Ruggeri |
2006 |
Bacharach's music is characterized by unusual chord progressions, influenced by his background in jazz harmony, and uncommon selections of instruments for small orchestras. Bacharach went on to write hits for Gene Pitney, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Jackie DeShannon, Bobbie Gentry, Tom Jones, Herb Alpert, B. J. Thomas, and the Carpenters and Dionne Warwick. "I started playing piano with a little band in high school. I was terrible. I thought I had absolutely no talent. I couldn't keep time. I only got into McGill, which was a lousy music school, because they were taking American Music Students" |

R. Stevie Moore | Cool Daddio | Cool Daddio | HP Music | 1979 | Since 1968, R. Stevie Moore has self-released approximately 400 albums. Often called the "godfather of home recording", he is one of the most recognized artists of the cassette underground, and his influence is particularly felt in the bedroom and hypnagogic pop artists of the post-millennium. From 1978 until 2010, Moore lived and recorded in his apartment studios in northern New Jersey. He was also, for those who know...or don't...a WFMU staff member for a number of years. 2Mums | Psycholist | Bushmaster: Side B | Counter Clockwise | 2022 | 2MUMS were formed in 2017 when a bunch of local potato farmers from the backwaters of the far south coast of NSW joined forces to voice concerns over the influx of jar drinking hipsters, yogies, christian rock groups, retired public servants, eco-friendly vegans and social media influencers moving into the local area. This worrying demographic shift prompted a musical response as an outlet for built up frustration and resentment to boil over. The spud farmers were being pushed further out as their lands were being replaced by eco retreats and vegan pie shops. With spud farmers throughout the area disappearing off into the landscape, music became the medium for a chosen few spudding activists still remaining. 2mums has led the charge their music is as you would expect shit house but their message is clear – fuck off. I cannot tell you how much I fucking love this song. I fucking love this song. Bushnmaster: Side B is the only logical followup from their 2021 release Bushmaster (Side A) I love this band. | 0:12:42 (Pop-up)

As documented in an A&E Biography episode featuring Bacharach, the recording originated when Alpert, while visiting at Bacharach's office, asked, "Say, Burt, do you happen to have any old compositions lying around that you and Hal never recorded; maybe one I might be able to use?" Alpert said he made it his practice to ask songwriters that particular question: often a "lost pearl" was revealed. As it happened, Bacharach recalled one, found the lyrics and score sheet in his office filing cabinet, and offered it to Alpert: "Here, Herb ... you might like this one." |

The song, initially when it came out, I believe it was October of 69, the movie didn't come out until December, it did get some bad reviews. It was a very unique and different sounding song, Bacharach and David never had any qualms about trying to do anything different, or push the envelope so to speak. So nowadays, it sounds pretty tame, but back then, radio resisted it to some degree. But, when the movie came out it hit hugely and sold about 200,000 to 300,000 records a day [and continued selling] for about three years. |

This is the followup to the 2022 release "See Mystery Lights: Remixes and B sides". If so, we are very excited about this. Also, If you get poked in the eye, with like a finger, there's a good chance that your eye's going to be okay. The first thing that you should do is look in the mirror and examine your eye. If there's blood where the eye's usually white, that's one thing to keep in mind. If your eye is painful as you move it around from side to side or up and down, that's another thing that may be a cause for concern. If you cover the good eye and you look out of the eye that's injured and your vision is blurry, that may be another thing to alert you to actually go to the emergency room. Ruggeri |
2009 |
This was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David for the 1958 horror movie The Blob, which was the first big role for Steve McQueen. The movie was about a blog of goo that lands on earth and starts consuming people, growing larger and larger as it threatens the town. The Blob was a legitimate horror movie, at least by 1950s standards, but the song is a bouncy number that seemed to poke fun at the movie, almost anticipating the cult status it would attain many years later. |

Intended by lyricist Hal David to convey a woman's concern for her man who's serving in the Vietnam War, "I Say a Little Prayer" was recorded by Dionne Warwick in a 9 April 1966 session. Squid | Swing (In A Dream) | O Monolith | Warp Records | 2023 | Released Feb 8, 2023. New full-length album out June 9. ""Swing (In A Dream)" follows the band's 2021 cover of Bill Callahan's "America!", and is the first taster of their forthcoming second album. The new track is teamed with a Yoonha Park-directed video. //// Singer and drummer Ollie Judge says of the single, "This was inspired by a dream I had about a painting called The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. In my dream I was in the painting but it was flooded and everything was floating away." //// O Monolith will follow Squid's 2021 debut album Bright Green Field, and was produced by longtime collaborator Dan Carey, and mixed by John McEntire of Tortoise. The band started working on their second album only two weeks after the release of their debut, while they were on tour. //// Judge says, "Without that tour we wouldn’t have any of these tracks. People were so looking forward to seeing live music that we thought we could just play anything, even if it was unfinished. In some form or another we played about 80% of O Monolith, mostly without lyrics."" Squid - Swing (In a Dream) (Official Video) | * | 0:39:13 (Pop-up) |
WITCH | Waile | Waile (Single) | Desert Daze Sound | 2023 | Released January 27, 2023. "“Waile” is WITCH’s first original material since 1984, as well as the band’s first release with co-founder and vocalist Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda since 1977. /// "Waile" is built on a xylophone groove, with feverish bass, storm-cloud fuzz and funk guitars conjured around it. The track marauds through percussive rhythms into guitar solos and heavy snare fills, with powerful female choral refrains shifting the mood from triumph to anguish. Jagari’s lyrics touch on the struggles entwined in the histories of migrants in Zambia, Angola, the Congo and other nearby countries: “there’s a lot of death, sickness, poverty, and misery,” he says. “The song is lamenting that pitiful situation, that’s the Waile — it’s a word in the Lunda and Luvale language.” //// “'Waile' was one of the songs that I brought to the WITCH when I joined in 1978,” continues keys genius Patrick Mwondela. “While it was played live often back in the day, it was never recorded until the new formation of the band picked it up 43 years later during a rehearsal on an island in Kenya, where the band embraced it and made it their own. A few months after that, they gave it a new lease of life by recording it in Lusaka’s legendary dB Studios (site of the original WITCH 70s recordings). Sang in my native language Luvale, the subject matter is a nostalgic wailing for home of ancient African tribes that would eventually settle in Zambia." / WITCH: Jagari Chanda – Vocals / Patrick Mwondela – Keys & Synths / Jacco Gardner – Bass & Synths / Nico Mauskoviç – Drums & Percussion / Stefan Lilov – Guitar / JJ Whitefield – Guitar / Written and Arranged by Patrick Mwondela & Emmanuel Jagari Chanda / Lyrics by Patrick Mwondela & Emmanuel Jagari Chanda / Featuring: Theresa N'Gambi - Backing vocals / Hanna Tembo - Backing vocals //// Recorded live to tape at DB Studios which was equipped with the same machinery that recorded Lazy Bones in 1975 and brought back to life for the occasion for the first time in decades by Zamrock Engineer Peter Musungilo and his trusted partner Michael Linyama." BC Camplight | The Last Rotation Of Earth | The Last Rotation Of Earth | Bella Union | 2023 | Releases May 12, 2023. "Is there a curse that says Brian ‘BC Camplight’ Christinzio cannot move forward without being knocked back? That the greatest material is born out of emotional trauma? Whilst making his new album, The Last Rotation Of Earth, Christinzio’s relationship with his fiancé crumbled after nine inseparable years. The album follows this break-up amid long-term struggles with addiction and mental health. The outcome is an extraordinary record, with Christinzio describing it as “more cinematic, sophisticated and nuanced than anything I’ve done before.” He goes on to describe how the separation altered his creative focus and caused him to “scrap 95% of what I’d already recorded”, finishing The Last Rotation Of Earth in two months and making what he believes is his most vital album. //// Still, Christinzio doesn’t see any of this as a story of redemption. “This is not a story of victory,” he says. “It is a document created in the shadow of incredible darkness. One from which the creator hadn't planned on escaping, and still doesn't. Hence the title of the album. It is the result of an illness that I've battled my whole life. It isn't something that the world has done to me. It's the world I live in and it's no one's fault.” //// There is no better entry to the Camplight school of sound and vision than the opening title track and lead single. “For the first time since I arrived in Manchester,” he says, “I thought, why am I here? I came to find my music, and to find her, and she’s gone. I do everything in my power not to be dramatic, but I didn’t want to be alive anymore. So, I imagined what your last day on earth would be like. Though the lyrics are often quite sweet, like appreciating the looks that strangers give each other, from the perspective of a guy soaking up every last bit of life.”" BC Camplight (Bandcamp) | * | 0:49:11 (Pop-up) |

Sleaford Mods | Force 10 From Navarone | UK GRIM | Rough Trade | 2023 | This song was released yesterday. After announcing UK GRIM with the title-track last month, Sleaford Mods have shared a second preview of their new full-length titled "Force 10 From Navarone", which features Dry Cleaning vocalist Florence Shaw and lands with a Eddie Whelan-directed video. //// Jason Williamson says of the new release, "The track is a conversation with myself coming to terms with happiness and whether it is in fact a darker space than my negativity and depression. Coupled with that it explores the myth of activism and inaction of the majority in the UK in the presence of a corrupt government." //// He adds, "We’re big fans of Dry Cleaning and knew Flo would be perfect for the track. She’s the real deal and conjures the inspiration I get from the likes of Wu-Tang in the way she uses one word to convey a whole story." //// The duo's forthcoming album will follow 2021's Spare Ribs album. Williamson says, "Maybe we are proud of the country. Maybe we are proud to be English. Maybe I’m proud of the horrible grey streets and the shit weather and the stupid fashions I find myself investing in. It’s just that the English we’re proud of being is absolutely nothing like the English the authorities want to try and promote."" HOUSE Of ALL | Harlequin Duke | HOUSE Of ALL | Tiny Global Productions | 2023 | Newest alignment of ex-members of The Fall. "Martin Bramah, The Fall's singer until Mark E Smith's lesser guitar skills caused them to swap places, was, per Daryl Easlea, "possibly the last true equal to Smith in the group" and likewise the longest survivor of the original line-up. //// Yet while The Fall become famed in part for their legendary productivity, Bramah often went great spans of time between releases, releasing fewer albums in thirty-five years (under any guise) than he has in the last seven with Blue Orchids - who already have a fantastic new album in the can. //// What caused HOUSE Of ALL to come together is something of a mystery. Bramah has joined forces with four other mighty Fall alumni: Steve Hanley, The Fall's longest-serving bassist, as well as his brother Paul Hanley, who drummed on what may be the best run of Fall records, from "Grotesque" to "Bend Sinister". The three has also played together as Factory Star, for a brief period. Joining them are two surprise members - drummer Simon Wolstencroft, who joined the Fall around the time Paul left, and more surprisingly, guitarist Pete Greenway, The Fall's long- serving and final guitarist who has, to our knowledge, never played with any of the other four before." Theoretical Girls | Theoretical Girls (Studio) | Theoretical Record '78-'81 | Acute Records | 2002 | Studio version otherwise unreleased until this 2002 collection of mostly unreleased material by the short-lived Theoretical Girls. "Theoretical Girls were a New York-based no wave band formed by Glenn Branca and Jeff Lohn (a conceptual artist and composer) that existed from 1977 to 1981. Theoretical Girls played only about 20 shows (three of which took place in Paris). It released one single ("U.S. Millie"/"You Got Me"), which had some attention in England where it sold a few thousand copies. The band was never signed by a record company, but is well regarded as an early leading no wave group that mixed classical modern ideas of composition with punk rock. Girls In Sythesis | Screaming | The Rest Is Distraction | Own It Records | 2022 | Released Oct 14, 2022. This is an "experimental punk / no wave band from London, UK formed in late 2016." From a Louder Than War Review: "As always with a Girls In Synthesis (GIS) record there is the unavoidable, unadulterated appreciation for the band as being built bigger than the intricate sum of its parts... The Rest Is Distraction no exception. It is the sonic embodiment of all that heart, head, and hostility are pitted against it in the daily idiot-pits. Released via their Own It imprint, featuring familiar friends funkcutter, Stanley Bad on violin and horns plus some keyboards provided by ex-Fall recruit Eleni Poulou; the new album rights all wrongs, corrects certain errors, picks up and pushes against where the last laugh left off... John Linger talks about life during lockdown as being a disguised blessing for the band. It enabled them to initiate the album properly, in turn enabling them to present this sonic document, this raucous portrayal of where they are right now in the best way possible. ‘It felt like we were harnessing darker moments in our personal lives, and putting it back into the music’" Girls In Synthesis are: Jim Cubitt, John Linger, Nicole Pinto Girls In Synthesis (Bandcamp) | * | 1:22:00 (Pop-up) |
Girls At Our Best! | Warm Girls | Pleasure | Record Records | 1980 | English post-punk band, formed in Leeds in 1979, evolving from The Butterflies (14) (1978-1979). They broke up in 1982. The line-up for this song was: Judy Evans (née Gaffney) vocals / James Alan (né Pritchatt) guitar / Gerard Swift bass / Chris Oldroyd drums ////////// "Possibly the finest early eighties band never to have a chart single. Practically ever present in the Indie Charts for a brief, but magnificent, 2 years. Their first single was the much beloved Getting Nowhere Fast but it was the ‘B’ side Warm Girls which, as well as supplying the name for the band, had so many ideas and motifs packed into one song that really pointed to the direction the band would take. It was inevitable that the final riff would resurface on Fast Boyfriends – it was too good for just the one song. After the debut indie hit, the follow up singles Politics and Go For Gold resulted in them recording Richard Skinner and John Peel Sessions. Their only album, Pleasure, was an album so different from the rest of the post-punk indie pack that you can still play it now and completely baffle new listeners." | 1:24:24 (Pop-up)

On albums like Glow In The Dark (2016), Darkness Rains (2018), and Under the Spell of Joy (2020) the band challenged the soul-crushing banality of modern society and celebrated “true magical infinite potential” through a collage of scorching proto-punk riffs, earworm melodies, far-out lyrics, and lysergic auxiliary instrumentation. But on their latest album Islands in the Sky, Death Valley Girls’ songwriting mastermind Bonnie Bloomgarden uses the band’s anthemic revelries as a guidebook to spiritual healing and a roadmap for future incarnations of the self. And while these may be the loftiest aims of Death Valley Girls to date, the resulting music is also by far their most infectious and celebratory." U.S. Girls | Futures Bet | Bless This Mess | 4AD | 2023 | Releases February 24, 2023. "The highly anticipated eighth album by U.S. Girls, the nom de plume of North American multi-disciplinary and experimental pop artist Meg Remy, will be released on 24 February entitled Bless This Mess. A dynamic suite of dexterous melodies and a nuanced artistic response to the complexities of motherhood, Bless This Mess was crafted in tandem with the conception and birth of Remy’s twin boys. It expands the sonic and thematic palette of U.S. Girls, fusing the muses of funk, mythology, and the radical disorientation of joy into an electric tapestry of anthems, aches, and awakenings. To celebrate the announcement, today U.S. Girls releases the slow jam gem, ‘Futures Bet’ alongside a music video directed by Alex Kingsmill that explores the visual wonder and resiliency of trash. A combination of traditional 3D animation & composited live action footage was fed into various Stable Diffusion deep learning models. Some images in the video have up to 6 passes of the artificial intelligence reinterpretations at various strengths to create the effect. It co-stars Remy and Carlyn Bezic, who also sings on the track and will open for U.S. Girls’ 2023 tour dates under her moniker Jane Inc. As Remy’s body changed so did her voice; her diaphragm lost breathing room, adjusting to the growing lives inside. Many takes on Bless This Mess were tracked with the babies in utero, or in her arms. (She even samples her breast pump on the album’s poetic closing cut, “Pump”). The resulting performances are suffused by the physicality of this journey: more blood, more feelings, the interwoven wonders, and wounds of procreation." Future Utopia, Kae Tempest | We Were We Still Are | We Were We Still Are Single | 70Hz Recordings | 2023 | "We Were We Still Are" featuring Kae Tempest is Fraser T Smith's first outing as Future Utopia in 2023, and is also the lead outing from a new EP of the same name, due in a few months. ""We Were We Still Are" is about progression through time and space - what we keep hold of and what we leave behind," Fraser T Smith says. This has been a huge turning point for me creatively. I’ve wanted to work with Kae Tempest for years and finally got the opportunity on the title track. Bacharach! The Instrumental Side |
Varese Sarabande |
1999 |
Co-songwriter Burt Bacharach revealed in his 2014 autobiography that this song had among the most difficult lyrics Hal David ever wrote, despite being deceptively simple as a pop hit. He explained that they had the main melody and chorus written back in 1962, centering on a waltz tempo, but it took another two years for David to finally come up with the lyric, "Lord, we don't need another mountain." Once David worked out the verses, Bacharach said the song essentially "wrote itself" and they finished it in a day or two. It was as several other songs, inspired by his dismay over the Vietnam war. Dionne Warwick initially turned down recording this gem, but she eventually...figured it out. |

Clinic | Ferryboat Of The Mind | Wheeltappers and Shunters | Domino | 2019 | Clinic are at their best when they choose to explore out of the tried and true "Clinic Mode" of psych dron-y stompers. Not that there's anything wrong with the aforementioned...Wheeltappers is, in Blackburn’s words, “a satirical take on British culture, high and low.” Its songs evoke a seedy British era of traveling circuses, seaside resorts, and smoke-filled nightclubs, and its title references a long-forgotten 1970s variety show. I like this Clinic. Sandwiched in between 2019's Free Reign and 2021's delightfully wonky Fantasy Island...Wheeltappers and this song in particular is a band continuing to chart its ways into more and more creative waters...this is a good thing. | 2:00:13 (Pop-up) |
