	12:37pm ChukAmok: I used to tar foundations during my spring breaks in high school. Had to cut out chunks of hair and rinse with strong solvent (think kerosene) every day. Also spent years in the darkroom of some important artists sulfur toning hundreds of prints a day. The way you knew the toner had gone bad was when the rotten egg smell became too much to bear.

	12:43pm egould310: I worked a summer in a dusty, hot warehouse deep cleaning all the appliances from a closed down fried chicken chain. Deep fryers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, prep tables, coolers, warmers, ventilation systems, utensils, etc. I was the first person to have cleaned any of the stuff in 10 years. Laminated chicken fat is tough to clean. Saved my money and bought my first car. A VW Rabbit. The engine blew up about two months after purchase.

	12:48pm YETI BOB: I just remembered my real worst job. Working in a carwash, and having to shovel out the "pit" where all the grime accumulated. That feels a lifetime ago.
	12:49pm Krys O.: Ooh, I had a toxic after school job working at a commercial laundry/dry cleaners. Will always remember the one time that the ventilation system began to fail and we all felt giddy. It turns out we were minutes from dying from the toxic fumes from the solvents. We had to rush out into the winter snow to breathe.

	12:53pm Carmichael: Heya EFD and Duane. I worked at a state fair food concession for about 20 minutes. Fry cook in a trailer in August in California, with a German woman SCREAMING at us to hurry up. It felt good to throw the apron at her and walk off to the midway.
	12:53pm ChukAmok: I used to work at the Paul Smith on 5th Ave for about three months. The management were total assholes and accused me of stealing (I wasn't, nor would I), so I quit and went on tour with my band. Got to meet Ric Ocasek though.

	12:54pm Handy Haversack: My dad had scars from when he worked at a chemical company in the thirties and had to carry open buckets of caustics up ladders! Puts in perspective the occasional clam fork in the hand while working as a dishwasher.
	12:54pm Krys O.: I also got a 2nd degree burn on my leg from one of the exposed steam pipes by the pressing machines when I went to retrieve a customer's order. The owners were afraid that I would sue them. I was also held up in a late night robbery at the dry cleaners. Funny thing is I recognized the guy as a friend of one of the other employers. Someone who came in to chat on a regular basis.

	12:57pm tim from washington: The most dangerous experience I had on the job was when I worked in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. One time a group home resident jumped out of the van while were at a red light on a busy road and bolted into traffic. He was booking down a traffic lane. It took me a block to catch up to him and get him out of the road.

I hadn't and there weren't any more customers. I told him to F off, close it himself and threw my apron and keys across the store and went to leave. He followed me to my car, apologizing to a middle finger.

Also, I am rarity in today's world--I have been at my current gig for 27 years. (Even though it's been four different parent companies because of sales and mergers.)

There was one guy in a different group home where I worked who we needed to call in the psych nurse emergency team if he went off. Fortunately, I never had to experience that.

	1:17pm John L: The only time I ever had a "I'm ouuta here" moment was when I was working at a rubber factory. We made anything made of rubber, car bumpers, anything to keep household items in place, etc. The factory had no ventilation, the gloves barely prevented burns and we had no masks to protect us from the stream when we opened up the molds. I was never thinner, due loss of appetite. I was only out of high school for a couple of years, had dropped out of community college and was determined not to quit. After more than a year I finally decided to quit, but only if the Bob Seger song "Against The Wind" came on the radio next. I gave notice and decided to fly to California and hitch back to Long Island.

	1:44pm Krys O.: I've been at my job for 24 years. Based on size of my retirement savings, I need to keep working into my 70s which is not surprising. My mom still worked as a housekeeper in her 70s. I'll be 59 later this year.

	1:46pm Dano59: oh, I was financially irresponsible my whole life ... started working bad jobs at 14, found a career as a writer at 27; worked 15 years each for a daily newspaper and in academia. I figured enough was enough and I could get by.

	1:51pm morphe': Retirement differences are really unjust: I was able to retire at the age of 55 after 27 years teachingNYC DOE = 1/2 my salary and all health and dental .. NYPD/FDNY can go out at any age after 20 years .. and they up the retirement by doing a lot of OT in the last 3 years All of that is great for those that get it but why not bus/train workers, nurses, home care attendents, everyone !!! Also, IRA and other private pension accounts are vulnerable to "market" fluctuations. My older son's mother had to retire just as the last big depression hit and her IRA plummeted..
	1:51pm Dano59: Worst job ever: Carny. I got picked up hitchhiking in the Texas panhandle and worked two long grueling days assembling rides for a county fair in SE Colorado for the grand sum of $14.
	1:52pm Handy Haversack: Well, may as well think of those fourteen dollars converting directly into a Nancy Sinatra CD and support for WFMU, Dano59!
	1:53pm Dano59: in 1979 dollars I think it more than covers the retail price ... disposable income for radio support and records is a luxury but also the stuff of life.
	1:54pm Figgsrock: This break about jobs had me doubled over laughing.
	1:54pm mrdonutsu: I had a very similar cold calling telemarketer job when I was starving in LA in '85. Calling small businesses in rural California trying to get them to advertise on the "55 And Over Club" — some syndicated radio program targeted at seniors (that I don't know if it ever actually existed). It was equal parts wacky 80s sitcom and Glengarry Glen Ross. 100% commission. I lasted a week. Didn't make a dime.
	1:54pm Rick in Madison: NE is full of those type of gigs. I worked at a "corn wet-milling" factory the summer before I met Duane and the summer after. Some nasty stuff.

I got used to the smell, and had to handle the occasional dead chicken, but it wasn't bad. It was in Israel, so the heat could be hellish, but it was heaven compared to the other two jobs I mentioned.

Some of the people, especially the drunk or stoned ones would be a little freaked out by the music. One slow night I was blasting Ornette Coleman and Eugene Chadbourne walked in. He stopped in his tracks and said "This is the last thing I expected to hear." He was even more shocked that I recognized him.

On my fifth day of work at a warehouse, I was busy opening sealed boxes of stock with a box cutter and, after turning away for one blind moment watching out for passing forklifts, I found a gaping cut below the back of my thumb. I was excused for the day and left for the hospital. Needless to say, I was discharged immediately after that. My sister had it worse. She once worked at a restaurant in our neighborhood working food prep. While she was cutting carrots & having a conversation with a fellow worker, she ended up cutting at least three of her fingers to the bone! In her case, she kept working there afterwards for another year before moving on to law school.

Deep fryers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, prep tables, coolers, warmers, ventilation systems, utensils, etc. I was the first person to have cleaned any of the stuff in 10 years. Laminated chicken fat is tough to clean. Saved my money and bought my first car. A VW Rabbit. The engine blew up about two months after purchase.

	12:53pm ChukAmok: I used to work at the Paul Smith on 5th Ave for about three months. The management were total assholes and accused me of stealing (I wasn't, nor would I), so I quit and went on tour with my band. Got to meet Ric Ocasek though.

The owners were afraid that I would sue them. I was also held up in a late night robbery at the dry cleaners. Funny thing is I recognized the guy as a friend of one of the other employers. Someone who came in to chat on a regular basis.

We made anything made of rubber, car bumpers, anything to keep household items in place, etc. The factory had no ventilation, the gloves barely prevented burns and we had no masks to protect us from the stream when we opened up the molds. I was never thinner, due loss of appetite. I was only out of high school for a couple of years, had dropped out of community college and was determined not to quit. After more than a year I finally decided to quit, but only if the Bob Seger song "Against The Wind" came on the radio next. I gave notice and decided to fly to California and hitch back to Long Island.

NYPD/FDNY can go out at any age after 20 years .. and they up the retirement by doing a lot of OT in the last 3 years All of that is great for those that get it but why not bus/train workers, nurses, home care attendents, everyone !!! Also, IRA and other private pension accounts are vulnerable to "market" fluctuations. My older son's mother had to retire just as the last big depression hit and her IRA plummeted..

It was equal parts wacky 80s sitcom and Glengarry Glen Ross. 100% commission. I lasted a week. Didn't make a dime.

I got used to the smell, and had to handle the occasional dead chicken, but it wasn't bad. It was in Israel, so the heat could be hellish, but it was heaven compared to the other two jobs I mentioned.

Some of the people, especially the drunk or stoned ones would be a little freaked out by the music. One slow night I was blasting Ornette Coleman and Eugene Chadbourne walked in. He stopped in his tracks and said "This is the last thing I expected to hear." He was even more shocked that I recognized him.

On my fifth day of work at a warehouse, I was busy opening sealed boxes of stock with a box cutter and, after turning away for one blind moment watching out for passing forklifts, I found a gaping cut below the back of my thumb. I was excused for the day and left for the hospital. Needless to say, I was discharged immediately after that. My sister had it worse. She once worked at a restaurant in our neighborhood working food prep. While she was cutting carrots & having a conversation with a fellow worker, she ended up cutting at least three of her fingers to the bone! In her case, she kept working there afterwards for another year before moving on to law school.
