It is Eartha Kitt's birthday, here is an interesting article about her time in Instanbul www.theparisreview.org...

Ahoy, Devon & Island dwellers!

I've seen Solaris and Stalker; both are strange.

Ultra, I recently saw clips of Eartha doing two interesting numbers on Ed Sullivan that I can’t find on any albums of hers. (Blanking on the titles, & she was a frequent guest.) It’s a shame she is mainly remembered for “Santa Baby” & “I Want to Be Evil” (both of them novelties that I really don’t feel the need to hear ever again) and Catwoman.

And for saying (Paraphrasing) “Fuck You, i’ll Learn Japanese” when the Jim Crow stages and concert halls of America closed to her

As well as Yzma in "The Emperor's New Groove".

There are a bunch of clips of her on Sullivan on you tube (Ki Mitzion, Mad About The Boy, On The Plains Of Negev, What Is This Thing Called Love, C'Est Si Bon etc). She pops up on the Spector mini-series in a clip from Merv Griffin's show where she antagonizes Phil, who is in a particularly surly mood. I have a particular fondness for I'd Rather Be Burned As A Witch twitter.com...

HappPppPy Birthday, Eartha Kitt!
  8:24pm
ron-ji:

Well, yes, it is good that we remember Ms. Kitt for those reasons too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
ultradamno:

I tend to prefer Newmar as Catwoman though. Kitt doing it at all was a groundbreaking moment, I guess, but now I agree it's almost a distraction from the meat of what made her great.

Bonus thanks for the link to your Twitter feed, Ultra. (I’m your newest follower @ronehmke there—Elon willing—in case you hadn’t figured that out a few seconds ago.)

I did and followed back. Thanks!

Also, what’s this about a Phil Spector miniseries?!? (I’ll take my answer off the air, for the question takes us even farther from the deceased Russian composer we are here to honor tonight.)

I don't want to jinx it, but the stream has been co-operating the whole show so far...
  8:40pm
Androu B.:

I know I might be opening up a Pandora's Box of debate here, but I feel this question needs to be asked:
Would Artemeyev's music be considered as prog on the whole, or does it merely have the essential elements that allow it to cross over into that genre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm

Stream has been sounding swell for me for as long as I've been listening (20 minutes)

I've been listening tonight through VLC (as I often do) and have been getting occasional "microlooping" glitches (or "stuttering", as I can best describe it).

↳ Gaston Musella @8:43
I think that was the stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
ultradamno:

I always kind of think of proggy scores as their own separate beast from prog proper. Maybe because they get to it from the other direction (working 'rock' elements in rather than the other way around)
  8:47pm
ron-ji:

Thanks again, Ultra—and I too have been able to listen without any glitches, further evidence for my premise that the Ascended Masters have a bone to pick with Micah and his flock.

Sounded like someone was using a hammer drill on the stream. Hopefully that fixed it..
  8:53pm
Androu B.:

Thanks, Devon! I trust you'll have an RIP show set up for Madamma Lollobrigida sometime within the next few weeks.

Another excellent tribute. Revered musicians have been dying so often these days that it sometimes feels like WFMU is becoming The Obituary Station. But nobody does ‘em better.
