Luge - Interview Edit - Transmissions From Echo Beach -> WFMU 2022/05/19 hugeluge.bandcamp.com/
The Fall | Dog Is Life | I Am As Pure As Oranj | Beggars Banquet | 1988 | The Live Album released in 2000 from the two 1988 shows for the I Am Kurious Oranj album, released the same year. This is a slightly extended (and clearer) version of the spoken word track "Dog Is Life." The music from these performances & subsequent album was commissioned as the score a ballet by Michael Clark, who had previously incorporated a few Fall songs into his ballets in the past. Whether marrying The Fall and Ballet to a full-length collaboration made any reasonable amount of sense could be debated, but I certainly have been much entertained by the union since the day it was released. | 0:00:48 (Pop-up)
Deerhoof | Dog on the Sidewalk | Milk Man | Kill Rock Stars / 5 Rue Christine | 2004 | Let's start with a song about a Dog, from a group called 'Deerhoof, on an album about a Milkman. "Milk Man is the sixth album by the band Deerhoof, released in 2004. It is something of a concept album, based on a character (the "Milk Man" shown on the cover of the album), created by Japanese artist Ken Kagami, a friend of the band." | 0:02:32 (Pop-up)
Deerhoof | Milking | Milk Man | Kill Rock Stars / 5 Rue Christine | 2004 | Let's continue w/ a song about milking, from a group called 'Deerhoof', on an album about a Milkman. This is the first song that resonated w/ me from Deerhoof and still one of my favs. | 0:03:46 (Pop-up)
Luge | Excuse Me Edamame | Actual Rock 'N' Roll | Self Released | 2018 | We will be airing our interview with Luge later tonight. They are the ones who mentioned songs with animals and food & unintentionally gave us the theme for this week's show. As explained in tonight's interview; this song is titled as such due to what was exclaimed in a restaurant. hugeluge.bandcamp.com/ | 0:07:21 (Pop-up)

Dog Faced Hermans | Hear The Dogs | Hum Of Life | Konkurrel / Project A Bomb | 1993 | From the liner notes: "Summer 92. Dutch police, dogs, handlers and a number of helicopters raid the warehouses of BLOKKER, a large supermarket chain, in a flushing-out operation against illegal (read-immigrant) workers. They were later criticised for the extremity of the action. In the liberal fatlands the hand of welcome extended to immigrant peoples, economic or political refugees, is highly ambivalent - with the notorious exception of Britain which flaunts its mean spirit, its closed doors and inhumane immigration policies." The Lovely Eggs | Wildlife | Wildlife | The Lovely Eggs | 2012 | The Lovely Eggs are very much a world view - singing in their own accent, writing lyrics about dinner, animals, boyfriends, teeth, scooters and tempering their odder tendencies with a strong working class aesthetic and a home-made, DIY ethos. Behind the sweetness and the skits Lovely Eggs make a bloody racket, informed by 90's US alt punks like Mudhoney and Hole with the wit of Magnetic Fields and and the manners of Hilda Ogden. | 0:33:26 (Pop-up)
Lucrate Milk | Three Blind Mice | I Love You Fuck Off | Bondage Records | 1987 | Lucrate Milk live shows were noisy and highly theatrical affairs, often featuring bizarre homemade costumes and highlighted by Childress’ eccentric stage presence. Their style has been called "provocative, dadaist, juvenile, and anti-commercial" | 0:34:32 (Pop-up)
Table Sugar | Dog D-Log | Collected Acknowledgements | Stucco | 2018 | Chiming and clanging, Olympia's Table Sugar are nominally post-punk in style, but the only “post-” you’ll imagine in a Table Sugar song is the hyper-charged, sour-sweet second that just passed you by. This is a thrilling band, the punk equivalent of stopping to smell flowers before yanking out a fistful for a friend. | 0:36:58 (Pop-up)
Exploding Seagulls | Johnny Runs For Paregoric | The Best Of Fried Egg Records (Bristol 1979-1980) | Fried Egg Records | 1980 | Exploding Seagulls started at Winchester Art School circa 1974. Paregoric used to be sold over the counter,it has tincture of opium in it..commonly used by heroin addicts in case of emergency. | 0:38:38 (Pop-up)
The Creepers | Liquorice Flavour | Rock 'n' Roll Liquorice Flavour | Red Rhino | 1987 | Ex-FALL guitarist Marc Riley and his ilk have come up with another quirky, rigid fast-paced Anglo post-punk record. It’s no accident that this should appeal to FALL fans or fans of groups like the THREE JOHNS or the MEKONS, as guitarists from both groups make appearances here. | 0:40:51 (Pop-up)
Von Südenfed | Chicken Yiamas | Tromatic Reflexxions | Domino | 2007 | "Chicken Yiamas" begins with acoustic guitars playing some mutant blues. Smith says something about a yardbird and how he has two bones, but there must be something about those drumsticks because he ululates wildly, sounding more energized than at any other moment on the record. How did we get here? What does this all add up to? Hard to say. Tromatic Reflexxions sounds like three guys having a great time ignoring whoever might be asking these questions. | 0:43:32 (Pop-up)
Warmduscher | The Salamander | Khaki Tears | Trashmouth | 2015 | It is in your face. It is intense. It is deliciously deranged. A collaborative project between Saul and Jack of the Fat White Family and Clams Baker, it should be no surprise that pressing play and allowing yourself to be enveloped by Khaki Tears isn’t an endeavour for the faint hearted. | 0:46:06 (Pop-up)

Go Home Productions | The Walrus & The Whale | GHP Aborted Tapes Vol 1 | Go Home Productions | 2005 | Mark Vidler (aka Go Home Productions, aka GHP) is a Watford, UK-based DJ who has spent the best part of the last decade producing Bootleg Mash-Ups and Remixes that have achieved worldwide notoriety and made him the king of the blog/mash scene in the early 2000s. In case you're wondering, the instrumental track is ELO's amazing tune "The Whale" which is epic just on its own...but even better here. | 0:58:24 (Pop-up)
The Dickies | You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla) | The Incredible Shrinking Dickies | A & M Records | 1979 | The Dickies are an American punk rock band formed in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, in 1977. One of the longest tenured punk rock bands, they have been in continuous existence for over 40 years. They are the grandaddies of pop punk and fun fact: Guitarist Stan Lee was a drug buddy of Iggy Pop, once accepting the well known "leopard" jacket that the latter wore in the Stooges as payment for heroin. | 0:59:34 (Pop-up)
Iggy Pop | Dog Food | Soldier | Arista | 1980 | Ex-member of The Stooges James Williamson was originally hired to produce the album, but a conflict between Williamson and David Bowie (who was assisting as a friend of Pop) over recording techniques led to Williamson walking out on the project. Upon signing with Arista records in 1979, Iggy released the confident classic New Values, ushering in his “new wave” era; an era for which perspective is demanded but frequently denied. Punk bands had been name-checking Iggy throughout the 70s and his hip cred had never been higher, so it was natural that he sign up international punk aficionados, ex-Pistol Glen Matlock, Ivan Kral of the Patti Smith Group and Barry Andrews of XTC among others, and unleash one of rock’s great overlooked albums - the sneering Soldier. | 1:01:07 (Pop-up)
Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds | Coyote Conundrum | La Araña es La Vida | In The Red Records | 2016 | La Araña Es La Vida evokes images and emotions from inside the dankest of clubs. You can almost smell the spilled beer and feel the slippery puddles creeping from some long-leaking toilet as the beat goes on. In your mind’s eye there’s a young lady in a tattered leather jacket and tight black skirt with an equally tattered and tight Sisters of Mercy t-shirt on, twisting the night away as the band plays on. | 1:03:00 (Pop-up)
Shannon & The Clams | Onion | Onion | Nonesuch Records | 2018 | Onion follows 2015’s Gone by the Dawn, whose structure was informed by the heartache of two recent breakups, as an exploration of the struggle to summon the nerve to make oneself vulnerable again. | 1:06:42 (Pop-up)
The Limiñanas | Tigre du Bengale | The Limiñanas | Trouble In Mind | 2010 | Limiñanas translates to "limes" and we love limes on Echo Beach. The elevated world they've created is a place where one can sit back and imbibe dizzying sedatives that float freely in the air, surrounded by the coolest vintage swag you can imagine. It's a delicately constructed world of beautiful artifice, and despite the ease with which it seems to have been formed, it's actually not as easy as it looks..Gainsbourg, Morricone, Spector, Stooges, Suidide...this band writes beautiful love letters to them all... | 1:09:27 (Pop-up)
Justin Hinds & the Dominoes | Drink Milk | Drink Milk/Travel With Love 7" | Treasure Isle | 1969 | Listed on Discogs as Justin Hinds & The Damino....Hinds was born in Steertown, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. He started his musical career singing in bars and on the beach in Ochos Rios. Hinds moved to Kingston, Jamaica where he became influenced by Rastafari. He was turned down by Coxsone Dodd's label, but signed with Treasure Isle Records. His first recording with Duke Reid was "Carry Go Bring Come", made in late 1963 in one take. Carry Go Bring Come" was covered by the British ska band The Selecter on their 1980 album Too Much Pressure, and by Desmond Dekker and The Specials on King of Kings. His cousin is none other than the great Horace Andy... | 1:13:19 (Pop-up)

Luge | Triangle Lifestyle | Luge | Self Released | 2020 | Tobias reveals the meaning behind this song (from his frame of reference) and it is one of the most wonderful moments I've had interviewing a band & watching their interactions. Luge have only endeared themselves further into my heart w/ their light & lively take on their complex and playful art. Thank-you, dear Luge. hugeluge.bandcamp.com/ | 2:01:18 (Pop-up)
Silver Apples | Tabouli Noodle | The Garden | Bully Records | 1968 /1969 / 1998 | Reissue of the famous "lost" third album that was originally released on a limited run on Whirlybird Records in 1998. With two additional tracks. | 2:05:04 (Pop-up)
Detroit Grand Pubahs | Sandwiches | Funk All Y'All | DetEleFunk | 2001 | The first time I saw this video and heard this song, my life changed for the better. Sandwiches was DGP's first single. When a Jive Electro A&R man, dutifully out buying records at a local strip club, heard it he immediately knew he had something special and prepared to unleash it on the world. Since then, they've scored a pop hit in a number of countries and an underground classic worldwide. They’ve also taken their live show to another level, with Paris donning multiple costumes and personalities and encouraging the crowd to participate in the funk. | 2:09:25 (Pop-up)
Gorillas Feat. Gruff Rhys & De La Soul | Superfast Jellyfish | Plastic Beach | Parlophone Records | 2010 | A perfect record for Echo Beach listenings, to us this stands as the very best of all the Gorillaz albums. Along with a typically diverse band of collaborators, Albarn dips into Krautrock, funk, and dubstep, as well as the weary, more melodic music he's perfected an electronic take on baroque pop. This is one of Albarn's best moments...if not the pinnacle. | 2:12:31 (Pop-up)
Baxter Dury, Jason Williamson | Almond Milk | Prince Of Tears | PIAS | 2017 | One of our favourites off this album and how perfect is Jason Williamson on this! The Quietus offers the best take on this mid life crisis of a record..."There are a lot of grumpy, depressed, confused middle-aged white men floundering right now, as they swirl around the late-capitalist-patriarchy plughole with Trump and Johnson and Farage flashing before their eyes. The best among them are taking a personal inventory, working to redefine their place. As ever, there are options to proceed. You can blame the harassed, the demonised and the underrepresented. You can imagine that a playing field levelling out is a playing field working against you. Or, you know, you can examine your own feelings of inadequacy and make a great album - an uncomfortable, great album." | 2:15:25 (Pop-up)
Goat Girl | Cracker Drool | Goat Girl | Rough Trade | 2018 | The band played early gigs in The Windmill, Brixton and named themselves after comedian Bill Hicks' character 'Goat Boy'. They signed a deal with Rough Trade Records on 24 July 2016, and put out a couple of singles prior to the release of their debut album two years later. During this time, they also supported The Fall in their final London show before Mark E. Smith's death, at the 100 Club on 27 July 2017. | 2:17:09 (Pop-up)
MEATRAFFLE | The Horseshoe | Hi-Fi Classics | Trashmouth Records | 2015 | South London band Meatraffle released their debut album ‘Hi-Fi Classics’ in 2015. You might remember they’re the rabble who have gloriously daft names like Tingle Mackerel who plays guitar, Cloudy Truffles on bass and Fats McCourt behind the kit. They’re lead by trumpet playing vocalist Zsa Zsa Sapien. Fun Fact...Zsa Zsa is also a big fan of the Canadian band Rush. | 2:19:49 (Pop-up)
The Murmaids | Popcicles & Icicles | Popcicles & Icicles 7" | Chatahoochie | 1963 | The Fischer sisters were 15 and 17 years old in 1963. Sally Gordon, also 17, was a fellow student of Terry Fischer at Grant High School, where they sang in the choir. The Fischers' father was Carl Fischer, composer of standards such as Billie Holiday's "You've Changed" and "We'll Be Together Again," sung by Frankie Laine. Carl Fischer was also Laine's musical director and arranger for 10 years. Their mother, Terry Sr., sang with the big bands of the day, ultimately becoming the first female singer with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Their grandmother and her three sisters played the vaudeville circuit as the Locus Sisters. Sally’s father, Leonard Gordon, was Assistant Music Librarian at Paramount Pictures. | 2:24:29 (Pop-up)

DRINKS | Tim, Do I Like That Dog? | Hermits On Holiday | Birth Records | 2015 | DRINKS is the project of Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon and White Fence's Tim Presley. Rather than merge their respective psych sensibilities, they've stripped away the pop fabric to muck around in primitive territory, recasting themselves as outsiders. An interviewer asked Le Bon and Presley whether they intended Hermits to be a psych album. "I don't even know what those words mean anymore," Le Bon replied. | 2:35:42 (Pop-up)
The Kills | Alphabet Pony | Midnight Boom | Domino | 2008 | Stylish, sexy, and simple, the nouveau-garage clatter of the Kills has magnificently sat on a line between base and brilliant. They've traded in a bluesy, overdriven sleaze that's served many a duo well in recent years, blurring the edges between their tandem vocals, staccato guitars, and vintage drum machines. | 2:42:15 (Pop-up)
Bunnydrums | Little Room | Win/Little Room 7" | sel released | 1981 | Formed on January 20th, 1980 as a collaboration between three members of the Boneheads and one member of the Autistics, both part of Philadelphia's punk rock scene in the late 1970s. They began with singer David Goerk, drummer Joe Ankenbrand, bassist Greg Davis and guitarist Frank Marr. In 1984 drummer Joe Ankenbrand left the band and was replaced by Bobby Williams. Bunnydrums officially disbanded after a New Year Eve's show in 1986. | 2:44:06 (Pop-up)
Kap Bambino | Lezard | Blacklist | Because | 2009 | Man, I miss 2009. This is a song by French band Kap Bambino. It is about a lizard. It's gorgeous. There's something about that last outro section that is glorious and shambolic. Sure, there were other synth duos...but Kap Bambino are among the best. | 2:47:12 (Pop-up)
New Fries | Butter & Spice Breez-Y | More | Telephone Explosion | 2016 | Toronto's New Fries captured the imagination like none other. They brought No Wave crashing synths and distorted, crunched sounds paired with breathless yelps and squeaks...and created pointed, uncomfortable moments. Their sound has since evolved, but this record is indeed, a very special thing. | 2:50:05 (Pop-up)

Damaged Bug | The Frog | Cold Hot Plumbs | Castle Face | 2015 | Ohsees John Dwyer knows his way around a synth and a drum machine as well as he does a guitar...Cold Hot Plumbs is a visit to the alien world that sent it into the cosmos - lush, textural, psychedelic at times, the songs breathe with a otherworldly sadness and heart, with barbed and sophisticated arrangements flowering in every direction. | 2:57:00 (Pop-up)

1984 |
Originally intended as an outlet for Bauhaus guitarist Daniel Ash to record his more experimental material, Tones On Tail surfaced in 1982 with a self-titled 12" EP on 4AD Records. Fuelled on a steady diet of hash and Big Macs, this musical offshoot became the psychedelic and light-hearted antithesis of Bauhaus' gloom and doom reputation. Danny was initially joined by Glenn Campling on bass & keyboards, and, with the subsequent demise of Bauhaus in 1983, drummer Kevin Haskins, turning this 'side-project' into a 'proper' band... |
