Funk is an interesting description of this-not much James Brown or Funkadelic to my ears. Cool, though!

Was there different musical sounds produced by Yemenite, Syrian, and Egyptian immigrants to Israel? Curious.
Avatar 8:16pm
Observations:

Excellent question doctorjazz. I think so, but most information is not in English so it's hard to know exactly. but there are regional differences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
doctorjazz:

Were there different...pardon my grammar...
  8:18pm
Listener Gregory:

I’d love to know what the percussion was in that last song (Sea of Passion). It sounded like garbage can lids.
  8:29pm
Doug Schulkind:

Using a garage can lid? He could play for the Astros.

Enjoying the interview.

My can lid guess may have been spot-on, surprisingly.

David, if we don’t know whether a substance is legal in the US, then it probably isn’t.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
doctorjazz:

I was at a family wedding (a nephew married a girl of Syrian Jewish heritag), this AwaDeak sounds a bit more like what the 20 year olds danced to when the DJ played for them (with the disco dub-swells added).
  9:08pm
Listener Gregory:

Can’t stay to the end, but very interesting show, David. Thanks!

This (La Sama) sounds like it could be German Rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm

The Yemeni vibe is coming through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm

But the drum part is so odd...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
doctorjazz:

It almost sounds like it could be a free jazz drummer, counter to the rhythm at times.

Raz Mesinai, under his Badawi guise, took music of this tradition and put it through a dub/illbient treatment (all instrumental).

(although there were some Bedouin influences as well)
