Today: Subways and surveillance - with Christopher Robbins from Hell Gate
In New York City, MetroCards are being phased out in favor of a smartphone-scanning system called OMNY, which tracks the identity, location, and travel habits of every passenger of New York's subways and buses. Christopher Robbins from Hell Gate discusses his "privacy guide to OMNY" - and why we should be skeptical about subway surveillance.
• Christopher Robbins at Hell Gate
• A Basic Privacy Guide to OMNY, the MTA’s MetroCard Replacement (by Christopher Robbins in Hell Gate, Sep 9, 2022): “Welcome to the PanOMNYcon.”
• New York City Subway System to Install Security Cameras in Train Cars (NYT, Sep 20, 2022): “Gov. Kathy Hochul said Tuesday that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority would install two security cameras on every car to lure back people frightened of crime . . . ‘You think Big Brother is watching you on the subway?’ Gov. Kathy Hochul said at a news conference in a Queens subway yard. ‘You’re absolutely right. That is our intent: to get the message out that we’re going to be having surveillance of activity on the subway trains, and that’s going to give people great ease of mind.’”
• Press conference at the MTA Corona Maintenance Facility with Gov. Kathy Hochul (Sep 20, 2022)
• Morgan Stanley Allows Its Clients’ Social Security Numbers to Get Auctioned on Hard Drives (Wall Street on Parade, Sep 21, 2022): "That’s pretty astonishing in itself: Being lectured on the competent handling of personal client information by someone buying hardware at an online auction site when you are a Global Systemically Important Bank with $1.17 trillion in assets and more than a century of existence. According to the SEC, the “vast majority of the hard drives from the 2016 Data Center Decommissioning remain missing” and in July 2020 Morgan Stanley Smith Barney had to notify “approximately 15 million impacted customers” that their personal data might be floating around out there – unencrypted."
• A Dad Took Photos of His Naked Toddler for the Doctor. Google Flagged Him as a Criminal. (by Kashmir Hill, NYT, Aug 21, 2022): “After setting up a Gmail account in the mid-aughts, Mark, who is in his 40s, came to rely heavily on Google. He synced appointments with his wife on Google Calendar. His Android smartphone camera backed up his photos and videos to the Google cloud. He even had a phone plan with Google Fi.”
“Two days after taking the photos of his son, Mark’s phone made a blooping notification noise: His account had been disabled because of ‘harmful content’ that was ‘a severe violation of Google’s policies and might be illegal.’ A ‘learn more’ link led to a list of possible reasons, including ‘child sexual abuse & exploitation.’”

Also, went to a car wash the other day and they had a Ring doorbell surveillance camera set up at the pay kiosk.

A tax on your time to avoid surveillance. Because NYCers have so much free time.

I got my first metrocard in 1998. $67 (?) for 30days unlimited use. Now it’s $135 (?).

We're arguing over the wrong things here, though. The point is not to find a better way of letting people pay a private company for a necessary service. The point is to make transportation and right and a utility and make it free for all who need it. THAT's the only fight worth winning here. The rest is just finger-in-the-dike stuff.
