Today: Joe Turow, author, “Americans Can’t Consent to Companies’ Use of Their Data”

PDF download of “Americans Can’t Consent to Companies’ Use of Their Data,” a report from the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania

September 27, 2021 Techtonic – Joe Turow's first appearance on Techtonic, speaking about The Voice Catchers: How Marketers Listen In to Exploit Your Feelings, Your Privacy, and Your Wallet.

Americans Flunked This Test on Online Privacy (by Natasha Singer and Jason Karaian, NYT, Feb 7, 2023): “Seventy-seven percent of the participants got nine or fewer of the 17 true-or-false questions right, amounting to an F grade, the report said.”

• On the urine scan, from the surveillance roundup on January 9, 2023, on the U-Scan Urine Sensor...

-> Withings wants you to pee on its latest device (The Verge, Jan 3, 2023)

-> It’s 2023, and tech is still pushing unsafe products: “CES brings a flood of new gadgets with dangerous technology and little vetting.” One of the conference’s “breakout favorites [was] the U-Scan urine sensor from connected health care company Withings, which analyzes hormone levels in urine and is gearing up for U.S. launch. After the Supreme Court overturned the right to an abortion in June and some states banned abortion, hormonal changes could potentially become evidence of a crime. Withings said it stores that data indefinitely and, if subpoenaed by law enforcement, would ‘comply with all legal requirements in the territories in which it operates.’ It said it doesn’t otherwise share data with third parties.”

When my chemical oncologist pushed the consent papers in front of me to sign, I said,"So, basically, my signature on this gives you consent to administer the most deadly poison to me, to actually put that in my body," and he said, "Yes." So it boiled down to if I wanted to go live or not, I had that choice, at that moment. I could sign, and live, or I could refuse, and not have access to any more life. I figure the choice to consent to corporate data pirates getting free access to my personal data is a bit like that. I can say yes, and be able to participate in the contemporary world, or I can F off and die. It's presented as being my choice. That's what you call freedom in a vacuum. Which is extortion.

There are a lot of ways to opt out of "the contemporary world" without *dying*, though! Damn, I don't have a smartphone; I won't read articles on sites that reject private browsing; I run all my internet traffic through a VPN -- these are not *death* equivalents. We're being sold the illusion of convenience in exchange for becoming products. Opting out is just not as hard as you might think.

You are absolutely correct, Handy. You CAN opt out, and I think that's where this going. It's kind of uncharted territory, because we've been sold a bill of goods. "The first one is free," as they say on the streets, to get you hooked. But you CAN kick.

Speaking of biometrics, I recently went to Mexico and the airline said they would be scanning faces, when I got to the gate i asked if it was mandatory and the attendant immediately said “no”, so I was able to decline. However everyone else lined up and had “no problem” doing so.
THEN when I was passing thru immigration the security put all the Americans in the line to get biometric scans. Fortuitously the scanner didn’t read my passport so they sent me to a person who just stamped my passport! And I was able to enter the country. I don’t understand why it’s necessary to submit to this to move about the world

The possibility of using real.email+custompart@domain for email, where the mail server strips the +privatepart but the service that uses that email for login purposes doesn't dilutes the attack surface. However, it's way better to have a very differnt email /login for every service you use, so it can't be in any way correlated for ad targeting correlation purposes.
