Wire | Second Length (Our Swimmer) | Document and Eyewitness: 1979-1980 [Deluxe] | Rough Trade | 1979 | We ended last week's broadcast w/ Wire's "Our Swimmer". Why not double down??!! This was Wire's answer to whatever questions their original recording had raised. In Dec 1979 they recorded the original in Magritte Studio, Harmondsworth. By the time a few months had gone by, they had reworked it a couple of times over in another studio. (Scorpio Sound, London Apr-May 1980.) While the original version had light and shade, this one pummels its way through, speeding up the interplay without losing the hooks. | 0:00:15 (Pop-up)

A much more severely reworked version of "Our Swimmer", because as any fan of Wire knows, you can't have too many perverse versions of the same song. |

Simply Saucer | Exit Plexit | Half Human / Half Live | Sonic Unyon Records | 2008 | "Half Human, Half Live Review by Mark Deming... Simply Saucer had been out of commission for more than a decade when Cyborgs Revisited, a collection of demos and live tracks they recorded in the mid-'70s, was issued on vinyl in 1989 and established the group as a record collector geek's dream band -- a group laboring in utter obscurity who were creating something truly unique, a wacked-out fusion of Can, the Velvet Underground, the Kinks, and Syd Barrett created at a time when even those wildly influential acts were off the radar of most rock fans, especially in the Canadian factory town of Hamilton, Ontario. When Cyborgs Revisited was reissued on CD in 2003 with a stack of bonus tracks, the buzz about Simply Saucer grew a bit louder, but no one was honestly expecting the band to ever re-form (especially given the fact lead guitarist and singer Edgar Breau had given up electric guitar after quitting the band), making the existence of Half Human, Half Live, the first proper Simply Saucer album, something of a surprise. While Breau and bassist Kevin Christoff are the only two members of the original edition of Simply Saucer to appear on these sessions, the sound and feel of this album is consistent with the scraps collected on Cyborgs Revisited, though this material has the advantage of having been recorded under more welcoming circumstances, in a proper studio and with a solid lineup of musicians, and the three way fusion of the trippy, the furious, and the joyous is still potent and effective nearly three decades after the group gave up the ghost..." Chris Houston | Psychadelic Igloo | Hazards Of Glitter | DWrecs | 2018 | "Chris Houston is a Canadian punk rock musician and songwriter, who was in the band the Forgotten Rebels in the late 1970s. He co-wrote "Surfin' on Heroin", one of the band's most famous songs. Following the band's album This Ain't Hollywood, he left to pursue a solo career. He recorded songs for four of the five It Came from Canada compilation albums, including a solo rendition of "Surfin' on Heroin". He released his solo debut Chris Houston and the Sex Machine domestically as a vinyl LP in 1986 on label Caucasian Records. On cassette tape, he released Hate Filled Man in 1987 on Caucasian-Driveway Records. He lived in Vancouver B.C. for a spell, working as a writer for the CBC Television teen series Pilot One, and now lives and performs in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario." This song, though, is much more about Toronto. We were collectively trying to think of different songs about Toronto on the way back from Hamilton this weekend. Little did I know I had just bought one a couple of hours earlier. This album is a who's who of artists from the Hamilton/Toronto area.
TV Freaks | Mediation | Destroy Music Start Your Own Band (V/A Comp.) | Schizophrenic Records | 2012 | Lead-off track from a compilation album from Hamilton; a Steel Town here in Canada not far from Toronto. "Inspiration Crummins" it says on the label on the record. The back cover & insert shows pictures of Imants Krumins (1952-2011.) The caption on the back: This one is for you Imants, a true supporter of D.I.Y. Independent music. Thanks for coming to our shows, buying our releases, sharing the word, giving us a ride, handing out a flyer and being a great friend. Rest Playing Music." This LP is a compilation of Hamilton (mostly punk) bands. It was a joint effort between Hammer City Records (a now-defunct Hamilton record store) and Schizophrenic Records. We found it this weekend in a Hamilton record store called "Into The Abyss". We saw TV Freaks live once, they were fantastic! TV Freaks Bandcamp | 0:14:58 (Pop-up)
Forgotten Rebels | You're A Rebel, Too | In Love With The System | Star Records | 1980 | "December 1979 - Plans develop for Star Records - The Store to become Star Records - The Label. Dec 13, I take Mike Shulga to see The Forgotten Rebels practice. The new line-up consists of Mickey plus Al Mocambo (Al Smolak - guitar), Pogo Au Go Go (Chris Houston - bass) and Larry Electrician (Larry Potvin - drums). I tell Shulga we must record the Rebels so that 'Elvis is Dead' is preserved for posterity.' He agrees. (Source: Bob Bryden's website) - Friday, February 15, 1980: First day of recording The Forgotten Rebels 'In Love with the System' LP at Sound Kitchen recording studio on Weston Road in Toronto 12 bedtracks in one day. I call it 'guerilla recording'. Sunday February 24, 1980 - Marathon mix-down of Rebels LP. March 24, 1980 - Finish mix of Rebels LP. Album mastered March 25 at Phase One in Toronto. (Source: Bob Bryden's website) - April 7, 1980: 'In Love with the System' LP cover design finished. Concept by myself and Richard Chomko. Tuesday April 29, 1980 - I am informed by Brian Simpkins, manager of Golden Records (record plant) that 3 of Toronto's printing houses will not, I repeat will NOT print The Forgotten Rebels album cover or insert because of profanity. I quote Luis Bunuel to myself: 'In a world as badly made as this one, there is only one road - rebellion.' Despite all of our efforts to convince the printers to do the job - we are 'forced' to black out the title of one of the songs on the back cover if we want the album out on time. We are working on getting a Ramones show for the area and having the Rebels open up. Wednesday, May 14, 1980 - The Forgotten Rebel 'In Love with the System' LP is released on Star Records - The Label with No Choice. Wednesday, May 21, 1980 - The Ramones come to Star Records, Hamilton for an autograph session. That night The Forgotten Rebels open up for them in Burlington." | 0:17:09 (Pop-up)
Sailboats Are White | Unfair Nitemare | Destroy Music Start Your Own Band (V/A Comp.) | Schizophrenic Records | 2012 | Flip the record, this is the lead-off track from the second side of the aforementioned compilation album from Hamilton. This LP is a compilation of Hamilton (mostly punk) bands. It was a joint effort between Hammer City Records (a now-defunct Hamilton record store) and Schizophrenic Records. We found it this weekend in a Hamilton record store called "Into The Abyss". I had first met Kevin when he played in another truly excellent Hamilton band called 'The Battleship, Ethel'. Afterwards, he moved on to this project. I have seen Sailboats Are White. They were fantastic! Here's what they say about themselves: "As completely incidental as it may seem, the acronym for Sailboats Are White is in fact SAW. Coincidence? Perhaps, but it's also a pretty accurate musical description. You see, saws are used to cut through things like bone, metal and possibly wood; likewise though, Sailboats' music is just as fierce, cutting and destructive to the senses as say, a lumberjack's saw would be to a maple tree." Building Castles Out of Matchsticks is the musical diary of Anne Sulikowski. Anne has been musical since she was a child and started noodling with electronics in her last year of high school. Since then, she has performed in many groups and duos, often sticking to improvised works and various forms of audio installations. She primarily uses synthesizers and many, many effects pedals and guitars... Anne began Building Castles Out of Matchsticks, as a solo project in Winter 2000, to musically document and explore extraordinary events, dreams, her experience of love and lack of love, battles with introspection, her wildly vivid imagination, promises made and broken, random thoughts and all the simple pleasures and bursts of boredom in her everyday life... A musical diary of a wanderer... Building Castles Out of Matchsticks is no stranger to Chromosphere. Her brilliance is scattered all over Chromosphere's 1999’s debut album, Red Candy, where she turned a pedestrian group of electronic scribblings into something magical. Kris Helstrom of Chromosphere says, "Time and opportunity has allowed me to look around in her world and hopefully repay the debt by reimagining three of her already perfect pieces, and giving them a different colour of light to hear them by. I can take no credit for the beauty of these songs, Anne provided that without spare, I only endeavoured to change the focus of each song to show the same beauty from a different perspective." "I recorded Dickhop while I was working and staying in a hotel downtown Toronto." says Anne Sulikowski, "It represented a type of walk I noticed people in the area were portraying. I called it Dickhop, as it sort of had a nose in the air high fashion quality about it I despised. You see I've already waited too long is a piece of accidental guitar, one of reflection and too much reverb. Pocket universe is a track that was released with my album "to dream outside the lines" it was recorded late at night after an internet binge of guitar pedal demos and articles about different theories of the universe. Throw some weed in there and my amazing pedal collection and that recording was born. I'm thankful and honoured that Chromosphere has reworked my pieces so brilliantly, Kris is someone I am forever thankful to as he taught me so much about synthesis, 80s new wave and the importance of the pitch bender." credits released November 29, 2018 All music by Anne Sulikowski. Dumb | Gibberish | Pray 4 Tomorrow | Mint Records | 2022 | “Dumb had a classic start as a DIY outfit back in 2015, playing their first shows in the dining room of a tear-down in east Vancouver. The four band members — Franco Rossino, Shelby Vredik, Pipe Morelli and Nick Short — were all part of a larger group of friends that jammed and partied together often. Seven years later, the band have released their third LP with Mint Records, Pray 4 Tomorrow — self-recorded at Choms, a studio co-owned by Short and Rossino. Dumb has toured extensively in North America and Europe, played with Wolf Parade and Dilly Dally, and are known for their catchy punk rhythms, squealing guitar feedback, and strongly spoken lyrics.” I like their brand of Post-Punk...proving that this genre never really dies as long as we're all disaffected and pissed. | 0:30:40 (Pop-up)
Smirk, Sean Powell | Heathen Means | Material | Feel It Records | 2022 | Ten tracks of tangled, anxious but melodic bedroom punk, Material is the latest from Smirk, the solo project of Los Angeles guitarist Nick Vicario (Public Eye, Crisis Man). The followup to two 2021 releases, the album typifies the punchy, lo-fi aesthetic of the Feel It roster, while embracing both ‘70s-flavored rock guitar jams and the jittery new wave of the early ‘80s. They’re pop songs, but with a pensive, angsty subtext. | 0:33:33 (Pop-up)

Bag of Cans | Pub Money | Pub Money Single | Fierce Panda | 2022 | Bag Of Cans first formed back in 2017 in the East Anglian city of Norfolk, since then the band have become known for riotous live shows and a fusion of sleazy indie with tasty licks. “A gloriously surreal mix of old school indie, Weimar Berlin cabaret and the Kinks circa Village Green Preservation Society.” | 0:38:28 (Pop-up)

"Port Sulphur : In contrast to the methodology deployed on the first album, ‘Speed Of Life’ features no collaborations or vocals, the instrumental pieces were recorded by Douglas MacIntyre, Paul Turnbull and Samuel Joseph Smith (at the later’s Green Door studios in Glasgow). The album was constructed using ‘automatic’ writing and recording techniques based on an reimagined soundtrack for Andrei Tarkovsky’s film, ‘Nostalghia’. Photographer Gavin Fraser and film director Grant McPhee were very much part of the ‘Speed Of Life’ team. Speed Of Life features 10 tracks, all of which were cut live before being reconstructed by editing, in much the same way that Can and Harmonia shaped their music." |

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band | The Sun Is Down! | Between My Head And The Sky | Chimera Music | 2009 | "Between My Head and the Sky is an album by Yoko Ono's band Plastic Ono Band released on Chimera Music in September 2009. It is her first studio album to be released as "Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band" since 1973's Feeling the Space. This Plastic Ono Band lineup featured Cornelius, Yuka Honda (of Cibo Matto fame), and Ono's son Sean Lennon as band leader and producer." /// Personnel: Yoko Ono – vocals /// Sean Lennon – acoustic and electric guitars, piano, keyboards, bass guitar, drums, percussion /// Keigo Oyamada – guitars, bass guitar, Tenorion, programming, percussion /// Hirotaka Shimizu – guitars, percussion /// Yuko Araki – drums, percussion /// Shahzad Ismaily – guitars, bass guitar, drums, percussion /// Yuka Honda – Pro-tools editing, sampler, e. piano, organ, percussion /// Michael Leonhart – trumpet, vibraphone, percussion /// Erik Friedlander – cello /// Daniel Carter – tenor saxophone, flute /// Indigo Street – guitar /// Between My Head and the Sky Review by Thom Jurek [--Excerpt--] "She's really back; one of the most gloriously influential and notorious women in the history of rock has returned with a new album at the age of 76, and thank goodness. With Between My Head and the Sky, Yoko Ono has courageously and outrageously revived the Plastic Ono Band moniker; a group she and husband John Lennon formed together; only this time, instead of the late John, it's with the couple's son Sean Lennon. Audacious? Oh yeah, but wait until you hear it! On 2007's Yes, I'm a Witch, Ono gave a bunch of her old tracks to artists like J. Spaceman, Chan Marshall, DJ Spooky, and the Flaming Lips, to name a few, and re-recorded them. This time out, she surrounded herself with New York studio players, Sean's own band, and guests such as Yuka Honda from Cibo Matto, and members of Cornelius. The end result is a stunning collection of 16 wildly diverse tracks that were written in six days and recorded very quickly. The centerpiece is an electronic-cum-acid rock spoken word peace called "The Sun Is Down," with screaming guitars, crisscrossing beats and breaks, and Honda offering sung vocal support drifting entrancingly in the backdrop..." | 1:32:14 (Pop-up)
Phew | Our Likeness | Our Likeness | Mute | 1992 / 2023 | In confusing reissue news, Bandcamp made this look like a new Phew thing, released just shortly ago (11/28/2022), from a forthcoming Feb 17, 2023 album. It really does end abruptly on Bandcamp, even if you buy the full digital track... But streaming services reveal that this album is from 1992 & have the track in full 3:52 form; rather than chopped after 2:25 min. "Phew's career began in the 70s fronting trailblazing Osaka punk group Aunt Sally (who released one album on Vanity Records in 1979). Ryuichi Sakamoto produced Phew's first solo release in 1980 and in 1981 Pass Records issued her debut LP, a classic featuring H. Czukay and J. Liebezeit of Can, and Conny Plank. She’s since collaborated with members of DAF, Neubauten, The Raincoats and more." Phew (Bandcamp) | * | 1:37:00 (Pop-up) |

This is by Siouxsie Sioux and Brian Reizell. "Love Crime is a song by Siouxsie. Her first release in eight years, it was featured in the finale of the TV series Hannibal, broadcast in August 2015... The song was made available for digital download on 4 December 2015, titled as "Love Crime (Amuse-Bouche Version)". "Love Crime" (retitled "Love Crime from the Wrath of the Lamb") was included on Hannibal Season 3 – Volume 2 (Original Television Soundtrack), which was issued by Lakeshore Records in digital format on 11 December 2015, and on CD in January 2016. P.E | Contradiction Of Wants | The Leather Lemon | Wharf Cat Records | 2022 | P.E., a band born of the city's art-punk underground and dedicated to freaky experimentation. Comprising Veronica Torres, Jonathan Campolo, and Benjamin Jaffe (all of the beloved and freshly defunct Pill) alongside Jonathan Schenke and Robert Jones of the electronic/art-rock favorite Eaters, P.E. features some of NYC's most notable experimental voices. Early shows were entirely improvisational, allowing the group to develop a collaborative chemistry that led to an equally free-form recording process. Spacemoth | Pipe and Pistol | No Past No Future | Wax Nine Records | 2022 | No Past No Future is the debut album of psychedelic, space-pop artist Spacemoth. As Spacemoth's Maryam Qudus was hard at work in her recording studio, synthesizers piled high, she found her mind in another place, hypnotized by the questions swirling inside her: “How could I ever face this world alone?” she wondered. “How long will I be able to stay in this place that I love?” Attempting to understand her position in the universe, the relationships that hold her together, and the climate crisis unfolding around her, she realized ruminating over these concerns was paradoxically taking her away from precious experiences. No Past No Future is the reckoning point between nostalgia and nihilism: the struggle to hang on to a moment as it warps in time. | 2:03:36 (Pop-up) |
