	6:06pm joe mulligan: the Spotify algo burns me up! they play the songs that people don't like because they are cheap and sort of "bottom inventory", then those songs end up getting more plays and appear to be favored by the listeners but it's only because the algo suggested them. so the hits are fake and not what listeners are actually choosing/liking. I've seen this happen for many artists I look up on their 'most played" songs. pffffft

	🤖 6:10pm Webhamster Henry: I used to work for Stationhead, which uses Spotify (and now Apple Music) to let you make playlists and cut into them with vocal comments, so kind lof like using Spotify as your radio channel. (I was trying to get their model of user interaction to be more like WFMU's ... I didn't last super long at that job) They've finally gotten their tech together enough so they have some traction, but if there are robots making "your" channel, and making up dialog to go with it ... hmmm!

Voice tracking is the already evil system where a company has dozens of radio stations and uses one single team to do the shows, playing the same music about dropping in local references and news to make it seem like the shows are local. So now, the already job-killing technique can get rid of the actual human talent.

	6:20pm headcleaner: From an artistic (and human) perspective, of course the idea of an AI DJ makes no sense at all. But from what the industry calls a "business perspective" -- it makes all too much sense. That sense being: whatever pushes people's buttons, and jerks their spinal cord in a way that keeps them "engaged", and at minimal cost -- is a wondrous, beautiful thing. Providing an "attractive, warm, human" context to the whatever random sound patterns they might be hearing -- just doesn't matter that much to a lot of (arguably most) folks. And certainly not the secondary market of bars, restaurants, taxis etc that just need some random muzak-y noise in the background to keep their customers appropriately numbed and distracted.

She was in the middle of a sort of rockabilly-y set, and my friend's partner came home and decided there was too much static in the reception and so put on a Spotify rockabilly channel. And we went from being surprised by every song and saying, "Wow, who's this?!" to knowing every single song that was played. Really sucked the air out of the day. And like many humans, I need air to live.

This was before stations branded them as Urban Contemporary or Oldies only or whatever. That's how the top songs of 1969 were Sugar Sugar (bubblegum) , Let the Sun Shine in (overproduced hippie anthem of Broadway), Honky Tonk Woman (raunchy rock) en.wikipedia.org...

	6:40pm Mike Sin: The larger issue is that a "freeform DJ," in general, and a WFMU DJ, in particular, are of a special breed. WFMU DJs are folks who must be so dedicated to a show week after week for no financial gain whatsoever. It can become quite consuming. That's a hard concept to sell or make folks understand who don't share that "illogical" brain construct. ;)

	6:06pm joe mulligan: the Spotify algo burns me up! they play the songs that people don't like because they are cheap and sort of "bottom inventory", then those songs end up getting more plays and appear to be favored by the listeners but it's only because the algo suggested them. so the hits are fake and not what listeners are actually choosing/liking. I've seen this happen for many artists I look up on their 'most played" songs. pffffft

(I was trying to get their model of user interaction to be more like WFMU's ... I didn't last super long at that job) They've finally gotten their tech together enough so they have some traction, but if there are robots making "your" channel, and making up dialog to go with it ... hmmm!

Voice tracking is the already evil system where a company has dozens of radio stations and uses one single team to do the shows, playing the same music about dropping in local references and news to make it seem like the shows are local. So now, the already job-killing technique can get rid of the actual human talent.

But from what the industry calls a "business perspective" -- it makes all too much sense. That sense being: whatever pushes people's buttons, and jerks their spinal cord in a way that keeps them "engaged", and at minimal cost -- is a wondrous, beautiful thing. Providing an "attractive, warm, human" context to the whatever random sound patterns they might be hearing -- just doesn't matter that much to a lot of (arguably most) folks. And certainly not the secondary market of bars, restaurants, taxis etc that just need some random muzak-y noise in the background to keep their customers appropriately numbed and distracted.
