The Zodiac | Taurus - The Voluptuary | Cosmic Sounds | Elektra | 1967 | The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds is a 1967 collaborative concept album on the theme of the signs of the Zodiac. It was issued by Elektra Records in and featured early use of the Moog synthesizer by Paul Beaver, with music written by Mort Garson, words by Jacques Wilson, and narration by Cyrus Faryar. Garson brought together a mixture of musicians, most of whom were not credited on the album sleeve. Musician and electronic instrument collector Paul Beaver, who had done music effects for films, was chosen to perform on the Moog synthesizer on the album since he was one of the few people on the West Coast who knew how to set up and use the synthesizer at the time. Beaver and Moog went to the California Audio Engineering Society convention in 1967 to showcase the Moog Synthesizer for the first time on the West Coast.Emil Richards, who had worked with such musicians as Frank Zappa, Marvin Gaye and Henry Mancini, was chosen to provide an assortment of percussive instrumental surprises throughout the album. Bassist Carol Kaye and drummer Hal Blaine, both top on-demand session musicians, were The Zodiac's rhythm section. Bud Shank, a top flute performer, and keyboardist Mike Melvoin were also used. Jacques Wilson wrote the album's narration, and folk singer Cyrus Faryar was chosen (suggested by Hassilev) to narrate over the album's exotic instrumentation. | 0:11:54 (Pop-up)

Project Gemini | The Children Of Scorpio | The Children Of Scorpio | Mr. Bongo | 2022 | Project Gemini is the alias of musician, producer and writer Paul Osborne. Drawing on a wealth of influences, Project Gemini is soon to release his debut album The Children Of Scorpio on Mr Bongo, with heavy splashes of vintage soundtracks, library music, acid-folk, psych funk and a large dash of giallo-style spookiness. A cinematic musical journey that plays out like a long-lost soundtrack (think cult B-movies of the 60s and 70s); 'The Children of Scorpio’ was formed from Paul's love of a myriad of genres; from European library music, acid folk, psych-funk, vintage soundtracks and the contemporary breaks scene. The album draws on iconic classics such as the masterful cinematic funk of Lalo Schifrin's 'Dirty Harry', Ennio Morricone's 'Vergogna Schifosi’ and Luis Bacalov’s 'The Summertime Killer’, to name but a few. | 0:19:12 (Pop-up)

Dog | Beep! Beep! Honk! Honk! | Beep! Beep! Honk! Honk! | Dog | 2022 | Quibbles about congestion fees, rear-views of Cyclists’ bums; Toyota Yaris engine rumbles; sampled evil cackles resounding to fade… These may seem like the madcap plans sniggered-up by schoolboys during lunch breaks. But in the hands of London newcomers Dog, they form the essential mechanisms of the meticulously crafted debut single: ‘Beep! Beep! Honk! Honk!’. | * | 0:36:31 (Pop-up) |
Alex Cameron & Jason Williamson | Oxy Music | Oxy Music | Secretly Canadian | 2022 | Australia’s Alex Cameron revels in singing about different characters, the sort of oddballs who tend to be overlooked by society. The indie pop-rocker started out with the electronic music group Seekae before splitting off to go solo; he released his debut album, Jumping the Shark, in 2016, playing the part of an aging lounge singer with lots of stories to tell. His work is deliberately provocative, deliberately transgressive, and rarely serious. | * | 0:41:27 (Pop-up) |
CHEWY SHE | Je suis nue il est habillé | Chewy She | 2022 | CHEWY SHE is an ethereal electro-disco-punk band based in London fronted by Garance Louis (from Garance and the Mitochondries). Musically, CHEWY SHE mix the spontaneity of punk with fat electro bass, delivered with the groove and glamour of disco. It’s a sound which could only be dreamed up in the eccentric mind of bandleader Garance Louis, who has collaborated in studios with Andy Ramsay (Stereolab), Eddie Stevens (Roisin Murphy) ,The Comet is Coming’s synth wizard, Danalogue and Capitol K. CHEWY speaks out loud for all the women and men of today who follow their own desires, disregard the patriarchy and find their own ecstasy. | * | 0:47:30 (Pop-up)

"Popular WRA" NATIVE PEOPLES is how this very overdue (currently considered "lost") library CD is labelled. (I have now found the item & will be returning it after this show...) "Building on the distorted electric guitar sound of early records, Wray's first hit was the 1958 instrumental "Rumble". It popularized "the power chord, the major modus operandi of modern rock guitarists, facilitating the emergence of punk and heavy rock. The record was first released on Cadence Records (catalog number 1347) as by Link Wray & His Ray Men. "Rumble" was banned in New York and Boston for fear that it would incite teenage gang violence, "rumble" being slang for a gang fight. Before, during, and after his stints with major labels Epic and Swan, Wray released 45s under many names. Tiring of the corporate music machine, he began recording albums using a three-track studio he converted from an outbuilding on his brother's property that his father used to raise chickens, in Accokeek, Maryland. He wrote and recorded the eponymously-titled LP "Link Wray" (1971), on which he wrote about his frustrations... Wray's first three marriages, to Elizabeth Canady Wray, Ethel Tidwell Wray, and Sharon Cole Wray, produced eight children. Wray relocated to Denmark in the early 1980s. Wray died of heart failure at his home in Copenhagen, on November 5, 2005, at the age of 76." |

George Westerholm and The Wild Wildcats (Feat. Babs Vermeulen) | Planet Crouton | Hot & Ready | Test Pressing | 2018 | A perfect, pristine test pressing, with the "INSPECTION/NOTES" section filled carefully by the words "With love to Derek" -- I love you, too, brother. -- Babs sings on this. Love you too, Babs. Our mom brought us into this world & has come to as many gigs as she reasonably could (she's almost 90). Love you Mom! Don't get too personal too often here on the beach. This is the title song from their second full-length release "This Ain't Hollywood." There is also a nightclub in Hamilton, Ontario, named after the album/song. This was released May 14, 1982. At that time: "Vocals and Guitar: Mickey DeSadist / Guitar: Mike Mirabella / Bass: John Welton / Drums: Robert Allan / Produced By: Bob Bryden // Notes - "November 1981: recording at Sound Kitchen in Toronto, ON. // January to March 1982 - Mixdown // May 14, 1982 - Forgotten Rebels 2nd LP, 'This Ain't Hollywood is released on Star Records." (Source: Bob Bryden's website) - There appears to have been a limited (25 ONLY) CD pressing by Mike Shulga from Star Records. There was an attempt to get distribution for them but the $25 wholesale price was too cost prohibitive to resell them at retail." Forgotten Rebels | 1:13:21 (Pop-up)
Chandra | Explosions | Explosions 7" | Third Man Records (via We Are Time records) | 2019 | This was kindly sent to us in a package from the We Are Time record label (to whom we are deeply grateful.) This particular 7" was released on the Third Man Records label. Their site tells the following story of the 7" from which this b-side song was chosen: "Chandra Oppenheim was a child star like no other. As the daughter of famed conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim, by age nine, Chandra was staying up late at her parents’ art-world parties, collaborating in her father’s projects, and performing her own plays at downtown hotspots such as The Kitchen and Franklin Furnace. This set the stage for Chandra’s course-altering collaboration with members of New York no- wave outfit, The Dance, who were looking to form yet another project and found their muse/fuse in 10-year-old Chandra. Their Transportation EP, originally released in 1980 by The Dance’s own label, ON/GoGo, balanced razor- wire guitars, liquid bass lines, and dub-style melodica. The Chandra band unveiled their first four songs: “Opposite”, “Concentration”, “Subways”, and “Kate.” At age 12, the post-punk pre-teen took the stage with her band for the first time at New York’s legendary Mudd Club. A whirlwind of press coverage ensued from glossy magazines like Vogue and Paris Match to the influential underground zine Non LP B Side and a Soho News cover story. A second EP was recorded and later shelved as Chandra walked away from the band at age 14 to focus on her education. The EP would not see the light of day for decades. Chandra’s Transportation EP saw a deluxe reissue that included the unreleased 2nd EP, as well as 2 demos from the same era, on Telephone Explosion Records out of Toronto in 2018. Chandra, now based in Maine, has also reactivated the Chandra Band with the help of a who’s who line-up of Toronto’s independent music scene. Third Man Records invited Chandra and her band to its Cass Corridor stage last winter. On February 1, 2019, magic was made and luckily for you it was captured. The songs presented to you on this Blue Stage Sessions 7”, Day Without Success b/w Explosions, are based on the demos and rehearsal tapes of Chandra Oppenheim, Eugenie Diserio and Steven Alexander recorded from 1981-1983. They have never been performed live until their new arrangements by the re-formed Chandra Band." | 1:16:10 (Pop-up)

Rubber Oh | Nothing | Nothing | Rocket Recordings | 2022 | After originally cementing himself as the guitarist and producer of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Sam Grant has now begun to pursue his own solo venture Rubber Oh, announcing the details of their debut album 'Strange Craft'. Speaking about the new offering, Grant said, "Ultimately, ’Nothing’ is a song about the weight of thought, and the freedom in letting go. But the lyrics are meant to sit in a space that’s both optimistic and hopeful, and equally readable as pessimistic and futile - playing with the ideas of dualism and Nihilism. There’s an alluring sense of the Optimistic Nihilist in the track - that prospect of knowing your own inconsequence could be liberating. But it’s always tethered to the paradoxes that creates." Rubber Oh's debut album 'Strange Craft' will be released on the 3rd June | * | 1:33:36 (Pop-up) |
Folly Group | I Raise You (The Price Of Your Head) | I Raise You (The Price Of Your Head) | Technicolour | 2022 | Speaking about ‘I Raise You (The Price Of Your Head)’ and the forthcoming EP, Folly Group reveal: “Where ‘Awake and Hungry’ doubled as a diary of the band’s formative months and encapsulation of our live show, ‘Human and Kind’ is a projection of our ambition, and our desire to push ourselves through what we might previously have perceived as the ceiling of possibility for four players. The release is at once introspective and extroverted: it attempts to be a dynamic interrogation of grief and growth.” They add: “I Raise You (The Price of Your Head)’ is a pandemic-era role-reversal between politician and young person that poses the question: you were happy to gamble with my life, what if I were to gamble with yours?” | * | 1:37:46 (Pop-up) |
Crows | Slowly Separate | Beware Believers | Bad Vibrations Records | 2022 | Crows exist in the shadows. With their brooding riffs and goth-rock soundscapes, the London four-piece are delivering a classic post-punk sound with a fresh coat of thick, black paint. Much like debut album ‘Silver Tongues’, ‘Beware Believers’ is richly atmospheric yet deeply intimate. Delving into themes of governmental decline, social division and self-reflection, a sinister vein of fury runs just beneath the surface - ‘Beware Believers’ is always a second away from snapping, every track sharp and pained. | * | 1:41:39 (Pop-up) |
Kevin Morby | Rock Bottom | Rock Bottom (Single) | Dead Oceans | 2022 | The song, driven by a fuzz-laden guitar riff and endearingly scrappy sing-song vocals reminiscent of Morby’s lo-fi punk outfit the Babies, is a subtle ode to the late James Lee Lindsey Jr., better known as Jay Reatard — the prolific Memphis-based garage rock trailblazer who died from an overdose at the age of 29 in 2010. | * | 1:45:21 (Pop-up) |
Kikagu Moyo | Cardboard Pile | Cardboard Pile | Guruguru Brain | 2022 | The Japanese psych rockers’ fifth studio album will be released on May 6 via the band’s own Guruguru Brain label. They released follow up ‘Forest Of Lost Children’ in 2014, ‘House In The Tall Grass’ in 2016 and ‘Masana Temples’ in 2018. They also released live album ‘Deep Fried Grandeur’ last year. | * | 1:48:06 (Pop-up) |
