Every show starts with the ’70s! We’ll rediscover forgotten rockers, revisit unfairly maligned disco beats and replay power-pop favorites. Next: plenty of new releases, occasional live bands and more. Don’t let the nickname confuse you.

I'll admit it: in 1976 or '77, in thrall to punk rock, I sauntered into the Harvard Coop, a big department store in Harvard Square, made my way to the customized t-shirt department, and picked out a blank gold-colored shirt. I then selected the black block letters that I wanted to be heat-transferred onto that shirt: D-I-S-C-O S-U-C-K-S. Ultimately the shirt didn't get much use, though that was more because my Mom didn't care for the language. Fast forward a few years and I'm in New York City in the summertime, between semesters at NYU. I still love punk and its offshoots, but listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS has made me realize the folly of that t-shirt. Fast forward several more years and now every summer I start itching to play my favorite records from that era (give or take a few years) -- favorites I loved back then, and new favorites that I never heard back in the day. In that spirit, I'm excited to bring you the 14th annual Evan "Funk" Davies Show Disco/Dance Party! It's three hours of classic dance and disco jams from the '70s and early '80s, plus some lost shoulda-been-hits that just might become your new faves. Hook up the disco ball, pull your rug back and turn up the volume. Everybody's dancin', everybody's on the beat, and there ain’t no stoppin' us now! ======================================= Disco/dance disclaimer! I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" and "dance" as catch-all terms for my own take on fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s, expanding the boundaries (and sound) of the traditional disco era. Went to a Disco theme party/benefit for artists losing their Willyburg space 2000s???with a mandatory "Disco Attire" mandate and there was a tete-a-tete at the door amongst the gate keepers if my Haines hand made "Disco Sucks" shirt was acceptable and I got a pass.... "When I hear the word Disco ... I reach for my Haines and a Black Magic Marker.."

The almost complete lack of passive-aggressive family nonsense was perhaps the best part, given we were anticipating a lot of it. Followed closely by the paddle on the Pentwater River, I guess, and the dog's joy at feeling like a "tractor bro" while I was doing some chores.

No joke - I grew up in the 70s in Bay Ridge and the
Disco crowd used to jump out of their cars and beat people up at random -
calling them "hicks" for wearing corduroys and plain t shirts....
It was a fairly dangerous and unpleasant time at times around their discos ...

for some reason ??? The East side or the South side of most cities are often the roughest - that is a worldwide thing I have noticed in a lot of travels...
That is also a global thing as the South Hemisphere and the East tend to be poorer than the North and the West ???
A big generalization and no explanation, but it is my lived experience???

@MissGP: in that case, it's probably whatever dallas dive bar we're fuzzing up on any given friday or saturday night.
@clarke: the "maestro" of today has nothing to do with the maestro of yesteryear. a handful of really good replicas of the original maestro fuzz out there.

I thought there was something incongruous about the celebration of near nekkidness, drugs and hedonism that was Studio 54 getting some kind of Highlights media highlighting.
