Body Breaks | Y Generation | Bad Trouble | We Are Time | 2021 | "Body Breaks is the microtonal rock duo of Matt LeGroulx and Julie Reich. From their homes in Montreal and Toronto, respectively, the DIY lifers behind projects like Bile Sister, EXPWY, and Galaxius Mons have developed idiosyncratic approaches to bedroom recording that culminate on their collaborative debut. LeGroulx composed the music for Bad Trouble, recording guitar, bass, and drums in tunings that stand in stark contrast to traditional Western consonance. Reich completed their songs with her spellbinding vocals, weaving vulnerable themes of aging as a woman and artist, environmental devastation, and feeling like an outsider in her own generation..." “...Initially, I was trying to tune my guitar to Balinese gamelan scales,” explains LeGroulx. “I quickly came to realize those tunings sounded very normal and beautiful to me. I finally settled on quarter tone – a subset of microtonal music – because it seemed to me that no matter how much I heard, it never sounded in tune.” Body Breaks Band Bandcamp | 0:10:29 (Pop-up)

Ut | This Bliss | Ut | Out Records | 1984 | Ut is a radical rock group that was founded in NYC in Dec.1978 by Nina Canal, Jacqui Ham and Sally Young. Originating in the downtown No Wave scene and inheritors of the collision between rock, free jazz and the avant garde, Ut was conceived to explode the rigidity of conventional rock groups. Songs are constructed through collective improvisation and each member plays all the instruments and rotates the role of singer/director. This would result in sometimes lengthy discussions on stage between songs to the point that this was one of the things they were internationally known for in the 80's. | 0:19:46 (Pop-up)
Suburban Lawns | Green Eyes | Suburban Lawns | IRS Records | 1981 | While not from NYC, Suburban Lawns exist in a parallel universe from Chandra. Su Tissue, an enigmatic young woman fronting a jittery no wave band exploring darker psychological themes. “You had to see Su do her thing live and in person, in front of a crowd, to really get the full, mind-blowing impact. So many contrasting ideas and emotions were being transmitted. What Su did was real. She really put herself out there, exposed and vulnerable, but aggressively sarcastic and in your face at the same time. Brave. Amazing. Disturbing.” | 0:24:26 (Pop-up)
Teenage Jesus & The Jerks | The Closet | Pre Teenage Jesus & The Jerks | Ze Records | 1979 | Lydia Lunch met saxophonist James Chance at CBGB and moved into his two-room apartment. She started to combine her poetry with acoustic guitar and was spurred to start a band after seeing one of Mars' earlier performances. Lunch found guitarist Reck at CBGB and recruited him as a drummer, later moving him to bass. They formed a band called the Scabs and briefly added Jody Harris to their line-up. Lunch knew Bradley Field through Miriam Linna and convinced him to join in early 1977. Lydia Lunch has voiced her disdain for punk rock, claiming in Rip It Up: "I hated almost the entirety of punk rock. I don't think that no wave had anything to do with it. Who wanted chords, all these progressions that had been used to death in rock? To play slide guitar I'd use a knife, a beer bottle... glass gave the best sound. To this day I still don't know a single chord on the guitar." | 0:27:23 (Pop-up)
Lizzy Mercier Descloux | Wawa | Press Colour | Ze Records | 1979 | Mercier Descloux grew up in Lyon, France, but returned to her native Paris in her teens to attend art school. With her partner Michel Esteban, she helped establish the store Harry Cover, temple of the punk movement in France, and the new wave magazine Rock News. She struck up friendships with Patti Smith and Richard Hell when visiting New York in 1975, and both contributed material to her first book, Desiderata. She and Esteban moved to New York in 1977.Descloux died in relative obscurity in 2004 from cancer, but she remains a cult figure, a post-punk iconoclast who made fearless and deeply outré music that never really fit neatly into a scene or a moment of time. Descloux records are meant for punk kids who love to dance, but her style is for all of us, really. | 0:30:20 (Pop-up)
Liquid Liquid | Optimo | Optimo | 99 Records | 1983 | In the clouds between Earth and heaven, there’s a jazz band that doesn’t sound anything like jazz, an art rock band that eschews self-importance and never lets go of your hips and your heart, and an agile percussion ensemble whose tumble spells a melody in the soul. That’s Liquid Liquid, one of the two or three best bands ever to come out of New York City. Liquid Liquid were originally a much more experimental sounding band called Liquid Idiot who released one 7" before reforming as Liquid Liquid and basing their sound around a much more percussive framework. They would invite members of the audience to bring their own percussion to their gigs. Their song "Cavern" of course is the sample to "White Lines (Don't Do It)" For which they were never compensated. | 0:32:43 (Pop-up)

An art-funk ensemble from the South Bronx, ESG (Emerald Sapphire & Gold) was formed by sisters Renee, Valerie, and Marie Scroggins, all of whom handle vocals and percussion, and friends David Miles (guitar) and Leroy Glover (bass). ESG's music is centered around the sisters' complex polyrhythms with atmosphere supplied by bass and pop-flavored guitar. One of THE most important bands to emerge from the NY scene, and one of the most recognizable...yet underpaid and recognized acts out there. |

Chandra Oppenheim + Jesse Locke (We Are Time / Chandra) WFMU - Transmissions From Echo Beach Interview Pt. 1 - May 26 2022
Chandra | Subways | Transportation | Telephone Explosion | 2018 | Born in the NYC underground art scene of the early 1980s, Chandra Oppenheim was a child star like no other. Beginning at age 10, she released her Transportation EPs while backed up by an adult band featuring members of famed mutant disco groups The Dance and Model Citizens. Propelled by infectiously off-kilter grooves, Chandra’s songs explore the singular fascinations of a post-punk pre-teen. | 1:08:26 (Pop-up)
Chandra | Stranger | Transportation | Telephone Explosion | 2018 | The four songs Chandra actually released in 1980 recall fellow nervy New Yorkers ESG and Y Pants, plus the vim of the Slits and LiLiPUT. Oppenheim adds touches of organ and even post-punk melodica to the mix. It’s a reminder that the interiority of adolescents remains complex, self-aware, defiant, and disarming. | 1:11:12 (Pop-up)
Chandra | Concentration | Transportation | Telephone Explosion | 2018 | Chandra once appeared on the Captain Kangaroo show talking about her band. I forgot to ask if he was nice! I hope he was. The video for this song is mesmerizing, and features Chandra weaving her way around a pillar. The video was supposedly the first video ever directed by Ed Steinberg, who later went on to direct videos for Madonna, Cheap Trick, U2 and Yello. Steinberg also founded the RockAmerica video distribution network. | 1:15:04 (Pop-up)

Solid Space | Tenth Planet | Space Museum | In Phaze Records | 1982 | Solid Space was a short-lived British minimal wave band, formed in 1980 by Matthew 'Maf' Vosburgh and Dan Goldstein. Vosburgh and Goldstein, who met at age 11, were previously involved in 1970s new wave band Exhibit A and formed a record label, Irrelevant Wombat Records, at age 14. The band's music and lyrics were heavily indebted to science fiction, in particular the television series Doctor Who. The band's only release that featured all of their material, titled Space Museum, was released on cassette in 1982 through In Phaze Records. Following its release, Solid Space disbanded and their members drifted into obscurity. | 1:57:28 (Pop-up)
Gina X Performance | Plastic Surprise Box | Nice Mover | Crystal | 1978 | It blows my mind more people don't know about Gina X. Stylish electro pioneers Gina X Performance formed in 1978 as a collaboration between charismatic singer-lyricist Gina Kikoine and writer-producer-musician Zeus B. Held. Hailing from Cologne, GXP mixed cool Euro-disco synth pop with an arthouse performance sensibility, as well sexually provocative imagery. The concept for Gina X Performance came together after Held was joined by art history student Gina Kikoine. Influenced by avant-rock stalwarts such as Lou Reed and Patti Smith, as well as the visual avant-garde, Kikoine came on board as singer, lyricist and all-round conceptual director. Inasmuch as GXP had any kind of explicit manifesto, it was "to create and perform music as part of a total combination of poetry, sounds and visual performance, to entertain, and to provoke thought and reaction." Kikoine also described their creative vision as "the absolute union of music, poetry and travesty." | 2:00:18 (Pop-up)
Pink Section | Wine World | Pink Section 12" | Modern Records | 1980 | Named after San Francisco Chronicle's pink-hued arts and entertainment guide, Pink Section coalesced at SF Art Institute and performed their first show at the legendary Deaf Club on Valentine's Day, 1979. These self-taught musicians existed on the fringe (even in the local underground scene), producing an unusual brand of off-kilter post-punk against a backdrop of Dadaist aesthetics. The group itself was strangely symmetrical: singer Judy Gittelsohn and drummer Carol Detweiler (both members of Inflatable Boy Clams), singer / guitarist Matt Heckert (Survival Research Laboratories), and bassist Stephen Wymore. Pink Section Bandcamp | 2:03:27 (Pop-up)
The Anemic Boyfriends | Love Attack | Fake ID/Love Attack 7" | Red Sweater Records | 1981 | Lead by the inimitable Louise Disease, the Anemic Boyfriends were 80's post-punk band from Anchorage, Alaska. Their lyrics are delivered with a mocking leer, and then a goofy little melodica hook punch-lines them, sounding exactly how Ashlee Simpson's embarrassed Saturday Night Live dance looked. | 2:07:02 (Pop-up)
Family Fodder | Love Song | Monkey Banana Kitchen | Fresh Records | 1980 | Trouser Press Review: "Family Fodder These records are bizarre works of multifaceted genius from a strange musical collective. Let me try and elaborate: Monkey Banana Kitchen, listing 15 first-name-only musicians and produced by “The People in Control,” begins with a choral piece and then slowly drifts into a lengthy dub workout; when that ends, a female voice sings a chipper pop song with weedy organ and a verse in French. After that, things begin to get odd… Every track on Monkey Banana Kitchen is an adventure — there is absolutely no consistency. The often dada results run from likable to heinous. Remarkable and great fun, it’s a record that will keep you on the edge of your seat. All Styles, its cover adorned simply by a peace sign, is hypothetically just what the title suggests: two discs (15 discrete songs in all) that give new meaning to the word “variety.” Pre-pigeonholed for ease of reviewing, Family Fodder (here a quartet) ostensibly essay folk, classical, soul, punk, easy listening, Euro-pop, opera, jazz, country-western and more, adapting existing material as well as writing their own. In point of fact, these styles, charming and rewarding as they may be, are not very disparate at all, undoubtedly due to self-definition/delusion and the limitations of 4-track at-home recordings. They are, however, consistently enjoyable and infused with invention, cleverness, talent and a totally open outlook that discards nothing without first having an enthusiastic go at it." The Dandy Warhols | Terraform | Why You So Crazy | Dine Alone Music | 2018 | This album wasn't entirely received, but it's one of the Dandy's best in a while. Conceived as a "fuck you" to the music industry at large, it's got many interesting and unexpected moments a million miles away from "If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth". Interesting.
The Web of Lies | Receiver | Nude With Demon | Wrong Speed Records | 2022 | The band are Neil Robinson on drums and percussion and Edwin Stevens on vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards (I’m guessing he’s got a lot of arms). The single is a low-slung prowl, bristling with menace with bass notes that sound tuned down so they resonate slowly and create a queasy back drop that slides like lava around the relentless drums. The guitar scuds around, firing off riffs that shift and constantly change while staying rooted to some subterranean power source, tearing holes in the fabric of reality through which edgy vocal harmonies appear. The song crescendos to a granite-splitting peak and then collapses in on itself like a sink hole opening up in the universe. | *
Courting | Tennis | Tennis Single | Play It Again Sam | 2022 | Liverpool’s Courting have shared their brand new track ‘Tennis’, as well as announcing a UK tour. “Tennis is a paypig’s personal redemption narrative, set in ‘the city’, and told in two parts,” the band explain. “A twisted tale of two lovers’ back and forth, bound by cricket, bodybuilding, and money. A story as old as time. | *
Viagra Boys | Troglodyte | Troglodyte/Ain't No Thief Single | Year 0001 | 2022 | I admit, when I heard "Ain't No Thief" I was concerned that Viagra Boys were heading into Bloodhound Gang joke frat boy rock rap territory. Troglodyte puts those fears at rest. Taking aim at incels, misognynists and losers...this is pointed social commentary at a time when we absolutely need to put some shitty people in their place. | *

A Certain Ratio | Do The Du (Casse) | The Graveyard & The Ballroom | Factory | 1980 | A Certain Ratio took their name from the lyrics of Brian Eno's song "The True Wheel", taken from his album "Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)" (1974). Their first records were released on the independent label "Factory Records". On their first releases they sound like a successor band of Joy Division. After a trip to New York in the year of 1980, they quickly incorporated funk, african percussion and always remained one of the more interesting Factory Bands...though perhaps ended up being misunderstood by the 24 hour party people of the Hacienda scene...
New Order | ICB | Movement | Factory | 1981 | They were Joy Division and now overnight they were not. That sudden rip out of their lives leaves a vacuum, a lonely place. Emotions were firing through the band, their circle of friends and anyone involved in their creative process which includes Movement’s producer Martin Hannett. This must have been a hugely confusing time for everyone so what do they do? They go back to work like many of us do after a loss. We humans in the West are excellent at burying our feelings and sticking on that plastic facade to carry on regardless. Every one of us who has lost someone has had to go back to work and for Sumner, Morris, and Hook their work was creating music. New Order went on to even arguably greater highlights without Ian Curtis, their record sales essentially underwriting both Factory Records and the Hacienda nightclub...a beautiful disaster, as it were.
Inspiral Carpets | Dragging Me Down | Revenge Of The Goldfish | Mute | 1992 | Nobody gives better distorted organ than Inspiral Carpets. Not as famed as other Madchester bands, they are in many ways more polished and refined and less..."laddish". Elements of the Jam ooze through many of the tunes. They are a good band, who arguably deserved more kudos but are loved by those who know...

1991 |
This song perfectly embodies the feeling of riding the train home drunk and alone from an unsuccessful night at the club. In a 2007 interview, lead singer Damon Albarn expressed distaste for the album, describing it as "awful" and being one of the two "bad records" he has made in his career (the other being Blur album The Great Escape). Albarn further expanded on the album's recording in 2014, explaining that "it wasn't a particularly happy experience" and suggested the band were too keen to please the record label by capitalising on a sound that was popular at the time. Even if he hates it, this song is still one that pulls at many a heartstring... |

Primal Scream | Higher Than The Sun | Screamadelica | Creation | 1991 | Produced by the late great Andrew Weatherall, Screamdelica is the record that bridges indie/psychedelic pop with the emergence of Acid House and Rave culture coming out of the Hacienda. It is also a major transition for Primal Scream and the beginning of their new sound on subsequent albums, again largely Weatherall's influence. Apart from many other glowing reviews and lists Screamadelica has made...NME also named it the "Druggiest Album Ever". If you've ever woken up on a beach in Ibiza after partying for 3 days straight, this song is in your DNA. |

24 Hour People is a fun movie. I had heard Joy Division and couple other Manchester bands from that scene but didn't know any detail until that movie came out. Yes, ACR is made the butt of a couple of jokes.
Random factoid: This guy who taped many many Joy Division shows was sharing them via a torrent site. After he upped all the shows he had, he put up his want list. Nearly all his requests were ACR shows.
