Pigface  Closer to Heaven (Featuring Keith Levene)   Favoriting Easy Listening...  Underground, Inc., Invisible, Caroline Distribution  2003  "(Featuring Atkins & Levene) This surprise collaboration came about after Martin Atkins decided to contact Keith Levene via email in Autumn 2002 in a bid to try "bury the hatchet and move on". They had not spoken in 20 years. After some cagey initial responses Atkins asked Levene if he would be interested in playing on a track for the forthcoming Pigface album. Atkins then supplied a backing track which Levene played on and sent back. Unfortunately Levene's contribution isn't prominent and he even admitted: "I can't hear the fucking thing!" Atkins later confirmed that he did use the contribution and explained: ""Naaaaaa, it's in there. I liked it so much I had some sitar laid down with it and the result is a combination of the two. I was thinking about using another earlier mix or re-mixing the track so it's more stripped down. It felt great to hear Keith's unique guitars again. Maybe I second guessed myself and heard it in my head louder than it is on the track, know what I mean?" Levene played 12 string guitar on the track, and later stated he based his contribution on the Beatles 'We the Love We Knew' which he "couldn't help" playing when he heard Atkins backing track. Levene later included the original unmixed version on a (commercially unreleased) MurderGlobal pre-release CD; re-titled as the 'The Love We NEW'. Atkins also released several mixes and remixes of the 'Easy Listening For Difficult Fuckheads' album: including variations of 'Closer to Heaven'. One at least must surely feature Levene's contribution? Of course, this wasn't the first (and probably last) time that Atkins had worked with former PiL members; 2002 saw him team up with Wobble for the critically acclaimed Damage Manual. After this Pigface collaboration Levene and Atkins discussed working on an album project (working title 'Titanium Box') however, it never went ahead."    0:04:45 (Pop-up)

Second Edition / Metal Box

1979

"The departure of Jim Walker made way for a series of new drummers. Auditions were later held at Rollerball Studios in Tooley Street, London Bridge. David Humphrey was their second drummer, who went on to record two tracks at Manor Studios in Oxford, "Swan Lake" and "Albatross", for Metal Box. "Death Disco" (a.k.a. "Swan Lake") was released as a single in 1979 and reached No. 20 in the charts. The majority of the drumming on the album was provided by Richard Dudanski (formerly of the 101ers), PiL's drummer from April to September 1979. He was replaced by Karl Burns (formerly and latterly of the Fall). Following sessions took place in which Martin Atkins would show up for an 'audition' and discover himself in the middle of a recording session with the tape rolling. The recording was released on Metal Box as "Bad Baby". Atkins was PiL's drummer from 1979 to 1980 and 1982 to 1985. Metal Box was originally released as three untitled 45-rpm 12-inch (30-cm) records packaged in a metal box resembling a film canister with an embossed PiL logo on the lid (it was later reissued in more conventional packaging as a double LP set, Second Edition), and features the band's trademark hypnotic dub reggae bass lines, glassy, arpeggiated guitar, and bleak, paranoid, stream of consciousness vocals. Metal Box is starker than First Issue, more spread out and uncompromising, and scattered with bits of ambient synthesiser. The design for Metal Box was the brainchild of Dennis Morris."

King Richard's Fluegel Nights  Everybody Loves My Baby   Favoriting Everybody Loves My Baby 7"  MTA Records  1968  Between 1966 and 1969, King Richard’s Fluegel Knights scored six hit singles on the AC chart. This was a golden era for pop instrumentals; the woods were full of orchestras and combos and groups and agglomerations doing light-n-jazzy versions of standards and covering the top hits of the day. That was Richard (Dick) Behrke’s gig; he recorded at least three albums with collaborator Bob Thompson which frequently featured, as you might guess, the flugelhorn. We discovered this catchy tune when we were recommended to watch "Celebrity Bowling". It's a show that aired from 1971 to 1978 and is exactly as described. It is a vintage nerd's dream, with prizes from Broyhill recliners to Rice A Roni and featured guests like Charles Nelson Reilly, Roy Rogers, The Lemon Sisters, and the cast of the Brady Bunch. You can watch it on Youtube and yes it will change your life.    0:16:44 (Pop-up)
The Go! Team feat. The Star Feminine Band  Look Away, Look Away   Favoriting Look Away, Look Away Single  Memphis Industries  2022  The Go! Team Leader Ian Parton explains how the collaboration with the Star Femimnie Band came about. “They’re a group of girls between the ages of 12 and 19, and were formed by the father of two of the girls in the group who was hoping to inspire change in the way women and girls were treated in Benin.” “I got in touch and a day later we were on Zoom with me in Brighton and the band in Natitingou in Benin. A month later a team travelled from the capital of Benin to their hometown with a mobile sound recording setup to record their vocals, with the lyrics written by the band in French. They gave it a charging, all-out gang vocal that I wasn’t expecting but really love.”  *   0:18:36 (Pop-up)
Inner City Unit  God Disco   Favoriting Punkadelic  Flicnife Records  1982  Inner City Unit were a London based popular music group active from 1979 through to 1985, their music style encompassing psychedelia and punk rock. Says the Trouser Press: "If you can accept the notion that Hawkwind was the original punk-psychedelic-heavy-metal-dada fusion band, then it makes perfect sense that saxophonist Nik Turner should lead the humorous Inner City Unit, a devolving London five-piece whose music is so far over the edge that it almost defies comprehension."    0:22:20 (Pop-up)
The Cool Greenhouse  Musicians   Favoriting Sod's Toastie  Melodic  2022  TFEB favourites The Cool Greenhouse have released their new full length, and this song features Tom Greenhouse lamenting how hard it is to find bandmates. Greenhouse is a new form of Mark E. Smith, with a similar sense of the absurd, less angry, more world weary. An excellent second LP by the wittily droll wordsmith Tom Greenhouse and band, bringing oodles of hilarious, oddball short stories and killer lines about the absurdity of life, backed by strangely wonderful post-punk and electronica. We love them.  *   0:25:27 (Pop-up)

The Fall  50 Year Old Man   Favoriting Imperial Wax Solvent [Expanded]  Sanctuary / Cherry Red / Fall Sound Archive  2008 / 2020  Just as Mark E Smith was turning 50, he was busy writing this song. I remember early versions in 2007, thinking at first it was a one-off live lark; then maybe a fun song that they'd kick around for a few shows and drop. Then in 2008 it would be the standout epic from the album that ushered in a new era of The Fall... Imperial Wax Solvent. This album would introduce what would become the most stable lineup The Fall had ever seen. How Steve Albini is in collusion with trains remains to be seen, but the lyrical ramblings and patchwork sonics of this song represented another high-water mark into the belt of The Fall. I could (and will try to) listen to every version of this song that I can find, possibly back-to-back. From The Annotated Fall website: "Steve Albini is a recording engineer (he's often listed as a "producer," but according to Dan "Albini describes himself as an recording engineer, and is very articulate on the question of what a producer is and why he isn't one") who has famouslty worked with NIrvana, the Pixies, Manic Street Preachers, Cheap Trick, PJ Harvey, and many others. MES mentioned Albini in an interview with SLUG Magazine in 2005: /// SLUG: I had to laugh back in the late 80s and early 90s when you were doing more electronic stuff; there was a backlash among the supposedly cool people here, like, 'The Fall sells out.' /// MES: Yeah, [Steve] Albini and all that bull ... you know he wanted to do the new LP? /// SLUG: That might be interesting from a production standpoint. /// MES: Oh, fuck off. /// SLUG: Who produces you now? /// MES: Me." ////////// The Annotated Fall: 50 Year Old Man    0:38:30 (Pop-up)
The Fall  50 Year Old Man [Britannia Row Recording]   Favoriting Imperial Wax Solvent [Expanded - Britannia Row Recordings 21/9/07 disc]  Sanctuary / Cherry Red / Fall Sound Archive  2008 / 2020  I love it when a demo reveals a plethora of new lyrics, passages & approaches. The Fall  Inferior Product Man [Britannia Row Recording]   Favoriting Imperial Wax Solvent [Expanded]  Sanctuary / Cherry Red / Fall Sound Archive  2008 / 2020  In its infancy, it seems this stood alone from 50 Year Old Man, later to be integrated into the main take of the studio take. Keen Fall observers will likely notice there is a self-reference to "No Xmas For John Quays" in this version. A fitting fade out.    0:56:16 (Pop-up)

Phil & The Tiles  Elixir   Favoriting Phil & The Tiles EP  Anti-Fade Records  2022  Phil and the Tiles formed in a Moorabbin shed, late 2019 in Melbourne’s South East; a stripped back glitter-group playing modified pop, stuck together like sticky tape and PVA glue. Phil’s upfront with colourful ramblings, while The Tiles lay the backing down firm. Sound references may include punk staples like Magazine and The Fall, alongside modern day classics such as early UV Race, Institute, even at times, Country Teasers. Whirling, questioning ,trembling, searing and starry eyed, Phil & The Tiles draw their own line by perverse lamentations, friendships lost and found, catholic frustration and factory life repression. Pretty Happy  Boots   Favoriting Boots Single  Foggy Notions  2022  Pretty Happy are back! Their music disappeared from streaming services and not all has returned but this is a musical gift. There's a shift in their sound, still playful but heavier than before. The EP Echo Boy, produced by John 'Spud' Murphy, references the Echo Boy statue in Cork City by sculptor Barry Maloney, which commemorates the paperboy street sellers of the Evening Echo newspaper. The statue can be seen on the cover art. Last summer, Pretty Happy supported the iconic Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth across Europe and the UK, and made various festival appearances including Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Raw Power weekender in London, All Together Now, Electric Picnic, and Other Voices in Cork.  *   2:07:35 (Pop-up)

Nik Turner  Out Of Control   Favoriting The Final Frontier  Purple Pyramid  2019  In hindsight, it may have been obvious, but when UK Subs’ Nicky Garratt first linked up with cosmic-weirdo Nik Turner (ex-Hawkwind, but somehow, always the spirit of the band) it was unexpected. What was the first wave punk rocker doing with the the hippiest of all space-rockers? Well, as we all know now, pretty much all the first and second wave punkers were mega-Hawk fans- Jello, Captain Sensible, John Lydon, Rollins, etc etc etc. Their first collab record, 2013’s Space Gypsy was one of the great “what ifs” in punkdom come to life- “what if Nik Turner linked up with a punker and they cut an album of Hawkwind music, but with the speed and power of punk rock?” Of course, the results were excellent. This is where Turner thrives. Even when he was a young man, he had a sort of wizened, all-knowing perspective. His voice still has that trademark ghostliness to it, but around the edges, you can hear the wear of a billion warp-trips. It adds to his cosmic proclamations here making him seem sort of like a trans-temporal Odin or prophet from the edge of time. And more importantly, he’s having fun. Where some other Hawk-spinoff bands have either become self-aware regarding the topic of their music, or have even essentially succumbed to self-parody, Turner seems to be ever-exploring his repertoire and is as engaged here as he was on “Master of the Universe.”    2:16:22 (Pop-up)

Ladytron  City of Angels   Favoriting Misery Remember Me/City of Angels  Cooking Vinyl Limited  2022  Ladytron are back with a single that is something that harkens back to the early days. The new album’s first single “City of Angels” is an optimistic, dynamic electronic track with rich, industrial textures and utopian, shoegaze melodies. “It’s about forgetting...how fragile it is…not about one particular place or other, but a merging of them,” Daniel Hunt says of “City of Angels.”  *   2:34:39 (Pop-up)
Egzotikka & Shaknis  Tu Pasakei   Favoriting Pries Akis Single  Raw Culture  2022  "Pries Akis" / "In Front of Your Eyes" EP was born between two producers from different backgrounds with similar tastes. Electro producer Shaknis inspired the early ideas of the EP using his analog equipment, creating a solid foundation for Egzotikka. A Cold Wave producer, guitarist, and songwriter formed the identity of this new analog post-punkish-sounding EP. 80's instruments such as classic Roland drums, Polivox, and Fender guitars were used to create the modern Lo-fi sound filled with lyrics about narcissism, toxic relationships, and super-ego driven by a strong belief in a fucked up society. This EP was recorded during the spring of 2022 in London, UK, and Šiauliai, Lithuania.    2:39:21 (Pop-up)

Written on the tape were the words, "Elevator Music".  *   2:43:24 (Pop-up)

Yin & Yang

Cherry Red Records

2012

"Yin & Yang is a ten-song, 40-minute adventure in loopy, raw, deep dread dub, psychedelia, and post-Miles Davis-esque space jazz that's well worth your time. For starters, Levene is in excellent form. His trademark style has re-emerged as open, nasty, oblique, and sharp. Wobble's chops have been steadily polished over the years. His sense of musical adventure has occasionally proven a detriment, but that only happens once here. The highlights are numerous, beginning with plodding thud of the title track that opens the album. Simply utilizing one repetitive riff with a bridge providing an outro makes it sound like the entry point into a long jam, as Levene wails away under Wobble's dubwise thrum. Jonas Persson's basic drum kit only adds to the aural hypnosis... ...The last two cuts, "Understand and "Understand Dub," can be seen as a single, seven-minute jam of spliff-laden, nocturnal, rippling, edgy dreadwise dub... "

The Clash  Midnight To Stevens   Favoriting Combat Rock / The People's Hall (Reissue)  Epic  1982 /2022  It's amazing that the band all forgot about recording this song. It lay for years, unreleased, until the 1991 "Clash On Broadway" boxset... And now it is gloriously brought to full, vivid life, on this excellent reissue/remastered version of Combat Rock.  *

But I should revisit it. haven't heard it in yeeeeears
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm

That is very interesting! And definitely worth revisiting with hindsight. I find it fascinating to listen to certain albums that way, when it comes to alternate versions....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm

I love both albums. And both albums have songs exclusive to the one and not the other. To me, it's more of all the things I love, not less, so I'll happily take different "versions"!
