A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Wonderful enveloping fog over the unusually calm HellGate strait, on out into the East River; it’s also obscuring Manhattan and the tip of Roosevelt Island. Couple of pairs of ducks frolicking near the shore. Lovely.

It’s a real strain on the imagination in 2022 to conjure up the bucolic nature of these islands we live on, which have been incorporated into this high-rise megalopolis, as they were only a couple of centuries ago.
Was at the local library yesterday and among the meager pickings was a book Pete Hamill happened to put together (upon the research of one published in the mid 1800’s) about the “great” riots of NYC. And one passage jumped out so much I had to re- read it. Told of a mile-wide lake where the Tombs are now! Made me wonder how many of the original creeks , rivers, ponds and such have been converted up in the push to develop the city for more housing.

Yep:
Washington Square was a paupers grave from the yellow fever epidemics. And a place to hang criminals.
Canal street was a canal same as Wall Street was a wall.
Terrain marches on.

Basically, the NCAA is as corrupt a governing body as you're likely to find this side of FIFA (or, you know, the government), and it is designed to elevate the wealthy and keep the poor in their place. Remind anyone of anything?

Was just on long walk and ran into another dad, who’s a local DSA member (and big FMU fan). Did another lap with him as he slow jogged to keep pace with my fast walk.
Yesterday, ran into a local Occupy comrade. We commiserated on how pathetic the MSM is; tried to keep from becoming hopeless about the seemingly diminishing prospects of any kind of awakening because of the relentless propaganda barraging us 24/7. It’s frustrating trying to get people to stayed focused on this shit corporate, crony capitalist system and a bribed government being the *real* problems from which all else stems.
Anyway, made me think that these kinds of spontaneous interactions are what makes city life feel like a real community. Because like many especially now the thought of a rural or rustic life seems more and more appealing (instead of this www.vox.com...). At least here I know there are a good handful or more of activist comrades who I know for mutual aid I could rely on if the shit really hits the fan.

Meadowlands as a salt marsh definitely makes sense. I know there have been plans to slowly convert the Meadowlands into a big nature park so water has some place to go as climate-related issues worsen.
In the mean time, we surrounded an expensive sports, shopping, and entertainment complex with a ton of asphalt...

And that gets to the point about how lousy a lot of mainstream reporting has been. Instead of the superficial horserace, both sides are the same, and gossip-type political reporting, and instead of the local network news spending the first 10+ minutes of every single broadcast talking about a single violent crime or single fire happening in a metro area with millions of people, they'd focus on something like all the ways climate change will and already is affecting people and businesses.
There's a lot of great reporting out there that just doesn't get nearly as much attention as the crap that most people see.
