Ok, who ordered the Glen Ripple?*

* The Stork introduced the Glen Ripple in the late 60s, during the club's short-lived psychedelic phase. (As said bartender Matt "Hot Pastrami" Moriarity, "Tie-dye? We're weirder than that.") Though technically a temperance cocktail, in that it is alcohol-free, even its side-effects have side-effects.

2oz Glen Passaic
1 tab best acid
1 gram dried Psilocybe cubensis mushroom
1 large bud Raritan Red sinsemilla, crushed
still water
sunshine

On Friday evening, in an 8oz Ball jar, set dry ingredients to dissolve in Glen Passaic. On Sunday afternoon, at day's peak warmth, when the light shows golden through the liquid, remove the lid, and set the vapors afire with a long match. After alcohol has burned off, strain into highball glass and top with still water and not a pebble of ice. Unstring the harps, refill the cups and, if anyone remains thirsty, bid them drink from the fountain downstairs.

Thanks for the link, Dean. That stuff fascinates me. I don't know how people reconstruct those ancient musics, or even the thought processes and world-views that drove them, beyond a certain point. So ancient and alien to our world, even though we're rooted in it

My favorite Pot Pie comment:

We made this for the Super Bowl. The pie was very tasty, but it did not deliver a win for our team, the 49ers. In fact, it may be responsible for them blowing a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter. I sincerely hope the writer can fix this in other sports friendly recipes or at least include some ingredients or steps to ensure positive outcomes in the future.

WR, Friend of a friend worked with Bowie on (I think the last) record. Story goes, when he met Bowie he said what a big fan he was and that it may be evident that he had been borrowing a good deal from him. Bowie's reply was to put his arm around him and say, "Darling, you can't steal from a theif."

rw @232 i like that about Bowie.
at some point i read an interview (i i think people magazine!) it was in the 80s or 90s, several years after i'd given up on his music.
and i decided i like him -even if i didn't like his music (last i'd heard at the time) and loathed his recent personas at that time, i liked HIM.
the main reason was because despite his clown act ("thin white duke", etc) - and clowns are inherently dishonest, he was honest in real life.

I cottoned on to Bowie, himself, in the early 70s, when I started following his appearances in the rock press. He was emulating Andy Warhol (I reasoned out later), and it became obvious right away that every response to a question was outrageous nonsense; he's say anything to get attention, and there no consistency to it either, in keeping with his rapid exchange of masks. It was really funny to me (I laughed) because he seemed to do it all with a subtle wink of the eye, which was very bold because I don't think he was all that self-confident in himself, but he had faith in some mysterious power he recognized in artifice. I loved that. A lot of notions were entertained and then thrown out during those years, like the sequence of propulsion stages a manned rocket drops off as it climbs out of the atmosphere. Then later, once Bowie had found stability, by cleaning up among other things, I like him again because he became generous and helpful to people, beginning with his near-anonymous turn as the piano player in Iggy's band: just a guy in the background who looked vaguely familiar. He was an interesting fellow.
