Matt Elliott  January's Song   Favoriting The End of Days  Ici D'Ailleurs  2023  Last week, we played Matt Elliott's excellent project 'Third Eye Foundation', in a set of bleak January songs, & mentioned that he also does more intimate work but similarly bleak (though beautifully captivating) music under his own name. The very next day he released "January's Song", as if to prove that he would have the last word on the matter & theme. So that's how we'll start this February non-bleak show. "The end of days" will release on 31th of March 2023... "Matt Elliott sings this infinitely small space, this in-between between intense joy and absolute sorrow, this border between the unspeakable and the shared. Hence this feeling of nervousness, of urgency that runs through each of these compositions. January's Song reminds us how much Matt Elliott builds each of his records as a sequence of musical movements, there is something almost baroque in this second title, something of fin de siècle, something not so far from the formulas of a Santiago De Murcia." R.I.P. "Tom Verlaine (born Thomas Miller; December 13, 1949 – January 28, 2023), an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter, best known as the frontman of the New York City rock band Television." // "For Marquee Moon, Verlaine and fellow guitarist Richard Lloyd abandoned contemporary punk rock's power chords in favor of rock and jazz-inspired interplay, melodic lines, and counter-melodies. The resulting music is largely hook-driven with complex instrumental parts (particularly on longer tracks such as "Marquee Moon"), while evoking themes of adolescence, discovery, and transcendence through imagery in urban, pastoral, and nocturnal modes, including references to the geography of Lower Manhattan. Influenced by Bohemian and French poetry, Verlaine's lyrics also feature puns and double entendres intended to give the songs an impressionistic quality in describing his perception of an experience."

Warmduscher  Whale City   Favoriting Whale City  The Leaf Label  2018  Consisting of The Saulcano (FWF’s Saul Adamczewski), Mr Salt Fingers Lovecraft (Childhood’s Ben Romans-Hopcraft) and various ex-Fat Whites and members of Paranoid London with equally silly pseudonyms, Warmduscher follow the modus operandi of the entire FWF umbrella corporation. That is, they pick a traditional genre and do everything in their wicked power to leave it a broken, quivering wreck by the time they’re finished with it. Like a grime-funk Sin City, ‘Whale City’ is peopled by a colourful cast of deviants. The title track concerns glamorous junkie Jimmy and bulk-mover Lilly scamming and sleazing their way to the top in this filthy metropolis. Warmduscher offer an ultimately imaginative, fun and thrilling take on rock ‘n’ roll, in an era where music of this ilk can feel so suffocating. Never boring, never dull, this is a glowing, fire-breathin’, thunder-clappin’ ghost train of a band. WE ARE GOING TO SEE THEM IN CONCERT AND I CANNOT WAIT.    0:15:47 (Pop-up)
Hotel Lux  National Team   Favoriting Hands Across The Creek  The state51 Conspiracy  2023  ‘National Team’ is from their forthcoming album Hands Across The Creek, which will be released on January 27th. ‘National Team’ is a football-themed tune, “an ode to the ageing and beautiful game.” Discussing the track, the band said: “The tune was conceived when I was sat watching England’s National Football Team play on the TV whilst tucking into a very sad takeaway, watching people my age and considerably younger winning at life.”  *   0:18:13 (Pop-up)
Immy Owusu  Brown Supremacy   Favoriting Brown Supremacy Single  Hopestreet Recordings  2022  Immanuel Kwabena Dreessens-Owusu grew up in two worlds: the sea bleached lifestyle of Torquay and the Surf Coast with its rock n roll soundtrack, and the musical heritage of his Ghanaian / Dutch family. Immy’s father Kojo is one of Australia’s best regarded West African musicians and his grandfather Koo Nimo is foundational figure of Ghanaian Highlife. On Brown Supremacy, Immy takes Amanzaz loops, and weaves his own songwriting over the top, keeping the iconic riff and the “get together, stay together” hook from the original. He adds chunky kicks and snares, fuzz atmospherics, and ‘Castles Made Of Sand’ reverse delay guitar. Immy says, ‘When I first moved to Torquay, for some kids I was the first ‘black’ person they had ever seen before, and their first experience from any other culture that wasn’t their own. In high school I pushed away from people who looked like me in an attempt to fit into the establishment. How ‘black’ I felt was compounded by how ‘white’ I was treated by my Ghanaian family (in Africa). For me this song is my story about finding a place to belong.’    0:21:45 (Pop-up)
PAINT  Ta Fardah   Favoriting Spiritual Vegas  Mexian Summer  2020  Pedrum Siadatian first rose to prominence in psychedelic circles for his guitar and vocal contributions to the astral navigations of mercurial L.A. band Allah-Las, but approaches his solo project Paint with a crystal-clear focus. Spiritual Vegas follows 2018’s eponymous debut, and is full to the brim with lazing psychedelic pop songs and winding guitar melodies. Siadatian’s influences are worn on his sleeve: Kevin Ayers, Felt, Turkish psych, Brian Jonestown Massacre, etc...Ta Fardah’ is sung in Farsi as a nod to Siadatian’s Iranian heritage. Winding psychedelic melodies come thick and fast, showcasing Siadatian’s aptitude as a guitarist as much as a crafter of fantastical ditties....    0:25:48 (Pop-up)

Gina Birch  I Play My Bass Loud   Favoriting I Play My Bass Loud  Third Man Records  2023  "Legendary post-punk musician, artist, and filmmaker Gina Birch has announced the release of her debut solo album, I Play My Bass Loud, arriving via Third Man Records on Friday, February 24, 2023." " Birch recorded with Youth (Killing Joke, U2, Toots and the Maytals) at his garden shed studio in Wandsworth, England. While many of the album’s songs were fully formed by Birch before the sessions, the two artists teamed up to co-write a number of additional tracks..." “It was a fabulous experience to record at Youth’s in Wandsworth,” says Birch. “Youth likes my passion and my bad guitar playing. I like his attitude, so calm and focused... in a Zen kind of way. We are in fact opposite sides of the same coin.” "I Play My Bass Loud, its declarative title evoking her singular instrumental approach as well as a potent rebuke to how female musicians can be diminutively typecast and ignored. “There’s the whole thing about women playing their music and wanting to be heard, wanting acknowledgment or the space to do it,” Birch says. “The bass is sometimes assigned as a lesser instrument, and yet because of reggae and the creativity of a lot of women players, it has always been a creative and phenomenal instrument.”" The title track features no less than five female bassists, including The Modettes’ Jane Crockford and Emily Elhaj, bassist for Angel Olsen (with whom The Raincoats collaborated in 2016). “I always thought, if I open my big bay window upstairs and play my bass, I’m not some groovy young rapper,” says Birch. “I’m this old white woman playing my bass guitar out of my window. I just want to stick my head out and yell down the street: HELL, I’M HERE, AND I’M PLAYING MY BASS LOUD!” Along with her eclectic musical output, Birch has proven a gifted filmmaker, directing videos for The Raincoats, as well as such like-minded artists as The Libertines, New Order, Beth Orton, and more. In recent years, Birch has committed herself to painting, creating a growing body of work that saw her illustrate a recent book of Sharon Van Etten’s lyrics." This song, as all songs in this set, feature the production work of Martin Glover, AKA Youth... He seems to have been busy lately producing amazing female artists that were at the vanguard of the original punk/post-punk first wave.  *   0:38:52 (Pop-up)
Vivien Goldman  Next Is Now   Favoriting Next Is Now  Youth Sounds / Cadiz Entertainment  2021  "Vivien Goldman's substantial role in punk history is firmly cemented by not just her books and music journalism and her work as a "professor of punk" at New York University, but also by her musical output as part of art pop collective the Flying Lizards and her solo recordings. Goldman's dubby and danceable 1981 single "Launderette" ranks as a post-punk essential, the kind of strange and inventive track that somehow manages to feel perpetually new as years go on. Arriving just about 40 years later, Next Is Now, Goldman's first solo music in decades, holds elements of the same excitement and studio exploration that she excelled at in the late '70s and early '80s. The echo-drenched vocals, deep bass lines, and digital horn lines of tracks like "Russian Doll" and "Saturday Afternoon" replicate the meeting of dub-informed production and rough-edged punk that defined her best early tracks. Along with producer Youth, Goldman dabbles in various styles throughout the course of Next Is Now"    0:43:11 (Pop-up)
Brix Smith  Fast Net   Favoriting Valley Of The Dolls  Grit Over Glamour  2023  "The Fall veteran Brix Smith has revealed plans to release a solo album called ‘Valley Of The Dolls’, as well as sharing details of an all-female live supergroup featuring members of My Bloody Valentine." "The punk legend, known for her work with The Fall as well as her own band The Extricated among others, was speaking at the AIF Festival Congress 2022 in Bristol earlier this week to discuss her work as as President of The F-List For Music – a not-for-profit organisation set up to help female musicians gain greater representation and professional opportunities in the UK music industry. Towards the end of her talk, Smith shared information about an upcoming record made with Killing Joke bassist and esteemed producer Youth. “Nobody knows about this in public, so hello – get ready,” she began. “During lockdown I was put together by a manager to write. I wanted to stop doing The Extricated, I wanted to do something else, I didn’t know what. “I was put together as a songwriter with Youth. His manager said, ‘Youth is a Shaman and you’re a witch so you two are perfect together’. We’d never met before but we met on Facetime and we started to send files backwards and forwards.” With Youth working from Spain and Smith in London, he would send her backing tracks while she would return lyrics and vocals before it “quickly developed into something special”. “He said, ‘Brix – this is your solo album. This is not going to be for anyone else’,” said Smith. “Now I’ve finished the album with Youth, it’s just about to be mastered, we’ve got two amazing guest female vocalists on it.” Smith also went on to tell the Bristol crowd that the album would be called ‘Valley Of The Dolls’ and “will hopefully be out by the end of the year and hopefully singles will be dropping quite soon.” Discussing plans to tour the project, Smith explained how she “decided to put together an all-female band”. “This is the announcement: I’m going out on the road with an all-female band,” she revealed. “Two of them are from My Bloody Valentine. I’ve got Deb Googe on bass and Jen Marco on keys and guitar. Then I have two other women from a duo that you may have heard of called from Deux Furieuses. They’re a mixture of Savages and Royal Blood and they’re called Vas and Ros.” She added: “I’m going under the name Brix Smith or possibly Brix Smith Group, I haven’t decided yet. It’s time for me to put my money where my mouth is and take it out there! All of us are between 40 and 60 and they’re all top post-punk feminists.” Smith went on to explain how “the dynamic of playing with all women” was “something I’ve never done”. “I’ve always been a woman in a man’s world,” she added. “The Fall were dirty, ugly blokes, you know? The dynamic of playing with these women is just phenomenal. It’s just nice to be hanging out with great like-minded people." She has also been quoted as saying “I’ve put together the motherfucker of all girl bands.”  *   0:47:03 (Pop-up)
Poly Styrene  I Luv Ur Sneakers   Favoriting Generation Indigo  Future Noise Music Ltd.  2011  Said Poly Styrene about her (final) album: ""It's an upbeat album. I wanted to put something positive out there. We need to get back to love and light and stop fighting over resources." Killing Joke's Youth produced Generation Indigo at his studio in Spain after hearing and loving Poly's new output - and by all accounts, having Youth at the helm is always a demanding, highly productive, process, which often involves writing new songs every day. No sitting around drinking tea and noodling at this particular studio... "I came to him with 15 songs, not all of which ended up on the album of course, but he told me to go back to my hotel and write five more," explains Poly. "Some of them didn't have enough hooks so I needed to work on that too. He can be quite tough but it was a good experience. Youth brought a lot of new elements into it." The title, Generation Indigo, was inspired by Indigo Children, "the generation my daughter was born into, a generation that can change things""    0:50:12 (Pop-up)
Essential Logic  Land Of Kali (Full Version)   Favoriting Land Of Kali  Hiss And Shake  2022  It was such a fantastic surprise to see the birth of a new Essential Logic full length last year! The Land of Kali (co-produced by Youth), is the first new Essential Logic studio album in 43 years. Laura Logic says of Youth: "He is an awesome magician and very in tune to different levels of reality. I was pleasantly surprised when I knocked on his door for the first time with a few sketches of songs. His house was full of beautiful old paintings of Radna Krishna, Indian instruments, deities of Buddha, Ganesh, Jesus, temple bells... I had no idea we would have so much in common! He had also lived in India and recorded monks for weeks on end in a Buddhist monastery and visited ancient temples there. We both share a love for the real India. Despite the limitations of working through lockdown, we had some wonderful esoteric chats on the occasions when we met up for recording and mixing..."  *   0:54:01 (Pop-up)

Kiss Them For Me (Kathak Mix #1)   Favoriting

Superstition [Deluxe version]

Polydor

1991

"The song presented a change in musical direction for Siouxsie and the Banshees, adopting a much more straightforward pop-oriented feel than previous efforts, due in part to Hague's production work. Siouxsie Sioux's cryptic lyrics were an ode to actress and sex symbol Jayne Mansfield. The lyrics use Mansfield's catchword "divoon", referring to her heart-shaped swimming pool and her love of champagne and parties, and to the car crash that killed her in 1967. Kiss Them for Me was also the name of a 20th Century Fox motion picture made in 1957 starring Mansfield and Cary Grant." "The "Kathak Mix", remixed by producer Youth, features spoken samples of Robert Anton Wilson in the introduction."

Hot Chip  Over and Over   Favoriting The Warning  Domino  2006  I love this song. I LOVE THIS SONG. A rhapsodic, DFA-sized slice of smart pop that sauces about like George Galloway in a ‘Sheba’ factory, here’s where Hot Chip get clever enough to dispense with those honky Prince-isms, and replaced them with a James Murphy strut and addictive hooks. And yet it’s a charmingly British thrill – you suspect that what sounds like a muted cowbell here is actually someone hitting a kettle with a stick, plus there’s an arch lyricism to lines such as, “Like a monkey with a miniature cymbal/The smell of repetition really is in you” and nudge-nudge humour when it all goes Kraftwerk in the middle and a robot intones “K.I.S.S.I.N.G.S.E.X.I.N.G./C.A.S.I.O.P.O.K.E.” for no apparent reason. Electro-suave. Fuck, I miss 2006.    1:15:24 (Pop-up)
Buffalo Daughter  Socks, Drugs And Rock 'n' Roll   Favoriting New Rock  Buffalo Ranch  1998  This is one of those wonderful songs that in no way, shape or form sounds 25 years old. Buffalo Daughter is considered to be the linchpin of the so-called "cut-and-paste" rock Shibuya-kei movement from Japan. In a 1998 interview, the group explained that "Buffalo" projects a pleasing image of American culture and countryside and at the time of the group's original formation, all the members were girls, so "Daughter" was appropriate.    1:21:18 (Pop-up)
Josef K  Fun N' Frenzy   Favoriting The Only Fun In Town  Postcard Records  1981  The band was formed in 1979 originally as TV Art by Paul Haig (vocals, guitar) and Ronnie Torrance (drums), later joined by Malcolm Ross (guitar, keyboards), with Gary McCormack added on bass guitar, who soon left (later joining The Exploited) with David Weddell replacing him. They disliked the name and were inspired to change it when they were asked at the last minute to open for the Clash at the Odeon on January 20, 1980 after the original opener dropped out. They recorded their debut album and immediately shelved it for sounding "too polished", then returned to the studio in Belgium to record The Only Fun in Town, opting for a more 'live' sound and recording the whole album in two days, Haig later expressing a measure of regret that "we decided to make an almost unlistenable record with the vocals mixed down really low". They split shortly after in 1982 with Haig going solo, and other members ending up in Orange Juice, Blancmange, Aztec Camera and other bands of note...    1:24:32 (Pop-up)

It's all the logic you need and want...Pedigree Charm remains a great forgotten album of the era. A little more controlled than her debut, Pedigree Charm never disappoints. If your ears have been opened wide by Beat Rhythm News, than denying yourself the many pleasures of this recording is senseless. SENSELESS AND WITHOUT LOGIC.    1:26:28 (Pop-up)

Italia 90  Magdalene   Favoriting Living Human Treasure  Brace Yourself Records  2023  First full-length from London, UK quartet, released Jan 18, 2023. "Living Human Treasure was recorded at the residential Echo Zoo studio in Eastbourne. With five days booked the whole album was tracked within two days with producer Louis Milburn. For the rest of the allotted time, they explored the nooks and crannies of the building and the bounty of unusual instruments lying around to add mystical textures to the bones of the music. From the album...The abuse of women in the Magdalene laundries is directly addressed (on the third) track. The disdain expressed against the Irish Catholic church is literally spat out: // “Magdalene, Magdalene, Magdalene, Magdalene the killer, // Magdalene, Magdalene, Magdalene, Magdalene the killer” // As is befitting the subject matter it’s loud and repetitive, as if attempting to ensure all are aware of such an atrocity and that the victims should never be forgotten. Italia 90 use their music to make strong statements on social injustice, as well as commentary on the state of the nation. It is strong, opiniated and at times uncomfortable. In this case the unacceptable consequences of this institution is highlighted, and that is a power in itself." (Partial quote from "God Is In The TV" 'zine/site) Italia 90 (Bandcamp) ///////// Italia 90 (Magdelene Video [official]) //////// ------ "The Magdalene Laundries in Ireland, also known as Magdalene asylums, were institutions usually run by Roman Catholic orders, which operated from the 18th to the late 20th centuries. They were run ostensibly to house "fallen women", an estimated 30,000 of whom were confined in these institutions in Ireland. In 1993, unmarked graves of 155 women were uncovered in the convent grounds of one of the laundries. This led to media revelations about the operations of the secretive institutions. A formal state apology was issued in 2013, and a £50 million compensation scheme for survivors was set up by the Irish Government. The religious orders which operated the laundries have rejected activist demands that they financially contribute to this programme"  *   1:47:49 (Pop-up)

Instead, bass guitar duties on the album are handled by Simon "Ding" Archer, a former member of the British post-punk band The Fall. The album combines all the songs from the band's 2013–14 extended play releases—EP1, EP2, and EP3—which were recorded and produced in 2012 by Gil Norton, who produced the band's previous albums Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde."    1:51:03 (Pop-up)

And Decius, and Lias Saoudi are indeed, salacious. Decius is when members of Trashmouth Records, Fat White Family & Paranoid London find themselves climbing out of a hole together at a disco after hours. Other than canonisation, we have no plans for the future. 'Roberto's Tumescence', the fourth and final single from the now seminal 'Decius Vol. I' is here for you NOW. Robert Wyatt  Pigs... (In There)   Favoriting EP's  Domino  1999  A founding member of the influential Canterbury scene bands Soft Machine and Matching Mole, he was initially a kit drummer and singer before becoming paraplegic following an accidental fall from a window in 1973, which led him to abandon band work, explore other instruments, and begin a forty-year solo career. A key player during the formative years of British jazz fusion, psychedelia and progressive rock, Wyatt's own work became increasingly interpretative, collaborative and politicised from the mid-1970s onwards. His solo music has covered a particularly individual musical terrain ranging from covers of pop singles to shifting, amorphous song collections drawing on elements of jazz, folk and nursery rhyme. Wyatt retired from his music career in 2014, stating "there is a pride in stopping, I don't want the music to go off."    2:03:13 (Pop-up)
