Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I've shared this story before on this board, but what the heck, here goes again. Warren Dewey was one of the engineers on Waiting for Columbus. He had a stereo store just blocks from my house, Berkeley Stereo, where hanging on a wall was the original painting used for the cover of the album. I brought in my Mobile Fidelity copy of WfC, vinyl, for Warren to play. He was mighty impressed with the quality of his and MF's work, really got a kick out of it. Then he proceeded to tell about the experience of recording it, e.g., how he hung a mic down the spiral staircase the band used to enter the stage singing. He also worked with Lowell George to rerecord some of the solos, or so he claimed. Apparently one can hear the ghosts of the actual live solos if one listens hard enough.

Alas, Warren passed away in January of last year.

I'm no gun owner, nor do I believe the 2A should be as liberally, i.e., sloppily, interpreted as the Court has managed to do. But one of my friends, an extremely intelligent guy, is pretty much a 2A absolutist, and to some extent for reasons I can sympathize with.

Forget what works for every other Nation on Earth
...the only answer for the USA could ever be armed Civil War.
As for the Second Amendment - one thredbare sentence installed by Southern Slaver States' Rights activists in the first place
- one either interprets 'well-regulated militia' to mean the USA has a Right to have Armed Forces
- or we selectively scratch out 'well-regulated' entirely (so much then for Amendment Absolutists...) - & interpret it as everyone has the Right to use Arms against the Federal Government itself.
Which might interfere with one or two other Constitutional Rights & Laws here or there...
But you want the Wild West, you'll probly get it. You might argue with thre Directors of that Movie - as it plays out, I fear. Even if you remain unconcerned about who the Producers really were - all along...

Two days ago I saw a clip of retiring Chief Justice Warren Burger, 12/16/1991, I believe. He said if he could go back to the drafting of the Constitution, he would have the 2nd Amendment completely omitted. In his view, it was the most abused and fraudulently applied and misinterpreted piece of the document. I won't try to quote him verbatim; suffice to say, he was a lifelong Republican and conservative jurist.

Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:40pm

My understanding : The entire Bill of Rights was Amended to the Constitution by States - mostly Southern - who feared too much Federal power generally. A political appeasement. One can never be reminded too often of what the word 'Amendment' literally means...

Boogie a word with clear African roots - back to the beginnings of Our Musics & beyond... There's BoogieWoogie pianers - but in our times it increasingly has a tone of 'Dancey' - think thee not ??

It's worth noting that the Ukrainian constitution makes no mention of a right to bear arms, or of arms at all, other than that people should be able to assemble freely without them. This has not prevented Ukraine from mouinting a robust defense against a tyrant's invading army.

adamdoesit - the USA does in fact have one Amendment before the Second (& several after it ...which the Absolutists are generally as ignorant of as you & I are...). I'll beg your indulgence with one more note, then I'll remove my outraged paws keyboard til Mr. Science comes to soothe me. The bike boom of the 1890s was enabled in part by the availability of good steel tubing and the means to work it developed in the North during the Civil War. Bicycle manufacture was a way for arms manufacturers to their doors open after demand collapsed when the shooting was done. Bicycles are thus true plowshares beaten from swords.
