Breakwater | Release The Beast | Release The Beast 7" | Be With Records | 2019 | This mighty slab of funk may have been lost to the ages, except for the great stroke of luck of having Daft Punk sampling a large chunk of it for their song "Robot Rock". This tune is proof that it is so, so much more than that pummelling sample...the vocal delivery, killer solos and lyrics make this a tune that absolutely should be included in the pantheon of great funk tunes. Possessing a sound and a feel that was lightyears ahead of its time, “Release The Beast” is a showcase for Breakwater’s phenomenal power-funk capabilities. The energy is astounding. It rips out of the grooves on a deep funk tip, with speaker-smashing, room-shaking drums competing with distorted funk-rock guitar, bumping bass and space-age synths. But it’s not without its compellingly haunting elements too. What else can we say? It’s a genius piece of music. | 0:19:47 (Pop-up)
No More | Suicide Commando | Suicide Commando 7" | Too Late Records | 1981 | No More was founded by Andy A. Schwarz (vocals, guitar, bass), Tina Sanudakura (synthesizers), Christian Darc (drums, vocals) and Thomas Welz (bass, vocals) in Kiel, a seaside town in the northern part of Germany. The 7" EP "Too Late" was the first release in 1980 and was recorded in a small laundry-room with a 4-track TEAC (the EP was reviewed in the German SOUNDS-magazine as "strangely, archaic music, brute sound that seems to be recorded with a purposely damaged 4-track"). After the departure of Thomas Welz at the end of 1980, No More worked as a trio until the end of 1983. The song "Suicide Commando" (released in 1981 and not to be confused with the Belgian band Suicide Commando, who named themselves after that song) is the band's biggest success. The New Musical Express described "Suicide Commando" as "suitable German electro fashion" but the song spread in the following years internationally regardless of genre and scene. In the 1990s the song entered the Techno- and Electroscene, when it was remixed by DJ Hell and Echopark (Moguai & Torsten Stenzel). | 0:24:26 (Pop-up)
The Locos | Guantanamera Rock | Guantanamera Rock 7" (Promo) | RCA/Victor | 1966 | The Locos de Ritmo are Mexico’s premier rock ‘n roll group who have been recording since 1957 and who still perform today. ack in 1966 they played at THE Whisky a Go Go along with Gene Clark’s Band (later THE Byrds). An unknown The Doors opened their sets at the Whiskey a gogo before the fame they gained in 1967....Happy Cinco De Mayo!!! | 0:27:45 (Pop-up)
Spanish Town Skabeats | Stop That Train | Stop That Train/Stir The Pot 7" | Rock A Shaka | 2021 | "Stop That Train" is a 1965 ska song by Jamaican band The Spanishtonians (also known as the Spanish Town Skabeats), that has been covered and sampled by numerous artists. Its most famous cover was its first, a 1967 cover by Keith & Tex. That rendition was in turn sampled by various artists, including Scotty, the Beastie Boys and Vanilla Ice. The song has also been covered by Clint Eastwood & General Saint and Don Campbell. Great vocal performance, a driving beat and blazing horns all add up to a ska classic and dancefloor killer. | 0:30:18 (Pop-up)
Les Surts | C'est Grace A Toi | J'ai Tant De Joie/C'est Grace A Toi 7" | RCA/Victor | 1967 | This is a fantastic cover of "You Can't Hurry Love" Coco, Pat, Rocky, Dave, Monikya (Monique), and Nicole Rabaraona were the eldest six of twelve children. Born in Madagascar, the four brothers and two sisters performed as the vocal group "Les Surfs" from 1963 to 1971. They recorded and toured throughout the 1960s in languages and countries all over the world. Performances at San Remo secured them as a popular act in Italy, Spain, and Germany. With further television appearances in France, Italy, England, and the United States they garnered an international audience of millions. As a dynamic-sounding, original-looking group, they secured many original compositions and some covers of English-language songs. They ended in 1971, as family life and children took over from performing. The following years would see Monica and Rocky reunite for a couple of years but this didn't last. The boys settled in Canada and started their own families. Monica lived in Canada for a while but eventually returned to live in France. Nicole immigrated to the United States and worked as a carer for children in need. Monika died suddenly on November 15, 1993 at the age of 48. She is survived by her two sons Lawrence and Nicolas. Nicole died on May 5, 2000 and was laid to rest with her sister in the Rabaraona family tomb in Fiakarana, Madagascar. | 0:32:50 (Pop-up)
Bobby Paris | Night Owl | Night Owl/Tears On My Pillow 7" | Cameo- Parkway | 1966 | Blue-eyed soul singer Bobby Paris was born and raised in New York City -- the product of a Puerto Rican family, he began singing with a neighborhood doo wop group called the Golden Keys in 1956. His first and biggest hit was 1966's "Night Owl" -- based on a melody Paris composed on piano at the age of five, the single was a huge hit and kept its struggling label Cameo/Parkway financially solvent. In the years to follow, "Night Owl," "I Walked Away," and "Per-So-Nal-Ly" all emerged as enduring anthems of Britain's Northern Soul club culture, a fact lost on Paris himself until he was contacted in 1999 to appear in the documentary film The Strange World of Northern Soul. And it's true, "Night Owl" is THE sound of Northern Soul! | 0:36:07 (Pop-up)

The Clash ft. Ranking Roger | Rock the Casbah | Rock The Casbah feat. Ranking Roger Single | Sony | 2022 | As part of the Combat Rock 40th anniversary release, this song will be released as a special 7". Ranking Roger was of course the vocalist for English Beat...his high energy toasting on this version brings it to a whole other level. The B-side of the single features a similar treatment of the (also awesome) Clash tune Red Angel Dragnet. Out May 20th on Rough Trade Records! | * | 0:52:00 (Pop-up) |
The Clash | Straight To Hell (Full Unedited Version) | Clash On Broadway | Epic/Legacy | 1991 | With the expanded 2022 issue of The Clash's "Combat Rock" looming close at hand, I took the opportunity to investigate my own collection & find a related companion piece. This is the full (6:55) version of Straight To Hell, replete with verses that would later be edited out of the album cut. "Pssst... / Hey Chico we got a message for ya... / Vamos vamos muchaho / From Alphabet City all the way A to Z, Dead, Head" | * | 0:56:07 (Pop-up) |
M.I.A., DFA | Paper Planes (DFA Remix) | Paper Planes Homeland Security Remixes | XL Recordings Ltd. | 2008 | I wanted very much to play M.I.A.'s Paper Planes after the Full Unedited "Straight To Hell", since The Clash sample is used so effectively and perfectly. We weren't sure if that would serve our purposes best, though. Then the "Homeland Security Remixes" EP was discovered. Now there are surprises for all of us today!!! | 1:03:02 (Pop-up)

B-Side to Rock The Casbah, an instrumental version. -- "The version of the song on Combat Rock, as well as many other Clash compilations, features an electronic sound effect beginning at the 1:52-minute point of the song. This noise is a monophonic version of the song "Dixie". The sound effect source was generated by the alarm from a digital wristwatch that Mick Jones owned, and was intentionally added to the recording by Jones. The single version has more pronounced bass. Also when Joe Strummer screams "The crowd caught a whiff / Of that crazy casbah jive" at the end of the third verse the word "jive" is sustained for several seconds with digital delay.[citation needed] Additionally, the sound effects of the jet fighters in the last verse are lower in the mix, particularly just after "drop your bombs between the minarets." The single version of the song is what is played in the music video. "Mustapha Dance", which features in many releases of the single, is an instrumental remix of the song." |

Pecola | Worker And Parasite | The Mexican | Kosher Rock Records | 1998 | Pecola was a band from Toronto, Ontario. KosherRockRecords was a label that used to be active in Toronto at the end of the 90's and early 00's... It can be found on the internet using the Wayback Machine, but not using regular searches. So I guess that's history, then? Shout-out to all the members of Pecola. Miss seeing you around these parts. | 1:16:09 (Pop-up)
USA Nails | I Don't Own Anything | Character Shop | Hex Records | 2020 | USA Nails is a punk band from London. This is from their fifth album. They have toured with Metz. They have also opened for Mission Of Burma and shared bills with Idles. They also love Crack Cloud, and rightly so, because Crack Cloud are great. | 1:19:47 (Pop-up)
Psychic Graveyard | Is There A Hotline? | A Bluebird Vacation | Deathbomb Arc | 2020 | Psychic Graveyard is Eric Paul, Paul Vieira, Charles Ovett, and Nathan Joyner. The sound of fireworks used as a musical instrument on ‘A Bluebird Vacation’ perfectly symbolizes the range of powers Psychic Graveyard wields. Pretty and enthusiastic if they want, but if they choose to get in your face, the sound of celebration becomes one of pain. Interweaving field recordings like, and other non-traditional instruments into their distinctive style of rhythmic meanness, Psychic Graveyard find themselves in new territory. Very few tracks include guitars at all. The results work hand in hand with the lyrics addressing very personal experiences with mental illness, antidepressants and benzodiazepines, and the difficulty of helping families going through their own challenges. These sounds don’t blindly spin into despair nor foolishly claim that overcoming just requires finding the right vocal melody. These songs are as messy as life itself, in all its stupid beauty. | 1:20:59 (Pop-up)
Thank | Dread | Thoughtless Cruelty | Box Records | 2022 | This is a record that is meant to be played as loud as possible, an album that is filled with clever lyrics, a clear nihilistic view of the world, and pounding instrumentals. Thoughtless Cruelty is described as “a stark observation of human cruelty filtered through the band’s grim fascinations including long term nuclear warnings” something that becomes obvious when listening to vocalist Freddy Vinehill-Cliffe. It’s 32 minutes of an interesting take on noise rock with a sense of humor. | * | 1:24:02 (Pop-up) |
Stuck | Labour Leisure | Labour Leisure Single | Exploding In Sound | 2021 | Fun is work. Work is "fun". No it's not. This one goes out to all the workers out there for a belated May Day. “Labor Leisure” is about the dissolving boundaries between work life and home life. As we are constantly reminded about how we can optimize our productivity, our diet, our free time etc, we internalize that “hustle mindset” and it negatively reflects in our personal lives. Often it can make what we do for fun feel like a task. Just remember kids, your worth is not measured by your productivity.... | 1:27:42 (Pop-up)
Sports Team | Here's The Thing | Deep Down Happy | Bright Antenna Records | 2020 | London-based rock band Sports Team are best known for their unwavering assessment of British society, but their lyrical insights apply far and wide. “Here’s the Thing” is a cathartic explosion of disillusionment, complete with wailing horns and guitars. It tackles the competitive mindset of capitalism (“If you’re in bed then someone else is catching worms”) and unrealistic fad dieting (“If you just change the way you eat you’ll never die.”) Listening to it briefly punctures the low hum of existential stress that has settled in my brain. These are, as I hate to remind you, unprecedented times, and the dissonance between the more mundane aspects of life and the overarching issues we are facing can be dramatic. | 1:30:15 (Pop-up)
The Clockworks | Enough Is Never Enough | Enough Is Never Enough | Creation 23 | 2020 | With a penchant for matching snarling kitchen-sink commentary with insuppressible sonic tenacity, the time is surely now for The Clockworks. Formed in Galway and drawn together by a mutual appreciation of post-punk’s darkest corners, The Clockworks are a four-piece comprising James McGregor on Vocals/Guitar, Sean Connelly on Guitar, Damian Greaney on Drums and Tom Freeman on bass. The song follows the lives of separate but interconnected individuals in society: from a bigoted Café owner to beleagured kitchen porters, dreaming buskers to down-and-out beggars. Pulling together the fragments of our fractured society, “Enough Is Never Enough” creates a vivid collage that depicts its failings in one painstaking picture. | 1:33:08 (Pop-up)

Babysitter is a French Canadian film. The movie is based on the 2017 play by Catherine Léger and follows a man who loses his job after a sexist joke he makes goes viral on social media and – together with his girfriend – hires a mysterious and liberated babysitter to help shake things up. Forever Pavot make amazingly dreamy, wonderful, music that are perfectly suited to soundtracks, and seem to have picked up where AIR left off... |

Dirty Beaches | True Blue | Badlands | ZOO Music | 2010 | Alex Zhang Hungtai (born September 4, 1980 in Taipei) is a Taiwanese-born Canadian musician and actor. In addition to his given name, he makes music under the names Last Lizard and Dirty Beaches. Zhang released several EPs and three albums as Dirty Beaches on cassette-only labels before releasing his fourth full-length, Badlands, in March 2011.Badlands, unlike Zhang's earlier work, included his vocals on most songs. The album was long listed as a nominee for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize. | 1:55:23 (Pop-up)
Fontaines D.C. | Roman Holiday | Skinty Fia | Partisan Records | 2022 | Hailed as the "BEST BAND IN THE WORLD" by the UK press is a heavy burden to carry. But they are up to the challenge. They have transcended the post punk ghetto to reinvent themselves, which is a welcome thing to witness. On the band’s third album in four years, Skinty Fia, Fontaines D.C. detail what it’s like to be the boys in a not-so-better land, as Irish expats who may share the same skin tone and speak the same language as England’s dominant culture, but who are instantly singled out the moment their accents are revealed in mixed company. Named for an arcane Irish slur that translates to “damnation of the deer”—which, for Fontaines’ purposes, functions as a vivid metaphor of cultural mutation and degradation—Skinty Fia is a record about living in a place that looks like home but doesn’t feel like it. | * | 1:58:13 (Pop-up) |
