With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

* The Bottom Line
a glass of water
a minor breakdown
2oz Glen Passaic
You've made it through Dry January, almost. The weight of your newfound sobriety sits heavy on your shoulders, much like the monkey that used to hang out on your back, but without the sense of humor. You hail an AI-powered e-bike rickshaw, and tell the bot to take you to the Stork. There, the bar seems higher than it did before. You're eye-level to the coasters. You ask the barkeep, "Mitts" Fitzmullen for a glass of water with nothing. "I didn't catch that," says Mitts. "How's about a Glen Passaic?"
"Please, just a glass of water." As you speak, the room goes silent. The word "water" hangs in the air like a Zeppelin over Lakehurst.
"Water, huh." Mitts pours it for you just the same. You try to reach it, but you cannot. A force as implacable as gravity itself pins you to the footrail. You cannot lift your head. You cannot lift your eyes. This is the floor where you will spend what remains of your joyless life.
Just then, a drill-bit pierces the stile by your cheek. An eye peeps through, a kindly, blue-gray eye, followed by a voice: "You sure you don't want that Glen Passaic?"
"Give it to me," you mutter.
The eye disappears. A tube of non-reactive silicon passes through the hole. Like a hungry infant presented with the breast, you fasten yourself to it, as through it flows an elixir, fumy and metallic, sweet bitter cool and hot all at once, as though life and death themselves had bled themselves into a high-powered blender and punched up Purée…
You stand. The room swims, yes, but it swims like Esther Williams. You hear music and conversation again. It's like you'd been screwing up your ears to listen to a record, and -- smh! -- realized you'd forgot to turn on the amp. For better or worse, you're back where you belong. Yes, you'll have another. This time, hold the clear stuff.
