I have been to the Isle of Eigg! It's a fantastic place. The residents bought it back from its feudal laird. The only food they don't produce locally and have to import from mainland Scotland is grain.

I have been in the Massacre Cave there *and* in the related Massacre Chapel on the Isle of Skye. Lot. Going. On.

TomDash, I have many recommendations if you go. All the best massacre sites -- and more! Ask any time!

We went on a very wet walk/hike on Eigg and then went to the little teahouse to pass the time till the ferry. I was soaked but suddenly remembered I had dry socks in my backpack. I went to change them and came back to the table, and K8 and our friends all had a can and a dram, but I had only a can -- or so it seemed, until my friend moved it to show the golden dram behind it. I tearsed out loud, I tell you! That was a fine dram.

We have been 5 times, too! Orkney is a strong desire. I am also in very early talks about possibly canoeing the Great Glen. (We canoed Loch Tay and the River Tay from Killin to Aberfeldy a few years back.)

OMX, we stayed in Elgol! The greatest dance I ever went to was the Elgol Ceilidh on the night of the summer solstice! We were there for the town day celebration and spent the night in a tin-roofed croft house. One of the greatest days of my life!

Apparently construction is underway for a Bayonne to NYC ferry. Makes so much sense considering they're building high rises like mad down here. Would also help since the median age around here is younger and dating apps use location radius-based matching algorithms. Bayonne/JC/Hobo people just get matched with Manhattan/BK people...NOBODY wants to make that commute!

I just wish that they made the ferry landing in Astoria a bit more accessible and easy to find. Moronic planners put it in a VERY shifty location that's a bit of a spot for serious crime, and no shuttle bus from 30th Avenue to the landing which again should be a no-brainer because there's already a bus route that ALMOST gets there--all they would have to do is expand the route a few blocks. If there was a safe reliable way for me to get to the ferry landing, I would use the crap out of it and save money on car services to Brooklyn.
Avatar 10:28am

Today's been a bit of a bugger. I ran into the back of another car at some lights. (A cop's car, even). At first looked like I got away with just a dent and a scratch until I opened the hood, now it won't close. More trouble every day.
Avatar 10:30am
HyperDose:

The Hoboken ferry is poorly organized. For weekend service you have to go all the way up from the bus terminal to the 14th street pier, which is an additional Uber expense if you're trying to avoid arriving at your social gathering looking like a swamp thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Handy Haversack:

Threemoons, the location of that ferry landing is EVEN WORSE if you're trying to use a human-powered boat in Hallets Cove.

But remember: the NYC Ferry service is not designed to serve NYC residents. It's designed as a tourist mover, developer advertising point, and utter taxpayer boondoggle. For the use of a wildly inefficient, environmentally degrading form of transport, we the NYC residents get to foot the bill for the subsidies that keep the fares pegged to the subway rather than the real price of operation, which would be around $10 per ride. Which incentivizes Hornblower to put in more and more lines because they get guaranteed govt. (our) money for every boat rather than serving commuter demand like the NY/NJ commuter ferries from NY Waterway.

Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@HH the sad thing is that a ferry could have been done right. They have water taxis seamlessly integrated with the subway service in Copenhagen for example. And yeah, they are being used to drive overdevelopment of luxury housing, as opposed to being a real option for most people. I mean, in Lower Manhattan, you saw NY Waterways shuttles ALL OVER THE PLACE. They had no problem setting up shuttle service when they were moving rich folx and tourists from Lower Manhattan to Jersey and back every day. Regular schlubs like me are stuck though. I almost got mugged the last time I tried to get to the Astoria landing, which is smack dab in the middle of housing projects in a secluded corner thereof. Coming home, I got off at the LIC landing which is (SURPRISE) near a very $$$$$$$$$$ "public/private" park project (AKA taking of public parkland by RE developers) and hiked to the 7 train. OF COURSE Hell itself would freeze over before they simply extended the bus route up/down 30th Avenue to the Ferry because then *gasp* the POORS who take the subway may be tempted to use the Ferry. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@HH I remember reading about that conflict. Such a 💩💩💩 show. NYC is an archipelago city--there is absolutely ZERO reason to NOT have seamlessly integrated ferries as part of the MTA system ESPECIALLY if they are pushing for the elimination of Metro cards (crappy idea but that's another TED talk) and using phones for everything. I should be able to step out of my front door, wait at the bus stop that is literally 10 steps from said door, take a bus to the ferry at the end of 30th Avenue and pay on the bus and then transfer to a ferry and then back into the system once I am at my destination if need be. It should take me an hour or less to get to Greenpoint, and a little longer to Redhook, not a convoluted BS thing involving 2 subways and a bus when the ferry is right here. And Red Hook may as well be on Mars if you are talking public transportation.

@3M If the Metro cards go then they want cash? Guessing they'll offer a yearly fee for our "convenience". This whole subscription business model is a bad idea for consumerism long term. Though it does give you another reason to cancel Netflix!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@Hyperdose they want to have everyone use an app eventually. Heck, it took forever for the busses to even start using MetroCards, and the "need a special ticket for express busses" machines in NYC still REQUIRE MetroCards IIRC. Such a waste of resources.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am

@HH YEP. But still, no money to make every station and bus ADA compliant, which is the biggest scam of all. Luxury stations and ferries for the rich, crumbling inaccessible infrastructure for the poor. My Mom is not going to be taking a freaking Citibike from Port Authority bus terminal to oncologists on the Upper East Side, and she can't do subway stairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@HH and don't forget credit card FEES to even use their system commercially--paid by the MTA and ultimately by the taxpayers and riders. And of course, all the juicy, juicy overdraft fees that struggling folx will incur when they accidentally overdraw just swiping their phone before their paycheck hits and they wind up paying $35 in overdraft fees on a $2.75 fare. It's a gift to the banks, the same awesome folx who....prop up bullshit real estate schemes. Hmmmm....

I mean, imagine...you're struggling with a $15/hour minimum wage job, you live in a two-zone commute so it already costs you almost $10/day or more for express busses and subways...so you already lost one hour of pay just getting to/from work. One overdraft and you just lost over two more hours of work. And, depending on your bank, you may be subject to more than one overdraft fee a day. HSBC used to hit you for $10 for EACH overdraft, so if you didn't know you were over and just went about your day, it could really rack up.

@TomDash I guess this is a good time to tell you how much I love your Friday morning slot. Really going to miss starting Fridays like this.

I'm a bit sad about your move Tom. You will no longer be on my Friday afternoons.

$10? Bank of America's overdraft fee is $35. Ask me how I know 😂
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@HyperDose Yeah, I know RE the $35 fee from BOA, it made the legal industry news recently. Hence my saying that a minimum wage worker stands to lose over two hours of pay if they overdraw just trying to get to work. It's beyond predatory.

Never heard Faye's show but pop punk is in the description. That could be a jarringly different vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am

That said, looks like the new schedule has changed from when I looked yesterday. Faye and Irwin are back, Trouble is off, and @TomDash is on at 9pm. This is verrrrry interesting.

McGroovey:

I live in New Jersey, on a bus line that gets me to the Port Authority in about 25 minutes for $3.50, which is pretty good (although it would be even gooder if NJTransit could be part of the NYC fare system).

But I live not far from two NY Waterways ferry terminals. If I happen to be near them, heading for the city, the ferry would be the fastest way...except that they cost $12 or more (I've lost track of the price, because I rarely use them). That's less than the $18 car toll for the tunnel or the GWB, but obviously a lot more than $3.50.

Sorry to be leaving the slot, folks! I had my meeting about summer and forward and really love this slot...it is just hard to maintain the lack of sleep thing! I average 2hrs of sleep before this show each week - weird! I just cannot fall asleep! So I said i'd keep as an option, but was open to moving...my dream is 12-3PM / 3-6PM weekdays...but this has been such a perfect slot! Except the sleep part...thanks for all the kinds words and hanging on Fridays!

@McGroovey - I know, it makes no sense how fractured things are; there should be better seamless stuff between NY/NJ. And don't get me started RE how much I was paying when I had to do a Subway to the PATH commute...gah...

I have dug muchly having you Friday mornings, TomDash, but K8 and I will be there for Wed. nights! That's a power slot!

My first real kind of obsessive favorite band was Yes. I was in 7th grade, it was like 85-86. YesShows kicked me in the ass. Parallels slayed me, of course. But Gates of Delerium blew my mind. I think I've ripped off riffs and phrases from that piece dozens of times since.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Never had a bad Prog aftertaste from Yes personally. Maybe a little muso diddley around the edges, & also the MTV period... The highs higher than the lows were low tho I guess is my point...

Gates of Delerium is the 2nd heavist song that Yes has done, behind South Side of The Sky.

90125 is a great album. It's as much a Trevor Horn album, as he did production. Great tunes, great playing. And fkit, they cashed in. Why not?

But of course, a sharp 90°turn there.

@RR63 -- one far from insignificant factor is that record labels saw right off that mid 70s punk required far less expenditure for recording time and tour staging than prog. Better profit margin.

Every Genre has its potential assets & liabilities. Each has its Forms that make it that Genre - & each has people who use them Formulaically - or Creatively. Prog like Classical can sound like people practicing their scales in a BugsBunny cartoon - Punk can sound like the same three chords sawed away @ ad nauseam ('We didn't put out a Live album cause frankly we tended to sound like seals barking over jackhammers!' - JoeStrummer)...

@Jonny: Howe hates the Rabin era material. But he has some nerve there, after cashing in with Asia making deliberately super-commercial arena rock. Heck, the first Asia album was one of the biggest selling albums of 82, and the other members of Yes got jealous, hence 90125. Just like Gabriel following ex-bandmates Genesis into top-of-charting in 86, Sledgehammer etc..
