The Ex + Tom Cora | 1993 | Scrabbling At The Lock | On this track: Cello – Tom Cora / Guitar, Drums, Bass, Accordion, Voice – Andy, G.W.Sok, Katrin, Luc, Terrie / Music By – The Ex + Tom Cora // Producer – Dolf, The Ex, Tom Cora / Sounds [Sound-scrapes] – Jeroen / Vocal Improvisations – Catherine Jauniaux / Words By – The Ex + Tom Cora /// A fair amount of DaDa and DoDo on this track. It both annoys the shit out of me & earworms me, at the same time. A love/hate relationship, have I, with this one. Mostly love. Everything The Ex do is ex-cellent. Somehow I've misplaced all my copies of this. It's one of my absolute favourite albums. I highly recommend misplacing most of your favourite things. Lend them out. Elastica | Da Da Da | The Radio One Sessions | Strange Fruit/BBC Music | 2001 | John Peel Session 22/9/99 -- Engineer – Nick Fountain // Producer – James Birtwistle // Written-By – Krawinkel, Remmler // Featuring the return of Annie Holland on bass, during the time of Dave Bush (first project after the end of his tenure as the keyboardist in The Fall.) There were multiple reports that Elastica had tried to entice Craig Scanlon (longtime Fall ex-guitarist) into their group at this time. It never happened, though Mark E. Smith and Julia Nagle did contribute to a couple of tracks around this time. -- Yer Fall trivia of the day. -- This song was originally by Trio. | 0:06:43 (Pop-up)

Once again, we ask... is this our dada show? Probably not. But just in case... ""Da Da Da I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha" (usually shortened to "Da Da Da") is a song by the German band Trio. Trio was formed in 1980 by Stephan Remmler, Gert "Kralle" Krawinkel and Peter Behrens. Released as a single in 1982 and featured on their 1981 self-titled debut album, "Da Da Da" became a hit in Germany and about 30 other countries, selling 13 million copies worldwide. The lyrics were written by Remmler, the music by Krawinkel. "Da Da Da" remains the band's biggest German hit and their only hit outside Germany." |

Starter | Part Of You | Starter | Repetoire Records | 1982 | STARTER was a minimal electronic/synthpop group from Switzerland, formed in 1980 by vocalist and fashion designer Francis Foss, Claudine Chirac (from fellow Swiss Wave group Grauzone) and Jet Harbour. STARTER began in the city of Bern when Francis, Claudine and Jet decided to create their own brand of New Wave music inspired by Gary Numan and Kraftwerk. They released their debut, self-titled album STARTER in the summer of 1981 on Repertoire Records in Germany. Using early analog Roland and Korg synthesizers, STARTER’S music seamlessly merges wistful electronics from Germany’s Neue Deutsche Welle movement and powerful vocal stylings from French Chanson. Alongside their Swiss Wave contemporaries like Grauzone, Yello, Liliputt/Kleenex, STARTER created a new brand of hallucinatory ‘Techno-Pop’ made up of chopped rhythms, energetic and almost epileptic vocals that are immediately catchy and hypnotic, perfect for the dance-floor. That being said...this song is really fucking creepy. | 0:16:42 (Pop-up)
Polyphonic Size | Mother's Little Helper | Mother's Little Helper 12" | Enimga | 1982 | Polyphonic Size is a Belgian new wave band founded in 1979 in Brussels by Roger-Marc Vande Voorde. Mixing electric guitars and synthesizers with French and English lyrics (and sometimes German or Japanese lyrics), most of Polyphonic Size records were produced by Jean-Jacques Burnel, from The Stranglers. Although Polyphonic Size and JJ Burnel were very close to each other, the band always kept his own personality, less dark, more European, than the Stranglers. On April 3, 1981 Polyphonic Size gave their very first concert at the First Belgian Rhythm Box Contest, in Brussels. | 0:21:09 (Pop-up)
Liaisons Dangereuses | Etre Assis Ou Danser | Liaisons Dangereuses | TIS | 1981 | Liaisons Dangereuses was founded by Beate Bartel and Chrislo Haas together with vocalist Krishna Goineau in Düsseldorf, West Germany in 1981. Before the Liaisons Dangereuses trio, Chrislo Haas and Beate Bartel were in duo named CHBB. After recording four ten-minute cassettes, they released their sole album in 1981. The self-titled album was mixed at Conny Plank's studio in Cologne. The group made several live appearances throughout 1981 and 1982 and were occasionally joined by Anita Lane and Hideto Sasaki. The album carried the single "Los Niños del Parque" that displayed a "step-sequenced" style that became an underground hit and has been cited by many prominent Chicago house and Detroit techno DJs as a crucial influence. Liaisons Dangereuses inspired the naming of an underground dance and "electro" music program on Antwerp SIS radio (103.9 FM) presented by Sven Van Hees[3] that became notable during the rise of AB music and New Beat during the late 1980s.[ | 0:24:10 (Pop-up)
Danton's Voice | I Hear The Bells | The Hidden Tapes Compilation | Minimal Wave | 2011 | Dirk Desaever, the man behind White House White, A Thunder Orchestra, and Danton's Voice. Danton's Voice is his solo project during the mid to late 80s, making music with genres like EBM, New Beat and Minimal. His sense of dramaturgy, his sound design, rhythmic patterns, and use of film samples create a dark and mysterious ambiance. | 0:27:36 (Pop-up)
Cabaret Voltaire | Spread The Virus | Red Mecca | Rough Trade | 1981 | While touring the USA in November 1979, Cabaret Voltaire became strongly interested in the rise of the Christian right and its use of television, especially the fund-raising broadcasts of TV evangelist Eugene Scott. They compared this to the rise of Islamism, devoting a side to each strand of religious politics on their 1980 mini-album Three Mantras. Red Mecca was a culmination of this interest. According to Richard H. Kirk: "The whole Afghanistan situation was kicking off, Iran had the American hostages [...] we were taking notice [...] it's not called [Red Mecca] by coincidence. We weren't referencing the fucking Mecca Ballroom in Nottingham!" Red Mecca was recorded at Western Works, Sheffield in May 1981, reached the UK top independent music charts. It is hailed by many as their best album. The Cabaret Voltaire. Under this name a group of young artists and writers has formed with the object of becoming a center for artistic entertainment. In principle, the Cabaret will be run by artists, permanent guests, who, following their daily reunions, will give musical or literary performances. Young Zürich artists, of all tendencies, are invited to join us with suggestions and proposals. The cabaret featured spoken word, dance and music. The soirees were often raucous events with artists experimenting with new forms of performance, such as sound poetry and simultaneous poetry. Mirroring the maelstrom of World War I raging around it, the art it exhibited was often chaotic and brutal. On at least one occasion, the audience attacked the cabaret's stage. Though the cabaret was to be the birthplace of the Dadaist movement, it featured artists from every sector of the avant-garde, including Futurism's Marinetti. The cabaret exhibited radically experimental artists, many of whom went on to change the face of their artistic disciplines; featured artists included Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Giorgio de Chirico, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, and Max Ernst. | 0:32:59 (Pop-up)

Sick Thoughts | Wake Up Drunk | Heaven Is No Fun | Total Punk | 2022 | Released September 9, 2022 "By 2016 a teenage Drew Owen had put himself on everyone's radar releasing a whopping 19 records (and that was just under the Sick Thought moniker) on pretty much every punk label that mattered over a span of three years. At the time I thought of him as a teenage novelty, an endearing sometimes pesky younger punk sibling who I kept telling "NO YOU PUT OUT WAY TOO MUCH STUFF." However in 2016 Drew sent me what became the "18 & Free" single and had me eating my words, eagerly releasing a single for the kid I kept telling never. Now its 2022 and SICK THOUGHTS are back on TOTAL PUNK with a brand new LP. Drew has proven himself far more than a novelty and here I am eagerly footing the bill again. The shitty attitude is still intact and the songs are still about breaking stuff but the ramshackle production and rough edged tunes of early Sick Thoughts are gone. 13 scorching riff heavy tracks that run the gambit from Stiv fueled Power Pop to ‘Cherie Love Affair’ style Sleaze Rock all masterfully recorded by Drew and Michael Hohan with Drew playing all the instruments. Great music for licking knives or lighting your wallet on fire. Nasty, catchy as fuck, and 100% TOTAL PUNK!!! Alien Nose Job | RnR Rubbish Bin | Stained Glass | Total Punk | 2022 | Released November 25, 2022. "Much loved, relentless rocker, Jake Robertson is back yet again with the next instalment of his ridiculously productive solo project, Alien Nosejob. The bulk (backing tracks) of Stained Glass were recorded by Mix Master Mikey (Young), over a Friday / Saturday in October last year - but by the sounds of it they spent just as much time eating Guzmen y Gomez, talking shit and hanging out as they did recording. Jake took the beds for the eight tracks home, tucked their sheets in tightly and the record was complete before years end. Some may think it’s a touch too much, some might shoot him down in flames, but I say this rock ’n’ roll singer’s got rhythm. Stained Glass is out November 25th through Anti Fade Records in Australia and Total Punk in the USA." The Fall | Sten Gun Rock | 1970s: Disc 5: Live, North West Arts, Manchester, 25 May 1977 | Cherry Red Records | 1977 / 2022 | Newly released archive! A 12-CD set of all their work in the 70's & which features eight live shows, including this one... "A recording of what is thought to be the band’s first ever gig – these shows showcase the very earliest version of the Fall in full effect, raw and uncompromising." In all my years of rabid Fall fandom, I had never heard this song prior to last week. You can barely hear Mark E. Smith, but it's fascinating hearing them in their earliest phase, truly struggling to play their songs, as is the true D.I.Y. punk ethos... Start, don't worry about it, keep going, keep at it... | * | 0:57:06 (Pop-up) |
ZACHT AUTOMAAT | Honey Party | P is for Progress | Idée Fixe Records | 2022 | Released August 5, 2022 "Carrying on the themes of 2016’s Normality Bias and 2018’s Memory of the World, namely society’s apparent willful blindness to uncomfortable truths, P is for Progress documents the last sessions in which Zacht Automaat were able to share the same physical space. From the pumping piano that gives way to dueling fuzz and swelling organ in Bite The Invisible Hand to the blown out and unhinged paranoia of I Know Bill Gates, the band offer multiple psychoacoustically engineered forays into psych and prog. Later the hypnotizing ode to a rescued console organ, Cascading Mabel, resets the mood by introducing the damaged jazz and sideways swing of the album’s final numbers: A Dog on a Journey, A Dog in the Rain and Put the World in a Plastic Bag." "Carl expands on the group's inspiration: “A lot of our music is about the chaotic nature of modern existence. Since it is instrumental, you will have to take our word for it. P is for Progress ups the song quotient and makes more nods to glam and rock than in the past, while still taking long sonic digressions.” Fusing diverse influences such as Pharaoh Sanders, The Fall, Nina Simone, Canterbury prog and classical, the duo create a sonically kaleidoscopic instrumental wonder rendered in a euphoric haze of odd order harmonics and tape compression." "Zacht Automaat, which in Dutch loosely translates to Soft Machine, are the duo of Carl Didur and Mike McLean. They first met when Mike accepted an invitation to join Didur’s earliest band Cedrumatic and McLean made an immediate impression. Recalling his first encounter with Mike and his companion Arp Odyssey, Carl states “He had more knobs and could lean at the coolest angle, like he was flying a spaceship into the sun, while playing one single note, forever. This wild character was Michael John McLean and we have now been making music together for 23 years.” Soon afterward Cedrumatic morphed into a new band, The Battleship, Ethel, which was originally formed to open for Damo Suzuki of CAN in Hamilton in 2001. The band toured around Ontario and into Quebec until 2009, morphing from Cluster-drone to Hawkwind space-metal and finally to a Canterbury-influenced power trio with McLean moving to bass. During their lifespan The Battleship, Ethel toured as Suzuki’s backing band and welcomed a number of psych legends on stage including Dave Byers (Simply Saucer) and Bob Bryden (Spirit Of Christmas). As the band unceremoniously fell apart after years of evading official documentation, Carl and Mike would enter the next decade as Zacht Automaat and in a burst of unbridled creativity would record eight records in 2010 alone." Virna Lindt | Attention Stockholm | Attention Stockholm 7" | The Compact Organization | 1981 | Virna Lindt is a Swedish singer and record producer. Her debut single "Attention Stockholm" became an indie-chart hit in 1982. She released two studio albums, Shiver in 1983 and Play/Record in 1985, both on the Compact Organization label. Both collaborations with writer/producer/arranger Tot Taylor.[1] Combining pop, soundtrack and experimental influences, they have since been reissued on CD by LTM. Her style has been described as "John Barry-meets-new wave". After a long hiatus, Lindt returned to music in 2019 with the release "Avant-garde Pts 1 & 2," and in 2021 with the single "Once." I am smitten by this song and fascinated by this artist. | 1:13:19 (Pop-up)
Current Rage | Waikiki | Seven Songs EP | Entertainment On Disc | 1982 | Current Rage were one of the more obscure groups to come out of the Athens, GA scene in the early 80s – but they've also got all the instantly creative energy that made that short-lived world of music every bit as exciting as some of the best New York sounds at the time! There's a nicely choppy approach to the rhythms going on here, and plenty of strong guitar play too – deft music that's somewhere in the territory of Pylon, and like that group, maybe a warmer US answer to British post-punk sounds of the same time... | 1:17:13 (Pop-up)
Kate Fagan | I Don't Wanna Be Too Cool | Waiting for the Crisis/I Don't Wanna Be Too Cool (7-inch single) | Disturbing Records | 1981 | Before she was opening shows for The Clash and The English Beat as the founder/ frontwoman of long-running Chicago ska trailblazers Heavy Manners, Kate Fagan released the cult new wave single I Don’t Wanna Be Too Cool on the tiny local imprint Disturbing Records. Kate wrote the title track after moving to Chicago from New York in the late 70’s. “I pretty much came to visit Chicago and fell in love with the scene and never left,” remembers Fagan. “At the time I’d been working at New York magazine and was getting dismayed watching the CBGB scene give way to the whole Studio 54/velvet rope thing. So I spontaneously moved to Chicago, which was much more inclusive and everyone wasn’t standing around peering at each other from behind their shades. But eventually I saw that same kind of divisive hipster culture start to creep in. ‘Too Cool’ was my reaction to that.” | 1:19:45 (Pop-up)
Chrome | Electric Chair | Red Exposure | Beggar's Banquet | 1980 | Chrome was founded in San Francisco in 1976 by musician Damon Edge and associated with the 1970s post-punk movement. The group's raw sound blended elements of punk, psychedelia, and early industrial music, incorporating science-fiction themes, tape experimentation, distorted acid rock guitar, and electronic noise. They have been cited as forerunners of the 1980s industrial music boom. By the time Red Exposure was released, Chrome consisted solely of Edge and Creed. The album marked a move away from the more frenetic style of the two previous albums, with more use of drum machines and synthesizers. They are so, so underrated. With Cherry and bassist Johnny Dyani he toured US and Europe in 1971. In 1972, he founded the band Xaba with Dyani and trumpeter Mongezi Feza. Plus Instruments | Special (original mix) | Bodies | Emotional Rescue | 2015 | Emotional Rescue do us another big favour with this compilation/reissue of rare and sought-after New Wave aces. Plus Instruments (a.k.a. + Instruments) was an early vehicle for Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, who was joined by a gang of '80s downtown New Yorkers including their vocal locus, Truus De Groot to forge a virulent sort of wave disco sound over a handful of singles and compilation appearances between 1981-1984. These are their best songs, including the hypnotic walking bass and alluring lyrics of 'Bodies', also included in a really trippy unreleased mix, beside the disco-not-disco punk-funk brilliance of 'Special' and the killller bass lick of 'Deutsche Frau'. Wire | Our Swimmer (Single Version) | Our Swimmer 7" | Rough Trade | 1979 | Our Swimmer was one from the vault but it rates with their very best material. Originally recorded in 1979, it did not see the light of day until 1981, when Rough Trade released it on a 7 inch single. That throbbing sexy bass is the key to the success of this track; it grounds the squealing funk-via-PiL guitars and an arty lyric. It is what makes this viscerally appealing instead of merely clever. | 2:01:56 (Pop-up) |
