Christiana | Hydrofield Of Myth | Hydrofield Of Myth | High School Champion | 2001 | When I saw the artwork Babs did for this week's show, this album/song immediately came to mind: Christiana Hydrofield of Myth -- Notes, originally published in Exclaim! magazine: By Chris Wodskou / Published Apr 01, 2001 --> "Re-christened Christiana after toiling the better part of a decade in the Toronto pop trenches, the guitar-pop troopers formerly known as Neck are back to shower anyone who'll listen with another clutch of shiny, spiky pop trinkets. They're still playing fast-tempo, shamelessly heartfelt pop, years after it was fashionable, if in fact it ever was fashionable, with a ringing guitar sound that I haven't heard nearly enough of since Unrest called it quits. But trends and fashion never seemed to have counted for much for the trio of Dave Rogers, Paul Boddum and Andrew McAllister, at least since their early days when their sound could have passed for a somewhat noisier take on swirly Britpop. But the main thing that strikes me about their current incarnation as Christiana is their purity of purpose. Nineteen songs that barely clock in at a cumulative half-hour - their pop is to be savoured and perhaps even lingered over, but they're not going to flog you with a good chord progression for more than a minute or two. Obviously, there's no flab on Hydrofield of Myth, but it's still a meaty helping. And even if you don't pay attention to the words, you feel at home with the sentiments of the songs, alluding as they do to about 35 years of both sunny and minor key pop and all its attendant emotions. A real labour of loveliness. (High School Champion)" | 0:02:03 (Pop-up)
Black Midi | Eat Men Eat | Hellfire | Rough Trade | 2022 | This song premiered yesterday. It is the second single from the third Black Midi album. It has an incredible video. "Musically, “Eat Men Eat” is a fusion of Rock and Flamenco, the latter being the working title found on early setlists. The lyrics, written by Picton, tell the story of a couple’s quest to overcome a militaristic Mine Captain cursed with an acid tongue as well as their own uncomfortable internal grumblings. The recording also features more than 50 fan submitted recordings layered into the end of the piece as well as palmas and various other percussive elements provided by Demi García Sabat. Its accompanying video was directed by Maxim Kelly." They will be touring the world extensively starting this Sunday Jun 19. Black Midi Tourdates | * | 0:04:06 (Pop-up) |
Moreish Idols | Hangar | Hangar (Digital Single) | Speedy Wunderground | 2022 | Brand new this week, in advance of release debut EP 'Float' (Out Aug 12th), the London, UK group have signed to Speedy Underground, and they made their Speedy Underground debut a few months back with digital single 'Speedboat'. Dan Carey sat in on sessions for their full EP, which is set to land this summer. The band's own Jude Lilley comments... "The most exciting thing for us as a band is capturing our performances live, which something Speedy is renowned for. Everything you hear in the EP is us in the room working together as unit - apart from Dyl who recorded his take across the whole EP in one! There’s something really cool about listening back to the takes and realising ‘this is what the room sounded like 5 minutes ago… and that’s us making the noise’. To us "Float" is a collage, and a demonstration of the band putting everything in the mixer and seeing what comes out (lyrics included) and it’s exactly what Dan heard before getting us involved with the label." Though most of their web-presence & press claims they only just started releasing material in April; a Bandcamp page w/ the same band & lead singer name indicate they've actually been active since 2017, so maybe check it out before their past disappears in the new narrative... Pure Adult | The Power Of Incredible Violence Pt. III | The Power Of Incredible Violence Pt. III | FatCat Records | 2022 | Having grown up in the unusually sheltered environment of a church-turned-cult, Brooklyn based musician Jeremy Snyder has always found himself drawn to the harsh, dissonant music that was off limits during his formative years. Today, Pure Adult, the experimental punk band he formed in 2017 with contemporary dancer and visual artist Bianca Abarca, has released new single 'The Power of Incredible Violence Pt. III' via FatCat Records. The single, a visceral explosion of angst that calls to mind post-punk greats This Heat, addresses two questions; What does a hyper-violent oppressor perceive as violence against itself? What threatens the fundamental structure that upholds its violence? | 0:18:17 (Pop-up)
Joe Unknown | Silent | Silent | Darco Record | 2022 | ‘Silent’ is a gushing, assault on the senses. Speaking of the track Joe says “I can’t really describe it, I feel like if u get it you get it, if you don’t that’s ok… you’re probably good in the company of silence” Musically Joe Unknown draws influences from the best of British; punk and hip-hop mixed with a spit of rhymes and on the nose lyrics that chronicle both sides to the day-to-day reality of life in Britain, through his eyes. There’s the relatable side everyone can connect to vs the honest side people don’t want to admit. His eclectic mix of influences and diverse sound sees him sit comfortably alongside his British peers such Kae Tempest and Idles as well as global artists like Tyler, The Creator and A$AP Rocky | 0:23:07 (Pop-up)
Coins Parallèles | Un Trou Dans Le Tete | Demo | Contact Minimal | 2022 | Coins Parallèles is a solo project from Montreal and Yan Skene. His Demo is a 5-track cassette with excellent post-punk sung in French. It came out last week on Mangel in Germany, SYF Records (Poland), Urticaria Records (France), Tough Gum Records (USA), and Contact Minimal (Montreal). Un Trou Dans La Tete translates to "A Hole In The Head"... | 0:25:38 (Pop-up)
Maraudeur | Face Figure | Puissance 4 | Peroquebien | 2021 | These nine unique songs of „Puissance 4“ - the second album by Maraudeur of Leipzig, Germany - are completely Sci-Fi. They are opening up the view into various worlds inbetween seconds. Images I feel familiar with are transforming themselves to unexpected landscapes, driven by the strong integrity of bass, synth, and drums. If this would be a shuttle it would go back and forth on sonic streets guided by the vocals of the different songs, intersecting with crowded supermarkets, car traffic, wide beach and beaming portals to parallel universes. | 0:28:13 (Pop-up)
Cumgirl18 | Dumb Bitch | Dumb Bitch | Suicide Squeeze | 2022 | In a perfect world, we’d all be comfortable with our bodies. And we’d all be respectful of how other people choose to present and share their bodies with others. For a moment, it seemed the internet could help usher in this perfect world by providing a platform of interaction where physical appearances were a matter of our own invention. But of course, the assholes ruin everything. As soon as cumgirl8 began exploring the artistic possibilities of fusing the URL world with in-the-flesh performances, the assholes had to come in and ban them from social media platforms because of their name. Puritans, TERFS, and homophobes always find a way to impose their bullshit on the gender outlaws and sexual provocateurs of our times. Well, cumgirl8 has had enough of the archaic mores and narrow-minded values. On their latest single “dumb bitch,” the Brooklyn quartet take the punk attitude of The Slits and the scrappy after-hours throb of early electroclash and meld it into a dance-floor anthem of defiance and non-conformity. “Gender and sexual politics are the overarching point of the song,” says bassist Lida Fox, “but it also gets into how these dynamics play out in a society ruled by capitalism… how the roles we’re expected to play can become toxic and hypocritical to how we truly feel and so often we find ourselves stuck in patterns that hurt ourselves and those we love. It’s exploring the space between romance, masochism, pleasure, narcissism, and the balance of how much we give and take in our relationships.” | 0:30:46 (Pop-up)

Honey Bane | Girl On The Run | You Can Be You | Crass Records / Bandcamp | 1979 / 2002 | "Honey Bane began her musical career at the age of 14 in 1978 when she formed the punk rock band the Fatal Microbes. The band released a split 12" record with anarcho-punk band Poison Girls the same year. The first single, "Violence Grows" garnered some press attention and was given positive reviews by the British music paper Sounds. After the 1979 breakup of the Fatal Microbes, and a stint in a juvenile detention facility that garnered more press attention, Bane began a collaboration with Crass, while she was on the run from the Social Services after serving a sentence at the St. Charles Youth Treatment Centre in Essex. Lending lead vocals and backed by the band under the name Donna and the Kebabs, Crass released the EP You Can Be You in 1979. It was the debut release on Crass' newly found label, Crass Records. The following year, Bane released her debut solo single, "Guilty", and sang vocals for Killing Joke on "What's the Matter" during a February 1980 gig at London's Venue club. The recording was later released on a bootleg album, Killing Joke - Live At The Venue LP." You Can Be You was re-released Mar 4, 2022. | * | 0:47:32 (Pop-up) |

Music from 'Wéi 成为' |
Orange Milk Records |
2022 |
(Out: August 19th, 2022) A preview of one of the tracks from Nick Storring's eighth album (and third release for Ohio's Orange Milk Records) takes the one-person-orchestra approach for which he is acclaimed and translates it to a single instrument: the piano. Recorded on everything from the innards of an old upright piano to a Disklavier (a computer-controlled acoustic piano) housed at Yamaha's Toronto offices, and using playing techniques that span conventional to idiosyncratic, Storring conjures a vast and vivid colour palette. Music from 'Wéi 成为' was composed for the choreography of his frequent collaborator, Yvonne Ng and began its life in a residency at the Banff Centre in December 2017. Just like the unique movement vocabulary found in Ng's quintet dance (Wéi 成为) Storring's copiously layered score moves fluidly between tender lyrical phrases and driving interlocking figures, and from thick textural swarms to supple transparency. |

Pinch Points | Reasons To Be Anxious | Process | Exploding In Sound | 2022 | As the album title suggests, Process is a commentary on structural collapse; the systemic failures and baked-in inequalities that are ravaging ecosystems, the mental health system, the gig economy workforce and all aspects of our lives. The title Process also recognises the emotions processed and channelled in the songs, as a collective expression of empathy and shared grief. A true collaboration, finding consensus from the experiences of four individual humans, Melbourne, Australia's Pinch Points embody music-making as an act of friendship and community, upholding the band’s shared belief in the music scene as a real-life platform for connection, strength and solidarity. | 1:12:05 (Pop-up)
Kat Haus | I Wanna Bite Ya | Manic | 3523477 Records DK | 2022 | Kat Haus (She/Her) is an Airdrie, AB, Canada based Thrash Polka solo artist, hell bent on polluting the world with her hysterically-feverish-sounding filth. Kat's debut EP, Manic, was her first foray into writing, recording and producing although it cannot be chalked up to talent, but rather a hyperfixation disorder. | 1:14:51 (Pop-up)
Psychic Weapons | All On Fire | All On Fire (Digital Single) | Self-Released (Bandcamp) | 2020 | Derek & Babs are in this band! Onyon | Dry Plants | Onyon | Trouble In Mind | 2022 | Also haling from Leipzig, Onyon’s synth-soaked racket on their debut pits synth vs. guitar as they arc & dive-bomb around the rhythm section’s stuttering pace. Some used to call that “herky-jerky”, but this isn’t that intricate or precise. Onyon’s ragged magic lies in those imprecise recorded moments caused by excitement, fervor & feeling. Vocalists Ilka Kellner and Maria Untheim keep it cool, trading of lead duties in both English & German in a detached monotone most times while singing fantastical or mundane tales about shrunken heads, nature, cats & someone forgetting to water their plants. While the whole affair has whiffs of Kleenex, X-Ray Spex, DEVO, Chrisma and the like, Onyon’s debut also tips the hat to newer groups like the aforementioned Maraudeur, The Staches or The Cosmetics (but filtered thru a modern-day, urban-decay post-punk lens… that’s a thing, right?) | 1:22:32 (Pop-up)
Pozi | Watching You Suffer | PZ1 | PRAH Recordings | 2019 | 'PZ1' rattles along with nervous energy, frantic and frenetic, recalling the post-punk bands the trio bonded over, from PiL to Devo and Television. It’s refreshing to hear a punk band sans guitars. Brooks’ screeches and wails on an often-processed violin provide the perfect counterpoint to Burroughs’ own staccato delivery. Marc Riley of the BBC loves this band. So do we. All hail London's POZI! More punk without guitars, please! | 1:24:50 (Pop-up)

Kübler-Ross | Koss | Kübler-Ross | Ice Machine | 2020 / 2022 | (Re-)Release date July 8, 2022. Kübler-Ross is a minimal synth/wave/industrial three-piece from Glasgow, Scotland, featuring Craig Clark, Katie Shannon, and veteran electronic producer and remixer producer Dave Clark, best-known for his Sparky moniker, and as one-half of the production/remix team Optimo (Espacio). First emerging in 2015 with a couple of compilation appearances, Kübler-Ross released their debut, self-titled album in 2020. Originally released as a limited-edition cassette on the Glasgow label Akashic Records, the album — now resequenced and released on vinyl via Suction Records’ minimal synth sublabel Ice Machine — is a collection of tracks recorded over a three year period in a variety of studios, rehearsal rooms, and gigs, documenting the musical variety and ferocity of their incendiary live performances. The Akashic tape, despite being low-key, under-the-radar, and released in limited quantity, managed to earn them a Long List nomination for SAY (Scottish Album of the Year) for 2020. Al-Qasar, Lee Ranaldo | Awal | Awal (Digital Single) | Glitterbeat Records | 2022 | Released June 8, 2022 in advance of a full length release Sep 16, 2022. "Middle Eastern psych-rock collective Al-Qasar’s debut album is an explosive mix of heavy Arabian grooves, global psychedelia and North African trance music. The band calls it “Arabian fuzz.” Brazenly electric and deeply connected. Guests include Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) and Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys)... “Al-Qasar was born in the Barbès neighbourhood of Paris,” explains band leader Thomas Attar Bellier. “I’ve lived in Los Angeles, Paris, New York, Lisbon… I wanted to start a project that was in tune with the daily life of people living in these international cities, something diverse, radically colourful, with a fresh, contemporary outlook on what societies really look like today”. The musicians came together, from France, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and the United States. Shows followed, first in France, then in Europe and the Middle East. They put out an EP, the widely-lauded Miraj, recorded in Cairo. In the same time frame, Attar Bellier collaborated with the likes of Emel Mathlouthi and Dina El Wedidi, two of the most exciting names in contemporary Arab music. Work on Who Are We? began in December 2020, with Attar Bellier composing eight tracks that writhe and roar in skilfully controlled chaos. Bass, drums and traditional percussion create a deep, irresistible groove for the foundation, while electric saz and guitars build a wailing wall above, with Moroccan vocalist Jaouad El Garouge’s ecstatic voice, steeped in his Gnawa upbringing, pulling inspiration from history as it strides into the future. Drawing on years of experience working in Los Angeles studios, Attar Bellier produced the album. Who Are We? translates the sound that inhabited his head into something physical that stirs spirit, heart and feet. It is relentless and insistent, like a psychedelic celebration on the dancefloor, bristling with the kind of deep energy..." https://glitterbeat.com/artists/al-qasar/ | * | 1:40:20 (Pop-up) |
Neutrals | New Town Dream | Bus Stop Nights EP | Static Shock | 2022 | Just as there was in the late 80s and early 90s, there is still a small number of acts with an interminable sense of cool, who prefer to do things differently. Whether by considered choice, or simple natural proclivity, theirs is the musical path less travelled. Oakland, California’s, Neutrals appears to fall directly in between the above explanations, as they juxtapose all manner of indie-cool yesteryear, into a sound that they have made their own since the brilliance of the 2019, Kebab Disco, debut album. Starting with a core foundation of professional Scottish (indie-pop) courtesy of the Lanarkshire accent of Allan McNaughton (Giant Haystacks) and augmenting this sense of BMX Bandits demi-twee, with a caustic driven, jangly garage rock energy, their sound is the unreplicable mix of C86 ramshackle and The Undertones drive. | 1:43:35 (Pop-up)
THE WAEVE | Something Pretty | Something Pretty Single | Transgressive Records | 2022 | The WAEVE came together after exchanging messages during the lockdown Christmas of 2020. They soon started writing songs before their collaboration “gave rise to an unexpected sonic universe”, per a statement. Inspired by “a shared love of English folk music, storytelling and the associated landscapes of this beleaguered island”, their music soon turned into something of their own, with “a cinematic breadth whilst maintaining an honest intimacy” and “guitars, saxophones AND strings lifting the songs into other stratospheres”. The WAEVE’s upcoming material is said to speak to “themes of oblivion and surrender, juxtaposed with suggestions of hopefulness and light”. The WAEVE are Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall. | 1:45:12 (Pop-up)

Weak Signal | Poor People | WAR & WAR | Colonel Records | 2022 | Weak Signal represent a constant on the N.Y.C. underground. The trio’s dark cinematic pop evokes late summer nights, apathy and urgency, buzz guitars over garbage trucks. The range of Bones’ guitar suggests he’s been lured by the sweet tone of Peter Green as well as the metallic attack of Paul Reynolds.
