilation. | 1:15:26 (Pop-up)

Orchestra Gold | Koniya | Medicine | Orchestra Gold | 2022 | Hailing from Oakland, CA, Orchestra Gold are a kaleidoscope of sound deeply rooted in the Malian tradition while introducing a genre-bending nod to the future through their rare and artful fusion: African Psychedelic Rock. The music represents this powerful intersection, transcending borders and boundaries to be a force of healing within the community. “When we first started the band, it was really focused on reinterpreting some of the older songs from Mali,” Mariam says, speaking Bambara with Erich translating to English. “But it's really evolved into us trying to create something new that's just more a pure expression of our musical histories and where they intersect.” | 1:20:12 (Pop-up)
Kit Sebastian | Şinanay | Şinanay / French Disko (Lagniappe Session) | Mr. Bongo | 2022 | "We wanted to make a cover of Sezen Aksu for a while. She is one of our favourite Turkish singers / songwriters who inspires us with her effortless mix of different genres, playful lyrics and captivating vocals. The original of Sinanay is a beautiful example of late 80’s Turkish disco pop and the lyrics belong to an important Turkish poet, Melih Cevdet Anday, talking about the ferry that goes to Istanbul’s Princes’ Islands carrying and bringing together different segments and races of society. We liked the idea of transforming it into something more delicate and smooth, with a Brazilian inspired rhythm on guitar and jazz piano lines." | 1:24:18 (Pop-up)

The C.I.A. | Better | Surgery Channel | In The Red Records | 2023 | "Ty Segall has spent the past 15 years building a vast discography of solo releases, side projects, and genre experiments branching into familiar yet distinct phenotypes of the California auteur’s strummy rock’n’roll. The C.I.A., however, is an outlier within the Segall-verse, expanding his scope rather than filling gaps. Formed in late 2017 by Ty, wife Denée Segall, and the Cairo Gang frontman Emmett Kelly, the trio emerged with a unique amalgam of threadbare electronics, tinny bass, and Denée’s snarling spoken word." | * | 1:44:13 (Pop-up) |
AUS!Funkt, Blake Lambert | Leaders/Losers | Psychosomatic Twitch | Disco DEVIL | 2023 | "AUS!Funkt is a Toronto-based art-disco-post-punk quartet conceived in the angular jam session neo-laboratory. Rejecting the lyrical and musical excesses of rock music, AUS!Funkt combines the groove of electronic music with the subversive aggression of post-punk. The lyrics, spoken and sung, provoke the mind with their realism and repetition. Electronic beats seduce the body into movement, freeing it from its torpor. On top, the guitar spurts out clouds of noise, while the bass supplies the melody. AUS!Funkt assaults the senses and unease the mind while you dance to its unsettling disco groove. AUS!Funkt started off conceptually as a post-punk project but in the process, we embraced the elements of electronica, dub, disco, garage rock and blues while maintaining grittiness, simplicity and repetitiveness. While the sound palette expanded, the principles remained the same: the notes omitted are more important than the ones played, tension is created by removing elements from the song and when you feel that you want to change the key or play a solo – stop playing and leave some room for the rhythm to breathe." | * | 1:45:53 (Pop-up) |

I ordered some healthy dinner the other night, pre-made lentil patty with vegetable sides (cabbage, carrots, zucchini). I ate the cold patty, but i do not really like those vegetable much (especially raw!).
I did not want to waste them so i brought them house. However, i did not know how to cook them. So i said to myself, "White wine and butter usually works". So I bought a bottle of a white California blend. I added the wine, the last of the Italian butter, and spices, cooked the vegetables.
Yes, my left over vegetables with left over pasta tasted palatable. I do not care that it is 40°F degrees out. I am gonna have another glass because it tastes good.
